For those with extra pizza, I'd strongly recommend heating it up rather than eating it cold. I say that, even though I'm a big supporter of cold pizza. This pie needs to be warm.

We were looking for a place to have lunch in Miranda. After driving through town, there appeared to be only two choices. We decided on the Avenue Cafe. We were welcomed and invited to sit wherever we wanted. I prefer to sit inside rather than outside, so that's what we did. Photos (I assume by local artists) adorned the walls. The cafe seemed to be populated by both locals and tourists. My friend and I ordered the same thing: a Philly Cheesesteak with fries. It took a while for our food to arrive, but it was definitely worth the wait. The sandwich was outstanding. The cheese on top was not just melted, but browned perfectly as well. I hate burnt cheese, and I was happy to see no dark spots in the melty brown patches. The bread was also outstanding. My sandwich was not served on a plain roll, it looked like the bread was cut from from the end of a fresh French loaf. The bread was also toasted to make it warm and the outside crunchy, just how I like it. The fries were pretty good, but nothing compared to my sandwich. The next time I visit the Avenue of the Giants, I will dine here again. read more

April 14th 7:11 pm Sat at bar with friend. Waitress was in some distress. Very much in a "hurry" ordered a pizza and a sandwich 1 beer and 1 cider. Asked for water and she sighed and said yes hold on. Then asked for straws. Only to upset her again. When I went to pay the bill was over 70!! The pizza was itemized. They have the pie for cheaper on the menu. She could of used that price and added all extra on to bil for much much cheaper. Thanks rude waitress for no sale nor customer service experience. Other hand. The pizza was amazing and the sandwich was a perfect portion. Maybe the waitress could dress more appropriately too, green work out paints and a t shirt. We had breakfast at the cafe. We recently spent the weekend in Arcata and ate at 2 well recommended breakfast spots. The Avenue Cafe was the best of the 3. For us, the potatoes being a good amount grilled is a key. The eggs we cooked as ordered, which is not always the case. Service was very good. Prices were reasonable. Overall, I'd like to give it 4.5 stars since 5 should be reserved for something that is off the charts in some way. We soon realized that a cat was roaming the patio, looking for food, so we decided to eat inside, instead. It's a one man operation, with the owner fulfilling multiple roles. After we orders and paid, we got a pager to notify us once the order was ready. Everything is prepared fresh, so it took a bit of time. But because it was served hot, everything tasted good. I love a lot of toppings on my burger, so the self-serve topping bar was great...was able to put as much lettuce and pickles as I wanted. The 1/3 hamburger ($12.99) came with good fries . My wife got her plain cheeseburger 1/4 cheeseburger ($9.99) and enjoyed it. Her mom got chicken strips basket ($13.99), and upgraded her fries to be curly. We all shared each others fries, and the curly fries were really good. Drinks are cans. I didn't want to risk having a milk shake, but from all indications, it sounded good. We ate our meal at the counter. Afterwards, the owner suggested we walk across the parking lot to visit the Living Chimney Tree. It's free to enter, and is hollow enough for a person or two fit in. There are openings on both sides, so easy to take some nice pictures.
