Mom had teeth fillings and cleaning today. Dr Kathryn Lee has been caring for mom's teeth for the last couple years. Mom's teeth (she's 94) have deteriorated due to poor daily care. Care takers struggle to brush her teeth as she clenches and isn't very cooperative. Mom has dementia and Alzheimer's. Dr Lee is super patient and skillful when treating mom. We are lucky to find her as previous other dentists have given up and declined to continue to treat mom. Mom doesn't really know what's going on so Dr Lee gently and carefully reassures mom while she is in the dentist chair. Staff assistant also gently holds mom from squiggling and is attentive the doctors directions. Supper kind and gentle with moo too. Office is very clean and well maintained. 7 treatment rooms. Decent size waiting room on the ground level. Treatment rooms are half a flight of stairs up. I've had two regular doctors over the years...one left into another situation with the state of CA, and one retired....I adored them both....so now I've had Dr. Lee.....and I adore him. I just started going to this dentist 2 months ago but man oh man it is such a turnaround from my prior dentist on the other side of town. Things here are organized and done in a professional manner and everything is done so smoothly that the only parts of the visit I fear is the work being performed inside my mouth because as anyone knows, dental work is not the most comfortable. But at Jang and Associates they do a mighty fine job of making it as stress-free as possible. Not sure why she has to be so disagreeable and argumentive but she was incorrect and flat out refused to check. I tried to make an emergency appointment with them since I was in pain and bleeding but she wanted to argue and be rude. I switched over to Jang about 4 years ago after having been with my then dentist at the time for about 9 years. I ended up leaving that dentist to go to Dr. Ray in order to fix a crown. Unfortunately my previous dentist screwed up the crown (it was too large) and Dr. Ray was able to fix it and on top of that he was able to get my insurance to cover it as well. The past 4 years have been great - he's a great dentist, funny guy, and incredibly personable and I like that he gives me the straight truth and spends time to address any of my concerns and stupid questions - great bedside manner. It's gone well enough that my wife and my two daughters have switched over as well although my daughters love Dr. Kathryn. High praise from a 6 and 9 year old whose previous dentist sounded like snow white. Highly recommend - great caring people. read more

I needed to find a new dentist since I moved further away from my last one. Unfortunately, this is not the place for me nor would I recommend it to anyone else. It seems like they operate like a factory - they have a bunch of dentists to get people in and out as quickly as they can. They are dishonest and want to charge for anything and everything they can. I was assigned to Dr. Lem and when I went in for my bi-annual cleaning, she insisted I get all the x-rays done since other dental places never send good quality x-rays when x-rays are requested for a patient (I came in with new insurance so it would cover for all of this). And then she ended up doing my cleaning too because there was no dental hygienist and it was the worst cleaning I ever received - super quick and not thorough at all (just a quick polish and some flossing). She also said I "needed" to get two fillings done...I was skeptical so I only got work done for one that "needed" it the most. Dr. Lem messed up on my filling so I had to make an appointment that was weeks out to get it examined and possibly redone. I asked if I would be billed for it and they said no because it's recent work. I asked for a different dentist (not my first time doing so) and was told no. After having to wait weeks, I saw Dr. Lem and she didn't own up to her work, ended up doing work on another neighboring tooth to "fix" my bite and alleviate my discomfort and sensitivity (I couldn't chew food or floss in the area) because she thought that was the issue. I made it clear that it was because of the filling since I never had these issues before and they appeared after I got the filling. She told me to go for a week to see if I see any improvements and if not, I can come back to get the filling redone at no cost of course. Before I left, I double-checked about the billing and they said I wouldn't be billed. Well, they did bill my insurance for it. I called and talked to the billing lady and she said the reason the visit was charged was because Dr. Lem worked on a different tooth so that's why it became a $250 emergency visit (also got billed for an x-ray she needed to verify that the filling bonded to my tooth). The billing lady then had the audacity to ask me why it even matters since I'm not paying for it because my insurance covers it. Woooow, super shady! I thought maybe it was just my experience but it wasn't. My partner also came here for a cleaning and got a different dentist. They told him he had great insurance coverage and was telling him to get stuff done that he didn't need (e.g. get a retainer - he doesn't grind or anything like that). They split up his cleaning into two visits and then made another appointment for something else shortly after. How does a bi-annual cleaning turn into multiple visits to bill??? We ended up cancelling all of our upcoming appointments. I'm not getting my filling redone for "free" and will probably just go back to my old dentist because it will be worth the trip. Dentists should make recommendations based on what is needed to maintain and improve someone's dental health, not what money they can make off of people. read more

