I reserved a minivan for a family trip. We got in late at night The Avis counter acknowledged my reservation and downgraded my car to something less. I needed a minivan for my business needs. I was told that the car I got was a minivan. It was a crossover with no room for my business. They charged me minivan rates and gave me a small car. I had to rent a minivan from another company. When I returned the car, Avis was all ready and willing to give me a minivan because cancelled a 14 day rental. Avis is horrible. They bait and switch. They waste your time. Bait and switch! Price gauging! Rateros (thieves)! I Booked a 1 week rental via Expedia and received an estimated $350ish price total for the week. This was separate from the $100 liability insurance I bought via Expedia (total waste since Avis Cancun does not honor any insurance they do not sell onsite). Well, after high pressure sale tactics and secretive conversations amongst the workers about the cost of full coverage insurance, I ended up paying $1080 for my car rental for 9 days, which is about $120 a day!! If it wasn't for having a tired, hungry and peed on toddler, I would have just taken a taxi to my hotel and tried to find something cheaper. We had a parking violation in Playa del Carmen and our car got taken away by the police. We paid the parking fee the next morning and Avis should have been there to pick up the car because they are the owners. They haven't picked up the car until we returned back to the US. They told us the ownership certificates are in another city. We now believe that they didn't have the ownership certificates in the first place and defrauded us. Do not rent with this company. Worst experience ever. We had a paid reservation upon arrival, but that didn't matter to them. We had to make a new reservation and pay an extra $560 dollars, so we lost the money from our past reservation. Upon return of the vehicle, matters were not much better either. We misplaced a $3 dollar plastic case that they provided, and made us pay $60 dollars for it even though we had full coverage policy. read more

Service was very slow. Waited in line for almost 2 hours until I was helped and there was only 5 people ahead of me. Then they gave my car that I had reserved to a customer that was just ahead of me. They told me to come back tomorrow to exchange vehicles, I checked online to see if they had any new vehicles and it showed they did, I called to confirm but they wouldn't answer. I drove 40 min out of my way there anyways but they had nothing to offer, the website was false and did not have any of the vehicles advertised AGAIN. It's a shame because I've been a valued Avis customer for years and I've never complained, other locations have been more helpful and accommodating. By far the worst run Avis are in Mexico. Cancun avis airport is even worse then most. The service is slow, the employees just sit around with hundreds of people waiting to pick up their cars. I'm fairly new to the Avis Preferred member program. Based on my recent rental, they still have failed to impress me in any way. Our recent rental was at their Cancun, Mexico International Airport location. Upon arrival at their location, I was unable to pick up a car from a preferred lot as offered at some of their other locations. Instead I had to interact with a reservation agent. And these interactions always surprise me for the length of time they take, when they ALREADY have all of my details that I entered online. They then proceeded to hound me to buy their protection plans and insurance multiple times even though my insurance already covers me. They finally brought the mid-sized SUV around for us to pick up. Again, another sales person tried to sell us their insurance plans and also sell us a vacation discount or something. The SUV was a Renault Duster. It was very disappointing to drive. It was poorly maintained with many noticeable dings and scratches on the body and windshield. It also had several broken interior fixtures like the AC Vent grilles and the lever to open the fuel tank door. The car rode just terribly as if the shocks/suspension were broken--every bounce produced a knocking sound. The car's remote did not work when attempting to unlock the car either. In the end they charged me for fuel even though I couldn't open the fuel door myself. Overall, I suggest considering another rental agency if you plan to visit Cancun and avoid the Renault brand of vehicle too. read more

