When you book an appointment at Aveda Institute, understand one thing and understand it well. These are students... you will get what you asked for but it may take a while! I went in for a single process color, trim, and blow dry... it took about 3 and a half hours. My hair DID look fantastic though and the total was only about $65. If you go in for a new look, it's best that you be REALLY certain about what you want. Don't rely on these guys to make executive decisions based on your vague instruction. This place is great! I am giving it 5 stars knowing that I am grading a beauty school and not a formal beauty salon. However, everything about my experience was just as great as some of my favorite beauty salons except for perhaps the ambience (which I will mention later). I came to Aveda Institute to get a facial and decided to upgrade and get the full rejuvenation package and boy was it AMAZING! Such a great deal! For $80, I got a 90 minute facial and a caribbean therapy back treatment that included aroma therapy and a foot massage throughout the process. Honestly, you can't find a deal like that in this city. My aesthetician was JOREL and he was fantastic. I honestly want to know where he goes once he graduates from Aveda as I will gladly go to whatever salon he ends up working at (as long as it is in the city of course :) ). Throughout the whole process Jorel gave me tips for my skin type and although I know he was obviously working to sell Aveda products, I really found the discussion helpful and ended up buying two products (the eye cream and a toner). When you get to Aveda, you have to sign a waiver saying that you know that everyone is in training. The waiver made me wonder a bit but honestly what could go wrong with a facial! I guess the only thing that could go wrong would be the extractions but Jorel did those really well. Also, before he started the extractions he had his instructor come in just for a second opinion on the areas of my face that were best to extract. At the end of the procedure Jorel's instructor came to ask me some feedback on his work. I gladly gave him a 9 out of 10. The back room - where you get your facial- is fully of several pods with curtains. I would say this is the only minor draw back. While they are playing soothing music, you do end up hearing conversations in the other pods. Although, I think this is a pretty minor issue considering the price. Let me start out by saying, if you are someone that takes haircuts seriously and are seeking precise execution of difficult styles this is not the place for you. If, however, you are merely looking for a trim and aren't looking to pay the typical salon price, this place definitely gets the job done. I think if you come into this situation with the right attitude then you can have a very pleasant experience. They use nice products (Aveda products - duh) and the stylists do care how it turns out because they are being graded on their work and therefore are directly affected by the outcome. They might seems a little nervous, but who wouldn't with a supervisor looking over their shoulder. Don't let their nerves scare you. I booked a haircut appointment with a graduate student and was assigned to a girl named Samal. ($20 from an intermediate student and $30 from a grad student) She was very gentle with me, even when she washed my hair. As it turns out, we went to the same college before she decided to get into a beauty school. I showed her three pictures of the hair style that I ultimately want to get but wanted to just get rid of my ombré, as in...cut it off. So, she gave me a concave cut from my shortest layer. The instructor and everyone else loved the cut, as did I. But I thought my scalp was going to burn off when she was blowdrying my hair. I've been coming here for years. I always come out with a good cut, back when I had a pixie and now that I've got long hair. The students are sweet and try very hard. Sometimes, they make a mistake, but the instructors are all skilled stylists and come right away to fix it. This is a great option if you don't want to spend a lot of money. As far as I see it, at Astor Place, DramaticsNYC and Super Cuts they rush too much, and worse, don't listen. I had to wash and blow dry my hair on my own as soon as I got home cause the student used too much product- I couldn't recognize my hair! I wish teachers were more involved to what the students are doing. The girl that did my hair was unable to listen and understand my needs (i have great hair for blow-drying and styling in general- you have to have two left hands to do a bad job). honestly, she is wasting her own time and money trying to be something that takes talent at the first place! I came in relaxed, no plans for the afternoon or evening so I came in armed with patience but it ended as a very disappointing experience overall. read more

Best haircut I've had in years--a wash, cut and blow-dry for under $30. I might've just gotten lucky, but I was assigned a Level II student who knew exactly how to style my thick, straight Asian hair. It took about 2 hours (primarily because my stylist had to run my cut by her supervisors every half-hour or so), which was totally worth it. I normally have difficulty because my hair is so thick that even high-end Asian salons don't know what to do with it, but my stylist advised me, and I ended up with low-maintenance layers that have grown out nicely. Would definitely go back for Aveda's spa treatments or another cut. read more

