I came in to Kenny's because I had dyed my naturally dirty blonde hair to a medium brunette and decided that being a brunette wasn't for me about 6 weeks later. Kenny and the staff did an amazing job on my hair. Kenny not only dyed my hair back to a light blonde, but also had to strip the color (that I had applied myself) because it was uneven. Yes, I was in the salon for more than 2 hours, but the staff made sure I was comfortable (water, soda, etc.). Kenny even offered to have me come in a few days later if I wanted any highlights added or to get a blowout (since I was going to a bridal shower/bachelorette party) that weekend. Yes, the salon is a bit expensive but still about on par for the area. I would definitely recommend Kenny's. read more

I got the best Brazilian blowout here a couple of weeks ago. I have had plenty and this was by far the best one I've ever had.

I've had nothing but good results just walking in and getting haircuts and waxing here, which I've done about five times. Most of the stylists are men who are probably eastern European. I'm into a little small talk when I get my haircut, but prefer to relax rather than chat the whole time, and that seems to have gone over well here. I'm not one to ask for a specific cut, and am more likely to just say "about this long, with some layers, something fun", and I have gotten nice haircuts that way. I think I'm a kind of easy customer, but I recommend being an easy customer when it comes to hair: Get a decent stylist and let them do their job -- they usually come up with something better than my crappy hair ideas anyway. That's my soapbox :-) The prices are moderate here (I'm a woman and pay around $50 maybe for a cut), and you can usually save money by insisting you don't want your hair styled after it's cut. Basically, this is a no-gimmick salon that's made me look good every time I've been there -- so I'm happy! read more

Was tired of driving to Rockville to get my brows tinted and waxed (thought I still do for my hair cut) and had heard good things about Kenny's in general. I won't be going back. I made an appointment with Monica for Saturday at 3. I arrive on time and they tell me that she's not there. They bring me to the back to be taken care of by someone else. I wait 15 minutes for her to be done with a customer, and when she comes out I find out she does not, in fact, tint eyebrows. I go back up front to let the receptionist know the situation and I will not be back because this is not how to run a business. She is personally apologetic but doesn't seem concerned when I say I won't be back. Their website says "24 hour cancellation notice is appreciated" - apparently that only works one way, since they didn't give me a call. I'm out my time, $1.25 for the meter, and my brows are still not done. Stay away from Kenny's. read more

I've been going to Kenny's for ages - this is the new location(the other one was in Ballston). Nothing but great haircuts from the man himself. I've always been happy with my haircuts here. This is a completely different salon experience from Ballston, and I actually really prefer the space now. I purchased a bloomspot coupon here for a keratin treatment because the reviews seemed good and the location is fairly close to where I live. I was really excited about it, and although getting an appointment was a bit of a hassle (they apparently don't do them on Sundays, and most of the other times I suggested were already booked), when I finally got my appointment booked I couldn't wait to go. When I arrived (Thursday around 4) the place was empty and Kenny greeted me along with the stylist who was going to do my hair (I believe his name was Ramy). Kenny suggested that due to the length of my hair (very long) and the fact that it was "virgin" hair (no color, treatments, etc.) that I try the thermafuse treatment, which was an organic version of the keratin treatment but would produce similar results - he said it wouldn't be pin straight, and it would be more of a natural-looking straight, but it would still last about 3 months. I was hesitant, because I had heavily researched keratin treatments and not this organic version, but Kenny assured me that my hair would come out straight and the results would last, but it would be a better option for my hair. The stylist who did my hair was nice and explained the process as it happened. They made sure I had magazines and water, and overall the experience was pleasant. He told me at the end that he would need to wash my hair and dry it once more (different from the keratin treatment). I told him that since he was going to do that, that I would like a trim as well. After he finished, I LOVED the way it looked - it was straight, sleek and chic! When he completed my hair, I went up to pay and I was charged for the trim (which I expected) AND a shampoo/blowout (which I did not expect, as he had told me that he had to wash and dry it one more time as part of the process, but it happened so fast I didn't realize this at time otherwise I would have pointed it out). I also paid for a bottle of conditioner (they were out of the shampoos for the treatment, but they gave me a sample one for free). Overall, I paid $85 (not including tip) on top of the coupon I had already paid, the bulk of that being for the blowdry, which again, I don't believe I should have been charged for. So overall a good visit. But here's the clincher: the thermafuse treatment went away after ONE wash. ONE! I used the shampoo and conditioner provided but I came out of the shower and my hair was CURLY again. It literally looked like I had done nothing to it. I was obviously upset, because even with the coupon I paid an amount that was out of my price range, and Kenny had told me it would last for three months. Even two would have been fine, as he had told me it was a more natural look. But ONE wash?! I immediately called the salon and explained what happened, and asked if I could come in and get the keratin treatment I had paid for since my treatment did not work. The receptionist promised that Kenny was going to call me back personally the next day. That call never came. Neither did the four other calls I was told I would be receiving from the four other times I called and spoke with a receptionist. I wanted to give more stars, because I really believe the stylist did a good job and it's not his fault if the treatment didn't work. However, I do believe that once it didn't work, they should have tried to rectify the situation or AT LEAST returned my calls and tell me why they couldn't do the process again. On top of that, and being charged for the blowout which I was told was part of the process makes it so that I don't feel I could give more stars. I also can't help but think that maybe the thermafuse treatment was pushed on me because my hair is so long and the keratin treatment is so time consuming that they just simply didn't want to do it. read more