I was literally robbed by this place. This office stole from me. They charged me $200 for a tiny ding in the hood that was already there when I rented it but the person that handed me the keys failed to mark or make a note of it when i picked it up, so when i turned the car in they decided to charge me. I got the rental through Booking.com, but Please avoid Avis in Cancun. But if you must, please make sure you take really good pictures of every angle, and even then, they will still try to rip you off. The tiny ding they called out was barely even noticeable in the daytime and that is why they failed to call it out when i picked the vehicle up at nighttime. They have a big scam going on here, they try to sell you protection even when they see you already purchased protection from a third party, they try to tell you they wont honor it. And then when they see you have protection with a third party, they see it as an opportunity to charge for fake damages because they know the third party will cover it. The worst part is that the rep who assisted me when i returned the car told me that he agreed they overlooked the dent the first time and that they would not charge me for it. But a month later they charge my credit card and they email me an invoice and it doesnt even say why they are charging me. They just send me the same invoice showing the car is in good condition. They werent charging me for damages but instead they were simply double charging me. I call them and tell them I paid my full charge with Booking.com and thats when they switched their story and said they were actually charging me for damage instead, and that i should contact the third party protection because im covered. Luckily booking.com was able to refund me but i really wish Booking.com would just no longer do any business with Avis office in Cancun, as it is full of low life thieving scumbags. read more

0 - ZERO Beware of ERIC SOLICE. He dealt with my rental and return. Yes they upsell the insurance packages that's fine. Nothing is really clear, your questions are avoided especially if you do not speak the Spanish language. Took the 2nd highest level of cover $314 for the 10 day period plus a $300 hold which would then be returned. Upon my return the car was checked by a young lady was dealing with me, car checked no problems. They then couldn't find my paperwork and proceeded to use my copy of MY paperwork. Lots of confusion, suddenly ERIC SOLICE appears and talks this young lady through my return in Spanish. She could not, when asked produce receipts for return of the $300 hold or the final $314 charged, even though I just gave her my card to charge. They insisted MY copy of the paperwork was my receipt. Very dodgy, I knew I was being ripped off to my face. Got home to have been charged £460! British Pounds! Which is a lot more than $314! I am now faced with chasing this up through AVIS customer care from here. Cancun Airport Avis gives an awful first and last impression of Mexico and Mexican service standards. AVOID! It's really a shame that you can't rely on notable rental brands for a minimum level of service. This place is a total shakedown. They will pressure and scare you into buying insurance and when you return they will look over the car with a microscope to charge you for normal wear and tear. The car we got was old and beaten up and just when we thought we had checked everything, we missed the tires (which, of course, is not covered by any insurance). Ok here's the scam: The guy at the Avis desk (outside of baggage) gives you a price for the car that includes the necessary insurance. Then you get bussed to pick up your car with a scrap piece of paper with the price. Once you get to the main office with the cars the price goes up an additional 25% with what you agreed with the guy at the airport. Most people pay it but we went through the hassle of making our way back to another rental agency at the airport. For fun I went back to the desk to call out the guy for flat out lying. He was shocked and had that caught look on his face. He ended up running away because I made a much deserved scene. Lesson is book on a site like Expedia and pay no more than 6 dollars per day for liability insurance. I spoke to her in several occasions asking about price and extension for one more day. Erika had multiple opportunities to clearly explain to me the timeframe of when the car needed to be turned in. If I could give zero stars I would. They added on additional liability insurance which I did not request. They also added another $50 in random fees, which were not on the original reservation (which said "includes all taxes and fees"). This all nearly doubled the price of the quoted rental. Everything went smoothly for my friend and me. We booked in advance with rentalcars.com and declined the insurance because of our Chase Sapphire card. The deposit on our credit card was ~$2000 USD but we knew this was coming in advance based on reading prior reviews. They were very open and transparent and did not try to scheme us out of any other money. Car was modern and worked well. Avis was slightly more expensive than some of the other places with even more horrendous reviews so I would avoid those (but it was still very cheap). Would totally use Avis again. read more

