I am sorry to have to reveal the downside of this vet practice, but it must be done. In 4 years I saw all but one of the vets, and the turnover was high. Although Dr. Oden gave my IRWS very good care, when she moved on I was flipped to the senior vet, then to a spanking new vet who had graduated just a few months before. On this occasion, my dog waited 25 minutes for the tech in a claustrophobic room without a mat or rug (new doc didn't like the mat and had removed it, I was told). The tech mentioned she had been helping a colleague clip nails and lost track of time. It wasn't an apology for her tardiness, just an aside. The 20ish vet came in masked, and when I went to shake his hand he told me he was sick. Since I am immuno-compromised, this was not a great start. After telling me my dog's heart and lungs sounded great, and her teeth were gorgeous, he lectured me about her weight (appropriate and some good info). He then began explaining how to handle geriatric dogs. I listen for a minute, confused, before saying, "She is 4." He said he had mixed her up with his previous patient. She was lightly sedated for the appointment as previous vets had recommended (anxiety!) but she was right in front of him, is AKC, and her g-g-grand father was a contestant at Westminster--in no way does she look grey, stiff, or snaggle-toothed. I then brought up anxiety medicines. I wanted a change due to tremors and stomach issues in reaction to fluoxetine. Doc was stumped. He did not know of another anti-anxiety med. He suggested the brand-name version of the same medicine. I said her reactions indicated we need to try another entire family of meds and suggested a couple my VetMD search had turned up. He said he would do some research and email me. This is bread-and-butter veterinary care for a city-vet in the 21c, but after all, he was new. He did email a couple of days later, and suggested the only other dog-approved anxiety med (lots of human drugs are used off-label) with a very long taper, due to concerns about life-threatening "serotonin syndrome." In this he was confused. Serotonin syndrome is a reaction to too much serotonin-increasing medication (such as a dose increase), not abrupt withdrawal. Abrupt withdrawal is not as serious, though uncomfortable (brain zaps), and is called "discontinuation syndrome." I did not correct him (I regret that), but told him I was familiar with serotonin syndrome and wouldn't risk my dog's health. Ignoring my statement that the tablets were scored and easy to cut, he called in unneeded smaller mg tablets of her original medication not once, but twice. I cancelled them. Since the dog was already getting her med only 40% of the time, and I am a VERY experienced dog owner AND married to a psychiatrist, I was able to write him sooner than he anticipated (three weeks) to say she was almost weaned off it and since I was doing my monthly Costco run the next weekend, it would be convenient if the med were called in so I could pick it up then. This sparked an ANGRY email from him berating me for endangering my dog. I am guessing he has never gone off an antidepressant personally; his five week taper might (?) have been textbook, but not necessary in this case. She had been carefully monitored and had had no negative symptoms. We were switching to a med in another class, so doubling up serotonin wasn't a concern. Nevertheless, he said he would NOT prescribe until the previously specified date 2 weeks on. I wrote very politely and said that that would be fine. It would be ok for her to wait, then I could see if she had out-grown the issues. Only he did NOT call it in. My dog spent a miserable Christmas month full of separation anxiety, reactiveness to other dogs and visitors, and fear during New Year fireworks. Two months after my visit on October 30, I returned to Chambers Creek, a clinic that I had used years ago for previous dogs, which incidentally charged 50% less for a visit. Not until this clinic had requested my current dog's records did Met Vet call-in the new medication to Costco. This was a horrible and avoidable experience for my dog. Over and over this new vet displayed his own lack of knowledge and experience and his lack of respect for me, my knowledge and experience, and my ability to care for my pet. Worst of all, he did not follow through on his promise to prescribe in a timely manner. As a result my dog was left unmedicated during the most stressful month of the year. This inexperienced doctor needs to be overseen carefully by senior doctors. Clearly, this oversight is missing. I am concerned for dogs who go to him for ordinary medical concerns, such as separation anxiety. read more

Our pets have received the best care from MVH, including compassionate end of life care for our aging pets. We usually see Dr Linda, but the entire staff is great. We live in Olympia, but drive to Tacoma because we feel like MVH provides the best care for our furry family members. read more

I love my dog. He's my very sweet little monster. In the last year, he's become very problematic about getting his nails clipped. To the point that my previous vet (before I moved to Tacoma) put him out for another service and cut his nails then. I moved to Tacoma and COVID shut everything down. One day, I noticed my dog had broken off part of his nail and I realized I had to get serious about finding a vet. Metropolitan Vet Hospital was able to see us the next day. After lots of sedatives, and me and two techs, we were able to cut his nails. We went back about 6 weeks later for a maintenance cut. Again, heavily sedated, he completely melted down. The tech and I talked it over and we're going to try some other options for the next trip. They are great about explaining their mentality about working with dogs and what line is too far in terms of dealing with an issue. I look forward to working with them to resolve this and keep him healthy. read more

