READ THIS BEFORE ENTERING! I had the misfortune of attending this school as an esthetics student. It has taken me many months to work up the courage and strength to write about what unknowingly became the absolute worst experience of my life. When first meeting with an admission rep I was promised I would be in a small intimate class of 9, that was not the case. Instead, they shoved 16 girls ( one of which was homeless and mentally unstable) into a class room that didn't even have enough seats let alone supplies needed to educate a class that large. It took weeks to get lockers, supply kits, I.D cards, books, and even copy's of class work hand outs. I was also racially profiled by the financial aid representative. We were all told that there would be an essay contest and the winner would receive the reimbursement of the supply kit, a 1,600$ value. For some reason she decided to tell me not to write one because "someone else might need it more." Weeks later a situation arose between faculty and students which detonated what can only be described as a race war. For months one party was made to feel uncomfortable and threatened with physical and mental abuse. Countless emails were sent but completely ignored. The board of education was called and investigated accusations of racism. Our teacher was fired in the middle of the day never to be seen or heard from again. After this the Executive Director came down from the hub of Aveda. She offered no solution to the problem except a phone call which came 3 weeks after my graduation date. She told me that four other members of the faculty had also been fired, but since my grades had been so good the only type of compensation she thought I should have would be free advanced classes (500 dollar value) at the institute. Yes thats right she offered me more time in a place that nearly brought me to madness. If thats not enough to have you running to Christine Valmy then the hygene of that place should change your mind! For 4 months we were forced to use a bathroom that had one working light bulb that we reffered to as the "cat piss bathroom" because you guessed it, it smelled like a litter box. Thats right we were " washing our hands" and touching your face in a bathroom that smells like cat piss. We also had no way of transporting "clean" towles and bed linens from the washer and dryer back to the spa.The solution... to use the same cart the janitors used to transport heaping bags of garbage on. One last thing, you should also know that the executive director was put on probation by the NACCAS for "Failure to Comply with the Financial Practices and Management Standard" in 2011. I have been a loyal customer for over 10 years now. Few years back I became pure privilege member too. Unfortunately I couldn't make a purchase last 2 years with a new born and missed the cut off date of pure privilege expiry by 3 months. Not only did the customer service decline reinstating, but also said my collected points all over these years of purchase expired and can no longer use them. This is very unfair treatment for a loyal customer who spent expensive products all over these years and also spent $10 to purchase the pure privilege and have been buying their product all these time. Combination of Product quality and customer service only buys a customer. Beware when you decide on becoming loyal customer to a company that doesn't value it. read more

I recently had a cut & color done at the Aveda Institute. I always get my hair done at Aveda Salons. I just moved to nyc and wasn't sure where to go so I decided to try it out... I didn't have to wait long for an appointment, if you're available on weekdays you can usually get an appointment right away. I got a girl who was about to graduate (I was her last client.) She told me that if you book two services (cut/color) you'll always get someone more advanced because the newbies can't work that fast. I was actually done within two hours, which isn't bad. As for my cut: It turned out OK but I wasn't blown away or anything. What upset me about my visit was my color. It did not come out right at all. I've been coloring my hair a natural red with Aveda for the past year. I was very clear about what I wanted and we looked at a picture. The instructor came over and he approved the color. He said he thought I should be darker (to which I disagreed) and I feel like he might have confused her... When she finished my hair it was a super dark brown! Not red at all! And she kept saying something like "oh it's so dark in here" and "I can't wait to blow dry it so you can see how red it is" She never said anything about how it was the wrong color and neither did the instructor! At that point I was just embarrassed and surprised that they would pretend it was the right color, so I didn't say anything. I used to go to the Aveda Institute in SF and I'm happy to start coming to the Aveda institute in NY! It can be a bit difficult to make an appointment because they book up quickly, and the haircut can take a little longer than a regular hair cut, but I've never had a bad cut. While these stylists are in training, their instructor checks the cut every step of the way so you don't walk out of the place looking a mess. ;) I love Aveda products and everything they do for my hair, and I've also met some amazing stylists through getting my hair cut here. The funny thing is the haircut was fine, the experience was horrible. Firstly they are incompetent at making appointments. The first one i made "didn't go through" the system so i showed up and they couldn't service me. So i made another appointment, which i never got a confirmation call for, and when i showed up the receptionist had to look through twice to find me. And she was the manager! Then i was seen 30 minutes after my appointment time, and my haircut took an hour and a half. I just wanted half an inch off. My stylist took her sweet time while also splashing me in the face with water and wet hair and telling me stories about "funny" things that have gone wrong at the salon. I felt awkward and uncomfortable the whole time. It's not worth the cheap, average haircut. Don't go here. read more

