Wow, I've been going to this place for years. It's extremely difficult to find parking. They treat you so poorly when it comes to the problem of parking. They know it's a problem. The day I went for an appointment half the metered parking in front of their establishment was "No Parking" mandated by the city. Instead of working with a client of many years, they insisted "15 minutes" or the appointment is cancelled and you are charged. This is so inhuman. They are based out of another state and are unwilling to accommodate clients when there are exigent circumstances, like the city taking parking away, making it even more difficult to park. I'm done struggling to find parking and being met with a lack of compassion or flexibility. It's not worth it. If you're okay with inflexible rules, lack of compassion and a refusal to respect you as an years-long client, this is your place. read more

Kylie was amazing I was able to book an appointment the day before. I wanted long layers, more volume, face framing bangs, and add tinsel. She understood the assignment. I also received a wash, the best scalp massage I've ever had, and a blow out. Looove the atmosphere here--cool and modern and in a great location. The shampoo room and scalp massage is almost worth the price alone, as it is so relaxing with calm music and dim lights. Had a great haircut experience here, and stylists all seemed knowledgeable and up-to-date on current trends. She helped talk me through the process of transitioning from heavily blonde color treated hair to grow into my natural gray without it damaging my hair in the process. I've been in n Boise to support my Mom while my Dad is hospitalized for COVID. I had some serious grow out (3mos) and needed a cut and color touch up. I did extensive research to find a salon and stylist whom I thought wouldn't F up my hair. I wear a medium length pixie cut, and while shirt hair may seem easy, it's not! I called the salon and booked w Jenny. I cannot say how lovely and talented she is. I have had few stylists in my life, and was nervous that my hair would be terrible. After explaining what I wanted, Jenny set to work coloring my hair and taking the time to look at photos to use as reference for the cut I wanted. I am so very happy with the result! The color is bomb, and my cut is exactly what I was looking for. If you're looking for a talented, kind stylist who can create what you want, look her up! Overall they do a pretty good job, but they seem to have a constant stylist turnover; I've had 3 "regular" stylist in the last year as they keep leaving. Also, in general their pricing is pretty high and they constantly push add ons each appt. But I think my biggest issue is every time I try to style an updo either I'm unhappy with the result or the stylist cancels indicating they don't feel comfortable with specific updo types. read more

Started out great. Saw Addison for two months and then she left. Then saw Elizabeth for about 8 months. For the most part she got my color right (one time had hot roots) and her cut was great. I really liked her and her prices were reasonable. Then she left. I then saw Emily and I was very unhappy. I showed pix of what I wanted, brunette (my current color) with caramel and cinnamon highlights, like a traditional highlight, not balayage. What I got was orangish color over most of my hair. I complained and management was extremely accommodating and re/did my hair for free a few days later. I now saw Mackenzie. Showed her pix and while she made the orange hair better, I didn't get the color & highlights I wanted. I found out the stylists have different level pricing based on either their exp and/or how long they've been at this salon. Needless to say Mackenzie was more than Liz and Emily. On my 2nd appt with Mackenzie, we discussed my concerns & looked at pictures. My hair turned out better than the last two sessions but not quite what I wanted. Before I said anything, Mackenzie said she didn't think she was the one for me, this was the best she could do, she couldn't do what I wanted. I was a bit stunned, but went with it and took her recommendation to see Alana at Hue Salon, also in downtown. Alana is an ambassador with Kerastaste products and suppose to be expert in the colors I would like to achieve. We'll see! See the four pix I posted to see my hair the last 3 months. I was at the juice place next door when I noticed Lunatic Fringe salon. The best salon experience I've ever had, I'm a client for life! Jenny is my stylist and she's bananas good! But I can honestly say that you'll be in great hands with all of the stylists at Lunatic Fringe. They are passionate about continuing to educate their stylists, and the display of teamwork is so inspiring. While I'm in the chair, several of the newer stylists will consult with Jenny and the other senior/more experienced stylists to make sure that they are making the best decisions for their guest's hair and I am always so impressed with how they all help each other out. Not to mention, being offered snacks, drinks, and an incredible scalp massage makes me feel totally pampered the whole time. The energy in there is such great vibes! Lastly, I constantly get stopped in public by people asking who does my hair. Yes, she's that good. She's a blonde expert for sure, and can always take my crazy ideas and make them look amazing. Now hear this: It is just worth it to experience their shampoo room - entirely different vibe than their cut/color/style main room. There are 3 receptionists at the front (no need to wait) - who were all so charming and super genuinely friendly. I appreciate that they use very specific, internationally acclaimed albeit rare hair products but then serve local beverages to ensure we support the local community. I will be coming back for sure. I had been going to Lunatic for the past 2 years. My experience was good and the staff was very friendly and I enjoyed the atmosphere. My last experience was not good and they've lost what was a happy customer. I was Running late and I called them to let them know I was running late. I had never been late in the past and so this was unlike me. They let me know It was fine and they would see me soon. Right before I entered the door, they called me again to tell me that I was 20 minutes late and that I would be charged a " no show fee" and that the stylist could no longer see me. I understood as they have other appointments. When I got home, they had charged me $70 for being 20 minutes late and I didn't get my haircut. Everyone is human but what a joke. read more

