Reserved a car online, but was refused service because of the type of card I needed to use. I had to come back the next day to rent a car from someone else, (using the same card that was refused by Avis) The front desk staff at the time said they'd cancel my reservation. I recieved a $50 No-Show fee a few days later. Customer service refused to reverse the charge. I called the service desk, and was told a manager would contact me the next day. We rented our car from Jasper AVIS office and did a one way to drop it off in Calgary. It took us a long time to find the entrance to the parkade as it was late at night and so the office was closed. The parkade was also gated and looked shut. So we circled around the block several times trying to find where we could drop off the car. I guessed it did not help that we got the car from another location so we did not have any instructions or map on where to drop the car off. In the end, we managed to enter the parkade by fluke. We drove further up the ramp to check the parkade information, and the gate opened as the car neared it. That would have been extremely helpful if it was mentioned anywhere the gate would open even at night. Once we got in, it was relatively to park the car and drop off the key and rental sheet in the box. Take pictures of the car before leaving in case of dispute on the car condition. read more

I need to give my 2 cents about this Avis because I was extremely hesitant to reserve a car from here just from the Yelp reviews alone. I stuck with my reservation because time, location and price wise it worked out the best. I reserved a vehicle for 1PM on a Wednesday; there was only one person in line before me and one associate working at the time. I didn't have to wait too long since the person in front of me was almost done. The Avis associate helping me wasn't overly friendly, but wasn't rude either. She provided clear instructions on my rental on how to find the car and instructions how to return along with the flyer on finding the garage to return the car. Picking up our car was done in about 15 minutes. Returning the car was just as easy. We returned the car on a Saturday at 1PM. We used the flyer to make sure we know the exact location to go to. The garage was a little weird but after a few floors, we figured it out. There were 2 associates when we were dropping off the keys and we were done in about 10 minutes. Again, not overly friendly, but not rude either. Overall our experience was exceptional and couldn't have been happier with our rental. I would definitely recommend renting a car from this place and don't let the angry reviewers deter you. read more

No question this was one of the worst experience I ever had renting a car!!!!! First as soon as you get to the front desk the first thing they tell you is that they don't have the car that corresponds to your reservation, so the options are clear; either you wait until they bring one from the airport or you pay for an upgrade. Once you tell them you will wait for the car, out of the blue they find a car for you. Then, they push hard for you to get the windshield insurance which I declined. Once they gave me the car keys I went to get the car and realized the that the car was to small for my family, I decided then to go to the front desk and ask for a different car, they offered me an option and when I saw the car I went back to see if there was any other option in the same category but with more space. So I came back to the front desk and they offer me an option, I went back to check the car and found out that the car had huge crack on the windshield went back to the front desk and the guy tells me that is safe to drive with a huge crack on the windshield and that I still needed to get the windshield insurance because I was liable for any further damage to the windshield. I booked a rental through the Costco Travel website and was able to get a good deal for $117 (Thursday - Sunday). I've only ever rented from Enterprise before but their rates were too high for that weekend. Having never rented from Avis before I decided to go online and read some of their reviews. BAD IDEA I was so freaked out from the terrible reviews that I almost canceled my reservation but because I was on a time crunch I decided to just see for myself what kind of experience I will have. I pre-looked up where their location was so I wouldn't have any issues getting there and once I arrived I had to wait a couple minutes before someone came available which was not a big deal. When I was at the counter the man I was dealing with was nice and answered my questions on where to get the vehicle, how to return it, etc. The only issue I would say I had was they should tell you how much of a deposit is required BEFORE they charge your card. I am well aware that its a high amount but I was expecting the $250 that enterprise charges and not $350. Still not a big deal on the charge I would of just liked to know ahead of time. I loved the car and it was squeaky clean when I got it. I called the day I was to return it and asked if I was able to be charged less as I was dropping it off earlier then expected and they were able to charge me a day less because of it. Keep in mind this would dependant on when you picked up the vehicle. Dropping off the car wasn't the biggest issue except for the fact that I drove past the entrance twice to the parkade as its right after the Fairmont hotel which is always swamped with cars so its easy to miss. All in all I didn't have any issues with renting from Avis, I think when it comes to being a client with any type of business people for some reason expect to be treated like kings and queens. I get that situations can arise and that sometimes you'll have them not have a vehicle ready, etc but I think people need to be realistic and not expect to be in and out within a few minutes. I have always given myself more than enough time when dealing with enterprise and ya sometimes I have to wait a half hour cause they are swamped but it doesn't mean that they are a crappy company. Same goes for Avis, I had a great interaction from them in person even though my initial interaction over the phone wasn't the greatest but I'm not here writing a bad review because of it. read more

