I love being outdoors but unfortunately most of my friends don't and I never thought of going out on my own with a bunch of strangers until I came across a Groupon for DBA. I finally took the plunge and signed up and it was the best thing I ever did. Since March, I have gone on 4 more hikes and each one of them has been totally amazing experience. All the credit goes to Dave and his crew- they are excellent and the hikes are well planned. You don't have to worry about much because they do most of the work for you. Dave is an awesome guide and highly experienced. He is also extremely knowledgeable and his adventure stories keep us all entertained and laughing throughout the hikes. He is very passionate about what he does- it's just not a business for him and it clearly shows. This is something that I feel makes DBA unique and stand out amongst other similar companies. I attempted a tough hike and just when I thought I could not go any further, Dave and his crew continued to encourage me and it was a great feeling when I finally made it to the top and saw the amazing view. Along the way, I have also met some great people and feel like now I am a part of a community of lovely people that enjoy being outdoors. I'm no longer apprehensive of going on hikes, sans "friends", because Dave makes you feel like you are hiking with a good friend. I have learned so much from the hikes and from Dave and I would highly recommend DBA to anyone. They not only offer day hikes but also overnight as well as holistic adventures. I am so grateful to have found them and look forward to many more hikes with Dave and the DBA crew!

They are great for day hikes to the Catskills or multi-day camping trips to the Andirondacks. If you can't have a car don't worry they will pick you up at designated spots in Brooklyn & Manhattan. Super cool guides with tons of knowledge about the environment. I just did a 5 day canoe portage camping trip in the St Regis lake area in the Andirondacks with them & it was awesome. Nothing like decompressing in nature.

We Out (Philipa) guided a 10 person group to Hudson Highlands State Park and summited Bull Hill…read morewith an elevation of 1,421 feet in Cold Spring NY. I don't know what kind of hiker I would consider myself as I regularly hike a few of the Delaware Gap Appalachian trails and recently completed Lemon Squeeze in NY. I know a good tour guide when I see one though. Philipa built a full experience for the group, from getting to the mountain (public transportation, GPS if driving), what to pack, how to dress, fitness level suggestions, snack/lunch suggestions and weather updates. Even though the weather for our trip would not qualify for a regular summer day in July I felt prepared and mentally I had a great attitude (which I contributed to the preparedness). At the mountain Philipa went through basic necessities (bathroom uses), pacing and safety precautions. She also gave us information about the mountain which is the only reason I know exactly where I hiked and how high I climbed. We stopped the amount of times the group needed to and she built connections to the mountain giving us some historical information. After the hike we stopped in town for some ice cream and snacks. Overall I feel as each activity would be different as each mountain/trail provides different experiences. But for review purposes what I want to leave you with is that Philipa will not lead the 1st timer astray, an expert will learn at least 1 new fact and she caters each experience to the area. You will not regret it!!! You will love your experience!

She is so genuinely excited to care for your dogs and provide the best enrichment possible: being outside in nature. Monika runs with the pups through the woods and plays a ton of games with them. Rudy is not only physically tired but mentally wiped out when he gets home. I've brought Rudy to other daycares, etc. before and he never reacts the way he does when he sees Monika. Once he is with her there's no looking back -- he jumps right in her car with her! Which is crazy since he's attached to me. I can count on one hand the number of people I'm comfortable leaving Rudy with and Monika is at the top of the list. She makes you and your pup feel like you're the only ones in the world, pays attention to detail for their care and truly loves them and plays with them. A lot of dog care centers turn into a money grab but I know Monika truly cares for and loves all of the dogs she has. I've never experienced a better care for my pup. She is the BEST!!

He had been emailing us prior to the set off day with clear instructions on things like luggage restrictions, an ideal clothing list & excursion itineraries. When we landed in Nevada, Nik had pre-rented a van that waiting for us to use for the rest of the week. Then he took us for lunch. This was one of three meals that was included in the cost of this Hines Tour. I cannot remember how many places we visited, but I do remember my favorite was Bryce Canyon. I know we also visited Zion National Park, Snow Canyon, Quail Creek Beach & Reservoir and Valley of Fire. We actually traveled to Utah, Arizona & Nevada on this one trip! Please don't be worried about the word MOTEL. Our accommodation was in a nice clean set of motels. They were all within close proximity to name brand food chains. So every evening after an exciting day trip out, Nik always planned one more trip to take whoever wanted to go for dinner on the strip. Or we could go our own way.. all walking distance from the motel. I ended up frequenting the DQ's spot!

I have been studying and photographing wildlife at Great Piece Meadows for nearly 10 years now…read more This semi-wild area is admittedly, a bit rugged and not for the faintest of heart. My typical approach is to walk stretches of "Ditch Road" which is accessed off of Clinton Street in Fairfield. Some sections of land off of Ditch Road are privately managed by the Fairfield Sportsmen Club and not open to the public, however you are free to walk all the way to nice natural views of the Passaic River. Bring your binoculars, hiking boots, phone w/ GPS, abundant drinking water and a sense of adventure. Enjoy. More info on the area here - http://wildlifepreserves.org/preserves/great-piece-meadows

If you don't go early in the spring or late in the fall, you will be eaten alive by insects. Also it will be completely overgrown and inaccessible. If you do go in the early spring or late fall, it will still be inaccessible, because its a freaking swamp. Expect to sink into the mud frequently and deeply. It's technically open to the public for hiking and fishing, but I get the very strong feeling the state doesn't actually want you there. There are no parking areas that I can find, no easy access (the only way I have found to access the area is parking on a dead-end street and a long walk on a road parallel to the highway past a private hunting preserve), and there are no trails aside from one footpath surrounding the lake. (Presumably made by those fishermen I have never seen) The first time I went there myself, I attracted the attention of a state trooper, who assumed I must have broken down or been kidnapped or something, as he had never seen anyone in those woods. Also, though I said it's untouched, I meant that there are no trails or official alterations to the land. This doesn't seem to stop anyone from using it as a communal landfill, however. There are sofas, old tires, various tetanus-inducing metal things, etc. I have never seen anyone else there, but it abuts against a private hunting preserve. . .and although the state land is technically off limits to hunters, I heard turkey calls that were definitely NOT coming from the private land. I would be very afraid to return, and possibly become a target for poachers. On the plus side, if you can avoid being shot, it is very isolated, and very serene.
