I've been in twice recently, once for a haircut and the other time for global color. I've been totally disappointed each time. At my color appointment, I had a consultation and the stylist and I chose a color and agreed on a swatch from a book: it was a medium brown. I left with my hair black. Like, bluish black. The stylist didn't say anything when she dried it but I could tell that she felt uncomfortable. When the instructor came by to check after the procedure, she never asked if it went well or I had questions or was happy. She just told the stylist she had dyed my hair properly and ran off. While I know you pay less here, it's still $50 just for color, so to get something wildly different than what you ask for is inexcusable, and the teachers should be guiding the students. The washing station didn't have consistent water so it was scorching hot or ice cold. My stylist left shampoo in my hair after my treatment. When she noticed she asked if I wanted it washed out or just to leave it. Um, yes, I wanted all the shampoo out of my hair. I go to the Oliver Finnley school all the time and that's where I'll continue to go from here forward. read more

I gave up going because trying to get an appointment was nearly impossible. The online scheduling did not work and no one would ever return a phone call. Very discouraging. Perhaps things have improved since I quit going, but my guess is that I doubt it. My Service was always with aesthetician and she was superb until she left. Truly had a great experience here! I needed a last minute trim that didn't break the bank and Aveda Institute Boise hit the mark- in fact, they exceeded it. I have only ever gone to Aveda salons as I love their products and what they stand for, but they can be quite pricey. My stylist- Jala- was so thorough; she checked in with me regularly throughout the cut to make sure the amount she was trimming was what I wanted, explained the products she was using on me, and asked how I'd like my hair styled. She did an amazing job, and it was such a sweet feeling walking out of there and hearing her get hyped up by all her friends, classmates, and instructors. My hair was silky smooth and I received many compliments on it after. I will definitely return- for both products and another cut! Note- haircuts are $15 and tips are not taken via credit card, so bring cash :) read more

I love the Aveda Institute in Boise. I have gone for many years with my sister and my Mom And daughter-in-law's we love the pedicures and manicures. yesterday we went and had a spa pedicures and manicures. It was so relaxing so fun and absolutely one of the best pedicures and manicures I have ever had. Tiffany was amazing so thorough and had such an eye for detail and was and very fun to visit with. A few years ago, I used to go to higher and salons to get manicures and pedicures and always felt like I was rushed in and out, and my nails never looked as good as they do from Aveda. I highly recommend anybody who loves a relaxing and great manicure or pedicure go to Aveda. Overall, I think my experience was really good. My stylist did a fantastic job. Only slight issue is it was not fully the color I wanted, but a few shades darker. No big deal. The highlights are beautifully blended and she honestly matched it to my natural color amazingly...which wasn't what I'd asked for. I did want my highlights touched up, the color I've been at--medium golden blond with no red tones (my hair has a lot of red and pulls red immediately). The color ended up matching more of my darker blond hair with red tones but it looks really pretty and will grow out great. Not exactly what I'd expected but I'm definitely more pleased this morning in looking at it. I will note that every issue I heard her speak about with unhappy clients, and the girl next to me that was sobbing over her hair, the issues were all on color being wrong, and all red or orange. Not sure if the plant based bleach they use doesn't lighten past red well or the color blending techniques taught are in need of work, but thankfully mine turned out great. I would definitely recommend it for a cut or trim, nails or facials. If you're hesitant about getting hair color, I totally get that but there's lots of other things they do! read more

