You know how you've always had dentists where if someone asks for a recommendation you're like "I mean I have a dentist and they're fine I guess"? I can *actually* wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Vu and her staff entire staff. Everyone is friendly and remembers me personally. She does an incredible job and is the gentlest dentist I've ever had when it comes to scraping and cleaning. I never dread going in to see the dentist any more. She's explicitly told me I don't need work on something every other dentist has tried to sell me on, and let me know if it isn't causing issues there's no reason to do expensive work unless it starts to. I've had some pretty bad dentists in my past. I'm so so glad I found Avenue Dental. The receptionist is really nice and speaks good English. It makes every thing go pretty smoothly. They're getting really popular. If you call to make an appointment don't be surprised if it'll be in a month or 2. They're open Saturdays and that's when they're the busiest. I hate hate hate SF parking. Expect to park 3-5 blocks away from this place. Don't go for the meter, you're only screwing yourself over if you do that. The receptionists always asks where you parked. I think if you did park at a meter, they "might" help you add more coins during your visit - granted you provide the coins? They don't carry change. My waiting time is never too long, about 30 min. I love Dr. Vu. She's so nice and gentle. When she's washing my teeth she will make note of where you are sensitive and be very gentle with that area. If she sees my lips are chapped afterwards she puts a little vaseline on. She also talks to you - very nice conversation. Most important, they don't try to trick you or sell you stuff or mess up your teeth to get more money!! read more

Staff is friendly and have the patients interest, time, and comfort in mind. They set timers if you park on a meter spot, take X-rays really fast, and give you options on what you can do for any concerns you may have. I lost my retainers and they told me that regular retainers won't do but they can see if my insurance covers a special sort of retainers with a metal behind my teeth to realign my bottom teeth. I thought they were very honest...they told me my top teeth is fine, without too much movement, so there's no need to realign those. The goody bag with a super nice toothbrush, mini mouth wash and toothpaste was definitely a big plus. Definitely coming here for my teeth cleaning and any thing else from now on. She does my cleanings herself which is very important to me so that she really knows my teeth and doesn't just give a quickie exam after a hygenist saw me. Hi, my name is Rachel, and I must confess it's been at least 5 years since my last dentist visit. I'm a wimp. I'm scared of those big scary drilling machines, and I hate feeling vulnerable and having somebody's hands in my mouth. I have a good job that gives good benefits. Not utilizing said benefits is just a big fat waste. So, I searched around on Yelp for good, non-scary dentists. Avenue Dental seemed the likely choice. I called and made an appointment for a cleaning and an examination. They got me in within 5 days. Ok, here we go, I'm going to go back to the dentist. I haven't had any pain, so the pressure of going to the dentist wasn't great. But it's my summer break, and it's the time to get all this stuff done. The cleaning was painless and thorough. The examination was easy. The follow-up appointment to refill an old filling was a piece of cake, and the numbness went away within 2 hours, just as they promised. They are all very sweet, competent, and caring. And there is no big high pressure sales pitch. I want to have some elective work done, and they told me the option I have of waiting a year for when my dental insurance will cover the whole thing. If you have a car, park a few blocks away on one of the perpendicular side streets so you don't have to worry about the meter. They're all two-hour parking zones and there's no way you will take longer than two hours. The stress of finding a dentist, going to the dentist, and surviving the dentist is over. I'm actually looking forward to future visits. read more

I LOVE going to the dentist. How many people do you know can actually say that? Dr. Vu has always been the sweetest and gentlest yet most thorough dentist. I've been coming here since I was about 9 or 10. My previous denist advised me to get braces asap but before we agreed to it, we thankfully switched to Avenue Dental and asked Dr. Vu of her opinion. Because of her, we saved thousands of dollars. She told us that I was still young and my teeth were gapped for now but that we should wait it out to see if they'll eventually grow to close up the gaps and that is indeed what happened. Since then, we knew that Dr. Vu was totally trustworthy and always looking out for her clients' best interest. Their office is super clean and welcoming. The wait is not as long as it use to be when they only had 3 chairs and 2 dentists--now they have 5 chairs and an ever growing friendly staff. However, I must say the ONLY drawback is the parking which is mostly metered parking. The upside to this is that the staff will usually ask you where'd you park and what car you have so that they may go and refill the meters for you while you're in the chair--how fantastic is that?! Anytime somebody says they're in need of a new denist, I am always ready to recommend Avenue Dental! read more