Three months ago my sweet Freckles had to be put down after a valiant fight against FIP. About 10 days before she passed, I brought her into Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital (MetVet) to have her seen due to some concerns with her health. Dr. Jeanne Neeson and I spoke on the phone during Freckles' first visit. She informed me of her initial results and a clear path to next measures. She would later inform me that she suspected FIP. The next day Freckles was brought back for an ultrasound and the suspected diagnosis was quickly the focus of her treatment. It would take a few days to cement this finding, but we were provided instructions on how to manage her care with the greatest empathy I've ever experienced with a veterinary practice. In the time before she passed, Dr. Neeson and literally everyone else at MetVet showed great amounts of compassion, love, and excruciating care in everything they do. They were all rooting for Freckles along the way. This continued through Freckles' passing and in the time after. Freckles' remains and other items of remembrance I received as part of the private ceremony were beyond my expectations. Because of the experience Freckles and I were provided, for as long as I can make it to MetVet, I will exclusively take any future pets to their practice. I won't post the whole story but when you have to call a vet 3 days in a row and they promise to get back to you each day and do NOT, it's time for a new vet. I gave them a 5 star rating for Dr Warren. Changing it to 2. I am looking for a new practice after working ia prescription refill for a week. Now my dog has no meds and by the time we find a new vet her allergies will likely be out of control. UPDATE: optimistic after a phone discussion with office staff and a visit with Dr. Neeson. I have a two year old blind dog who is both incredibly loving and incredibly sensitive, and I have been blown away by the patience and compassion Met Vet's entire staff has shown both me and my dog. The vet team is transparent in their approach to treatment, and takes time to discuss all treatment options available. While a trip to the vet during a pandemic isn't ideal, they put in the extra effort to maintain a safe and secure practice, and deliver excellent customer service despite covid restrictions. My dog is sensitive and reactive to new people and spaces (being blind as he is), and the Met Vet team worked with me as a team to help my dog feel at ease during treatment. We first saw Doctor Warren when MetVet was so new that they hadn't hung the wall art yet. I have a cat with chronic health problems (food allergies, weight issues, general previous-life-on-the-streets recurring virus problems) and Dr. Warren was great with her. My cat is super-picky about veterinary staff and usually only likes male doctors, I was kind of surprised when she brushed up against Dr. Warren several years ago at our first visit. I was in for a surprise again when we saw Dr. Gray recently and the same thing happened! MetVet handled all of my pet care until I moved away in the process of a divorce. They were great about faxing records to my new vet when I moved. Now that I've moved back (still only two blocks away!,) they were certainly happy to update my files and call the intervening vets to get records. Better still, Dr. Gray had read the records by the time she came in to the exam room for our visit - that's better than most doctors for humans! Rather than run me around on a million treatments and special food for my cat, they asked me what was and wasn't working, what had worked in the past, and we came up with a plan together. They handled my (twelve year old) cat with care and an obvious love of animals - which meant my cat stayed pretty calm through the whole exam and even being taken back for shots and lab work. Now only if my preschooler had fared better seeing his cat disappear out the back door of an exam room. (He and the cat were a united anti-doctor front during the visit.) The prices aren't out of range with other area veterinary clinics. Veterinary care is very expensive, I wish there was a way to set up payment plans or something. I know my most recent visit wiped out our emergency funds and half the grocery budget. It's worth it, though, for compassionate care that's locally owned and managed. read more

