They were very experienced and knowledgeable about certain illnesses for dogs-especially French bull dogs. In darkest times of the beginnings of the COVID 19 lockdown I managed to find this pleasant, efficient vet clinic to care for my little companion, Clyde. Though I've never met the doctor I can tell you that the staff are pleasant, animal sensitive people. Clyde has had everything from some major dental surgery to routine medical care. He seems anxiety free when I hand him over to the staff in their touchless COVID safety protocols and quite content when they return him to me. The clinic communicates rather efficiently by text and email. Clyde's regular vet is 1000 miles away so I am very happy to have found this conveniently located, trustworthy clinic to provide his care while I am on a contract job here in Tacoma. You guys rock and you got the Clyde stamp of approval as well as mine. read more

The staff is super friendly and really made the vet visit a pleasant experience. Prices are a little higher than what I'm used to, but it is a private owned vet clinic, so it's to be expected that some services are more expensive than other places. However, I got my pup spayed here and they truly did an amazing job with her as well as being understanding and patient with all of my questions and follow up phone calls. read more

ANNOYED! Took my senior car Trixa in for a new patient appointment as a way to find her a vet closer to home. The vet assistant took her vitals, then gave me the paperwork to fill out. Turns out they do NOT take Care Credit. Needless to say I put Trixa back in her carrier and walked out. It is bad enough that vets want to now charge more than twice what they did prior to covid. But then to deny us who are less fortunate any way to pay for that greater expense.... The place is Avenue Vet in Tacoma. I do NOT recommend! read more

This vet has no problem with over charging a client. I have a new dog to me and wanted to carry her onboard the plane for an upcoming trip. I was told by someone in the past that she would need an ok to travel health certificate. In the past I paid 0, $15,00 and $25,00 for previous pets, As it turned out that was for In Cargo travel for larger pets. This dog was 12lbs and the vet should have asked onboard or in cargo? There is No requirement for Ok to Travel Certificate for On Board travel simply a health certificate within 30 days of travel. Well the ver/owner charge $75.00 for a check up and $150.00 for Ok to travel cert (which was not needed. Charged almost double to have her nails clipped. This vet has no interest in taking care of your dog only in securing the most money she can, She gave me an $1,100 quote to have 1 tooth extracted and to have the teeth cleaned. I paid $400. for a previous pet to have 4 teeth extracted and teeth cleaned, I am sure you can find a more fair priced vet. She makes it almost impossible with her high prices to own a dog. read more

Terrible client service by the managing doctor. Only cares about the income. Very demeaning.

I've been using Avenue vet clinic for years, I really thought this was an amazing place, until.. She diagnosed my grand dog with cancer, she said she needed her leg amputated or to be put to sleep sooner than later! The surgery would cost $4000 but wasn't guaranteed that she would live thru it, just a maybe possibly, she prescribed her some strong pain meds and then we took our baby home and we all cried and loved on her and tried to get our minds and hearts prepared to lose our family member, our 5 year old girl baby girl! she (the vet) demanded she get her rabies shot which is not recommended for a dog with cancer but she was trying to add on any little charge she possibly could, anyway that night once I was able to try and think straight I started searching for a natural way to help her, I found the Tagamet/Benadryl protocol on Facebook, this lady has helped so many dogs get thru cancer and add years on to their life, it gave me some hope! I started her on the protocol that next day! Within 4 days she was walking on her leg again and eating full meals and just seemed all around happier and feeling better, there is still a long road of healing ahead of us and on the protocol they can only take tramadol for pain so we called her with the good news about the protocol and asked her to prescribe her the tramadol since she couldn't take the other pain meds she had prescribed, she refused! She said it wasn't scientifically proven to work (which it actually is!) and said she didn't feel good about it, of course you don't feel good about it because your gonna miss out on that $4000 to kill my dog!!!! She would not prescribe the meds our baby needed THEN she called animal control on us!!! Luckily animal control ALWAYS wants what's best for the dogs so she was very sweet and supportive, she ACTUALLY looked into the protocol unlike the vet and is being helpful instead of hateful like the vet!!! I feel really bad that I recommended this woman to anyone she clearly does not have her patients best interest only her pocket book!!! Needless to say we fired the Bit** and found a much better vet that cares more about his patients!! read more