I have been getting my hair cut here for over a year now. I've never done any of their treatments like highlights or foils, so I can't speak to that. The only time I had a not-so-great experience was when I got my hair chopped off for Locks of Love. The student didn't need to cut as much off as she did, which left me with a weird bob that made me look like I was 10. I didn't want to make her feel worse since the instructor called her out on it, in front of me. For all other times though, I've always had amazing students who are about to graduate and know what they are doing. They are always personable, friendly and attentive. I love the scalp massage with the aromatherapy oil. The instructors are also very helpful and will clean up your haircut if necessary. Honestly, after reading the reviews I was fairly nervous. But my student was very meticulous, checked in on what I wanted, and made the entire process a breeze. Her supervisor also checked up, and made sure I was happy with everything. For the price, you really cannot beat that, and everyone I encountered was really pleasant. I did not feel pressured to buy the products, although I was very tempted. My hair now has volume and is beautifully layered; I was very specific with what I wanted, so that probably helped. This is a great place to go for a deal on facials. The staff are very professional and not too pushy for you to purchase their products like other spas. The ambience isnt the best and some work could be done to make it look more comforting especially in the massage areas. I'm an average guy with average guy hair. This was my second time at this location for a haircut and eyebrows (yes, I get my eyebrows taken care of now and again). When I used to live in Houston, I would go to Aveda Institute in The Woodlands on a regular basis. Regarding this location. Both times I was underwhelmed. Their prices are not quite low enough to justify the difficulty getting an appointment (for the prime appts on weekends and around 5 p.m. it seems you have to book weeks in advance). The students are very careful (which means services take longer). They do an ok job. I paid $20 for a regular haircut (no wash). At my place in Astoria (an Aveda salon) it's $25 for cut and wash and they do an excellent job. Also, both time EVERYONE around me was getting a scalp massage (all women), but not me! Why!? I go here because I think Aveda makes some excellent products, but their services aren't the greatest. read more

Back in college when I had hair, I went to an Aveda salon to get my haircut. I always loved Carrie, who cut my hair, and she just sang Aveda's praises. She left a really lasting impression, and - I think - fostered my love of the brand and its products. I visit the Aveda Institute here in NYC only to buy products, usually just soap or shampoo (yes, I use shampoo on my shaved head). The prices are high, but not ridiculous. And I'm willing to admit that, yes, I pay $36 a bottle for aftershave/moisturizer, but now that I have a beard, I use it so sparingly that that $36 goes a long, long way. The people here are a mixed bag (as you'll see in the other reviews), so proceed, but proceed with a bit of healthy caution, and you'll likely have a pretty good experience. read more

If you have the time, you can't beat the price. Of course, an hour and a half to two hours is a long time to commit to a haircut, but if you're searching for a bargain, you're usually not worried about time. It is a total crap-shoot of who you will get, but I've been twice, and both times had very attentive students who really listened to what I wanted and helped me to mold that into a more polished look. You get to pick your own style, they don't just decide for you like some other places where you deal with students. I have not been in for a facial or any of the other services, just hair so far, but I've definitely had a really positive experience so far. I really like that they are geared towards a total experience, with the addition of a little neck rub, a dash of lip gloss, and of course, a cup of tea while you wait. I gave this is a 3 bc no matter what, the price is right. First of all, if you go in the morning, make an appt. for right when they open, otherwise you may wait for almost 30 minutes just to check in for your appointment. Second, the teachers are extremely unhelpful. Every time I have gone, they try to talk me up to more services. For example, i explained i was getting married in 9 days and just needed my roots touched up as my extensions match my current color perfectly. The teacher proceeded to tell me how bad of an idea that was and that I should get all-over color. HELLO? I finally had to just ask her if I could consult alone with the student bc the student was much more helpful. Good decision. Advice: Do not wear a shirt you care about to the appointment, as I have learned the hard way many times with color. My $100 Juicy blazer is now ruined bc the girl let the highlight dye drip down my back. Fantastic. All in all, the price is much better than regular Aveda salons. You're not paying for the atmosphere but for the most part the students are really friendly and just want to get a good review from you to their teacher. read more

