I was in dire need of a haircut and unfortunately my stylist at Shampoo Avenue B had moved. I heard amazing things about Gabriel Saba from my relatives who have been going to him for many years so I decided to switch stylists and regret absolutely nothing. I went to the shop on 3/18/23 to get a wash and blow dry. At the last minute I decided to get a cut. My hair stylist was Leonidas who was very professional and understanding of my needs. She listened intently and took her time while cutting my hair. She continued to ask me how I was feeling and she included me in on how much hair to cut. I am so glad and so pleased that she was there for me. I love my new hair cut; completely satisfied. I plan to continue receiving my hair care and hair styling services from Leonidas. Moving here from Boston, I left a really great (kinda weird and eccentric) hairstylist who mentioned he learned his dry-cut method from John Sahag in New York. So as I fell in luv with this type of hair cut, I decided to give it a go...despite their $150 starting price (that was about 7 years ago). I started off with Raphael, who took his time to consider what I wanted...ultimately, a slightly updated look while keeping the length of my hair. He somewhat succeeded in that he did keep my hair length, but I didn't feel like my look was updated. Though it was a nice cut. My second visit cost me a little over $200, and this was for this year. Talk about inflation. Raphael was still there but was not working the day I could come in, so I was set up with an appointment with Gabriel. Gabriel and his assistance were both very nice, provided me water, and seemed to listen to what I was looking for. Raphael even mentioned that I can return for a free bang trimming, as the growing out of my bangs was a concern I had. Ultimately, I got a decent hair cut that on occasion (after the fact), reminded me of the Asian mullet I have always tried to avoid as my hair grew out (this time I had a bob and was growing the hair back long). Maybe it wasn't Gabriel, and it's just how my hair grows back at a particular length...but the reason why I gave them 2 stars is that for the price....I know I can and have experienced better. 2 of my favorite hair cuts here in New York came from the Bumble and Bumblee free hair cut workshops. Go figure. I am still looking for the right hairstylist, for the right price. Unfortunately, that hairdresser is still in Boston. Sigh. read more

This is a celebrity salon, Jennifer Aniston among others comes here for a cut. The salon is ultra modern and cool with a jungle-like decor (sounds weird but it works). Rafael is a sweetheart, he will make you beautiful and give you the best cut ever! I have long hair and I like to preserve the length, I HATE when you tell a stylist 1/2 inch and they somehow chop off 1.5inches, what's up with that?!? Rafael actually listens and respects what you ask him to do, or if you're not sure, he'll share his ideas and help you get the look that's right for you. Only downside: waaay pricey. read more

I go to New York regularly and love to see Ray when I go. I have posted some of my positive and negative experience with stylists here on the west coast, and I wish my pockets were deep enough to fly Ray out on my private jet to do my very 'difficult' hair (fine, curly, slow growing). Aside from his obviously stellar technical abilities and deep knowledge of his craft, I especially love the energy he radiates. He is not insufferably pretentious or self important as some of his colleagues can be; he has a kindness, modesty, and whimsical humor that is so endearing. I think no matter how successful he becomes he will retain these qualities. In addition to the magic he worked on my hopeless mop, I have friends who he has similarly transformed, so he is consistent. Consistency can be a big issue and he is consistently superb. read more

I can't recommend Ray enough!!!!!! I met him through a friend who recommended me through the John Sahag Workshop. I was VERY wary about taking her recommendation because I am a mixed race male with hair that would be damaged if straightened. I have a rat's nest of curls and waves that very few stylist are barbers can cut satisfactorily, let alone well! But I trust my friend (Sheila J. to be exact ;-) and gave it a whirl. I am SOOO glad I did!!! Ray transformed my hair! I had no idea the damage I'd been doing to my hair over the years, let alone the congestion my various hair products had been causing to the pores of my scalp! It took various treatments, but my hair is now the healthiest it has ever been throughout my 32 years of living! This salon has given me the best hair cut of my life several times... I have recently moved away from NYC and am out of state, so I don't go here anymore, but after having my hair cut in my new location, I am seriously missing Gabriel's talent. Gabriel is sweet, fun, and incredibly talented. The first 2 hair cuts I got here were basically trims, and I was shocked as to how much care he put in to the cut. I was sitting in the chair for 55 minutes at least and he was cutting the whole time... he looked like Edward Scissor hands he was moving so fast (they do dry cuts)... He cross checked and cross checked to make sure it was all perfect, and he took weight out of it, and made sure it was up to his high standards... They then flat iron it and it looks fab so you don't even need to have them wash it and blow it out if you don't want to. They have an apprentice blow it out for you and they are all very cute as well. Expect to spend at least 1 1/2 to 2 hours at the salon though, they are thorough. The 3rd haircut I got here was a huge chop. I donated 12 inches to locks of love and Gabriel made sure I didn't look like a "lion" as I call it when sometimes you chop your hair and it all poofs out b/c of the weightlessness. They also took care of mailing my hair to locks of love for me. Gabriel was able to help me decide what would look best on my head and I was so pleased. After getting a regular hair cut at a place by my new home... I was kinda upset because the girl didn't even seem like she was paying any attention and I went home and had to trim it again myself. Made me surely appreciate the Sahag hair cut.... I took a star away for 2 reasons 1. price is high... it cost me $200 + tax to see Gabriel who is a senior stylist... and then you must tip and the hair wash girl needs a tip too...so all in all... it cost me $260... 2. it does take a REALLY long time for the cut/blow/dry... so i basically have to clear my afternoon to make the appointment here. That being said, Gabriel said since they cut the hair dry, the style grows out the way you cut it so it won't loose shape and you can wait much longer between cuts...so I only went ever 6-8 months anyway...and after having a crummy hair cut... I would gladly go back and pay 200 dollars to have such a good cut. Next time I am in NY I will be making a trip to get to that Salon! read more