Went in for a shampoo and blowout to support their "Earth Day" celebrations in April. All blowouts were for $20 and on Earth day they were donating everything to charity (including gratuity). Ended up with SUPER greasy hair after the blow out - remember everyone here is a learner and if they don't understand hair type/s, using the wrong products can ruin the experience. However, not fretting for $20 bucks. Learning schools can be a hit or a miss, and this one was clearly a miss. I don't blame the stylist - but the teacher who was doing the rounds. The process would be more effective if she helped the stylist - suggested products & did a spot check in the end to make sure the students are doing an adequate job. Walk in if you are in the area and are feeling adventurous...but don't bother seeking it out especially for a treatment. read more

I come here from time to time with a friend of mine when we are looking to be a little pampered and groomed without breaking the bank. I've always been a huge fan of Aveda and their products can't be surpassed and I've always made it a point to use Aveda salons and obviously a lot of other people do because they always have quite the following. This is the esthetician academy, so if you are looking for a basic clean-up, re-trim your layers, blowout, and throw in a facial or massage this is definitely the place to do it. For bleaching, highlights, any complex cut, and waxing- I stick to the professionals. Novice waxing?? No thanks. Sounds painful with potentially even more painful correction by a senior or dangerous aftermath. Bleach? I have extremely tricky hair to get just right as do many dark brunettes. Coloring, especially bleaching, is a skill even the licensed don't always pull off just right, let alone a novice. I learned this lesson the hard way when my cousin just started school and thought she had the hang of it with some tin foil and 40 volume. It required a missed day of work and $200 of corrective color, Stick to only truly professionally trained, licensed colorists. It's an academy so there's no extreme spa vibe going on, but for $55 intensive facials and $30 clean cuts and blowouts it's a great go-between spot. Times and appointment can be a little delayed, but have some patience. This is to be expected. Overall, the staff is very professional and enthusiastic and i do feel like I am in capable (if not licensed) hands. ((Bonus- Aquagrill is a few steps down. A school is as good as its teachers and this goes for Aveda Institute. Take a risk coming here with anything other than a simple cut and you may see what I mean. So, this is a school. Of course. One signs more release forms at the Aveda Institute than at Mount Sinai for minor surgery. The students here are clearly a mixed bag but they are very nice and very open which is good. I have been here more than once and I was raving, RAVING about the place until this last experience which was less than stellar. I came out with a fro' and worse hair ( minus the roots) than when I came in, 4.5 hours earlier. My hair was oddly sticky throughout and there was not enough time (!) to dry my hair all of the way. Sadly, some lovely highlights went AWOL and my hair became darker in spots. I had to go home and rewash my hair. This is not cool. The student was really not to blame but because "this is a school", the teachers kinda are. I go in for root touch ups and a little highlighting. I came out four and a half hours later ( that is the norm for color!) with darker than expected roots,knotted and dry hair and a sinking feeling that toner was left in. Two supervisors go around often enough but they do not really coordinate their efforts. The teacher/supervisors said they would be back during the most important part but they both vanished and left for the day (supposedly). But after insisting, one of them came out and what was mild disappointment became something else. The teacher's response was inadequate to say the least and that is what found most diappointing. As soon as something goes wrong, the student who was so kind and really was trying had no explanation for why the results were not close to what was discussed. The supervisor stuck to the script which was basically "this is a school" and although that is indeeed the case, this pat response is not appropriate or even positive. Acknowleding that what was requested was not done is essential in providing a service. 'But this is a school". The supervisor would and could not do otherwise and this is not the best way to handle the situation or to even demonstrate to students how to deal with dissatisfaction. Offering to have one come back so they can try again would be a start and more probing questions, basically- listening would have been also good. But this is a school and that means well, even the teachers stick around and not leave before class is done. One major complaint is that the brushes used are not so good for long or curly hair and I am sorry but they do not know how to do a blow out with ripping your head apart. For so much woo-woo about pampering, I defy anyone to write about their blow-outs and say otherwise. But this is a school. The same day I saw three other clients get upset aboout some aspect of their experience and every time, it was not handled properly. I was confident this would not be me but when time was ticking away and the hair was partially dried- I was not so pleased. I was patient for almost five hours. The teachers have to get the students making the color faster and they have to exemplify follow-through. So, the prices are good although it is a Russian roulette. With your hair. You get what you pay for. $50 for a 90 minute facial/foot scrub/scalp,arm,neck message. Amazing right? Nope. A student aka a young lady learning to-be in-the-know is practicing her lessons on you. Mine didn't know what was in the products, she tried her best to talk around the lack of knowledge. And her massage techniques were lacking. Local nail salon - way better. I asked for an under eye treatment. And now have itchy red skin. Again, not knowing what's in the products is a hazard. The plus? Getting slathered with top notch Aveda products. Making the call to book an appointment took some courage, and several days before I did it. The mixed reviews made me picture a scenario in which I went home with a lopsided haircut and in tears. This made me hesitate to take a gamble, and I wondered if this just wasn't for me. In the end I called, and within a week I had my appointment. Going into this, I was well aware it would take much longer than a regular haircut. The girl assigned to me was actually sweet, attentive, and intelligent. She wouldn't cut more than she was comfortable with, without going to the instructor, which was much appreciated. In the end, the instructor double-checked and made a few minimal snips here and there, so that means she did a great job on her own! The cut took 2 hours, with a short scalp massage. If you make an appointment, don't make plans afterwards and you won't feel rushed. Be clear in what you want, bring a picture, and be positive! Sure you might get someone that is half heartedly cutting hair just to find a job, but your chances of getting someone great are also good. I left feeling very happy. For a $20 cut (before tip), I was even happier. Don't feel pressured to buy the products either. read more

