Our family's experience with North End Pet Hospital has been wonderful from the very start when we brought our kitten and adult cat in for their vaccines and routine check-ups. Everyone, from the office receptionists to Dr. Sarkez, has been very pleasant to work with. The staff take great care in ensuring their clients and pets are comfortable. Pricing for services is fair and well-detailed. Thank you, North End Pet Hospital, for your help and expertise in keeping our girls healthy!

Appointment confirmation received at the time of booking; no call or cancellation email was received prior to the appointment

Really struggled with these folks today. We recently moved and are looking for a new vet and this company continues to allow new patients to book online and do not call or email to let you know that they are not accepting new patients. We waited a few weeks for an appointment, with an online, written appointment confirmation, and was told, after arriving and traumatizing my cat by getting him in the car that they are not taking new patient appointments. They let me know that they called, but I have no missed calls or messages from their number, and no emails or appointment cancellations. The only proactive recommendation was to give me a list of vets in the area with the caveat that everyone is really busy, and I might need to wait several hours at a same day clinic, so good luck, and refused to speak to me anymore waving us to the door because folks were waiting in line behind us. While I appreciate the shortage of veterinary services, as a primary care medical provider myself, this is a waste of everyone's time and resources and my poor little guy is going to have to keep waiting, likely ill, until I can get him in someplace else. I've been trying not to clog up the emergency system as we haven't had a ton of red flags letting us know our cat needed to be seen immediately, but because we unnecessarily waited so long for primary care, we sadly may need to do that, putting extra pressure on an already strained system, and putting our little dude at higher risk for complications. My recommendation to this practice is to update their website indicating they are not taking new patients--this is a simple way to make sure that our situation doesn't happen to anyone else. I'm sure I'll get a response back stating they will take this under consideration, but I also hope they consider and respond to the impact they are having on pet owners and emergency vet care in the area.

My Shetland Sheepdog puppy's first visit with Dr. Nancy Vollmer.

Staff is great, Dr. Nancy Vollmer not so much. She was very Condescending, did not listen to what I said, and expected all puppies to react and behave the same, which I do not agree with. As a senior I have had a lot of experience with the sweet sensitive breed of Shelties. My puppy was terrified of her, but in the 6 days I have had her she was friendly, curious and socialized with everyone, happy to meet anyone. I said No Treats since she gets motion sick, but Dr. Vollmer continued to give her treats, even when I stated again No treats as I had only had her a short time and did not know about allergies, but knew no Turkey. Dr. Vollmer proceeded to open a drawer and take out multiple types of treats and give them again, ignoring what I said. Yes my puppy threw up on the way home. Dr. Vollmer refused to Microchip her until she was spayed at 6 mos.? as she said it was too painful without them being under anesthesia. I have always had my pets microchipped as a safety precaution, and none ever reacted in pain, including 8 wk. old kittens. I was very disappointed, frustrated and sad with Dr. Vollmer' s behavior. So many Vets have retired or closed I hoped she would be better. I will not subject my puppy to her again.

Great staff. Great service. Great vets! I've been going to North End Vet since 1995. I love this place because they actually care about their clients and their pets! My kitties don't enjoy it but I do!!

My fur babies that North End takes such good care of!