I had two separate experiences with this Avis The great experience: after an extremely stressful early morning getting to the airport from Playa Del Carmen, I dropped my car off and headed to the terminal on the shuttle. This was timely and efficient. When I got to the terminal I realized that I had left my brand new iPhone in the rental car but I only had an hour before my International flight so I was on a time crunch. Because it was so early, there was nobody else to take me back to Avis and I was faced with the decision to run there from the terminal and risk missing my flight or to leave my phone in MX. I went back inside to ask my boyfriend to run back with me when I saw an Avis employee walking up behind him. It was the guy who cleans out the cars after their return and he had my phone in his hand!! He wasted no time getting it back to me even though many may have been tempted to hide the phone and sell it for personal gain. I was SO grateful and wish I had gotten the name of this employee to send a direct compliment to his manager. What this review is about is an DANGEROUS scam among the staff running a "private car service" amongst their friends. We returned our car the day before our flight as we were staying in a hotel and just wanted to get a taxi direct to the airport the next morning early. Asked Avis employee to call a taxi for us to shuttle us back to our hotel. He drove us to a shuttle zone and dropped us off to a "co-worker" of his... The "co-worker"( no uniform, no Avis or car service credentials) gave us an 3 options: wait 2 hours for the shuttle($34usd per person), walk BACK TO THE AIRPORT TAXI ZONE(free but total bullshit) or pay for the private car service($55 for one ride). We ended up paying for car service like fools and took a seriously dangerous and unsafe ride back to our hotel. The "driver" drove in the wrong direction and I had to yell at him in Spanish because when I said in English"wrong direction", he replied " no Hablo ingles." Legit worried my girlfriend and I for a minute were going to be kidnapped. Don't go to this car service, DON'T let them call you a car and FUCK THIS PLACE. It's all a scam. I reserved and pre-paid for my Avis rental car in Cancun. When we arrived to pick up the car, we were met by a friendly, but didn't speak english clearly, agent who had us sign paperwork to get the car. We stated we already pre-paid, had proof of insurance etc. He said 'yah, yah, sign here' so we did. When we returned the car we were charged another couple of hundred dollars because we signed for "extras" when we came in. We did NOT get any extras, we got exactly what I reserved. We disputed it but they since we signed for it's legally binding. Ok, so maybe we signed it but they were intentionally confusing and deceitful, tricking us to sign on for "extra". I am not OK with this and will NOT use AVIS again since the corporate office failed to resolve. Do not fall in to the Mexico trap of "yah, yah of course, sign here". After we got the shuttled over to rent the car the guy told us the insurance wasn't included Wtf the lady at the terminal said it was all included with the price she quoted us. At this point we've had all our luggage shuttled over and after waiting in line for awhile there was no way I was gonna waste more time getting shuttled back because they decided to add an extra $30 a day. Shady shady shady business practice. They then Issued us with a "complimentary " WiFi with half the battery life and yet to find out it didn't charge in the car either . So we were lucky to get to our hotel the first night but since the WiFi didn't charge we had to figure out directions on our own with no WiFi. A vehicle was reserved for one week in May 2017. Upon arriving in Cancun we were quickly picked up by the Avis shuttle and taken to the rental location. This was the only one of the two positive experiences. We waited in the office for at least 20 minutes before being assisted as the service was dreadfully slow. Upon giving them our confirmation number we had to wait even longer for them to pull up the reservation. It was then explained to us that we declined the optional insurances and that we wouldn't be allowed to take a vehicle unless we agreed to take the "minimum insurance" package. This minimum insurance package ended up costing $200.00 more and though we explained that we had personal auto coverage in Canada AND our credit card provided insurance, they refused to honour our reservation unless we took the additional, optional coverage. Under duress we agreed and were told we could deal with it with Avis once we got back to Canada. In total it took 45 minutes between walking into the office and walking out to get our vehicle. We did get the vehicle we reserved (a Renault Duster) but were absolutely shocked to see the condition of the vehicle. It was covered in scratches, dents, and two cracks in the bumper. To add to the sleaziness of the insurance situation we were then "hurried" to get into the vehicle without doing a proper check. I spent 5 minutes walking around the vehicle until the entire pre-rental damage report was circled as to ensure every small piece of existing damage was noted. I have no doubt that had we not went around and demanded the damages be marked that we would be responsible for "damages" upon returning the vehicle. We had an uneventful week with the rental and