The girl who helped me today was very sweet and attentive, but not at all experienced in cutting men's hair. She was supposed to be an "advanced" student -- and therefore faster and slightly more expensive ($30 instead of $20). Instead, she seemed never to have cut a man's head of hair. Does Aveda not train their students in men's hair? In the end my haircut took 2 hours and 10 minutes! I'm sorry, but my hair is short to begin with. How can it take this long? Her teacher had to walk her through the second half of the cut, but even then, the teacher didn't check the entire cut at the very end to see that it was slightly off. I would have stuck around but I had a meeting. I intimated to the teacher about how long it was taking, though she tried to assure me it was standard for ensuring quality men's cuts. When I went to the front desk to pay and tell them about my experience, their first reaction was "Why are you telling me this? I'm retail, not styling." But even when they finally processed how ridiculous it is for a men's cut to take 2 hours and 10 minutes (no coloring, no treatments, not even styling -- i ran out of time for that), they didn't think to extend some sort of adjusted price for this novice cut. I was also perturbed by the review sheet they ask you to complete at the end of the cut. There were so many questions making sure the student asked if they upsold product, I found no spot (other than the blank at the bottom) to indicate the extreme time it took to complete the haircut. I appreciate the student's hard work but her teacher should know better than to assign a beginning student to someone who requests an advanced student. I love Aveda products but not their salon. I can't tell you how pleased I was with my recent visit to the Aveda institute for a haircut. A young lady named Brielle gave me one of my favorite haircuts ever! (hurry up--I think she leaves at the end of August) I have been to many expensive salons all over the city after my former hairdresser moved to California. Always paying $125 + for a haircut, no one had stuck since my guy moved away. Like most people these days, I am trying to save $, so I decided to stop by Aveda Institute. I went with a senior student, which increased my haircut from $20 to $30. Brielle was pleasant and professional, talked just enough and allowed me time to read my magazine (I would recommend bringing your own). After the haircut, I had an amazing blowout. When another student found themselves with nothing to do, she came over and joined in. So my blowout took half the time (I have thick longish hair and sometimes a blowout can take 30 minutes). In the end, the teacher came over and checked everything out and then Brielle took me over to look at makeup and talk about other products. I ended up buying some powder base and the delicious tea I had sampled during my haircut I couldn't recommend this enough and I hope a salon in NYC reads this and snatches up Brielle! read more

