Coming back to leave a review after the return process. The return was very easy but they did not give any confidence in the process or communicate. We pulled right in and there was a small trash and recycling station to throw things out. The agent said almost nothing to us and went around to take photos of damage. I had to confirm with him that all the damage was from when we picked up (and there was quite a bit of it). Only then did he say he saw the notes from the pick up. I booked through Expedia and didn't think twice. Huge mistake. I paid $1100 for a suburban for 8 days and figured it was a reputable company and didn't research additionally. I read the requirements online and figured I would get the Amex car rental coverage to protect myself on the rental. After arriving to the airport the staff was very friendly. They shuttled us off site to the rental location and after a red eye flight and needing to get the kids out of the heat I was told there Is a MANDATORY INSURANCE for "premium" vehicles. The original quote was $150 per day. I balked and was upset. I didn't want to make a scene but the total price was ridiculous. They offered a smaller vehicle with no luggage space to save the mandatory fee. Bath and switch. The agent was polite. Not rude or pushy about the situation. And I understand he was doing his job. They reduced the fee... but I still ended up paying almost double. I didn't want it to ruin my trip to Cancun... but I would strongly advise another agency. Oh.... This is by far the worst experience of all our vacations. Not rental cars. WORST VACATION EXPERIENCE. Rent from here if you want to ruin your vacation plans. We have rented cars for every vacation for the last 5 years, and this is the only time the car WOULD NOT START. We did not leave the light on overnight, we did not do anything out of the ordinary. We call AVIS to fix the car. We call EVERY SINGLE NUMBER in Spanish and English and NO ONE PICKS UP. We literally press a number and the PHONE HANGS UP. We call AVIS USA and they say they can't help, we have to contact AVIS in Mexico. We even went to the AVIS website and tried to Chat and got nobody. Imagine having plans on your vacation and the car is parked in the hot sun, 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or 32 degrees Celsius, and you spend half an hour trying to get your car to start. Luckily, we parked at a hotel. Imagine if we parked at a beautiful beach, cenote, jungle. It would be a nightmare. The hotel concierge helped us dial in Spanish, but no one answered. We ended up renting another car from the hotel lobby, Alamo, because there was no other option. We have no idea how to return the car. AVIS please fix this. We have never had a car break down before. Please refund everything, and pay for the cost of our other rental car. If we need to hire a local car service to fix the car, please for that too. read more

Cancun Avis is trash and they offer you deals at the airport but when you go to get the car or even return it, they say "that's not their deals" and "they don't do that". Then threaten to charge more if we don't do it their way... Worst experience I ever had and I would never do business with this company again! BUT if you do decide to go with this company still, make sure to take your own pictures of the car and if you see any scratches or paint chipping TAKE PICTURES because they tried to blame us for damages that were already there but thankfully I did take a video and you can clearly see it was there before. I would not even give Avis Cancun a one star! We travelled in February and it was awful service from the start! There was no one at the desk in the airport or answering phones, when we finally got there our jeep was not there that we had paid for. We were given a MG and told me would have our jeep in the morning but we were forced to pay the platinum insurance from the next day as the jeep was arriving. We got the contact number as the woman was very vague with plans which was suspicious. We were calling and messaging the next day with no clear communication mostly not answering us. On day two we went to the Tulum office to complain, they called them and advised us it would come the next day, they had all of our details were we were staying etc. Of course it did not arrive we were calling and texting again then on the third day we went back to Avis Tulum and they said they had the jeep however we were not contacted, by this time we had paid for 2 days of insurance that we didn't need 125 usd per day fyi! The jeep was also dirty and had 3/4 petrol. When returning the jeep there was a big argument about discounts and price differences as they had said we would receive one over the phone. They had also charged 78 usd for petrol! Originally they say 140 usd discount which covers nothing I wanted at least the 250 for extra insurance plus the petrol they had added on. After at least one hour they offered 220 usd and we had to catch a flight so could not stay any longer. They said we can continue with customer service at home, this was just to fob us off as customer service claim to do an investigation but have come back with nothing! DO NOT BOOK HERE IT COULD RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY THEY ARE CON ARTISTS! read more

Beware of secret fees (not talking about insurance) When I dropped off my four day rental I noticed approximately $50USD of extra fees I did not agree to. They were the following in pesos: Adventure Bag Rental 100 pesos per day Roadside Assitance Fee 76.87 pesos per day Cuota Para Transacción (not normal taxes) Around 90 pesos per day. The front desk agents were very defensive when I disputed these fees, which do not appear anywhere on the Terms and Conditions of Avis Mexico's website. They acknowledged that the "aventure bag" was not something they normally have but it was required in the daily rate. They said the same about the roadside assistance, that it was a mandatory fee but again it does not appear on the Avis Mexico website as such and even the agents did not know what the "Cuota" fee was for. There was not transparency in the insurance policy and the deposit needed for the car was not the same between agents. One agent said we needed to get at the very least liability even though we purchased additional insurance through Expedia. One agent said the liability insurance was $25 a day plus a $5000 deposit, another agent told us the deposit was $4000 and the last agent told us the deposit for liability would be $2000. The whole experience made us want to walk away but my wife convinced me to go through with it since we already paid for the rental through Expedia. After all of this, when we returned the car, they charged us a $250 cleaning fee because the outside of the car was dirty. The agent did not tell us that we had to keep the outside of the car spotless or we would be charged. We drove on dirt roads to Tulum and it rained everyday so the car was dirty which I felt was to be expected. I am very disappointed in the service, lack of transparency, price gouging and unethical business practices. You will not be getting my business or anyone I know because I will share my experience so that no one gets taken like this. read more