upon return they didn't charge anything extra - this was positive. However, we have now had to open a dispute with Visa against Avis due to the fact that Avis would not refund the additional optional insurances because we "agreed" to them by signing the contract. It was explained multiple times that we only signed off of these contracts under duress otherwise we would have otherwise been stranded. It's clear to me that this is a scam for which I am sure Avis US/Canada is aware of but could care less to do anything about. AVIS at the Cancun Airport is a shake down artist. I received an online quote for $425 and upon returning the jeep they smacked me with a $1043 bill!!! After showing them my online quote and watching the manager waste 15 minutes doing nothing I was basically forced to sign the receipt to get transportation to our flight. We went to Cancun for vacation during the 1st week of September. I did a lot of research on car rentals in Cancun and was very afraid after reading all the negative comments online. So basically, this review is from a Canadian family's perspective who has never been to Cancun before. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! I cant stress that enough. Me and my family decided to visit Cancun but see the sights and sounds rather than being cooped up on a resort. We rented a condo right on the beach in Cancun through Air BnB. We rented a Chrysler Town & Country from Avis. After reading all these negative reviews, I had my guard up the entire time during the rental process. Heres how it works. You walk out of the airport and you get bombarded by agents of rental companies. We had made an AVIS reservation along with a budget reservation through expedia. Spoke to a guy who was wearing an Avis shirt, sent me to the avis bus outside (mercedes Sprinter with full AC), the driver helped us with our luggage and gave us water. He then drove us to the avis office which is about 5 minutes from the airport. Now mind you we had AMEX, MasterCards, Visas with tonnes of car insurance. But we did not trust the credit card coverage to cover us in case we got into an accident. We read a lot (I MEAN A LOT) of reviews and people say that in Mexico, they dont care about your credit card insurance. The police only care about seeing actual insurance in front of them during a crisis. As such, we took the LIABILITY INSURANCE and paid a deposit which was held through the credit card. So we got a great deal on the van in my opinion. It helps to bargain. We got a clean van, no noises, AC worked great, it had tinted windows and automatic sliding doors with a deep trunk space for our luggage. Overall, our trip worked out great and we went to some exciting places such as Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Cancun city the underground caves, etc. We had a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country. read more

If you are anything like me you are feeling overwhelmed with all the contradicting reviews regarding renting a car in Cancun despite all the research that you have done. Let me begin with the fact that I am an Avis preferred member and I rent from Avis here in the US at least once a month, however this Avis franchise in Cancun is nothing like Avis here in the US. Before going with Avis I did TONS and I mean TONS of research regarding rental car companies in Cancun. I was pretty close to going with another local rental company that is pretty famous in forums that discuss rental car companies in Cancun however after giving them a call I got really bad service and a weird vibe from them because the price they gave through the phone was very different from their online site. I ended up going with Avis because I assumed that they were going to be more reputable and my chances of getting ripped off were smaller. I was wrong. I booked it online and it showed that my price was going to be $82 for two days plus insurance (which has to be selected at the counter), afterwards I received a confirmation email that showed my price of $82 and a disclosure saying that this price was subject to change at the pickup counter. This was my first red flag. Once we got to Cancun a small shuttle picked us up from the airport and took us to the Avis location. First thing the lady at the counter mentioned was "You need all the insurance we offer in order to drive in Mexico". Which I know was not true, I mentioned her that I was already covered thanks to my American Express Platinum and I only needed the "danos a terceros insurance" (which is actually the only insurance you need). She insisted on selling me the whole insurance package and even said that AMEX doesn't cover rental cars in Mexico and to give them (AMEX) a call and she would wait for me. I firmly replied "I already did and they will cover my rental car in Mexico". After that she stopped insisting and supposedly only added the insurance I asked, however my price jumped from $82 to $187 which according to her was because of the "airport tax" that the airport charges them for being on-site (later I noticed