I was just tired of my mustache. So I went the Aveda Institute, I knew they could help me. Indigo stayed home (with supervision of course!) I've been to the Aveda Institute a few times. Usually for a trim but lately for waxing. Their prices are very affordable and I've had good experiences here. The students really listen when you tell them concerns or specific things about your skin or hair. The instructors always check the provided services to make sure they were done correctly and to ensure the customer is happy! The room was a little cramped but that's not the students fault. The waxing was excellent, my mustache was completely gone! You couldn't find a single mustache hair on my face! I was very pleased. I highly recommend this place for affordable waxing and hair trims as well. Things to consider: 1. No kids allowed which is basically like all spas (totally understandable considering hot wax, hot curling irons, etc) 2. At the end of services they will recommend products to buy or try. We booked an appointment for my mother and I today for 2 all over colors and cuts. Mine was quoted at $30 for the color and $6 for the cut. We ended up having to mix another bowl so that was an additional $10 (which was expected). My stylist did very well until the end when the color would not come off my scalp. It was a horrendous blood red. While at the salon, I realized that the stylist had also gotten coloring all over my shirt and face. The instructor wiped my face and neck and used hair spray on my shirt to attempt to get the stain out. She said that if it didn't come out, to come back. That'd be great but I live in Florida... After I got home, there was still a bunch of color around my ears and neck. As for my mother, her color came out beautifully... After nearly 6 hours for an all over highlight. They quoted her $45 and ended up having to use 4 extra bowls totaling $40 extra dollars which was not explained to her during the process. When we called for the appointment, we asked for 2 cuts. But the end, the stylist was running out of time and said she didn't have time for a cut, but if we came back, she would honor the $6 price. We did not want to come back and had explained that we had an appointment at 4 at another place. We ended up leaving at 4:35, missing our appointment completely. During checkout, my mother was shell shocked at the price, coming to nearly $97 after being quoted $45. Mine was near the price expected and I added shampoo and conditioner. I asked for them to discount my bill because they ruined my shirt. They gave me about $10 off for my $30 shirt. When I got home, I looked in the mirror and realized I still had a bunch of color still left on my skin, I can't believe the instructor let me leave like that! I was disappointed in the way they handled our situation and will not go back nor would I recommend it to a friend. read more

I went in to have a facial. To my surprise I didn't feel like I was in a school at all. The room set up was a relaxing spa environment. The service I received was amazing. The student was very in tune with my skin care needs and what I was looking for. I felt as if I should have paid 80. However it was well work the small fee of 20. I know this is a school and customers are their 'practice clients' however, if you request a 'seasoned student', which I have done in the past and been quite satisfied, this would have been a better review. I called to schedule a facial and asked for a '3 month in training student'...they said 'no problem - we can do that'. Well they didn't do that as I was a 'first time client' for my therapist and I could tell! She was nice enough but needed a lot more practice. And their facials are not truly a facial but more of an attempt to relax you in a dark room using some oils and a masque, no steam however there was a machine for that in the room. I wouldn't suggest going here for a facial if you are used to a 'true facial'. I may go back for a pedicure as I love Aveda products but only if they can assure me of getting a 3rd month student. read more

I came here because the Paul Mitchell school had two stars and Aveda had 4 stars, therefore it was a no brainer. I was so mistaken, reception was friendly and decent for the most part. The student I got was beyond friendly and gave you a very warm feeling, HOWEVER, I came in wanting a specific shade of grey and I had confidence that it would either be at least grey or somewhere near the color I wanted. The end result was a charcoal grey which I was willing to be okay with however there was also an almost brownish pink blotch in the front of my hair as well as the back and sides. I was left with a section of orange/yellow hair on my sideburns. I don't know how exactly you can mess up grey toner but low and behold it happened. The color I have is no where near the shade of grey that I showed both the INSTRUCTOR and STUDENT. I'm honestly appalled that the instructor actually liked the color and thought that it looked good. I also received a haircut and it was below par to say the least. Looks like I'm just going to have to go black now. I don't know how well they do the coloring job on woman but me being a guy I expected it to not be a problem but it was the worst experience I've ever had and the entire time I was telling myself I should've just payed for an actual professional coloring and cut, but you live and learn and this will definitely stick with me for a while that you get what you pay for read more

Last Monday I went in to have blue highlights put in my hair. They looked blonde when the girl was done, but she and her instructor both insisted it would look blue after a couple days and a couple hair washes. On Wednesday, it looked a very unnatural blonde color and no blue in sight. Then my husband noticed that my hair was thinning in some of the places where the highlights had been done. He said it had been thick and normal up until that point. I was very upset, and called to talk to someone at the Institute about getting my money back so I could get it repaired elsewhere. The girl that answered the phone put me on hold to talk to her supervisor/instructor and then came back on and said the supervisor would call me back in a few minutes. I waited two days and no one called me back. The same day I had my hair done, I also had my nails done. When it was finished, it looked like a child had painted them, and it all chipped off in just a couple days. I would be very wary about going to a place with untrained students. They ruined my hair and basically stole my money. read more