I used to come here all the time and stopped years ago when I left in tears. I should not have tried them out again. Horrible. First, the prices they list online are not accurate. I got a partial foil, listed as $55., and was charged $78. The woman said the price was $60 and they charge for a $15 "gloss" (which I have no idea what that's for because my hair is the opposite of glossy right now). Second, I know these are students and all, but 4 hours for a partial foil??! I've had major surgery that took less time. I asked for highlights and low lights. I picked 2 significantly different colors, both that would stand out. It turned out looking like nobody did anything - the same as it was when I walked in, GRAY INCLUDED! The gray still shows! In fact, she didn't go all the way up to the scalp in the first place so that even if the color took and looked amazing, there'd still be the 1/2" of gray roots showing. It looks stupid. I have done better at home with a bottle of Clairol. At the end of my 4-hour residency here, I asked her to blow out my hair. As she finished with the blow dryer - read as, after she was done pulling my hair in every direction - she applied 1/4 tsp of anti-frizz product. My hair was still very frizzy. She tried, I guess, but it really looked bad. I will never go back there. read more

I received the worst haircut here that I've EVER gotten in my life. I get a free student haircut pretty much every time I need a cut, so i'm used to patiently letting an unsure student nip at my hair. This is the first and only time i'll ever go to Aveda. I've been much happier with my free Bumble & Bumble haircuts. Aveda isn't even free; I had to pay $20 for a mushroomed bob that was completely crooked and uneven, complete with random chunks of hair sticking out along my neckline. The "professional hairstylist" who was supposed to be watching these students was way too hands off and distractedly approved of my haircut before letting me walk out the door looking like my hair had been cut by my 5-year-old sister in her sleep. If you are looking for a free/cheap haircut, you'll be better off at just about any of the other salons that offer them via craigslist. read more

Went in as a blow dry model. Simple enough. I told the stylist I had the keratin treatment in my hair (1) via email, (2) before she washed my hair and (3) while she blow dried. All while talking about the benefits of using non-sulfuric products on my hair since it removes ALL the keratin. Lo and behold, after drying she does the prerequisite Aveda product shpeel and shows me all the products used on my hair that day AND ALL CONTAINED SULFUR. Thanks Aveda for ruining a $200 treatment on my hair. WARNING, do not sign up for Aveda or any other hair model opportunity if you want something done that is beyond grade school level. If regular shampoo, one length cuts and one color dye job is all you need, this MAY be the place. Otherwise, go to a real salon. read more