I had an emergency tooth situation and needed to find a dentist that could take me ASAP. After calling multiple dentists and being told they didn't have any availability for weeks I called Jang & Associates, told them about my situation and they were able to take me in first thing the next morning. I'm so happy I found them. Everyone there was very nice and professional. The office was very clean and the equipment seemed up to date. The whole experience was pleasant considering it was something that wouldn't normally be a pleasant experience - 2 teeth extracted. They kept me informed of every procedure and how much it would cost. They were very personable and even humorous which I appreciate. I haven't had my own dentist in many years but I have found one now. I will definitely be going back for regular cleanings and check ups. I already have my next appointment with them for a consultation on more work as I need it. I never thought I'd say I'm looking forward to going to the dentist but I actually am. I am very satisfied with this place. Dr. Donna Lem is my dentist. All the assistants are very friendly and professional. They are fully aware of what's going on and they don't seem confused whenever I come here. In terms of cleaning and getting my teeth fixed, they are prompt and quick. I am actually amazed by how fast they are and not only are they fast, they do a good job. I have been to other dentists in the past that did a horrible job in cleaning my teeth. My family and I been seeing Dr. Jang and his associates for about a year now. Every appointment with any of us has been a good one. I'm not a big fan of going to see the dentist but they make it comfortable for me to be there. My 7 year old is one of the patients of Dr. Michael. He is very good with children. Everytime I sit in to watch my daughter during her appointments, he keeps her entertained (and distracted) by constantly talking to her. My dentist is Dr. Boh. She is very good as well. Giving them 3 stars is being generous. I've had a great experience in the past with Dr. Michael and was a little hesitant when he told me he was leaving. The dentist that took over was great but I've had reoccurring issues with the crown she had down on my lower left jaw. In less than one year it came off while I was eating bread. I went it to have it redone, this time she said it will be cemented it, after a painstaking 2 hours it was done... well here we are again after 1 year from the last the same crown chipped while I was eating and now I have to get it fixed again. Well I won't be coming back here. I feel like it's always going to be a bothersome if they fix it again. UPDATE: I went to my regular dentist (the excellent Dr. Michael Hing) today for a cleaning, and he noticed that his sonic pick thing kept getting caught on something under my gums. Turns out, Dr. Jang had filled my filling improperly, stuffing the silver composite past my gum line to the point that it's pushed against bone. Now I need to go back to have him fix it (and really, on my 4th visit for the same filling, how can I trust him to do the job?), unless my insurance will allow Dr. Hing to work on it. Additionally, the tooth that Dr. Hing had originally found the cavity in during my last cleaning was not even filled. Dr. Jang had filled another (probably healthy) tooth. So now I have an appointment to get the correct tooth filled. I hope my horrible experience is enough to convince you to stay far, FAR away from Butcher Jang, who might as well have gotten his dentistry degree online for what his "skills" show. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I originally started out going to their offices in San Leandro, which is run by Dr. Calvert Jang's brother, Corey. Dr. Corey was really nice and worked SUPER fast, filling my 2 cavities (sweet tooth + bad genes, what can I say?) in the blink of an eye. Then I moved to San Francisco... I continued going to Jang Associates because the weekend appointments were convenient. Who wants to take a "vacation" day to see a dentist? Long story short, I had to go back to this place 3 times to get a filling done properly (well, having just gone for the 3rd time yesterday, we'll see how long "properly" lasts). Sure, the second and third times were "free," but who wants to sit through all that extra anesthetizing, drilling, suctioning and prodding? When I called and said my filling fell out and that I needed to get it re-done ASAP, the receptionist didn't seem surprised or concerned -- as if it happened all the time there! Good things about Jang & Associates: -They're open 7 days a week - good place to call if you have a dental emergency on the weekend. -They use gas if you're squeamish Not-so-good things about Jang & Associates: -Many of their dental assistants don't have a good grasp of English. If you only speak English and want to ask a question or have something explained to you, you might get met with a blank stare. -Dr. Weber isn't there anymore :( -A lot of the people I came in contact with there on weekends were "new" or "in training" (My support of on-the-job training pretty much ends when you're poking around in my mouth with sharp instruments). I would not go here. They offer some nice specials and I was lured here with that. When I got there they seemed really nice. I waited for a while even though I had an appointment. When I got to the chair they cleaned my teeth and the lady seemed really fake. I realized this when she was trying to get to know me then offered me another service but I declined then she seemed very short with me because I didn't want to buy the extra services. That was hella of shady. The place is located in the quiet sunset neighborhood and convenient for me but I will look for a more professional and betters service place. I felt like a ping-pong ball in that place. As if they couldn't wait to get me out and the next patient in quick enough. Also, how can I trust a dentistry where the dentists don't have teeth nearly as nice, even and white as mine are. They're equipment also seemed kind of old. The lamp thing she was using was malfunctioning or something. After I sat back and stared passed the dentist and up at the dingy, cheap tiled ceiling, I knew I was going to chose another place next time. I don't feel like my teeth got that "dentist clean" feeling, but the x-ray was useful. I found out the pain in my back tooth is caused by a wisdom tooth. I've had it a while, but it didn't start bugging me until recently. Not a constant pain only occasionally, when I crunch on something hard. So I'll have it extracted maybe in the next two weeks. Also, a couple days later, I caught the flu which I'm suffering from right now. Leads me to wonder if I got it from there. :( read more