Avis Cancun is good, but I don't trust them. * The Good. The folks at kiosk in the terminal are very nice, they are personable and quickly score you to the rental place in terminal 2. They make the process really easy. They are not very pushy with coverage. Small cars are decent and clean. They make it clear what to do in case of issues and tell you to return it with a full talk. The drop off process is super easy. No after rental fees. * The Bad. The US website will sometimes tell you that only certain cars are available and usually are at a higher price while the MX website has all types of economic options. The rental employees struggle with the rental software and sometimes take a long time to get your car. The ladies quickly try to get you in the car without inspecting it. * My recommendations. Please take photos of the car and document everything, even if it seems petty, a scratch could cost you $1,000 dollars. The scheme seems to work this way: 1. The folks at the kiosk appear to be kind and gentle to ease you into the experience. 2. The rental place employees will try to upsell you, but do your research on what your credit card offers. 3.BEWARE. After the rental contract is processed they send over over to a desk in the same tiny office, the woman there is very annoying and quickly tries to get your family inside the car and go, she did not mentioned there's a car inspection until I asked for one! 4. I think this system is designed to get you feeling like is a trusted placed but they are waiting for you to slip. * Conclusion. Avis is the most decent but has some predatory practices, just know how to survive and get out of there without paying an arm and leg. I wish things were straight forward and honest , trust me when you arrive at the airport the car rental place is empty because these rental car companies suck so much that tourist rather stay locked up in a stupid resort. I was promised a 5 day rental rate and return time for a set price. The desk clerk confirmed that price and timeline then only wrote the rental for 4 days which I failed to catch at 0130a. They charged me extra when I returned the car after the 5 days. When I tried to resolve the issue at the store they kicked me out and told me to leave. There is a reason all the car rental companies in Mexico are rated below a 6. Even if you do all the due diligence they will still over charge and there will be nothing you can do. Our car was returned with a full tank and immaculate. It was rainy season so of course there was residue from the storm on the car and remnants of sand from the beach. That is expected for a two week rental. I have never heard of a hotel charging to clean a room you rented. Just silly. They charged us a $250 cleaning fee. I guess they refuse to clean their own cars unless you pay them. I don't even know any car cleaning that charges $250. It's just an excuse for them to steal more money. The worst experience renting a car with AVIS Cancun Mexico. Stay away from these folks, they're a rip off. The added insurance ranged from $500-$700 for my 11 day stay in Cancun. This was more than the actual rental of the car. I left and tried cancelling my reservation as I told them that their insurance prices were ridiculous. I walked out and down a couple of blocks to Alamo Rent a Car and what a difference. The full coverage for the same car and 11 days was only $150. When it was time to make the change, OF COURSE they said that they would not honor even though I wrote down the name of the person, along with the date and time yet they did not care. Ultimately, we returned and asked for a refund. During checkout the car was quickly handed off to us, we took pictures and video and asked them to mark ALL DAMAGES even the smallest thing....upon return GLAD I READ COMMENTS BEFORE...they check the car throughly...in our case 4 times. It was almost as though they were looking for anything to hold our credit card... IT TAKES 4 days for them to release your credit card hold, if not longer. I actually had to call my credit card company and emailed the receipt for them to release my funds and book another car. AVIS cancun definitely lost a customer and I am definitely sharing my story with anyone who wants to avoid a headache. Tip: AMERICA CAR RENTAL was excellent, insurance is included ON EVERY RENTAL and they do not try and sell you anything extra. I write this review from the perspective of a US tourist as well as from the perspective of a former Avis employee. Overall, I had a professional experience here. The staff is multilingual - so I was assisted by a Spanish/English speaker. He was great. There is the typical Preferred line but it doesn't make that much of a difference. Remember, folks, corporations have different markets. Each market is unique. Its like getting salsa verde with your chicken nuggets from the McDonalds in Cancun instead of bbq sauce. Get over it. Avis' rates are much higher than the rest in the area and, yes, there is the additional insurance. I had a frank conversation with him. Why so much? Overall, the quality of the cars are better here than the other, cheaper ones. Also, the insurance that you could get covers EVERYTHING. I intended to drive to Chichen Itza from the hotel zone. There is a chance of getting scratches and dings that the car agencies will charge you for. Also, if you get a flat, good luck! Avis will cover that too. I also checked with my credit card, the additional coverage they typically supply for rentals didn't apply to Mexico. Looking at it that way and comparing how much I would spend on a similar rental at JFK (where I used to work) it wasn't much of a rip off or a scam after all. It would have been more expensive for a transfer service and I didn't feel like getting scammed later, so I was down. Overall, it worked out. I had a choice of cars and ended up with a beauty that just rolled into the lot with 24 km on it. Car was clean, shiny, gassed up, and worked fine. Returning was pretty easy as well. Avis Preferred member here and this is by far the worst experience that I've had with Avis in a long time. Not only did I have to wait almost 30 minutes to get my car (usually the car is ready to drive off the lot), but the ticket agent told me that I had to get liability insurance otherwise I could be arrested by the police if they stop me. Obviously no one wants to go to Mexican prison while on vacation, so after trying to check with my credit card company and insurance (with spotty service and time zone differences), I opted for the insurance. I was ready to go on vacation. I come later to find out that I didn't need the insurance, and emailed Avis customer service to see if I could have that amount reversed. I didn't think it was appropriate to be manipulated into the upsell especially with the threat of jail time if I don't. They went on further to say that Avis branch is privately owned and while they "do not doubt [my] veracity" of being manipulated, I've signed the document and they wont do anything about it. I usually try to pick larger American companies when I travel abroad to prevent being taken advantage of and expect them to stand behind their product.
