Most educated and common sense people know you are supposed to tip any service type when you get. Don't be stupid folks - you always tip a waiter or waitress correct. I give my grass service guys water and food if I am home . Guess what - my grass looks great. So I had best deep tissue massage of my life. This was fourth. I was sore and felt like taking a nap afterward. Any person that would work on your back for an hour deserves a tip. Think about if you would even dream of rubbing your significant other for an hour for probably $10 without some type of payback. It is a business and the $60 all in was worth it. Don't judge a book by its cover. On the outside Avia looks suspect, but on the inside it is a romantic wonderland. Upon entrance, we were greeted by a pleasant, polite man at the front desk. After my partner and I made quick work of the "areas of needed care" forms, the man at the front desk offered us some champagne before heading into the room of bliss. Naturally, we obliged. The tasty, crisp beverage got us prepped and ready for an hour of pleasure. The room was laid out as if for a king and queen. Roses on each bed, light music playing in the background, dim mood lighting; the whole kit and kaboodle. As the massage began, I entered a world I had never been to; a quasi parallel universe. Did the Couples Massage here and it was pretty awesome. It's a very Asian Hole in the Wall place that is very calm and relaxing. Looks cheap and boring from the outside, but the inside of the building is beautiful. They give you a clipboard and paper work to fill out, including a diagram of the muscles of the human body. You circle the stress areas of your body and they customize your massage based on your input. They also take into consideration the firmness you desire and injuries you might of had recently. These people are not shy and will massage what feels like every nook and cranny. They do an amazing job massaging the head, neck, shoulders, hamstrings, calves and feet. The only part that was disappointing was that the Lower Back massage was too light and was too much elbow rubbing and not enough hand massaging, it left me wanting another lower back massage. The massage oil was heated up and felt warm, a very nice surprise as most of the previous massage places I've been to have had room temperature or below oils. The Couples Massage was fairly pricey. Do you know what today is? It's our anniversary... our anniversary!!! We chose to jump our anniversary celebration off with a couples massage... I have to say... very GOOD choice. We came to Avia (found on Yelp), first off we were a half hour late due to the race downtown but when we walked in (20 minutes after our appointment was scheduled) the man at the front desk greeted us and as we apologized, he told us not to worry about it :) How nice!!! We completed a brief survey about our bodies... ironically I was having some shoulder and neck pain so I indicated that on the survey. We walked in the room and there were two beds decorated with roses... what a great touch to celebrate our anni! The best massage we ever had! We have been travelling around the world and have had massages everywhere we went. This place is the best! the employee did excellent job for deep tissue massage. I always sore on my shoulder and neck. This place is the first place after massage that made me never feel sore for weeks! This spa is a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I first learned about this place on Groupon, and thought we'd give it a shot since the prices were so reasonable compared to other spas in the area. We were blown away! The staff was friendly and attentive, and the massages were absolutely impeccable. This spa isn't flashy like some others in North Indy... But that's one of the reasons I like it. The focus at this spa really is on the quality of the massage, as opposed to some other expensive, full-of-fluff spas in area. The massage therapists really know what they're what there doing, and they have never pressured me to buy their products at the end of my appointments, a rare thing in spa culture! I'm a frequent spa goer; I've gone to several spas all over the country (and the world), and Avia Spa is one of the best value spas I've been too. Bought the Couples Massage Groupon about a week ago and redeemed it early this week. After reading reviews I saw that people complained about having to book a "hot stone" massage in advance. I went ahead and called in advance to ensure that we would get the hot stone treatment. Upon arrival, my husband and I were a little worried from the aesthetics of the building. Once we got inside, we were pleasantly surprised! Clean and relaxed feeling. After being escorted to the room, the host was very nice and communicated clearly what we were to do. Then when I get inside it is extra $15 per person if we want them to do anything other than light touch Swedish. I elected to not pay the extra. I had requested 2 female therapists and they obviously only had 1 because they sent a man in to massage my partner. She was uncomfortable throughout because his hands kept creeping to areas that shouldn't have been touched in a legit massage. Definitely unable to relax during the massage. My husband and I had a groupon and got a couple's massage. We've had three massages before at the West Baden resort in French Lick and this was much better. I'm not sure why tipping would even be an issue. It seems pretty common sense that you would tip them about 20% anyway. As for another complaint about the music being weird - they played typical soothing spa music while we were there. Also