I had being going to Jang & Associates for the past 6 years. They have a friendly staff, cleanings are good and great that they work weekends. Unfortunately, on my last visit they could not seem to fix my chipped tooth. I had to return a few times because it fell off. It was never done to my satisfaction. I finally decided to see another dentist to get it fixed properly and found out that many of my old silver fillings were cracking my teeth. This is not something that just happened in the past 12 months and Jang and Associates never mentioned that they should be replaced or that there were fractures in my teeth. Now I need a very expensive Crown which could have been avoided. As nice as they are, I would not recommend them. read more

I am well aware that one should not pick their dentist by seeing who mailed me the best coupon vs who is the closest. However, I was in between jobs and didn't have insurance, so $89 for a complete check-up, cleaning, x-rays, and a toothbrush seemed a reasonable deal to me. I'm not alone is that sentiment, because when I entered the waiting room, it was packed! When I had insurance, I had been going to a rather expensive dentist, but a good one. Therefore, I was shocked when I came into Jang and Associates to discover they they have really nice and new equipment. (Not that I was expecting Steve Martin from Little Shop of Horrors) Their equipment was nicer than my fancy butt dentist. I met with Jang's daughter, who I thought was very nice, competent, and knowledgeable. She pointed out to me that I have been grinding my teeth, and that I would need a mouth-guard, if I wanted to keep them much longer. Fearing that this was the trick to get me to shell out more money, I gave her an annoyed expression. She shook her head, and told me how I could use a sports guard, if I could handle sleeping with it! Whoa, that sounds wrong. Couldn't afford X-rays. Just cleaning. Had to tell them several times no X-rays. Last time I got X-rays they tried to talk me into getting 2 fillings replaced that are fine. Replacing those fillings would result in needing 2 root canals equalling $2000. Got X-rays elsewhere and dentist said those fillings were fine. Kinda shook his head in disbelief. They do teeth cleaning really well but if that's all you want they treat you like an inconvenience. Dentist would barely speak to me after I turned down getting X-rays. At end of cleaning she walked out w/o saying anything. I had to literally ask if everything was done. She didn't even look up at me. Just waved me off. Dr. Kathy lee is amazing and is the only reason I go all the way to San Francisco from Alameda for dental work. The particular reason I am writing this review is my recent experience with her. My wisdom teeth are growing in and I went to see her about it in September regarding it. It was not a concern at that time but she was very adamant about speaking to my orthodontist about my treatment. She has been attempting to contact my ortho while emailing me from time to time to give me updates. Last week my wisdom teeth starting hurting really bad, my neck started to swell. I emailed her with my symptoms and she got back to me right away, genuinely being concerned. She was urgently provided me with referrals to oral surgeons and has called me to check up on me. While my appointment isn't until Monday she has saved me by prescribing antibiotics and pain medication. Dr. Lee is the best. I have never felt a medical professional be so caring about my well being. I will continue to go to her for as long as I can. read more

I don't know about any commercials, but they had the best coupon in the Yellow Pages, so i somehow sucked up my tremendous fear of pain and went down to get my teeth checked out after 3 years. I found out I had two cavities and the dentist must have sensed how poor I am because she said to wait until she spoke with the people at the Dentist School and they might be able to do it for free.... Yes, free. She was going to send my business away because she is nice. So she called me back later on in the week and let me know the School wouldn't do my type of cavities, so I made an appointment and came in for the most wonderful cavity filling experience of my life. If you don't have dental insurance, let them know that before your appointment and ask if a payment plan can be arranged. Many doctors and dentists these days want some form of payment the day of service. So it is always good to check first. This is the first place where I felt comfortable with my dentist. It's so hard to find a dentist that's good and can understand the history of your teeth from just looking at it. Dr. Lee made me feel very comfortable and good; I feel like most dentist now a days make patients feel bad and uncomfortable. Also most places I go, the dentist isn't cleaning my teeth and it's usually their assistant or hygienist which is fine but getting my teeth cleaned by the actual dentist felt like they cared more. Also they looked at the history of my teeth first, did that counting 1-10 scale for the teeth, then proceeded to clean my teeth. Literally other places I've gone to, did the X-ray, then teeth cleaning, then at the end the dentist came in to access my teeth (the 1-10 scale). It doesn't make sense to do it at the end? Wouldn't you want to know how bad or good the teeth are before you clean as a roadmap/guidance? But safe and glad to say that at Jang and Associates, they do things in the correct order. I might actually just go hang out in the waiting room to see if I can sneak onto the next tv commercial.