I've only come for the spa package, 140 blissful minutes of face and back facials, so I can't speak to the hair cuts. But this is totally worth the money and it's very enjoyable. I used to get my hair cut by students for free when I had long layers, and it was always great, but that's because you can't mess long layers up! Now that I have a bob, I pay top dollar, and I'm surprised people who have difficult haircare, like color or short cuts, would even consider getting that done by a student. Too much risk. Anyway, you cannot beat these prices and you still get all the professional care you would get at Bliss, for a third of the price! I will go back again for sure. read more

Aveda was a good experience. The price for the service was adequate; but don't expect that a $30 haircut will get you a "perfect" haircut either. The got the job done which was what this really is all about. I got a long bob cut; the styling wasn't special. It took 2h+ to my student to get it done; and she did cut her finger whilst trimming my hair. Pros: Teacher and supervisors came a few times to check everything was on point. My student asked what I wanted, was gracious and courteous. Cons: $30 is too much for what they do, my student cut her finger, the waiting place does look like a high-school locker room, they do some pushing of their products but the most annoying thing was that the student is with you WHILE YOU PAY which is super uncomfortable as you really don't know if you should/how tip or them seeing you handling your money ad looking guilty. read more

I love this place! Before my second visit for a hair cut, my train was delayed (big surprise #CuomosMTA) and I was twenty minutes late for my appointment. I called and they were nice enough to reserve my appointment. The shampoo and cut were great. I am pretty simply, but I love a series of good layers that grow well. Both times, my layers work well. My only complaint is that I never receive the massage for stress relief. I always fill the after-cut survey out to reflect this, but next time, I return, I am going to ask for this at beginning of the service. Then, this place would be close-to perfect! read more

WARNING: This place is NOT what you might imagine. I counted on my brand impression of Aveda--"high quality, natural, professional, etc." So I went to this salon thinking they might attract and train top notch students to give me a great style at a "discount". WRONG!!! I cant go into details without revealing myself to the stylist who has my personal info, but she was so unbelievably clumsy, uncoordinated, totally amateur and seemed CLUELESS (even though she is at the END of her training) and downright dangerous with scissors risking your eye sight! I now see why they have you sign a legal waiver when you arrive! I imagine there MIGHT be talented students here, but you are randomly assigned and Aveda will coldly take your money and not care one bit whether you were satisfied or not. "Hey, its manhattan baby, you dont like it, tough luck. there are plenty more suckers out there, see ya!" Sorry to be so negative but I sincerely hope this helps anyone either stick with their current stylist (I will def go back to mine), go to an experienced stylist, or at least go here with a more realistic expectation of what you MIGHT be in for. good luck! read more

Reliable and very inexpensive. You have to book rather far in advance, though. If it doesn't freak you out to have students work on your hair, this place is a great bet. I never got a bad haircut or color here. REVISION: I had a less than stellar experience with highlights recently. The girl was too timid, not strong enough, gently put color on my hair very slowly. I can only remember two times in my entire life where I had a great haircut, and this was one of those places that gave me a great haircut. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the amount of time it takes. I was there for about 2 hours or more, but I was in no rush at all so it really didn't bother me. For many people, this could be a HUGE deal. I actually got a beginner hairstylist for $20, and he was so precise and so mindful about what I wanted, that he did an excellent job! I've had color correction done and it was $97 and anywhere else would of been $350 + it wasn't perfect, but my stylist got it as light as she could, actually i asked her too, i just found it too light. Though it pains me to drop $200 on a cut and highlight, I have been known to do it before. (And as we all know, in New York that's not a hard feat to come by...) Trying to stick to a budget, I went to the Aveda Institute 2 months ago, spent $75, and absolutely LOVED the result. I may even venture to say it was the best hair cut/highlight I've ever had. Yes, it took twice as long as it normally would because the student was being very thorough, and her teacher needed to check every step, but I'm sure that's why it turned out so well. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! This is where I go to get my hair done- I am woefully negligent in getting my hair done regularly, but still, I have been here three times to get a full head of highlights and will keep going back. In short, it takes forever, but it's worth it. I was a little scared the first time i went, but the students are so eager to please that they check with their instructor before every move. First they ask you what color you're looking for, then they consult with their instructor, then they check back with you before, during, and after the color... it may take up more time, but it definitely eases your fear if you're worried about their lack of experience. If you're going in for a full head of highlights, I'd budget about four hours to sit there (disclaimer: I have long hair, and a lot of it). But, like I said, it's worth it. For around $100, which is what I'd spend at any old cheap-ass salon, I get amazing color (they use two colors to give your highlights a lot of depth) and the most meticulous, eager-to-please (and NICE) hair stylist you'll ever meet. If you have the luxury of a few extra hours, you're so much better off going here than a random crap salon. The fact that you're breathing in lovely Aveda aromas instead of toxic bleach stench makes it even more worthwhile. Oh and one more thing- the salon is quite big, so there's plenty of room for everyone. I'm going tomorrow for a MUCH needed haircut. For 20 bucks, how could you go wrong? I LOVE this place! You pay $20 for a perfect haircut and blowout. It takes a while longer than a normal cut, since the student is being really careful, but if you have a couple of free hours it's definitely worth it. I've been here twice and both times were magical. The first girl I got had only cut two people's hair before me and was super nervous but my hair turned out great. An instructor checks in before they start the cut and then comes back afterward to see how the student did. Absolutely no pressure from the students to buy products, either. They're required to take you through the product section and fill a basket but if you hadn't expressed interest in anything they have no problem with just putting the stuff right back on the shelf. I just got back from my second trip and I don't plan on going to an overpriced salon again anytime soon. read more