The first time I went to her, she corrected my color, and with just single process she gave me the most gorgeous, multi-dimensional red that so flattered my skin tone. I've been going to her ever since, and her work is consistently outstanding! She is passionate about what she does and is such a fun and nice person. The products she uses aren't harsh, and leave your hair really shiny. She always runs on time so you're not left unexpectedly spending your whole afternoon at the salon. Everyone who works at the studio is professional and friendly so it is just all around such a pleasant experience. I have been to all the top salons in New York and have gone to top stylists at Oribe, Bruno Dessange, Roy Teeluck, Salon AKS and more but have to say that by far Franny gives me the best cuts. He was very responsive when making an appointment, took care with my consultation and took his time cutting my hair. My hair can be difficult to cut yet I felt very confident as Raphael, a senior educator, supervised. I have had my hair cut at top salons for 30 years (doing model cuts now to save funds) and was surprised that a stylist could really impress me. I was nervous about returning to the salon since Covid 19 hit NYC but I must admit I felt safe and secure at Sahag. Social distancing was honored and Gabriel is still on his game! I felt frumpy and listless for the past 4 months with my pre covid hair. With my new cut I feel rejuvenated-honestly. I have been going to Cynthia for years now and she is truly unrivaled. My first haircut with Cynthia was after I got butchered at some other salon and Cynthia was a god send. Not only did she fix the damage, she transformed it into one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I've been going to her ever since. She makes you feel comfortable in her extraordinarily capable hands, and she makes you appreciate hair cutting as an art form. No joke! You have to experience it for yourself. I just got back from having the best haircut I've had in ages! Cut and style 5***** Customer service was 5***** everyone was very calm, cool but accessible, kind and genuine. The cut was the best and included a relatively lengthy consultation -- see below. I have lived in NYC for 5 years and have had services and cuts at places like Rita Hazan with a top Allure stylist and have not been impressed. (I was double booked and paid $250 to wait in a chair for over an hour). Well it had been an embarrassingly long time since I trimmed my long locks so I googled "dry cut" because I like my cut when it is dry - you can really see how it moves and will hang this way. I found Sahag specializing in the dry cutting technique and decided to give it a go. I called and asked if I could have a junior stylist but the price was still a little high and since I didn't know anyone who has been here and I'm trying to save some $ for travel, I decided to see if they had any 'trainees' below junior stylist. The receptionist informed me that Alexis is still an assistant and in training and provides cuts once a week under supervision for only $40. This is the best BEST deal in manhattan because Alexis has already 3+ years at Sahag. I arrived a little bit early and was immediately accommodated. Alexis and I discussed my hair issues and my desires. Then Rafael, her instructor, came over to also discuss how to assess my hair -- this included a discussion of my whole build (tall person), face shape, hair type, head shape (yes, the back of my head is weirdly flat and he saw that!!!). Anyway, I have never had such an amazing consultation - I consider it a consult about what would look good on me but really he was teaching Alexis how to assess me as a client. It was amazing. Throughout the cut Alexis did a great job chatting with me or letting me sleep and Rafael would come over and discuss techniques - I had a weird thin spot somewhere and he was able to make it look even. I have not had a stylist ever address this issue and it made the layers around my face work much better. Afterwards, the receptionist who I had been working with was excited to see the results - but not in a fake way but genuinely interested. All in all : LoVE. I will be back here for either Rafael or Alexis I met another stylist - didn't get his name - but he was across from me and also checking in - he did great work on another woman and he was very friendly. Angelica, oh Angelica, what an artist she is. When I had my hair cut with Angelica, she spent a long time cutting it to perfection. There was so much attention to detail that I couldn't believe what I was missing out of from other salons. When I first stepped foot at this salon, I felt like a fish out of water. I don't normally get cuts at fancy salons. But instantly they offered me tea or coffee or water, followed by a silky robe. Angelica, walked me through different ideas. I instantly knew that whatever she thought was going to be the best solution. Cut, cut, cut, micro-cuts that allow your hair to stay looking great for months. I have been going to Chaquira Carreno for 8 years and can honestly say she is the best colorist out there! In the roughly 80 times she has done my hair, I have never been disappointed or left the salon thinking my hair was anything but perfect. Chaquira keeps my blonde hair incredibly healthy, which is a miracle given the fact that I have naturally dark brown hair. Before I started going to Chaquira, I couldn't get my hair to grow past my shoulders. After a few months of going to her there was a noticeable difference in the health of my hair, and I was able to start growing it out. I moved from Fort Lauderdale to NYC a month ago and have been looking for a Hair Salon in the area. 2 weeks ago, as I was staying at the Waldorf Astoria, I decided to try John Sahag Workshop. I called right before to get there, the receptionist asked for my credit card informations to hold the appointment which I thought was ridiculous! 5 minutes later, I walked in and asked for a blow dry but I specifically insisted on having body and curls. I even showed her a picture! The hair stylist said: "no problem!". I ended up without curls and too much volume! It took her for ever and honestly I can do better at home! I kept telling her I wasn't satisfied but it did not seem to bother her. The truth is, she doesn't know how to blow dry hair. The receptionist tried to charge me $78 for something I did not like! I think they are way too expensive I will never go back to this place.. read more