Aveda would get 5 stars if not for the fact that they are IMPOSSIBLE to reach by phone! I've been to the Institute in Columbus, Ohio and loved every haircut I've gotten there, so I decided to finally try the one here. The first time I called them I was put on hold for about 15 minutes before finally being able to speak to someone. I was delighted that they had an appointment w/i 2 weeks, as I had heard that it was difficult to get an appointment there. It was nice b/c they input what times you are available into the computer system so you only have to tell them once. On the day of the appointment I left in plenty of time only to get caught on a stalled train for 20 min. (The Institute is located on the same block as the Spring St stop off the C,E.) I ended up arriving 5 min late for my 7:15 appt only to be told that one of their instructors had called in sick that day and was not available to oversee students. A PHONE CALL WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE!!!! Doesn't common courtesy dictate that a salon (even more so if it's a schoo!) call to cancel an appt?! The receptionist mentioned that if I had only been on time they would have had to take me, but since I was "late," I would have to reschedule! No amount of pleading/blaming the train would change her mind. I was so irate that even a free haircut coupon did not appease me. And to top it off they were unable to reschedule me for another 2 weeks!! Attempt #2 -- The day of rescheduled appt I tried to call them to see if they had any cancellations earlier in the day. After waiting HALF AN HOUR on hold, I finally hung up in frustration and just waited until my 7:15 appt, making sure to show up early. Does anyone even pick up the phone there?! I'm not so certain... 5 stars for my haircut though!! I must have lucked out, b/c my stylist was graduating the next day (woohoo, karma!!) and she gave me exactly what I asked for. It looked amazing -- I even got two "hey baby's" on the way home!! Yes, it took 90 minutes, but it was well worth it. I had a lovely experience at Aveda institute last week. I went in for a long overdue trim and Pascal did a great job. He listened, he was meticulous and he made sure I got what I wanted. He showed me some products but was not pushy about it. I liked the rapport with the instructor. She clearly trusted him yet she was there throughout for support and guidance. I went into this beauty school with high hopes. I was willing to take the risk and have highlights and a cut. It sounded like a great deal. But it turned out badly for me. The person I was assigned to took forever! I literally was there from 9:30-4:30pm on a Saturday. I asked for highlights and lowlights and she did both.. but she kept asking me what I wanted and all of these techincal questions about various options but I had no idea since I'm not a beautician. I have random horrible white looking blonde streaks throughout my hair and I feel like a skunk. I'm not 20 years old and that's not in style anymore. My cut was worse. I had nearly shoulder length hair when I went in and now it's higher than chin length. WHile my student admitted she was afraid to cut anything because she didn't know what she was doing, four of her instructors weighed in on it and one of them ended up cutting it myself. I hate it. I look like I have a bowl on my head. I'm on my way to go and get it cut by a professional to make up for the bad haircut- so in the end I've learned my lesson the hard way. You get what you pay for. Made an appointment for full highlights at this salon. I was asked if I've had highlights before when making the appointment and said yes. I go in this morning and was told by the manager that the students would not be able to manage the color I wanted. Which is all good and I truly appreciate the honestly, but didn't appreciate having my time wasted by going in. The capabilities of what the students can provide should be explained well ahead of time. The salon is a mediocre training studio and people should ask loads of questions before booking an appointment and wasting time. read more

I've been to the one in Los Angeles and I've always left a happy customer. The students were nice and very attentive. They tried to give you exactly what they wanted. Since I moved to NY and they have an Aveda Institute, I figure, why give up something that's good? So I made an appointment and went in. I hate my haircut. My stylist barely listened to a word I said. I asked for layers, and the back of my hair looks like a little kid took scissors cut straight across. I asked for the shortest part of my "bangs" to hit my lips, and now it barely touches my nose. I usually don't mind the 3 hr ordeal, because I leave happy. I'm not happy right now. I might call tomorrow and ask for a re-do. Somehow I need to find another 3 hrs to get a haircut. read more