My friends and I made appointments to get our hair styled for a wedding. Being from out of town, we crossed our fingers and hoped that the experience would be a positive one. I have to say, we were all blown away (no pun intended - or is it??). While I love the salon I've been going to for years, they could take some lessons from this place. Lunatic Fringe has apparently just moved into a new location 2 doors down from the old one. I don't know what the old location was like, but this one is beautiful, as well as extremely thoughtfully appointed. I loved the little touches, such as putting my purse in a clear plastic pouch to protect it from any product spillovers, and the dimly-lit hair washing room with padded neck rests. I believe my stylist's name was Sydney, and she was personable, professional and very talented. In fact, all 3 of us who went last Saturday came out with exactly what we wanted. Thanks so much, Lunatic Fringe. I hope to return to Boise one day in the not-too-distant future and if I do, you will definitely be a stop during my stay! read more

I don't usually write reviews...I'm really happy to the people who write them, but something has to be very exceptional one way or another for me to feel the need to review it. Unfortunately, this is not one of the exceptionally good experiences. It is quite the opposite, and I don't like to trash people or their businesses, but this experience was so horrific I really feel it's important to share it. I'm going to make this as short as possible, because it has a lot of components. A little under six months ago, I went to Lunatic Fringe as a returning customer. I wanted a really subtle undercut that would not be noticeable when my just past shoulder length was down. My stylist said sure, no problem, and we agreed not to cut past my occipital bone. Except she did not cut. She immediately used clippers on a shave setting, and she cut a triangle shape to the top of my head, literally leaving me with almost no hair in the back, and the few pieces that hung were 4-5 inches shorter than the rest of it. There's not a lot you can do once you shave someone's head, but she didn't admit she'd made a mistake, and I had to come back in for consultations with other stylists, who were so horrified and said there wasn't even a way to cut it short and make it work, and they asked me to come back in with the owner. So I came back again. The salon owner said it wasn't that bad and "it's just hair." If it was just hair, then how are they able to repeatedly charge hundreds of dollar for its care? They refunded my money, apologized, and agreed to pay for extensions when my hair was long enough to have them. I decided to try to make peace with this, and I probably would have except for how it's been handled since. I told them I was moving to Seattle for a doctoral program in September and they assured me it would be long enough by then, which of course, it wasn't. There was no offer to pay for the extensions with another stylist in the new city I would be living in. I was expected to pay for a plane ticket and fly back in November when it was long enough. And I was willing to do it, but long story short, the salon owner blew off my phone call and never returned it last month, as did the stylist doing the extensions, who told me to directly message him on Facebook as my hair got longer. So on top of the most self-conscious and ugly I've ever felt (honestly, it has taken a blow out and twenty minutes plus arranging with Bobbi pins to make it look like a crappy ponytail where I'm not balding), the salon has handled their mistake in the most unprofessional, degrading way possible. And so as out of next week, I'm out $400 for extensions, plus all the cost of care of them for the next year, just so I don't look like I am balding. As the stylist who will be doing my extensions in Seattle said, "this is one of the most negligent things I've ever seen a stylist do. I can't believe this." I've been coloring and cutting my hair for over 13 years and I'm happy to pay for great service. Part of that is to ensure something like having my head shaved doesn't happen. And in the unlikely event that it does, I would have really hoped to have not been treated like an annoyance. Honestly the most stressful, disappointing, and humiliating experiences I've ever had with hair stylists. And as an added bonus I haven't felt pretty or had any confidece in my looks for a half a year...there's more than the surface I know, but honestly, this one has been tough. Mistakes are going to happen, I know. Sometimes big ones. But integrity is how you own them, and Lunatic Fringe showed none. read more