Moved in close to the hospital and thought I would take my dog in for a check up and dental evaluation, hoping to establish future care for my small dog. After my consultation, It was recommended I have his teeth deep cleaned and they would send me an estimate. Fast forward to procedure day. Check in the was fine. Teeth cleaning however was done horrible- the dr who did the cleaning, left right after the cleaning before my dog was out of recovery and able to come home. I had to get my aftercare instructions from a front desk member. Then was told the dr would call and give me update about how it all went. That didn't happen until two days later. After I contacted them with concerns. They only care about taking you money. They had no problem calling to charge me for two week follow up appointment. Please do not visit this clinic. Dr. Natalie Warren is great. The first thing they did when I called was order copies of xrays from our last vet, and get my kitty's history from his last 3 vets. I knew we hit a gold mine here. Dr. Warren is understanding, gentle, and never forceful. She didn't want to stress my kitty out more than he was, and postponed the stressful procedues (temperature check!) for our next visit. She is very good at looking at each animal individually. My kitty has a lot of allergies and is very sensitive, and she is working with me to find a suitable rabies vaccination and flea prevention plan (both of which my kitty has had reactions to). She didn't just assume something and shove it down like our last vet. The prices are even better than my last Tacoma vet (whose Yelp page indicate very fair prices), and here you'll get individual attention, preventative and active care, phone calls, and a happy pet. We've been visiting Met Vet since it first opened. When I met Dr. Warren at a networking event and took her card, little did I know that I would be in search of a veterinarian just a short time later when one of our dogs, Jeffrey, had a nasty case of bladder stones. We were given immediate assistance and Dr. Warren worked to help us save money by finding a study accepting bladder stones assessment for no cost. She contacted us over the weekend to check on our pup to make sure he was comfortable. We have used Met Vet not only for veterinary services but also for boarding. Dr. Warren personally walked out dog in Wright Park during the week we were out of town. Jeffrey previously had shown fear aggression to another vet but Dr. Warren took the time to get to know him and he was always happy during his vet visits. Since that first visit several years ago we have lost several beloved dogs, two to cancer. While it isn't a cheerful topic, the way an office handles the death of a beloved pet is so important. Dr. Warren and her staff were incredibly kind and helped us through the process of euthanasia. We were provided with medication to keep them comfortable in the last few days while we said goodbye and were given time at the office until we were ready for the injection. I was able to hold my dogs in my arms through the process. Met Vet works with a local funeral home and provides group and individual cremation. I cannot recommend Met Vet highly enough. They are open late several days a week and their prices are in alignment with other offices in the area. I have called several times with issues needing immediate attention and the only question I have been asked is, "How fast can you get here?" saving me from having to visit the emergency vet. read more

After a terrible experience at another Tacoma vet clinic, I decided to choose a non-"value" clinic, hoping I could get proper care. Not only did my chihuahua get AMAZING care from the staff, but it was also very affordable compared to the awful "affordable" vet clinic i had previously went to. The staff are amazing, answered all my many questions, and have been great with follow up calls to make sure everything is doing great. I have transferred all of my dog's previous records to this clinic and we will be there to stay!! Love this veterinary clinic! The front end staff were very personable and polite, the technician was knowledgeable and the doctor was super helpful and had a very vibe. The office has plenty of parking, was very clean, well organized and smelled nice. We took our min-pin for a visit because he's been sick and lethargic. They did a work up, gave suggestions for treatment plans, provided a high and a low estimate, and let me make the decision. In all, the visit was pleasant and we left with a treatment strategy for our pup. By the way, our min-pin isn't very personable, but he warmed right up to the doctor and technician. Dr. Linda has been the doctor for both of my dogs, for the entire 7 years I have been in Tacoma. They have great service and a great staff. I have always been happy with the care that my animals have received and communication has always been great. They get super busy, just like any place, but it has never taken more then a day or two for them to get back to me, and if its urgent they will get a hold of you immediately. read more

I am very disappointed with Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital. I took Lola, our Rat Terrier in for shots and annual check up on Friday 2/2/18. Dr. Linda Niedbalski gave her 4 shots Rabies, DHPP, Bordetello and Lepto. In addition there was a blood draw and urine sample taken. On Sunday, Lola started having diarrhea. Lola has been with us since she was 7 months old. She is now almost 11 years old. This is the first time she has had diarrhea in all of that time. Too many shots at once? Dr. Niedbalski called on Tuesday to say that the tests were good except there was a problem with her urine values and asked me to bring Lola in so that they could draw more urine through a catheter. I mentioned the diarrhea, but that did not seem to be a focus for Dr. Niedbalski. I took Lola in around 9:00 am on Wednesday, 2/7. When I dropped her off I was told she would be ready by 1:00 pm. I finally pick her up around 4:00 pm and they still had not been able to extract urine. Dr. Niedbalski gave me a prescription for an antibiotic to treat the diarrhea. She followed up with a call in a couple of days. At that point we agreed that we would get the diarrhea cleared before doing any more testing. Dr. Niedbalski said she would call again in about a week. When I did not hear from Dr. Niedbalski by 2/20, I called Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital. She was busy when I called, so I asked that she return my call. I did not received a return call from Dr. Niedbalski until 2/23. I really do not know what to think about this delayed response, but in light of the possible problem detected in Lola's urine sample, I would think that the doctor would show a little more concern. As it turns out Dr. Niedbalski did me a favor. As a result of her inaction I found a new Vet, who I really like. I won't being going back to Metropolitan. read more