Though the students were friendly and nice, the haircut was horrible. I said a trim, she took off 3 inches. I said to fix my bangs so they wouldnt part awkwardly and she chopped the bangs off. I thought we had an understanding of how I wanted my haircut but she had something different in her head. When I opened my eyes, my bangs were gone. oh no ;_; I would have rather had rude chinese people cut my hair than have nice people do a horrible cut. be careful with who you get and what you find to be nice. because the other students and teacher thought the haircut was nice but I completely hate it. When I first moved to NYC, I was excited to chance upon the Aveda Institute. Their $45 facials are such a steal. However, there is no atmosphere here. You get your facial done on a spa bed in an area separated by curtains. As such you can hear conversations next door going on in your little enclosed area. No problemo... Before you start your facial, the esthetician will ask you to choose the an oil of the 3 that you prefer... I always go for the tangerine scent. Frankly I'm not a huge fan of scented oils but that tangerine scent takes my breath away (at time I do the eucalyptus too). Then the facial begins. Overall a decent facial with Aveda products. Thing is as these are students (about to graduate from the Institute) and this place offers them real-life experience prior to starting their official career. Some things to note here: 1) They offer a good basic facial, however if you are looking for extraction, these students may not be experts in this and may not necessarily do a clean thorough job for you. Once, a student mistook my tiny mole to be a clogged pore and proceeded to "extract" that, leaving me slightly scarred. Ouch. 2) Since the students are not necessarily professionals, at times they will bring in their instructor for a second opinion. So it becomes a tedious process if you are one who just likes to relax and put yourself in the trust of your esthetician instead of engaging in interactive conversations 3) You ALWAYS have to fill up a form prior to the start of your appointment. Erm, store the info in a database so it can be pulled up automatically in future perhaps? OK maybe the cost of maintaining the d-base may not justify this but I'm sure there has to be some sort of ROI and profit for Aveda despite the low prices. Nevertheless, most students aim to please and they try to give you an overall pleasant experience. I think they may be judged too. They try very hard. However, I've since left for greener pastures. Although the $45 price is tempting... I'm one who really is all about the extraction process... and I managed to find a good package with Lia Schorr for a fabulous facial with superb extraction for a mere $65. Decided to treat myself for a much needed facial and haircut at the Aveda school. I have been visiting the school for a few years now and have never had a bad experience. Understanding that some of the services take longer than normal since they are performed by students, I made sure to a lot plenty of time to get both services. Not to mention the prices are pretty great and they use all the Aveda products My facial was the "express" selection so I could also squeeze in the haircut. Erin was my facial technician and made suggestions for my sensitive skin. She made the experience very relaxing and I will for sure be back for a longer session. If you book a facial, ask for Erin. After the facial I headed to the salon to get a cut from Genevieve. I was going in for a basic trim and shape up so I was very open to any ideas she had. After the cut and curly blow out, I was very pleased. She did great job. I'm excited to wear my hair down for a change. After the cut, took a trip to the retail store to make my purchases and to make sure that both Erin and Genevieve got the credit for the purchases I made. Aveda Products are great for my sensitive skin and smell wonderful too. I'll definitely be back soon. read more

I've been to Aveda Institutes in 4 different cities and have yet to have a bad experience. I play a model customer and ask for a trim. Students get a good practice, and I keep my hair healthy and wallet happy. Win, win, win! $20 for Level 1 student and $30 for Level 2 student. A simple hair cut can take about an hour with the student taking his/her time and the instructor checking on you 2-3 times. The first Saturday appt available was 2 weeks out-- I booked it over the phone easy enough. Can't wait to try their facial! read more

It seems like every time I go to the Aveda Institute to get my hair cut, I end up thinking, "this is why I don't go here." Okay, you might get a really good stylist here like 25% of the time. It's kind of a gamble if you're picky about your hair. I've gotten stylists here that: didn't care and didn't want to be there were afraid to actually use a pair of scissors and cut love to give asymmetrical bangs Not to mention that if you plan on getting your hair cut here, you better have 2-3 hours to commit. At the same time, I have walked out with some great cuts. Not to mention it's like $20 which, if you're poor like me, WORKS. Oh Aveda. read more

I know some people are a little hesitant about getting a haircut from a student, but I'm all about it. I love the idea of supporting someone else's education, and also of cheap services, because let's be real, there are a lot of other things that I want to spend my paycheck on. So far I've been here twice, and I've had slightly different experiences, but both overall positive for both me and my credit card. The biggest downsides are that it takes a while, and that unlike a professional salon, the ambiance is not all fancy and luxurious...much more industrial and to-the-point. The first time I came here, it was a Monday evening (which I was told is when all the most experienced students are there) and I had a great time! My stylist was super friendly and did exactly what I wanted her to do. The second time, I had to guide my stylist a little more, and she seemed a little more confused, but my hair still came out looking just fine...I just had to ask for what I wanted very clearly. So the moral of that story is, really don't be afraid to tell your stylist exactly what you're looking for, and if something isn't right (like she made my bangs way too thin at first), tell them! Do be warned, it will take a LONG time. Both times I was there for around 2 hours for just a basic cut. It can be frustrating, but if you're prepared for it, it's not quite so bad. And bring cash to tip your stylist! You can pay for the cut via card, but if you want to leave a tip (and you should!), you need to have cash on-hand to give to your stylist directly. Overall, I will definitely be coming back here for most of my haircuts. I have a pretty simple haircut (long hair, just trim off the split ends), so I can't say if they'd be good at making a drastic change. If I was trying to do something elaborate or make a big change, I might hesitate a bit more, but at least for your average trim, it's totally worth it! read more