I decided to try a vet closer to home and I completely regret it. The office staff is not helpful when you call for questions. When the Dr calls after the exam she is impatient. I took my dog in for her puppy shots, they up-sold me for things I didn't need- but didn't do the rabies shot. I took my puppy in two weeks later for the rabies shot and had to pay for the shot AND another $42.50 for another exam. This was not disclosed when they took my pet inside. Also, if they did any exam it wasn't very thorough because my dog was in there for less than 10 min, and the Dr never called to tell me results of the exam. I highly recommend any other Veterinary office. I am so disappointed in the service at this place. read more

I am big on word of mouth. My fur baby stepped on a nail last night. I ran to Walgreens on 56th to get supplies the manager there recommended Avenue Veterinary Clinic. I went today and they were so nice, quick to get me in, and gave my baby the TLC he deserves. The best service. A wonderful place to go during a pet emergency. And my bill was only $140. I've had emergency care at a different place before it cost me $800 and the service was terrible. Would recommend if you want honest people, animal lovers, and sincere. In June of 2017 Cooney came into my life I tried the nudge him away at least a dozen times after feeding him once and he would not leave on that last nudge he bit my big toe.... it was love at first bite. In September of 2018 my Cooney got sick and I took him to Avenue Veterinary Clinic they did everything they could to help him get back on track we managed to get through that sickness and he came back to good health until last month May 25th 2021 unfortunately due to covid restrictions and all the Vets being busy I could not get into Avenue Veterinary at first and I had to go twice to a vet hospital that I had no love for, but alas on the 26th, I was told that I could bring him in after my third call, we rushed over there and they fixed cooney once again this time he stayed the night but came home the next day. Dr. Haviland and her crew are wonderful people. And instead of doing the most invasive procedures as the hospital had wanted to do they found the problem and fixed it without going through the trouble of putting Cooney through more pain. I can't thank them enough and I hope covid ends soon so I'll never have to deal with another vet that does not know my Cooney! read more

One of the worst vet experiences I have ever had. Dr. Haviland has terrible bedside manner, poor communication skills, and seems to think she is smarter than literally the 3 other vets I consulted regarding the issue with my dog. It is no wonder this is one of the only vets in the area you can get in to see pretty quickly - I imagine they struggle to keep business. Here's what happened: we brought in my 14-year-old miniature dachshund when she was presenting with significant pain - she "worked her in" for an up charge and then had the vet tech call us saying there was $700 things that needed to happen. After some push back it was clear that part of the work up was not necessary knocking down the price by $300. We go home with pain meds and plan to follow up. Well a week later we follow up cause the dog is in pain again (she is 14 and a long belly so we are not surprised). Doggo has also had been more anxious lately probably because of pain and when we come back we say we need to look at long term pain management and we want to put her on a anxiety med that she has previously been on for years when she was an apartment dog. Dr. Haviland, while trying to rush us off the phone, refused to consider giving her meds without an additional test (there's that $300), which didn't make sense as again the dog is 14 so if her organs aren't happy we are still going to manage her pain. Again at this point Dr. Haviland totally talked down to us like we were stupid so we just did the test cause we want to get the dog out of pain. We left with one of the pain meds and the anti anxiety med but only for 2 weeks as she says "this is not a good long term medication for the dog". I talked with my best friend who is a vet and a previous vet I worked with in socal so 3 vets all say that the med we want is perfectly safe and effective for long term use. We try to communicate this with her staff and they said they would give us more meds while she transitioned onto Prozac (which you have to give every day at the same time and doesn't really work for us) but also just completely forgot to fill her pain meds. In the end we picked up the med we wanted and got them to fill the pain meds (which she literally never gave us a plan around) and within like 2 days she had her staff contact us again to say how it's a bad plan to use the med we previously used for YEARS and that 3 other vets said were a good option. Well I fired her. I have never felt so disrespected by a vet and I would literally not recommend going here to anyone. read more