read a complaint about the temperate of the room, but it was perfect when we were there and I am always cold. The blankets were warm. No complaints there. My only complaint was that she was a little rough on my back even though I indicated moderate on the sheet you fill out beforehand, but that's it. The massage was phenomenal and we both left feeling totally relaxed. Yes, they don't speak great English and it was a little difficult to understand them at times, but they were polite and kind. Just don't! So I took my friend here for her Christmas present. I spoke with someone on the phone before purchasing a groupon for the Couple's massage. I booked the Couple's massage with mimosas, strawberries, and separate rooms (since I was bringing a girl friend.) I also requested mine to be the hot stone massage which needs to be ordered in advance, while my friend just wanted the traditional swedish. This was booked three weeks in advance! I had been stuck in traffic and was running late, and while they were accommodating to me, they didn't provide my guest with any of the included refreshments or make her feel welcome. Once there, they had us in the same room when I very specifically reserved two separate rooms. They didn't have any knowledge of my reservation or requests. I had to ask for our mimosas, and they provided no strawberries. Then once situated, I reminded them that I had reserved a hot stone. I was informed that I needed to book this in advance. I did. More than three weeks! The owner then came in and repeated this, and I once again reminded them that I had made a reservation weeks ago. I then said if they couldn't do the hot stone, that I would accept the Aromatherapy, which was another option. The owner said he would see which they could do, and would let me know. I never saw him again until after the massages and my payment. They came in and just started two Swedish massages. I was so aggravated, I didn't even get to relax while there! Afterwards, when my guest left the room, someone came in to collect my credit card for the charges. She asked how much I wanted to leave for the tip. Given my experience in their salon, I told her an amount for each masseuse. She told me that it was not enough tip, and that they had worked hard. I explained that it was what I was comfortable with. She again pushed back and said I needed to give them more. I was appalled! I assertively told her to only list that tip amount on there that I was willing to provide. She said, "Ok next time, you can do more." I've worked in hospitality for 8 years and would NEVER, EVER say anything to someone about how much they want to TIP someone. On top of EVERY piece of my reservation being messed up? And I never even got an apology, let alone any other form of compensation. You will never see me in this building again! read more

My friend had never had a massage...what?! So, I arranged for both of us to have a full hour massage at Avia Spa. (This was my second time at this spa). The staff was incredibly kind and listened to all of our requests. My friend (who was very nervous to take on this adventure) stated, afterwards, that she LOVED IT and that she felt very comfortable and respected by the staff. She has asthma so she can not handle a lot of perfume type scents. The Avia staff was very careful with their choices in lotions/oils for the massage. They paid attention to her concerns. I pay with my credit card on the phone to make a reservation for a friend, and after two days I get charge again, so I called them and they said the charged was for the tips, I was so mad that they still had my credit card information on hand, and not hesitate to charge a second time. They said they'll fix it, and it's been more than a week and I still don't see my refund. I 'm thinking maybe they do not get pay for what they do or what is going on, but asking for more tips it's not very professional at all. Purchased a facial on Living Social and appointment was made for 2pm. Was called any hour before to change appointment to 2:30pm which I did. When I arrived I waited until 2:50 to be put in a room. The receptionist told me to take 3-5 minutes to relax. I laid on the table for another 20 minutes and noone came in. Looked outside the door and noone was around. Waited another 5 minutes and came out to the reception area and there was another customer waiting. She had to knock on a door to have someone come out. I think because of their somewhat obscure location, they are forced to charge less than the average spa for their services, when they totally shouldn't. I have several physical hindrances (which I wont bore you with the details ... I swear) that while i am able to manage cleanliness that is about the extent of it. Exfoliation is not something I can handle and as well all know that can create issues of its own. I happened upon a Living Social mention of their facilities and went to their website. The website gives you a tour of the facilities so you have a good representation ambiance and hygiene. Their services are conveniently listed and if you need something special or a combination of services they are very willing to provide exactly what you need not just the packages they offer. They offer both high and low tech services which was very cool. The hours of operation are so there is no way you can't get any appointment to fit your schedule. I have been a spa fiend for decades and I can't say that I have ever seen this level of availability that wasn't associated with a cruise or hotel. Whether or not you have a voucher of some kind the prices are reasonable at the outset but once you have