Although Dr. Oden gave my IRWS very good care, when she moved on I was flipped to the senior vet, then to a spanking new vet who had graduated just a few months before. On this occasion, my dog waited 25 minutes for the tech in a claustrophobic room without a mat or rug (new doc didn't like the mat and had removed it, I was told). The tech mentioned she had been helping a colleague clip nails and lost track of time. It wasn't an apology for her tardiness, just an aside. The 20ish vet came in masked, and when I went to shake his hand he told me he was sick. Since I am immuno-compromised, this was not a great start. After telling me my dog's heart and lungs sounded great, and her teeth were gorgeous, he lectured me about her weight (appropriate and some good info). He then began explaining how to handle geriatric dogs. I listen for a minute, confused, before saying, "She is 4." He said he had mixed her up with his previous patient. She was lightly sedated for the appointment as previous vets had recommended (anxiety!) but she was right in front of him, is AKC, and her g-g-grand father was a contestant at Westminster--in no way does she look grey, stiff, or snaggle-toothed. I then brought up anxiety medicines. I wanted a change due to tremors and stomach issues in reaction to fluoxetine. Doc was stumped. He did not know of another anti-anxiety med. He suggested the brand-name version of the same medicine. I said her reactions indicated we need to try another entire family of meds and suggested a couple my VetMD search had turned up. He said he would do some research and email me. This is bread-and-butter veterinary care for a city-vet in the 21c, but after all, he was new. He did email a couple of days later, and suggested the only other dog-approved anxiety med (lots of human drugs are used off-label) with a very long taper, due to concerns about life-threatening "serotonin syndrome." In this he was confused. Serotonin syndrome is a reaction to too much serotonin-increasing medication (such as a dose increase), not abrupt withdrawal. Abrupt withdrawal is not as serious, though uncomfortable (brain zaps), and is called "discontinuation syndrome." I did not correct him (I regret that), but told him I was familiar with serotonin syndrome and wouldn't risk my dog's health. Ignoring my statement that the tablets were scored and easy to cut, he called in unneeded smaller mg tablets of her original medication not once, but twice. I cancelled them. Since the dog was already getting her med only 40% of the time, and I am a VERY experienced dog owner AND married to a psychiatrist, I was able to write him sooner than he anticipated (three weeks) to say she was almost weaned off it and since I was doing my monthly Costco run the next weekend, it would be convenient if the med were called in so I could pick it up then. This sparked an ANGRY email from him berating me for endangering my dog. I am guessing he has never gone off an antidepressant personally; his five week taper might (?) have been textbook, but not necessary in this case. She had been carefully monitored and had had no negative symptoms. We were switching to a med in another class, so doubling up serotonin wasn't a concern. Nevertheless, he said he would NOT prescribe until the previously specified date 2 weeks on. I wrote very politely and said that that would be fine. It would be ok for her to wait, then I could see if she had out-grown the issues. Only he did NOT call it in. My dog spent a miserable Christmas month full of separation anxiety, reactiveness to other dogs and visitors, and fear during New Year fireworks. Two months after my visit on October 30, I returned to Chambers Creek, a clinic that I had used years ago for previous dogs, which incidentally charged 50% less for a visit. Not until this clinic had requested my current dog's records did Met Vet call-in the new medication to Costco. This was a horrible and avoidable experience for my dog. Over and over this new vet displayed his own lack of knowledge and experience and his lack of respect for me, my knowledge and experience, and my ability to care for my pet. Worst of all, he did not follow through on his promise to prescribe in a timely manner. As a result my dog was left unmedicated during the most stressful month of the year. This inexperienced doctor needs to be overseen carefully by senior doctors. Clearly, this oversight is missing. I am concerned for dogs who go to him for ordinary medical concerns, such as separation anxiety.

Every time we've had an appointment here someone has had an attitude with us, be it the doctor or a front desk employee. We stopped going for a while because Covid happened and Petsmart gave us a standing refill for our food. Petsmart after 4 years needed an updated prescription so we had to go back to a vet but money is tight and Commencement Bay was completely unwilling to help. When I called, the woman I spoke to was incredibly condescending the entire time. She judged us for not bringing him in without knowing circumstances, she rudely questioned how we were getting food and if we'd seen another vet (can't do that without the new vet getting my cats old records anyway), and they've also refused to change our cats name in the system from his previous name to his current one. Also, the assistants have always been great and helpful but when my cat has needed shots (he hates shots) he didn't do anything to try and relieve stress for our cat and just got mad and frustrated when the assistants who tried did exactly what vets are supposed to do. Super loving and calm. All I wanted was a one time refill until we could get in so my cat doesn't starve since he can't eat anything else. The receptionist refused to help, didn't care or show the slightest empathy, and just overall was awful. We're switching to Uptown Veterinary Hosptial in Gig Harbor where my other cats go and despite Commenment Bay's refusal to communicate with them, they gave us a one time refill like a compassionate vet would. I would rather pay a toll any day for kindness and compassion than have a quick drive to an unpleasant and unprofessional vet. I'm sure all these other great reviews are valid, but for some reason they've been less than great towards us. I don't know if it's because we're a gay couple or what but we're incredibly respectful and kind to them. We can't think of a single reason for the treatment we've received from them.