The staff and physicians at Metropolitan are kind, competent, empathetic, and my cats love them. Their offices are located in a convenient spot in downtown Tacoma and they have their own parking lot. It's just down the street from several cafes and coffee shops in case you need to leave your pet with them for a bit. LOVE LOVE LOVE this vet. My oldest fur baby has seen plenty of vets in his 9 accident prone years and Dr. Warren and staff at Met Vet are the absolute best. Kind, gentle (affordable too) and knowledgable is how this office is run. I first came to Met Vet 3 years ago in a frantic panic 5 minutes before closing on a Wednesday. My lab had not been eating and had recently starting breathing very shallow. They gladly came out to my car had a listen to his heart and lungs and said he would make it through the night and to bring him back for an appt in the morning so we didn't have to go to the emergency vet clinic. He had his appt and he had to go to the emergency clinic but since it was referred through a vet appt we didn't have to pay an emergency fee. My dog was gravely ill and Dr Warren called after hours to get information on his ER clinic appt and to find out the plan of action they were taking. She took the time to explain in soothing terms what my dog might have ahead of him. At the ER clinic we had an encounter with the most horrible Dr and I was so distraught over it. Dr Warren asked about it and made sure that Dr. wasn't ours at all in the remaining week that Fyscher had to spend at the clinic being saved. Dr. Warren called frequently on her own time to check on us and our status. She even gave us her after hours number to call if we needed anything at all. Long story short Fyscher survived a very life threatening lung infection and lived to have follow up care at Met Vet. The only way we stayed sane through this experience was through Dr Warren's compassion even though my dog wasn't being treated at Met Vet. We have since had 3 more big incidents with at least one of our 3 dogs and every time the entire staff has made us feel comfortable and got to the root of the problem quickly. There was never any pressure to do extra unnecessary tests to get more money out of us. We are presented with numerous treatment options with all the pros and cons given to us. She has helped us choose informed healthy decisions for all of our animals treatment when it is more than just a check up. Because of our less than normal visits our routine check ups seems so laid back and boring. Our animals (3 dogs and 1 cat) all behave better than visits to any other clinics or vets. Even if we move out of state Met Vet will still continue to be our Vet. The clinic is cheery and clean without being overly sterile. Humane shelter cats are available for adoption and they are happy as clams there waiting for their forever homes. Location downtown and business hours are very accommodating for any one's schedule. I have terminated my relationship for my pets care (Keiko the Schipperke, Maggie the Aussie and Sparky the Cool Cat) after only a years experience with MetVet for two specific reasons. MetVet's hours of operation are too limited, especially for an emergency. I also wonder if the equipment they use for radiographs is operating correctly. My two major complaints are as follows: Due to an incident on 9/18/2015 I realized MetVet is not willing to step up to the plate in the case of a potential emergency. It appeared my Schipperke, Keiko, was stung by a bee on 9/18/2015 at Pt Defiance Park near Ft Nisqually (we are members of the Park Watch Team). I immediately called MetVet at 2:57pm and spoke with Patricia. I explained the situation and the fact that I was parked at the Zoo parking which meant jogging a long trail walk back to the car. Patricia told me to give her Benadryl and go to a emergency facility if Keiko reacted to the bee sting. I carried Keiko (10 lb dog) to reduce her activity level and slow down the speed which the venom would go through her body (Patricia did not offer this advise). We were home by 3:43 at which time I spoke with Patricia again and informed her that Keiko did not appear to have been stung despite the fact the bee was found under her stubby tail. I requested Keiko's entire Patient History upon terminating my relationship with MetVet. To my amazement Patricia incorrectly documented the "bee sting" event on 9/18/2015 - there is NO RECORD of my initial phone call which is when Patricia told me to go to an emergency facility. Patricia only recorded the second phone call at 3:43 with no comment about referring us to a emergency facility. MetVet was open until 5pm that day which clearly indicates MetVet is not willing to step up the the plate in the case of a client's possible emergency even if they MIGHT have to be there after 5pm. You are told to go elsewhere ! PRETTY PATHETIC. Patricia didn't document this event involving Keiko correctly so it makes one wonder how often pet information is deliberately recorded in error. I would recommend owner's request their pet(s) Patient History annually to review for obvious reasons. During our year long relationship with MetVet I became more and more displeased with Patricia's arrogance. I forwarded my phone record to Dr. Warren to substantiate that I, in fact, spoke with Patricia both at 2:57pm AND 3:43pm regarding the Keiko bee sting event. My 10 year old Aussie was needlessly put under anesthesia. On 2/18/2015 Maggie was under anesthesia for teeth cleaning and had 2 teeth extracted. When I picked up Maggie Dr. Warren told me she missed pulling a tooth which was stated also in Maggie's medical records that a tooth (no tooth number indicated) "displayed evidence of decay/resorptive lesion". When Maggie returned on 5/19/2015 to have that tooth removed and after she was put under anesthesia, the observation was reversed. The tooth "did not exhibit the pathology that was identified previously" was written in Maggie's records for the reason the tooth was not removed. MetVet records also state they "submitted dental radiographs to EVD for review". EVD has no record of correspondence regarding Maggie. Dr. Warren refused to provide emails answering these disparities regarding Maggie's dental journey after I reviewed my pets' records upon termination of relationship with MetVet. Putting any pet under anesthesia due to an obvious error in diagnosis is UNACCEPTABLE !! To the three individuals who though this review was funny - it won't be funny when you spend a lot of money for very poor services. Unless you do a records request for your pet(s) medical records you really don't know what the truth is regarding the health of your pet(s). It wouldn't surprise me that the "funny" responses was made by an employees of Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital ! You are entitled to your opinion but there is nothing funny about what is written in this review . . . . read more