I last went to Avenue Vet Clinic on 12/17/21 to renew arthritis meds for my 16 year old dog, Emma. The staff is very friendly and I am sure Dr. Haviland is a fine vet. However, I wish she would have discussed palliative or end of life care for Emma rather than recommending (expensive) labwork and xrays to treat her for "long term" pain management, which I declined. Emma's "long term" ended on January 31, 2022. I suppose the labwork and xrays are necessary for a vet to treat pain, but, it seemed an unnecessary expense to just renew meds that were already prescribed (albeit by a different vet). read more

Avenue Vet Clinic is top a notch outfit! After a culminating bad experience in December with our previous vet, I had much hesitation regarding where to go for veterinary care for our family pets. However, based on a previous encounter with Dr. Havilland in Puyallup, I chose to come to her office. Let me say that I am beyond happy/pleased with the care and attention that two of our dogs have received from Dr. Havilland and her staff at Avenue Veterinary Care. I needed a bird specialist vet to have my newly acquired parrot checked out. Initially, I went to one in Tacoma and waited and waited and waited. While I realise there were many people there for similar reasons or other, it was ridiculously long. Finally, we asked the clerk if there were another vet who could see us. She recommended Dr. Brewster. So off we went to see Dr. Mark Brewster. Not only was the receptionist (April) polite and knowledgeable, but helped us in completing all necessary paperwork well before the doctor was even finished with his other patient. I also like the way the office, though a bit small, separated the cats from the dog/bird side. At that time, they had a couple of office cats, but they didn't seem to bother the birds. Mine was in a carrying cage too. (I highly recommend doing that for all pets who may be afraid or have an aptitude to attack other animals or people.) I was seen fairly immediately and found out that all was well with the bird. After that, I also took my dogs to him. The only reason why I did was because my regular vet had died from cancer. I really liked that doctor and had hoped he would've beaten the cancer. It was very sad. Eventually, my dogs had to be put to sleep--after several years (one to diabetes and the other because I couldn't bear to see her suffering in her old age and she was about to die). Each time, I received sympathy cards and condolences from April. The only thing I didn't like about this place was that Dr. Brewster seems to think every dog, regardless of height, should follow the exact weight on his outdated breeds chart. He would say that my dogs were overweight (which they were not) and always wanted to trim their nails. I only had it done once by him, but generally did it myself. Trimming nails wasn't a hard task. My mother started taking her dogs to him too, but frankly, I think he's a bit prejudiced against Asians. Although my mother does overfeed her dogs and they are obese, he told her once that the best thing for them would probably be to put them down. That's not an attitude I ever expect any doctor to say, regardless of how s/he may feel about the breed. (And yes, he did tell me that he didn't particularly care for min pins.) This was more than a decade ago. read more

Terrible experience. First they forgot the appointment I had made a week prior and had to "squeeze me in." Second they gave both my dogs shots they didn't need and charged me $40 dollars for them. Then they charged me a $58 office visit fee I was not told didn't exist when I called to make the appointment. This place is overprived and uncaring, we will not be returning! read more

