I have been an executive member of the National Car Rental Service for quite some years, and this is the first time I feel like family renting from them. First of all, the welcome I received at the counter was so first-class from Josh, the manager. He celebrated my loyalty and even gave me recommendations. He personally concierge me to the Aisle where I could pick any car. I was also surprised to learn that the chain laws in California are illegal here in Alberta! The check-out was easy and painless, and I was glad I picked a BMW X2 out of many choices. The car drove through the snow like a champ. The returning staff was when more magical than I could imagine, the fellow guided me to a nice parking spot and took measurements of the tire, checked me in, and asked about my experience with the car, the places I visited, and with their service. The supervisor on site helped out with my billing inquiries and then offered me a distance discount which was a lot. She told me she was doing her job; I was floored. You can imagine, I spent less than $100 for an average 4-day rental, which is an impossible deal and unavailable in California, if you know what I mean. I felt so appreciated not just for the deals but that the whole experience restored my fate with the service industry again, even during these days of covid. No complaints here, this National Car Rental desk is located with the other rental agencies in the same area, just across from the arrivals and baggage claim areas. You don't need to take a shuttle bus to get here, which is awesome. Cars in the Emerald Aisle are all nice and clean and generally bigger than the typical "intermediate" size that I expect. I did spot a 5.0 liter Mustang in there last night, but that may have been an anomaly. I've had an Impalabu and an Avenger, both had no issues. Returns can be hectic depending on the time of day - they really could use some help here. Friendly service and nice folks, though I can't tell if that's a "National" thing or just something that is typically Canadian. read more

booked a car a two months in advance with two car seats. One for my infant one for my toddler. Other car rental places install them for you, or at the very least help. They handed me two car seats and walked away. I struggled for well over an hour and a half with two kids (on my own) trying to install them properly. Nobody helped. Chelsea and Guripta were literally amazing last night We came in from a late flight from Montreal and actually had a reservation with Thrifty. We realized it was for a downtown office. We went looking for a rental and met Chelsea who at first was just helping us by using the phone. We then asked about vehicles and maybe said we wanted and SUV, which were all booked. Somehow we moved on to sedans and she was able to help us with that and set us up, allowing for multiple drivers with no extra charge and even said our credit/debit card would not have been accepted at Thrify anyway and the National does accept it. Guripta then helped by getting the perfect car, with a large trunk and helped with any questions we had. read more

We rented a pickup truck for 11 days. During our time with the vehicle there were NO issues!!! Upon return the woman went right to the front headlight and found a "2 cm rock size hole" in the casing. It would never have been a place we looked at when we first rented the vehicle and did a walk-around. It was strange that within one minute of pulling up to the return area she went right for that spot!! You had to get down on your knee to see it with a flashlight!!!!! What a scam!!! When we first rented the vehicle they rushed us around the car and said don't worry "nothing under the size of a golfball is an issue!" The whole experience was poor and ridiculous!!! a hassle when you travel that you don't need especially with two little kids in tow!! Future renters.... Just be sure to mark everything down or take pictures of it on your phone when you rent a vehicle!!! I'm not sure how this is going to end.... We left in a huff... and luckily we have third party insurance. I'm not sure how they will deal with this! read more

I'm at this car rental in Calgary Airport ever two weeks. I always use National car rental in all the cities I'm at - because I LOVE THEM !! The check in is easy and I always get the car I want with the options I need i.e. GPS The return process is easy and only takes a few minutes. However the reason I'm writing the review today is for the checkout service Friday morning; Firstly, Jason is always the National Rep I'm lucky enough to get every Friday and he does an outstanding job. Yesterday I returned the car with a couple issues. - First I checked the car out and there was only a 1/2 tank of gas - and I returned it with a 1/4 tank Jason fixed that no problem. - Then when I checked out the Jeep my initial paperwork it indicated I was being charged the upgrade, however I'm an executive member and should not have had that extra charge. Jason fixed that - And lastly, the GPS was a little temperamental and didn't work well during my 3 day rental and Jason fixed that as well. All of this he did at 6:30 am (their very busy time) and with a smile on his face, very cheerful, and apologetic and with the best customer service I've had in a long time ! All of the staff here are great and a real pleasure doing business with them read more