This is a review for skincare services. I have been trying to go to the Aveda Institute for a while, but I'm a bit too 'on a whim' for this place. You definitely need an appointment here, as it's always very full. I finally got a slot for a one hour facial before heading on a vacation. I'd been hoping to book the 140 min package, but like I said it's really full most of the time, so I was happy to get the hour slot. Receptionist was pleasant, but wouldn't budge on me trying to add an extra service (had to try!). Filled out a very brief bit of paperwork (I acknowledge the service is provided by students). Waited in the sitting area. I was about 20 min early, and my student collected me 5-10 min before my scheduled appt time. Carla, my trainee, was very sweet. Asked plenty of questions in the beginning, so I had adequate opportunity to describe any issues or concerns. For instance, I'm not a fan of tea tree oil or other 'stinging' products on my skin. I know they're 'natural' but they're still irritants, and I'd prefer to avoid. The room was curtained off, dark, calming, with nice spa music and, of course, the lovely Aveda smells. After a cleansing and aromatherapy 'journey' the instructor was called in to ask additional questions. Bonnie (or Betty?) was also very attentive and thorough and seemed to be listening an engaging with Carla, as opposed to hurrying her through anything. Carla successfully relayed all the info we'd discussed earlier. They offered me two different treatment options and one was an 'upgrade' of $12. I took the upgrade, bringing the cost of a one hour+ facial to a whopping $52! Awesome. Carla offered light chatting in the beginning half of the facial, but after the consultation, she knew I was there primarily for relaxation purposes, and did the remainder of the treatment in silence. I don't usually expect more than a soothing experience from a facial, but I have to say the end result left my skin looking great. Hydrated, non-irritated, with tight pores and a rosy glow. Cashier on the way out was 'eh'. Adequate but not 'warm and fuzzy'. It was the end of the day so understandable, but I was feeling so nice, I wouldn't have minded a brief smile. Overall, it was absolutely lovely and I'll be back. Of course, it's not a 5 star high-end spa experience, but if you manage your expectations correctly, you can get a pretty incredible service while saving a major chunk of change. I tipped heavily and got the upgrade and still walked out of there only 74 bucks lighter. Win! read more

My five star rating is for the students. The front desk doesn't even deserve the mandatory one star yelp requires. They are unprofessional, off putting and can be quite rude. It's a bit amusing since they're supposed to be the professionals and the students are supposed to be, well, students. The students absolutely do their best to make sure you have a great experience. If you're trying to go platinum blonde, this might not be the best place. But for simple things they take their time and do a great job. read more

Booked a haircut about a month in advance. With any of these institutes, it's very hit or miss but I usually arrive trying to channel positive energy in an attempt to draw a good student towards me. By luck of the draw, I got a male student (I was his last customer of the day) and he spent nearly 2 hours on my hair. My thick tresses always seem to surprise everyone during the shampoo and wash, and it usually is such an ordeal to sit through the entire blow dry. He seemed annoyed at my hair during the blow dry since all of his fellow students were cleaning and packing up for the night. Overall I think he went too short and choppy (I went to dinner afterwards wondering where my hair went). This seems to be the case often so now when I'd like 4 inches off, I only ask for 2.5 and I never ask for layers (only angles -- lots of people learning to cut hair usually think long layers means lots of layers and I end up losing a ton of length). Would probably not come back because it is a 2.5 hour ordeal, hard to get an appointment, and I am interested in trying other spots in the city where I may get a better cut for around the same price (paid about $32 after tip). read more

Really really affordable. I didn't get the exact cut that I asked for but I understand that they are students! If you're really picky about your hair then I wouldn't recommend because the individuals cutting are still learning but it's very professional and still nice. The products are great that they use and the atmosphere is nice. For a cut it was only $30. They only accept cash tips though! read more