PLEASE READ BEFORE GOING HERE!! I would give 0 stars if I could. I decided to take my 1 year old cat to this vet clinic after reading many reviews and reading about other vets. Since we have brought our older cat here before, we thought it would be best to stick to a place we have been to and thought it was reasonably priced at first. I thought my cat had a UTI but began to really worry when he stopped peeing, eating, and drinking. He would try but nothing came out. I came in 20 mins after opening so wait wasnt long. Got checked in, brought into a room where I explained his symptoms. I was told that he had a urethra obstruction and this was an emergency (which it was). We started to go over what they had to do and an estimate of cost which was $1300! We are low income so I had to find financial help ASAP. I found funds through my grandmother who was willing to help me but knew that he didnt need everything that they were recommending. Since her cat has gone through the same thing, she knew what we needed to have done in order to save his life. We did the bare minimum and after cutting some things out, we still had to pay $800 right away. This included catheter to relieve obstruction, IV catheter, IV fluid, and take home prescriptions, plus a hospital stay with anesthesia. We asked why we couldn't take him home which is when they told us they wanted to watch him. How do they watch him after 5 pm when they close and everyone goes home? Well they will tell you that they watch your fur babies through CAMERAS. Yeah right. Were 2 hours away from pickup time (noon) the next day and I get a call while at work saying they want to transfer him to a different emergency vet since they close soon and wont be able to treat him after they close. We were told he was still having trouble peeing and when he did pee, it was pure blood. We just spent $800 and then have to come up with even more for another emergency vet. I tell them I will call back with a decision and instead of waiting for a call back, they call my fiance. The attitude we both got on the phone was absolutely ridiculous and just rude. I get off work early and my mother and I head over to the clinic where we were taken in a room to discuss what they did and what they recommend moving forward. I tell them I will be taking him home where I can watch him while I find additional funds. She goes on about the consequences and makes me feel bad for not having enough money. I sign a form to take him home and they tell me they are going to remove the catheter and CLEAN HIM UP. We are given pain meds, antibiotics, prescription diet, and a PISS SOAKED cat. He was covered from belly down in pee. What is cleaning him up mean? They didn't even try. When leaving I'm told I owe another $15. Whatever. We leave and watch him throughout the night. Hes still not eating and only dribbling when trying to pee. Only a few drops. It started out really bloody but started to dilute once he drank more water. We found enough funds the next day (today) to bring him in to another emergency vet where they relieved his bladder with their hands, gave him more medications to give him on top of the other medications given to us by Avenue clinic. He was given a cone to stop licking his genitals which I didnt know was bad until they told us it was (avenue clinic said nothing). They said they believe he will be ok and doesnt need to be hospitalized, just watched, force fed, and given his meds. It should clear up. Most the blood that he was dribbling was from the catheter. He now seems to feel a quite a bit better and the bill was less than $200. They were disgusted with Avenue clinic and said other customers have complained about being mistreated and taken advantage of. I'm disgusted with their lack of caring for our cat. It was all about the money and customer service was terrible by the vet (receptionist was nice). They will rip you off and then make you feel like shit when you cant afford thousands right away out of pocket. Save time and money by taking them to a better vet. Disgusted and pissed off. read more

Very professional, clean, and affordable. The staff and Dr. H greeted me and my cat with welcoming smiles. The ladies I talked to kept me up to date, and always informed me how much everything would cost. The clinic opens at 9:00 am, but due to my work schedule were gracious enough to open their doors at 7:30 am. Cant stand this place anymore. The Doctor is all about the money. She actually doesnt care about the animals. I tried relentlessly to get my dogs meds during the COVID pandemic and when I finally got a hold of them they said my dog needed a yearly check to keep getting her meds. "Ok Fine how much will that be?" She quoted me a ridiculous price as usual. I then told her I didnt know if I would he able to pay that amount at this time and she tells me that they would settle for me getting a minimum screening for my dog which would be about $200. Mind you my dogs medicine is another $200. So I agree and make the appt. I tell her that in the mean time my dog is miserable without her medication. She has an allergy that she takes daily medication for and she also takes a medicine that helps her control her bladder. I ask her simply if she could give me enough medicine to get me through to the appt and she flat out says "NO". Now you tell me why she couldnt give me a weeks worth of medication. HMMMM It doesnt matter that I paid her 4 or $500 dollars to spay my dog and I spent well over $1000 to get my litter of 4 pups shots and wormed or that I spent thousands of dollars there in the last year. Shes more worried about making sure she can get that exam fee instead of my dog being cared for. And so you know this is just one incident but it will be the last! I need to see no more than what I've seen the last year to know that she is all about the cash and nothing more. You definitely shouldn't be a vet if you dont care about the animals! read more