I always try to rent Avis as the staff are generally friendlier and more helpful. I've rented pretty much across the world and this is by far the worst experience I've had from Avis and is up there with the worst of the rest. I spent almost two hours trying to call to confirm the Canada day opening hours. When I eventually get through I was rudely told I'd have to hold without any apology or option - I only hand a quick question. I'm not shocked that they rate so low. After a half hour wait for a car that we reserved way in advance, they gave us a complementary upgrade to an SUV without asking us if we like SUVs. We don't. Lol. I asked if they had any advice for how to get around the traffic to get to the highway, there just happened to be a parade going on and also there were streets closed because of construction. The guy just gave us a blank stare. We rented a Garmin with the car since we're not local, but the Garmin was just about as helpful as the customer service rep, it had not a clue about the closed streets or how to get around them. Rented our car in Vancouver and drove to Calgary. Spent 1 hour trying to find their office on 9th avenue. Finally saw a little red sign on a window but no place to park out front. Circled the block twice before seeing anther little sign in front of a parking garage 50 yards before the office. Luckily found my way up o the 7th floor with a total lack of signage. No one there to assist or check the vehicle for fuel or damage. Found an open parking spot and left the car. Took the elevator down to the ground floor and saw a little red sign showing where the office was. Not a customer friendly business. I would go so far as to call it a bozo operation. DO NOT rent from this Avis. The customer service was shockingly horrible. I made a reservation for a car on the website, paid for it in full with a credit card 5 days before the reservation date. I went into the business to pick it up and it was not available for pickup because they gave it to someone else. The person hired to clean the cars showed up to work late so they were running behind on cleaning all of the cars. I was told that the next car available to me would be ready in 30 minutes, possibly, but not really sure how soon. It was shockingly confusing. They offered me another car that was already clean but I would have to pay an extra $20 a day for it. After arguing, another employee stepped in and gave us the car without an extra charge. I paid for insurance in advance but was told that I would have to buy an additional form of insurance to cover the windshield. I did not purchase it. They told me to go get the car on the 7th floor of a huge parking garage and inspect it myself and make any damage notes on a crappy drawing of the car. I was told that it had already been inspected and was in great shape. I went up to the car which was hard to locate and to my surprise there was a scratch on the back windshield that was about 10" long. I went back down to the office to make notes of the damage. I was then given a ticket to drive out of the garage. I was told that I could hit the info/help button on the garage gate unless the ticket did not work. When I tried to drive through the exit gate the ticket did not work so I was trapped in the garage along with a few other cars being rented by Avis customers, we were all trapped in the garage. This place sucks, the customer service sucks, don't rent from this place, it sucks and sucks and sucks and will put you in a bad mood at the beginning of your vacation. Pretty disappointed with my experience here. First of they didn't have the car I reserved so I upgraded for an extra $20 a day. Then I was told when I rented the car that if I returned it empty they would only charge me $1/L for gas. Instead when I returned it the charged me $3.20/L. Overall the quoted price of $80 turned into $269. I won't rent a car there again! read more

They had no explanation about why the car I had 'reserved' was not there nor did they seem to care. What is the point of 'making ' the reservation if you cannot 'keep' the reservation? Avis car rental policies and customer service representatives need to get on the same page! We had a 4pm pick-up time and called because we were running a few minutes late. We were told not to worry and that we could come anytime before they closed at 8pm. We went out to explore a bit of the city and grabbed dinner before showing up shortly before 8pm to find locked doors because they closed at 7pm!!! We called Avis and explained, the customer service rep said that we could pick up our car in the am but our rate TRIPLED!!! She had ZERO understanding for our circumstances and offered nothing. We asked to be transferred to a manager and were left on hold for several minutes, at which point we decided to hang up and write this review from a Car2go to the airport for a reservation with Alamo. read more

I don't enjoy writing a negative review but I hope this saves someone the frustration that I've experienced. I wouldn't even give 1 star but that's the lowest rating. Our Avis customer service representative, Rotimi, overcharged my credit card. I was notified by my credit card company that a hold was placed on my card in the amount of $300 over what my signed contact was written up for. After calling the 1-800-352-7900 number I first spoke with a courteous representative, Darrell, who was not able to help me and transfered me to a supervisor, Charlet. Charlet started off by apologizing for the company's error but started she could not adjust the payment unless I physically returned and re-rent the car. That is not a reasonable option for me. Her demeanor became more aggressive and unprofessional with me as our conversation continued. I'm out of the country on vacation for my son's wedding, and now have a lower spending power on my credit card due to their mistake. The first mistake was made by the incompetence of their agent, Rotimi. I understand mistakes happen. But, the rudness of the top supervisor available, Charet, is unacceptable. I rented from the Avis on 9th Ave two weekends in a row and both times I got the impression that the staff could really care less about their customers. Very impersonal, and I was made to feel like I was a big inconvenience. Also, while I appreciate the "complementary upgrade', I had the vehicle for three days and reserved an economy car to save on gas. When I arrived I was told they only had SUVs available, so I had to spend significantly more on gas for the May long weekend. read more

Clearly, the staff at this location missed the customer service training sessions. Each time we dealt with the staff at this location (pick up & drop off) the staff could have cared less. Not helpful when we asked questions, working in the slowest speed ever and God forbid if anyone could crack a smile. They did make an impression on us...never to deal with Avis again. Reserved a car 2 days ahead of time, and it wasn't ready until 2 hours after my reservation time. Then after only renting the car for about 6 hours they tried to make me pay for 1300km!!!!