she added other insurances as well). She then proceeded to give me a HUGE receipt which was literally about 20" inches long that included all terms and conditions. On the way out there is a small counter that gives you "free maps", just ignore him. He is trying to give you a time-share pitch. The car was alright, it was a Nissan Sentra that was pretty dinged up. Once you get the car and before you get the car keys make sure you: - Take pictures of the car including all dents and bumps - Make sure the guy that gives you the car keys notes the dents as well - Check that the spare tire is there I honestly don't know if there is a good rental company in Cancun, however next time I am there I will take my chances and try a rental company that is off the airport area to avoid the "airport tax". Hopefully this long review help clear things up for you, good luck. **Tip: If you go with Avis ask for the "tarjeton turistico" at the counter, which is pretty much a "Get out of jail" pass for traffic tickets, it's free. read more

We recently rented a car from them for a week, when we returned it to them at the airport they claimed we had damaged the car (we had not, and had photographic evidence). They told me that the vehicle was available but I had to make a new reservation costing me three times more than the original reservation. The clerk doing my booking was not part of the CORRUPTION SCHEME and she proceeded to book with a lower pricing provided by the system. The salesman noticed it and he called her back to the office. She came back stating that i had agreed to a different pricing and that she needed to charge me more. I told her you already processed my credit card and she went back to discuss with the manager. We walked here after having an atrocious experience trying to pick up our car down the road at Dollar. We walked away from our reservation there due to the price doubling and poor customer service. At Avis, we were given a discount at the counter from the posted rates when we showed them the reservation from Dollar and quoted amount from them. The car (Nissan) had some minor scratches and dings but was clean and in good working order for our road trip through the Yucatan. We were not interrogated about any of the damage afterwards when we returned the car. They saw the dings, looked at the paperwork, and moved on. The GPS was worthless... but when we pointed it out upon returning the car, they refunded what was charged without hesitation. The customer service was excellent and we were treated very well in a situation where we had absolutely no reservation or guaranteed price whatsoever. read more

Renting from Avis in the US is not the same as renting in Mexico. The car worked. It had minor scratches and bumps on the exterior. It was clean. The employees working the rental desk either do not know how to do their jobs and are constantly figuring out how to do every simple task or are purposefully slow and unhelpful. They appear to be more interested in making you wait perhaps so you'll be tired when it comes time to turn down the extra insurance and worthless tourist trips. If you rent from Avis in Cancun, which I recommend you do not, steel yourself for at least a half hour ordeal of hucksters selling you worthless nonsense before you ever get to your car. Scam, scam, scam, stay away and go rent somewhere else! Our credit card got stolen after we paid for the car at their office, I had a big problem with a bank and they spoiled my vacation. That's was the only place I used my credit card while in Mexico, so I was sure it's them. When we went to talk to a manager, she gave us all the details of the employee who stole it to go to the police! Not sure if I was shocked more with the fact that my CC was stolen or with their incompetent management. The worst experience ever renting a car. Their typical practice is to silently add optional insurances to your contract, while they're talking about silly things like fuel policy or your destinations, to divert your attention and make you think it's all nice & smooth. Then, once contract is printed out, they say "oh look, your car is ready there and you just need to sign here, here and here." If you don't stop here and read every single paragraph (and the contract is poorly written, so you would need to spend some good time reading it), then you end up signing up for options. Unfortunately, having trust with a brand like Avis, I have signed it off. And obviously when returing a car and complaining about this, I was told I must have signed it off intentionally as they follow Avis best practices there. In contradiction to this, I was observing same thing live, when a group of tourists from Germany was having troubles getting a car they booked via rentalcars.com. The reason was that they spotted ALI insurance added to the contract and they rejected it. In turn, Avis employee was shouting at them, stating it's mandatory and they won't get a car, unless they accept it. So, it seems this is a common scam practice there at Avis office in Cancun.