I recently did Keratin with Faiza and was assured that the result would turn out beautifully. I was concerned because it looked like she BARELY put any product on my hair. The result was that my hair looks very frizzy, dry, and dull now after the very first wash. It looks like a keratin that had been faded after 3 months of its application, and that's not how keratin should look like after the first wash. Terrible job, unfortunately. Kenny is very honest & if he thinks he can do a better color/cut than what you come in with he will tell you & he will do better. I have short, difficult, thick, curly hair. I went in to get it cut before a last-minute job interview and needed something convenient, and Kenny's was around the corner from me. My appointment was with Richie, who was very sweet and attentive. I told him I have thick, curly hair (as he could see), and told him I wanted it shorter, but that he could do what he wanted with it as long as it was shorter and it worked with the curl. Whoo boy, did it get shorter. I got a super-short, rounded blunt cut in the front with longer hair in the back that he fluffed up so it looked like I was constantly running. Every time I started to say something about it during the cutting process, he goes, "Don't worry darling, it's Italian." I take some responsibility for this as I could have been clearer with the cut instructions, but the cut clearly did not work with my curly hair, which I explicitly asked for. After he was done, he suggested I might want to dye it a fun color. You'd think I would've said no after how much I hated the haircut, but I was in denial, and I thought dying it would make me feel better, especially because the color he suggested is my favorite color, a bright, almost-Crayola red, but with enough dark/natural tones in it that I won't get crap for it at work. It turned out a horrible coppery pinkish-red. He clearly messed up, and I knew it, but I'm too polite to say anything, and I thought it would grow on me. Overall experience of day 1: 1.5 stars - stars only given because Richie was a nice guy who clearly had a vision - it just happened to be a bad one. Also, stars given because he knocked the price down for me because my hair is short enough to basically be a men's cut. Stars lost because the haircut looked terrible, looked even worse when it grew out (hello, mullet), and the dye job had clearly gone wrong. I went back the next week when I realized the color was not, in fact, growing on me, and that I absolutely hated it and would feel very uncomfortable going to my job interview with that hair. Richie fit me in the day I asked him to, and promised to try to change it. Given the nature of red dyes, the only thing he could really try to do was make it darker and hopefully get it to an auburn brown, which he was able to do. He very kindly stayed late in order to work with me. However, he charged me to fix a dye job that had clearly gone wrong, as it turned out many, many shades away from what it was supposed to look like. I realize that reds are risky, but don't charge me when you make me look like a demented penny. Eventually, we agreed that he would charge me to style it at the end ($40) and not charge me for the dye. 3 stars for day two, because, again, Richie was really nice, stayed late when he didn't have to in order to try to make me happy, and I was ultimately satisfied with the end color. Stars lost because the cut still sucked (not much to be done about that since it was already so short in the front), he charged me for something he messed up, and, well, when I pay that much money to go to a salon, I shouldn't have to go back for a correction. Bottom line: Richie is definitely a hair artist. I don't fault him for that - I think it's a good thing, and if you're looking for a really edgy cut, he's the guy to go to. And niceness goes a really long way in my book. But he didn't listen to the open-ended instructions I gave, and the dye job went horribly wrong. In the end, I wouldn't go back. I have been to Kenny's hair salon three times: 3 cuts and one dye session. I have to say that each time was great! Kenny cut my hair all three times and I loved them! I have thick, wavy, and naturally dry prone hair so everytime he has cut my hair he makes sure that my layers lighten up my hair as well as keeping it easy for me to keep up. The staff is respectful, nice and are always ready with some Turkish tea or even white wine! ;) I am from NYC where if you are not careful the salon staff can and will try to make you buy expensive services you don't need. Very impressive! Mike listened to what i wanted (all-over trim, longer bangs, cut to encourage the natural waves), and he delivered in spades! I made an appointment at the last minute and Mike's schedule was flexible. He took one look at my face and hair, he agreed with my assessment of what would look best on me, and he made it so. In and out in 25 minutes, at a very reasonable price. No lectures on how i should color it, no lectures on how i should spend more time blow-drying it. He gave me easy-care hair to match my busy, fast-paced lifestyle. I'll definitely be back! read more