I've been going to Aveda for over 10 years and have always received great haircuts here though I must say in my opinion they haven't been complicated ones. That of course changed when I met Paige about a year ago to experiment with color. She was amazing, so amazing that I came back so she could do a balayage and it turned out great. I was fortunate enough to have her three times, for a cut, for a color and then for the balayage. The students I've had haven't been shy and I appreciate that. If they are unsure of something they ask and I respect that. The teachers in turn help them and at times have jumped in to help finish the cut off especially if they know what needs finishing is what's most prominent. And lastly I like their products and product recommendations but I like that they aren't pushy about you buying their products where other salons are. read more

I visited the Aveda Institute for the first time last Friday. I heard about the $20 haircuts and was sold. How bad could it be? And if you're like me you don't have or want to spend $100 - $400 at the salon which seems to be the norm here in NYC. With so many salons you'd think the prices would be a bit more competitive. I went in to chop off 5+ inches of my hair. I came armed with a photo and fully prepared to deal with the good or bad haircut I may end up walking out with. The girl who cut my hair was quiet and shy which is not really something I look for in a hair dresser. I need someone with energy and creativity. I get it's a school but I image most of the students only get to practice bang cuts and trims. I thought I was really presenting a good challenge for her. After a looooong 4 hrs in the chair I was finally finished. I didn't really end up with the haircut I was looking for but the girl really did a great job. Her instructor had to assist a few times and I could tell she was nervous as all hell but she really did a really good job for only being 4 months into the program. Even though I plan on going to another salon to get the haircut I was hoping for I would recommend the Aveda Institute for trims, bang cuts and maybe even color. The price is worth it and if you have 4 hours to kill this is the place for you to save a few bucks! read more

It is a school, it is a school, it is a school! I had the $50 self renewal facial which stated 90 minutes with foot AND scalp massage. I told the student five times my preference of stronger massage, but she kept on her gentle almost could-not-feel-it touches. When asked why no scalp massage, she answered it was one OR the other. Besides, the total service was only 80 minutes. The whole service was relaxing though very chilly, since I was only half covered with a tiny sheet. She kept on putting different products on my face and did minimum extraction (which I could see my blackheads right afterwards.) If you just want to experience Aveda's products and relax but not a facial, you could come here. Or save your $50. read more

I've been here a few times. Twice for a haircut & highlights and once for a bikini wax. My first haircut/color was great. The girl was very nice and did a great job; giving me highlights and lowlight for depth. My second trip was not quite as successful. The girl was shocked that the school had been able to color my hair that way, even though the instructor went over with her how to do it. She also didn't have the best styling technique. I imagine the experience mainly depends on how advanced the student is. My hair didn't turn out bad the second time, just not quite as great as the first. The bikini wax was great. It was my first one and the girl was very good about explaining what she would be doing and making sure I was comfortable. I'm hoping to go back for this service again soon. read more

I've always been happy using the Aveda institute in Philly, where I'm from, so I thought I'd give the New York one a try. Wrong! I've never even made it through the front door. Every time I call to try and get an appointment, I'm told I have to wait at least a week or two. (For the record, I don't work a 9-5 and my schedule is completely open during the day). The most recent time I called the girl who answered the phone was so rude it completely turned me off. She really rushed me through the questions I had and when I asked about a particular service on their website she acted like I was a complete moron and told me they don't do that anymore. Okay.. well why is it on your website? They had no openings for two full weeks and she really didn't seem too interested in actually finding me an appointment. She was so unpleasant I know I'll never even try calling again. I'd rather drive two hours to Philly for a good experience than take the subway 10 minutes to Soho for a crappy one. read more