I've been up here for a year now, and have been on a search for an affordable yet friendly dentist. I was referred here by a friend and so got a discount on my first teeth cleaning visit. They were very friendly and pleasant. They have accounted for every little detail to make sure I was comfortable. Such as putting Vaseline on my lips so that it doesn't become dry and crack, ( which happens to me every time I visit the dentist). And they talked me through everything they were doing explaining along the way. What put this place over the top for me was that through out the whole process, they kept checking with me to make sure I was okay. This review is for Dr. Christine Vu and staff. I've been coming here for a few years now after not having been to a dentist in a long while. I hated going to the dentist. Dr. Vu is so sweet. She knew I was nervous and scared and has always been so gentle with me. She walks me through the entire process every time. She lets me know what is about to happen so I can prepare/brace for it. She apologizes for the pain she may be inflicting on you! How sweet is that? She is just amazing. I wouldn't go to anyone else ever again. This review is *long* overdue. Dr. Huynh was my dentist while I lived in SF from 2007-11, and was one of the best, most personable dentists I've had. I'm still looking for a comparable dentist in Austin. He and his staff were always very thorough. It was he who recommended, due to my bite problems, that I see the orthodontist Dr. Kalika. I've had to have a lot of visits here in the past 6 months in order to correct some really bad work from a previous dentist. I have received nothing but excellent care from both Drs. Vu and Huynh. The best thing about Avenue Dental is that they don't try to rip you off! They make sure to check with your insurance company before doing any costly things, and will explain everything very clearly before any procedures happen. They also let you pay in two parts if you need to. Sure, the office equipment is slightly older, but everything is very clean. Honestly, consumers should beware of offices that have shiny new equipment, flatscreens, and iPads everywhere. Who do you think pays for those? The patients do! Overall, I am very glad I found this office, and will continue to go here if the standard of care remains this high. read more

This is one of several dental clinics in my 'hood and I've been going to Avenue Dentail for maybe 6 or 7 years now. (Haven't tried the others but haven't had reason to change). Overall I've had good experiences with them--I've always found them to be capable and honest, which are probably their two biggest selling points (as should be the case for any dentist, really!) I've never had them try to sell me on procedures I didn't really need, unlike other dentists I've been to, and they don't churn patients out like an assembly line--they take their time and will answer your questions. They're a family run clinic, and the dentists are a husband and wife team, so you may end up seeing either of them when you visit. They're both capable, friendly and usually remember enough details of my life/our last appointment to strike up a conversation, which is a nice personal touch. As a family clinic they serve both children and adults, and their clinic reflects that: clean and hygienic but definitely not a sleek, modern looking decor. (Though they did repaint recently). And that's OK, really...I'll take capable and honest over sleek but questionable any day. They're definitely old school when it comes to their records--there are *lots* of manila folders with patient records in the shelves behind the desk. I'm surprised that they haven't computerized everything but perhaps they're content with hard copies. Or perhaps that's the norm for dentists, except for the newest generation. I can't remember having to wait long, if ever, due to delays...maybe once? But they did explain that such delays tend to happen because of emergencies that pop up, and--having made an emergency appointment there myself--I certainly understand. Show me a medical clinic that *never ever* has any delays ever... Not quite 5 stars as I do wish they were more eco-friendly in their record keeping (by going digital) but aside from that I can't really complain...they're a solid, honest, capable family-run clinic serving a variety of patients and if that's what you are looking for, give them a try. read more