Ah update. The waxing girl I had raved about in my review is now gone. I know she moved to a salon in the area (because she told me once that she was moving, and I stupidly thought she meant all of Kenny's, not just her), but I can't find her anywhere! I don't even know her name. The new girl is okay, I can't really complain with $15 and a block away from my work, but she doesn't trim my eyebrows with the scissors and she's not as friendly as the other lady. And one time I told her they were uneven and she told me it was the angle I was looking at them. Hm. I originally had a great haircut here from Rami. When I made a new appointment for another haircut 6 weeks later, I called 3 days ahead to make an appointment with Rami after I got off work at 6:45. That day, I rushed back from work on the metro, and when I finally got to the salon they told me Rami had not come into work at all that day and he was sick. When I asked why nobody had called me, they literally had no response. They did not offer another stylist, they did not offer to reschedule for another time, they did not even say they were sorry. I was outraged, and I will never ever go back there and I recommend nobody else does either. Horrible customer service. read more

I went in for a last minute appt for an updo at Kenny's salon before a wedding. I booked the appointment because they were the only salon in the area that could take me with such short notice. I did not have an idea of what I wanted but the hairdresser assured me he would make me look "modern and elegant." He first showed me an example of what he would do and it was absolutely gorgeous! The entire updo only took about 45 minutes for him to complete. It was truly a work of art. While I was paying at the counter Mila offered to do my makeup as well. Since I do not have very good makeup products at home I agreed to get my makeup done. She did such an amazing job. She even put on the eyelash extensions which I always have trouble doing at home. Although it took almost 2 hours I was very happy with the outcome. She is a master of the "smoky eyes". I can't tell you how many compliments I got at the wedding. Everyone wanted to know where I got my hair and makeup done. Thanks to the entire staff at Kenny's. I will return and recommend to my friends as well. read more

I've had my nails done by Monica three times now and she is incredible. Her manicures are the best I've had-ever! Well, actually that's not true, the best manicure I've ever had was in China last year. The manicure process I was given in Beijing took nearly two hours. The treatment included about four different lotions and five different types of arm and hand massages which included a "rubbing" which removed layers of icky dead skin cells from my forearms and hands. My skin never felt softer nor "glowed" as it did after this treatment. Although I rate Monica's service second to my experience in China, I can say her manicures are of the finest I've received in over 20 years of regular manicure and pedicure service. She is highly meticulous about cuticle removal and the shaping of the nail. She also takes her time with the polish application. As a result, my nails remain nice to look at nearly twice as long. But here is the catch; time factor. Monica's manicures take longer than most manicures. So when scheduling an appointment, I have to be sure to allow over an hour for a manicure and more than 2 1/2 hours for both a manicure and pedicure. While I give a glowing review to Monica's service, there are some aspects about Kenny's Hair Salon which aren't exactly flattering. First of all the Feng Shui of the salon's layout is completely off-balance. The check-in and check-out counter is located in an awkward position in the midst of salon chairs where clients getting their hair done watch you checking in and out. Blaring techno music overhead makes communicating at the salon awkward as I found myself and the receptionist yelling at each other in order to be heard. Most of the stylists are meticulously coiffed European men dressed in tight jeans. This is fine by me, except, for me at least, the intensity of testosterone in the atmosphere was overwhelming. I can't remember if there were any strobe lights around, I think I was concentrating on raising my voice and straining my ears to communicate to the receptionist in regards to my appointment or bill. I'm sure there are hoards of young women and men who enjoy this type of invigorating night-club environment while being groomed. As for me, I'll have to find a spa that provides a more zen-like ambiance. read more