Yes, 5 stars. Why? Well, I have been going to the Aveda Institute to get my hair colored every month since 2007 and I have had only one semi-bad experience. One student didn't wash out the color very well from the back of my head, that was it! I have also been getting highlights and haircuts every few months since 2007, which has also worked out amazingly. I have great trust in the students and teachers there and they act accordingly. I have tried many different colors and styles too. I depend on them to know what they are doing and they always follow through. I always recommend them to friends and family. Plus, the prices are not bad for NYC, in fact, that is the reason I started going there in the first place. And it turns out, I seriously don't need to spend a lot on my hair, which means I have money to spare and that was super helpful coming to NYC as a grad student. I've been many times to the Aveda Institute and I think it is a really good deal. I have very fine, straight hair that is never going to be exciting. All I need is a simple cut. Some visits I feel the cut is a bit better than others, but I've found that to be true at any salon, even when I go to the same person over and over. For the price you really can't beat it. I've also had facials. One was amazing one was ok. I've spent hundreds on facials that were only ok, which is much more disappointing than an ok facial for $50. And hey, sometimes you score big with a really great one. All in all, I find the quality to consistently be better than the price. Which for me, equals a fantastic deal worth five stars. read more

You're going to a beauty school so with that in mind you need to budget a few hours depending on what you need done. But, if you have the time I highly recommend going to Aveda. My hair dresser was lovely. She really took the time to listen to me, provided her own suggestions and ensured that my hair came out looking great! Considering my last hair cut was at a professional salon and they did a horrible job I am thrilled with Aveda and will absolutely go back. I know people find the product sales pitch at the end annoying, it is, but you also must know that this is part of the students training since at real salons I've had purchasing their products pushed on me much harder. I work nearby and I am a loyal Aveda user so I thought I would give this place a try especially since haircuts at Aveda salon's in New York can be very expensive. I've been using Aveda salon for years out of state and I generally pay around $75 including tip. In New York City however, I'd likely pay over $120 for my length and thickness of hair. Since I did not know what to expect, I thought I would go in for a haircut the required little technical skills. I have very thick hair so a good haircut is actually a little difficult because if they don't cut it right you can really tell. I called to make an appointment and requested a senior/experienced student. When I got there I was seated and I'm glad I asked the student how long she had been there because that was only her third week. So I immediately requested a more senior student per my original appointment. So my advice is make sure you know who you get because even though you asked for a senior student at the time of your appointment the teachers that run the appointments might shuffle you to another student they feel might need practice and therefore want to give them the client; I am guessing this is what happened. But it really is up to you as the client to decide who you want to cut your hair. They immediately and very nicely put me in with another young woman who was about to graduate and she was extremely professional and had great energy. I told her how picky I am about my hair because it's so thick long and full, and when my hair is not cut properly you can really tell. So she promised me that she would take her time with my haircut and she did. She washed my hair she used products I was familiar with she was generous with the amount of product. When she's finished she calls her teacher and her teacher will come over to check the work. If anything needs correcting they will correct it. In my case nothing needed correcting. After that she showed me with the mirror what it look like in the back and it was absolutely straight. I didn't get a blow dry because I don't like to blow dry my hair even though a blow dry is included in the $30 price. The next day I flat iron my hair that's when I was going to really be able to tell if it was straight and it was perfect! I only gave them one less star because they should have put me with the senior student from the get go as per my appointment. But once I asked it was a very easy fix. All in all it was worth it and I will definitely be going back for another easy haircut and I may even try a color my roots next time. read more

I called the phone # listed on the website which was answered by a call center, and booked an evening appointment weeks in advance. I showed up early to my appointment, the receptionist could barely muster a smile, and I was told that in fact, I do NOT have an appointment and my phone # could be found no where in the system. I explained that I booked through the telephone # on their website and confirmed the location. There was nothing she could do because apparently all the students were taking an exam tonight. There were no evening appointments that worked with my schedule for the rest of the week (and I was going out of town) and the disinterested receptionist gave an insincere apology and said that they have a new booking "system." Very disappointed in the disorganization and lack of customer service. Total lack of accountability from the Aveda team that couldn't care less that their customers schedule appointments around work and family. read more