I previously reviewed Avenue Dental in December of 2009 when I first found it. Now, a year and a half later, I have perfectly straight teeth and it only took about eight months of Invisalign. I can't explain how happy I am with my entire experience at Avenue Dental. As I mentioned, I have never had a pleasant experience at any other dentist office. I went to Avenue Dental to take advantage of my dental benefits but didn't think I would ever be happy with my teeth. I have a small jaw and I have had years of braces, teeth extracted, bionators, retainers, etc. I also had a root canal when I was in my teens but did not have many cavities, luckily. My main concern when I went the first day was my bite and crooked front teeth but I didn't know if they could do anything because I thought I would have to go to an orthodontist. Dr. Huynh assured me that I had a good bite overall and approved me for Invisalign. After 6 months wearing 10 trays (that I would pick up every two weeks or so), I have very straight teeth that I love. He also spent 4 hours one Saturday putting in a permanent retainer behind my top and bottom front four teeth so that they will remain that way. Furthermore, he gave me whitening trays to make my teeth sparkle! Dr. Huynh was able to accomplish what I had spent years trying to achieve - a smile that I love. I think it is very important for me to add how wonderful the entire staff is. Teri at the front desk has became a bit of a friend over the past year! She is so friendly, understanding of any reschedule appointments I needed to make due to travel, and makes you feel welcome from day one. The rest of the staff is great too! They always called me to remind me of my appointments the day before. Furthermore, they put change in your car if the meter is about to run out. Lastly, they were flexible with the timing of my payments because I had a costly wrist surgery that occurred during my Invisalign period. I can't express in words how grateful I am for Avenue Dental. I love my teeth and never thought I would feel that way. I also felt like a part of the family there and genuinely looked forward to my next appointment. Dr.Vu is nice and patient but her staff are so mean. My orthodontic sent me to this dental office because I need to remove some teeth and fill some too before braces. After browsing the reviews on Yelp, I thought this might be a good dentist. On my first appointment, I told an assistant that I have teeth to be removed and as well there are some teeth need filling cause I need braces. I wanna them take X-ray to find out which teeth need filling. She was so impatient and said : so what do you exactly want to do? Do you know how much you should pay for this visiting? You have to pay $50 for office visiting. What the hell was she talking about? I explained again that I was here not for visiting, my orthodontic needed your help to remove teeth and do some filling before my braces. I need examination to check which teeth need filling. She was very impatient and said: I am an assistant and I don't know what you meant. Finally, Dr. Vu showed and I explained everything again and she was very nice and smart. Then I took some X-ray and had a lot of cavities. One more awful thing was they confused #18 and #31 teeth. Dr. Vu thought #31 had cavity , which one I had root canal and crown on it. I was so confused and asked why a root canal tooth could have cavity again??? The assistant (I am wondering if she ever had professional dental training) pointed the root canal part on the X-ray and said here, it is a cavity. Finally, Dr. Vu found out it was #18 which one is in the opposite sideof #31!!! I am sort of regretted but as I trusted my orthodontic and I don't want to waste my time on general dentist cuz I want to have braces ASAP. So I will take the treatment in this office. It's been over six months since I initially went here for a wisdom tooth removal and I'm still telling friends about how good my experience was here. Like most people, I'm terrified of the dentist. I've put off getting a wisdom tooth removed for nearly 10 years because it wasn't causing me immediate problems, despite every dentist I had warning me it would be trouble later. Well "later" finally arrived, and the great people at Avenue Dental were able to squeeze me in at the last minute for a removal. Everything was explained in as much detail as I wanted (and they could even tell when my queasy self had heard too much). Dr. Huynh performed the procedure, and was so gentle that my wisdom tooth was out before I realized he had even started. I walked out of the office less than a half hour after I entered, feeling ecstatic that I had such a great visit. I've since gone back for other work and cleanings, and have left just as impressed after each visit. Even though they don't take my insurance I'm not going anywhere else. The office itself isn't that fantastic (don't get me wrong, it's totally clean and everything, just rather bland), but I'd much rather have a great dentist who does great work than a fantastically decorated office space with less than stellar dentists. read more