I started taking my various and sundry kitty cats to Met Vet shortly after it opened when I learned that as a volunteer at the Humane Society I qualified for a discount. As good a reason as any to try a new vet. It's now nearly five years later and I've had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Warren and her staff. The facility itself is lovely, and is always immaculate and welcoming. The reception staff, techs and assistants have always been top notch, and then there's the doc. As a multiple cat owner and foster mom to shelter kittens, I've had many occasions to visit Met Vet. Without exception, I've been impressed with the quality of care and the sincere interest in whatever the issue of the day might be. These are devoted animal people who care equally for the animals and their owners. In an emergency situation with my kitty in renal failure, I was forced to see another vet on a weekend day when Met Vet was closed. They are a very reputable clinic, but the recommendation there was to put her down immediately. I was stunned and couldn't make that decision on such short notice, and sent Dr. Warren an email when I got home. We had an apointment with her the following Monday and I wanted to give her a heads-up. She immediately called from her home asking me to come over with the paperwork from the other clinic for her to review. After reviewing the information provided, she saw no reason for euthanizing Scooter and we discussed a couple of options. The bottom line is that my sweet kitty enjoyed another year of life under Dr. Warren's care. She was comfortable and happy until we knew it was finally her time. I will always be grateful to Dr. Warren for this. I can't imagine anyone else caring for my cats. She's an angel in a white lab coat. read more

Dr. Warren and her staff are extremely professional and friendly. They were able to see our cat within the hour of me calling. They were extremely gentle, patient, and worked with great precision as well. Our cat was initially terrified but seemed to calm down significantly during the visit. I love that Dr. Warren works with local artists and also helps some cats find homes, right there in the clinic. She is clearly passionate about being an advocate for animals and also supporting the community. We recently moved to Tacoma and were worried about finding a new vet whom we would feel we could trust. Now we don't have to worry. We will definitely be back to visit Dr. Warren. Our visit was one of the best veterinarian experiences we've ever had. read more

I brought my 14 year old kitty in to be tested a couple months back for kidney issues. Sure enough she wasn't well, and everyone at Met Vet was very kind to her and I. I felt the treatment offered was top quality. Perhaps more important to me was that when I made the choice to put her down rather than continue a sad life, everyone I encountered was sensitive and supportive. I'd heard horror stories about other vets pushing more (expensive) treatments when an owner has made that very difficult choice, and my experience here could not have been more different. They made it as smooth a process as possible and in turn helped me to feel more confident about my decision. I will absolutely come in again when I get a new pet. read more

Sad to say, I will be leaving this vets office. After years of great service, now they seem to be putting money before care of my new dog, à puppy. To say the least I was shocked. Oh well, there are other great vets in Tacoma, its this vets loss not mine, bye met vat, I never thot you would treat an animal nor human so cold but you have shown your cold side...your loss not mine because I have a wonderful pup you will never get to meet. read more

After looking at the reviews on Yelp, I decided to take my new large breed puppy to Metroplitan Veterinary Hospital. I initially loved how the vet techs are very friendly, and the facility is clean, and well-kept. The only thing that I disapproved of was Dr. Grey, and her lack of knowledge. I knew I couldn't continue going to a vet that I cannot trust. After several visits, I would leave the office frustrated with the advice she would give me, because it went against everything I had read, and talked to reputable breeders about. Trying to see her side, I would ask her to explain, and she couldn't do it, and just told me she was right. Not only was she unknowledgeable, and giving me bad advice, but she was very rude. I have since switched to a new vet who really knows her stuff, and could not believe the advice I had been given from Dr. Grey. Very disappointing. read more