A great special touch was serving tea in special Egyptian glasses. They need more prominent signage; we've walked past there many times and didn't realize it was there. I have always had a great haircut, styling and color from Kenny. The staff is courteous and one time accommodated my schedule for a funeral. The hair products used are great and very good for sensitive hair and scalp. I wish the wax was better for sensitive skin. I have had trouble communicating with some of the waxing staff. They are moving to a new location on Washington Blvd. soon. I wish they would let you include the tip in your credit card. read more

Just got a Brazilian blowout and a cut from Kenny's yesterday. Got the deal from Groupon for the Brazilian, and had to pay extra $20 for the cut. Overall, I loved the service! I read the reviews and just needed a little trim so I figured I would test it out. I have..had medium length thick hair that I was growing out. I told Ziya I was growing it out and just needed a trim to make it look nice. He had other plans, "No its too thick, we need layers" I told him I was not opposed to LONG layers but I wanted to keep the length so just trim what is needed. I also told him due to the ammount of hair I need to keep it long and thick or else it will poof out. "On no it wont no it wont" Well lets see I have known my hair for 25 years and Oh yes it will and it is since he got creative and started cutting 2-3 inches off to give me great layers. I told him it was too short his response " no I'm just framing the face he pulls a piece of hair from the back of the head and says see its still long. THEN he brings a razor out... I told him to put it away my hair. I HAVE THICK wavy hair what idiot would use a razor on that?! he put it away and I though he brought out scissors but no it was thinning sheers. Before I knew it my beautiful thick hair was being stripped off my head. Now I am left with 1/2 of the hair I had and with layers that look like crap when they aren't professionally blow dried. It puffs out like I knew it would with out the weight and I hate it. Why is it so hard to listen, I am not asking you to paint me a picture I am asking you to trim my hair, and I am paying you to do what I ask. I wish I could get my money back. read more

Disclaimer: I LOVE my hair. I want to give this place 5, as Kenny is incredible. This is a (very long, sorry) review for the way they handle their Groupon deals. Please read if you plan on buying one. I purchased a groupon deal for highlights, cut and blow dry this morning, and called shortly after asking if they had availability this afternoon. I specifically stated I had purchased a groupon. The man on the phone set up the appointment, like ya do. I get there, apparently I'm set up with the owner of the salon and school, which I'm psyched about. My hair looks awesome. Then I go to pay. The assistant/costylist tells me it's $190. I'm sorry, what? I tell her I bought a groupon, and she tells me Kenny doesn't accept groupons. I'm staring at her in disbelief, and she goes downstairs to talk to Kenny (keep in mind, Kenny never comes upstairs to talk to me in person) comes up and tells me he'll take $30 off. So with the groupon I'm paying $110 extra. I tell her I told the man on the phone it was groupon, and she just looks at me like there's nothing she can do. This goes on for as long as I can take, and I pay it just to get out of there. What really got to me is that the assistant tells me something like "well you got top-notch service, we don't do groupon for that", as if I should have asked for lesser service because I paid less...? Who thinks to do that? Basically, if you choose to go there (I won't be going back) make sure you tell them once you get there that it's groupon. Students do the work and then the instructors come and inspect; so while it may take a little longer than a normal studio, you're getting so much attention and detail. I cant believe Kenny has decent reviews on here. I have fine highlighted blond hair and when I came in for highlights becasuse I had such bad roots and my girl in DC was booked for 2 weeks, Kenny managed to fry my hair and make me a platinum blonde without any warning!!! My hair was so fried that I had a million pieces sticking up like a chicken. I was half in tears and Kenny abruptly said "I thought you liked being blonde!" I was speechless and honestly scared my hair would never be the same. He had to tone it two shades darker and gave me low lights but I was still really unsatisfied as the color was NOT what I wanted at all. Plus the texture is DEAD now. I am used to nice blond highlights where you can see your natural color come through as well. This turned my entire hair one color and it was trash blonde with orange streaks which I think occured from over processing. The only plus was that he did not charge me, but never really admitted to damaging my hair and giving me trashy white blonde hair out of no where. I looked like a chicken or Rod Stewart lol. Dont go!!!! Go to Bang Salon in Verizon Center and see Jenn O and she wont ever ruin you. MY MISTAKE for trying something new. read more