received the service no matter how much you paid you know you have received a bargain. I arrived and filled out the usual forms. Then, I had a consultation which included what I was trying to achieve with the services I requested. I was offered additional options and educated regarding the conditions I was attempting to manage. I know I said I was going to bore you with my medical details but I will say talking about them was a humiliating and embarrassing prospect but all the personnel I encountered made me feel comfortable and relaxed. In the end, I felt amazing. My skin was as I hoped it would be. Some pain I had when I walked in was gone. I felt cleaner than I have in longer than you want to know. I have a big hygiene thing and so that was just an enormous relief. Bottom line, the staff is polite, attentive and professional; just a delight to interact with on all levels. The facilities are calming and tastefully appointed. The massage table itself is heated so no first entry cold sheet shock. The covering blanket is an amazing soft Sherpa style microfiber. There were no off notes in this well of both maintenance, indulgence and pampering. Things we all need from time to time. By the by, they do have a monthly wellness package which makes it even more practical to treat yourself better. read more

Pros: The lobby and decor were warm and inviting. Warm sheets and blanket on the table were much appreciated. Have a client form to fill out with pertinent medical history, problem areas, etc. Very polite and long hours. Reasonable rates. Masseuse did very well with facial and scalp massages. Cons: Staff speaks limited English, which makes it difficult to communicate. Masseuse used her elbows to dig at my spine and hips, which was painful. Even after I expressed (told) the masseuse that was painful, she continued with very little change. She also tried to massage my feet, even though I specifically stated on my intake sheet that my feet were off-limits. She didn't seem completely professional, as she pulled my underwear down to tuck in the towel, partially exposing my buttocks. Overall opinion: I will not be back. I will not recommend Avia Spa to my friends or family. I drove home in pain, feeling like I have a bruised kidney. I will wait until tomorrow to see if I have any bruising. Update: I forgot to update after a few days. I ended up with bruising ALL OVER my back! I couldn't even sleep the first night, and I couldn't lay on my back at all for a week! I rolled onto my back in my sleep once and woke up screaming and crying from the pain. I couldn't even move my arms enough to roll over, so my husband had to help me. Showering was painful, and I could barely pick up my daughter during the day. My muscles were so sore...I definitely would not recommend massages here. I even went to the doctor to be sure I wasn't seriously injured. He basically said that my muscles were pretty badly bruised and that I should ice my back and take ibuprofen to help with the inflammation. So, I went bra-less for a few days, slept sitting up for a couple weeks, and regretted my massage (still do). I'd like to eventually get a massage elsewhere, but, because of this experience, I've been afraid to get one. read more

I've had a few massages recently on my hunt for a new spa for regular massages and I think I found it! Mary and Lingh took great care of us, they were professional and very attentive. This spa appears to pay attention to detail using hot oils and warm towels during the experience which is a bonus in my book.The atmosphere was very warm and inviting, mellow music, not too overbearing aromas, and proper lighting. Furthermore, the decor was very pleasing to the eye, we both agreed that this is what we look for when wanting a spa experience. Additionally, we both tend to be cold natured at times and the room as well as the massage table was nice and toasty the entire time. I purchased a Groupon as a gift for my husband. I made an appointment to have this used on Saturday 5/31/2014 at 3pm. The shop called me at 2pm to tell me that they would need to reschedule. I rescheduled with them for 1130am on 6/1/2014 (this was the time they suggested). When my husband went in to get his massage the people were extremely rude!! The woman even bitched at him because she felt he did not tip her enough!!! First of all he did not know what the full value of the massage was and therefore did not know what to tip her and a tip is just that...a gratuity and not payment. My husband left that shop feeling worse then when he walked in because of the poor treatment. This was my first time visiting Avia for a message. I received a discount for being a new customer totaling $49.99. When I walked in they asked me to fill out some paperwork which is typical when getting a message. I requested to have a medium to firm pressured message and the masseuse wasn't messing around. I'm not sure if she got my papers mixed up with someone else, but I'm pretty sure the tiny bodied girl was giving it all she had. It was too firm at times and I'm worried about bruises now! Ha! It's my mistake for not telling her to lighten up the pressure, but I totally should have. The bed was also very cold and at one point she took the blanket off of me completely. The room was bare and the music was very quite. There were a lot of outside noises; people hitting the wall next to my room, doors slamming, strange squeezing noises the entire time. I must say, I feel better than I did before my appointment, but I was expecting more of a spa like environment. I probably wouldn't recommend this place to my friends or family.