Most of the other reviews on here are for hair services so I thought I'd review the other side of the place. I came here today for a facial after putting off getting one for years (I can't bring myself to spend $100-150). When I read about the prices here I thought it would be perfect-- $50 for a 90 minute facial? I'm happy to say that not only was it affordable, it was a great experience. Although you are treated by a student, they always consult with their instructor before making treatment decisions. My aesthetician was warm, friendly, and took good care of my skin. Although the extractions were not pleasant (they never are), the overall experience was very relaxing and calming. You get to have your face treated with lovely Aveda products and the price can't be beat. My main word of caution is that because this is a school, you're not exactly in some luxurious private room; instead, you're in a curtained off area so you can hear people walking around and the students talking to their instructors. However, it's not that distracting and they play nice music. This was fine for me because I wasn't expecting a full on luxe experience-- I was more interested in just getting the treatment. So if you want to have a cushy bathrobe to wear and free glasses of wine in addition to your facial, go to Bliss and spend $150. Bit if you're in need of a facial and don't want to shell out for a fancy spa experience, I'd highly recommend Aveda Institute. P.S. I was able to get an appointment on a Saturday by calling on a Friday-- so I think the skin services are easier to get appointments for than the hair services. read more

So i've now been to the Aveda Institute three times, and have very mixed feelings. I'm giving 2 stars as I'm writing this review very frustrated from just arriving home from my most recent experience, and feel as though my hair is a teflon pad. The second time I visited Aveda was exactly 2 weeks ago, and I went to see Lily. She was super sweet, and while she did a fabulous job with my color, she didn't really get my roots, so I had growout upon leaving, and horrible roots the next week - and after a brazilian blowout (which i despise, but thats an entirely different story) completely eliminating my lowlights Lily had put in (along with sun starting the process), I had platinum hair again with hard core roots, so scheduled an appointment less than two weeks after my last. I brought in the formula that Lily wrote down, as it seemed pretty simple to just replicate what she had done. I got a guy this time (as he was nice, i dont want to name him), and after he was done informing me of how absolutely awful brazilians are (yes, i hate mine, dont need convincing), i asked him if he could get some color by my ears, as everyone seems to miss that area, leaving roots that are never touched up. He said that he couldnt, and that I'll always have roots with highlights...hmm, no, while my last experience at the school left me with roots, my time prior didnt, nor have many other salons (while yes, many have), and obviously its more difficult to get close to the hairline, but he didnt even care to try. This led me to believe that i'd likely have roots when i left, and sure enough, my roots look pretty much the same as when i walked in. I also told him I didnt want my hair blown straight, but with body (which is VERY difficult with the brazilian blowout result), but he took it to an extreme, basically curling it, ratting it, and spraying all sorts of stuff in it, so it felt yes, like a teflon pad, when i touched it. Two of the three students i've had have followed the required routine of dragging you to the product area, and throwing as many products they feel you "need" as possible...to which I always feel like a cheap f*$% not buying a single one. I also hadn't planned to tip this time after being informed that they don't allow tips (yet the student kept it, obviously), but as the guy in front of me tipped, despite hating my hair, I again tipped. And also felt guilted into buying at least one hair product I didnt need (especially given how atrocious my hair was with said products in it). Reason I'm giving it a legit 2 stars is that when the instructor asked me how I liked my hair, I said (in an attempt not to blame him entirely), that I still have roots, but that seems to often be the case. She said that they look pretty far in there (ie that i dont have roots). Hm, my boyfriend just now at home measured how far my roots extend with his own fingernails, informing me that they were the distance between "this nail" and "this nail." If measurable, nonetheless in such a manner, i think its safe to say i have roots. Great that its cheap there ($68 with my product), but crappy that I still have roots, so basically paid for nothing, again. read more

TWENTY DOLLAR HAIRCUT. i've had my hair cut maybe... ten times in my life [i'm 19] and this is probably, like, in the top two. the girl who cut my hair is supposed to graduate in march, though, so she's like a month away from being done. but still! i guess i can see how this can be hit or miss, but to me, it was great. the instructor came over when the girl was done to look over her work, and she only had to snip twice, so it was pretty flawless. and it's a TWENTY DOLLAR HAIRCUT in nyc. do want. read more