It does take awhile as they are normally busy and he takes his time (which is a good thing) - just make sure to account for the time in your day. I am very particular and went to Kenny on a whim and loved it. He did an amazing job and my I received many compliments afterward. We had the worst experience at Kenny's. My daughter had made an appointment to get her hair cut and styled for her senior prom in high school. When we arrived for our scheduled appointment, the stylist was still working on a wedding party. We waited for more than 40 minutes beyond our scheduled time before the stylist turned to my daughter -- despite repeated pleas to the owner. In order to save time, the stylist put metal rollers in her hair and placed her under the hair dryer. After about 20 minutes, I went back to see how things were proceeding ... only to discover that my daughter had removed the hair dryer because her head felt like it was burning from the metal rollers; tears were streaming down her face. I asked where the stylist was and was informed that he had gone out for lunch. His assistant was supposed to monitor my daughter, but she too was upset because she had told the stylist that the metal rollers would be too hot. Finally, the stylist returned. By this time, we should have been long out of the salon so that she could get dressed. The hair was not done, but we had to leave. As he made a half-attempt to work on her hair, it only got worse. She ended up with something like French country-girl ringlets a la Shirley Temple -- clearly, not the kind of look she wanted for her senior prom much less any other day. Kenny's, I am sorry that we made the appointment at your salon. I regret paying the salon given your negligence. We will never return. read more

I had a bloomspot coupon for Keratin hair treatment for 150, which is amazingly cheap. I went there earlier this weekend and they did an amazing job. The shop is right off the metro and easy to find. I have had keratin before so I knew what to expect, and these guys had it down. The shampoo lady was a sweetheart and massaged my scalp forever, which I loved. When it came time for the Keratin there were two stylists doing it so it took about half the time as it normally would. They were very attentive and continuously offered me water and magazines. I had already paid for the service via bloomspot but when it came time to pay tip and for products I realized I grabbed my metro card and not my credit card. Luckily I had enough cash to cover a small tip but they were still nice about it. I will make sure to leave a large tip next time I come. read more

I went in for a cut and color, and told Mike I was unhappy with the color I had received from another salon--too light, almost a dirty blond--and wanted to go back to my natural (before I was gray) medium dark brown. He seemed to understand and said he had just the thing--but what I got instead was jet black! That real fake black that does not really look natural on anyone. I thought it would look better at home but under natural light just seemed worse. When i called the salon and told them it was not what I wanted and asked if they could do anything to lighten it, Mike said to just give it a few shampoos and it would lighten on its own. 12 shampoos later it is still jet black. The cut he gave me was pretty good and overall I would say if you want a cut, he is fine; if you want a color, learn from my mistake and be proactive and tell him you want to see swatches or samples before he applies the color--or perhaps just go to him for cuts and leave the color to someone else. read more

If you want to get a hair updo and want to look like someone from the 1940s...then this is the place. I asked for an updo that was modern and elegant and even showed Kenny what I wanted. After 45 minutes when he was done, my updo looked like it had a birds nest with 4 birds inside...it looked hideous. I was too embarrassed to even walk in public. And he charged $75 for that rubbish. I went straight to Magic Scissors and Olga saved my life. I ran into her salon with panic and asked her to fix my hideous birds nest. She did exactly what I wanted and I loved it. She is a really sweet lady and she stayed past the closing time to redo my hair and charged m3 $25. DO NOT go to Kenny if you want an updo. read more