Yesterday I went in to Lunatic Fringe hoping to get a great haircut. I've been to several salons in West Boise and Eagle without getting much satisfaction. Lunatic Fringe got great reviews so I decided to go downtown. I was met with a friendly greeting at the front desk and was introduced, almost immediately, to my stylist Alana. She took about 5-10 minutes to understand my goals and to talk me through several options. From there I went back to the "lather room" to get shampooed. (I also got a scalp massage and hot towel). After that, Alana took me back out and spent about 40 mins getting my cut just right. I thought that I would end up paying quite a bit but was really surprised when the price was exactly what I had paid at the other salons. I was really impressed! I just wish I had gone to Lunatic Fringe from the very first. If you plan to go there I would recommend Alana. She was fantastic! read more

I showed up to lunatic salon with banana roots and little hope. I have been maintaining my own bleached hair for about a year, usually covering up the inconsistencies with a bright color. However this time I had to keep my hair blonde for a wedding the following weekend, and my bleach job had NOT cut it. When I arrived at the salon, Kinsley greeted me sweetly and without judgement about the catastrophe that was happening on my head. She touched up my roots and softened a glowing golden band that had been in my hair for months. She toned to perfection and I left feeling like the ice queen my heart knows I am. She was also so careful to check in with me and make sure my scalp wasn't in pain (it wasn't at all) and was very careful to avoid hot spots from my hack job. Lunatic Fringe was the first salon I ever visited when I moved to Boise almost 4 years ago. I was nervous to go somewhere new and my hair was in a bit of bad shape after having just gone through beauty school myself and using my own hair as an experiment more than once. I spoke to Levi when I called to schedule and he was so accommodating - he got me an appointment the next weekend with Jessica. I was greeted promptly and spent only a few minutes waiting in the attractive waiting area before I was welcomed to the back by my stylist. Jessica was awesome and we connected pretty quickly over our love of music which was exciting for me. She took great care with my hair, and even gave me some advice as an experienced stylist to someone new to the industry AND to town. I left feeling beautiful, warm, and welcomed. I went on to frequent Lunatic Fringe for a while, before beginning work as a stylist myself at a different salon. Since then, I've watched some of my friends and peers go to work for Lunatic Fringe and blossom as stylists. You can rest assured you'll be taken care of in a truly stunning environment, by a professional and caring staff, who have been trained in the very latest and best techniques and products. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5, is because *I* don't work there, and I've got to keep one of this stars for myself. read more

I am writing this review for my wife. She was advised to see a certain hairstylist from a friend. My wife went in for a free consultation so the stylist and she can go over what she was looking for. My wife opted for the deep conditioning which was an additional $40 dollars to the cut and color. After the session was finished, the color was no where what she wanted and she was presented with a bill that was $80 dollars more than she was originally quoted. After trying to work with the stylist herself, we figured we would call the corporate office to see if we could discuss the matter as there was something that could be done to correct the matter like fixing the problems with her hair. We were okay with the extra amount if the coloring was done correctly. To no avail and much what we expected the corporate office said they would make it right and reach out to the owners. We should have gone with our instincts and supported local and not a corporate entity. I tried to upload the receipt here, but am unable to do so.