This past experience was even better as I went to my aisle (just the regular Emerald level, not executive) and the cars available did not have BlueTooth. After a dreadful experience with another not to be named rental company we went to national at the airport. Mustafa was more then helpful and went above and beyond to help us as best as he could. Nothing was to much and I can't praise his assistance enough! In august of 2017, I travelled from California to Calgary and tried to pick up a car as I am an Emrald member. There were very few cars available and the workers were giving those cars to people they know and I was waiting for more than an hour while people came after me was getting the cars. They took out the key from the cars to give to the people the know. This rental place is a disgrace and will never rent from this place again. At the end after complaining, they gave me a car I didn't want and it was very dirty, they didn't even washed it after the previous rental. I DON'T RECOMMEND this place at all" read more

They charged me for Millage for a drop off in Edmonton, they did not disclose that fee at time of pick up otherwise I would have gone to one of the many other rental car places that would not have charged millage, I called in to National to complain and they really didn't care, pretty much made it clear it must have been my fault, they got me...well, we won't be using National again... I would recommend checking out other rental car places before going to National... read more

Not a great car selection for what I expected as a Emerald Club member. You can get the same options esentially at any other agency at the airport. After I visited the two downtown locations and was informed that only the Airport location offered the Emerald club experience it was very disapointing to be charged nearly an additional $100.00 dollars for the rentail and billed a full hours rentail when I droped off early but was a few minutes over the time. The customer service was good by the staff both over the phone and on site but I was disapointed in having to pay more for a vehicle of my choice and the extra fees. As a frequent business travler provincially I dont see the value in the service being based soley out of the airport location. read more

I drove from Calgary to Toronto in a brand-new Fiat. Was very pleased about the rate, with no added one-way drop-off fee. I was careful to ask, as a competitor (Hertz) wanted $5,000! One tiny quibble: I had to stand my ground about my requested compact car. I was offered a free upgrade to a larger vehicle which I did not want; a) I'm used to a small car b) my insurance wouldn't cover anything valued over $40,000. We recently visited Calgary Airport to begin our vacation, but were thwarted by Thrifty Car Rental who, despite accepting payment in UK, refused to accept my Debit car to secure the rental and consequently refused to let us hire a car. It was 11 at night and we had been travelling for over 20 hours. Step in National to save our holiday.I cannot speak highly enough about the National representative 'Chelsea' who set up our rental, arranged a very competitive price, considering the lateness of the hour, and provided a fantastic car. Service is great, friendly, easy to get to. I have only one issue: as an Executive member I can grab any car, but all there is are big SUV style cars. Why don't we have smaller cars to run around the city, put some BMW, VW, etc. in the lot! Sure have SUVs, lots of people love them, but 50% of the cars should be smaller, sedan types. read more

This was a terrible experience. I am a Emerald member and our company uses National as our main rental company. I picked up my car and within 5 minutes of driving out of the airport, I ran out of gas on the highway. I managed to pull off to the side of the highway and called road side assistance. After several calls back and forth, I waited close to 2 hours before a tow truck showed up to put gas in the vehicle. This should never have happened, yet they made it feel like it was my fault for not noticing the fuel level. There was no fuel level light that appeared on the dashboard. Upon return, they initially charged me for gas. I am still in the process of disputing this charge. I have no choice of which company I deal with for business, but for personal use I will definitely have to reconsider my options read more

Great selection of cars. Fast to rent. Only negative is they need more cars with proper winter tires in the winter.

We are frequent users of National, my husband is executive level in their Emerald Club reward program. We dropped off our vehicle at the Calgary airport and immediately took a shuttle back to our hotel. Upon arriving at the hotel I realized I had left the bag with my external camera flash, extra SD card and extra battery on the floor behind the passenger seat. I had removed it from my camera bag while packing up our belongings and had forgotten to pick it up again. As soon as we arrived at the hotel I called the direct number to the Airport Kiosk and provided details about the vehicle we had returned and where specifically to find my items. Problem number one--we received the wrong invoice, our return was attached to a Vancouver rental and that would be need to resolved. Problem number two, there was no one available to go look inside the vehicle. I was told the matter was being passed onto the manager for resolution in the morning and that I would receive a call in the morning from the manager with an update. Three days later, after leaving multiple messages for the fellow in charge of lost and found an employee from National returned my call. She apologized and said there was no record of any of these details, the vehicle had been re-rented and my lost item was not in lost and found. It wasn't a matter of "if" I left my item, I knew specifically where I had set it down, called within 20 minutes....if someone would have taken the time to check for me then I would have been able to retrieve my items. Either the person cleaning the vehicle kept my items or did such a poor job cleaning that they didn't see them. Regardless, I know it was my own fault but the customer service on this was dismal, especially for an executive club member who has shown brand loyalty! read more

I am really happy with the Emerald Club's aisle system. Picking my own car is great! The really friendly staff are a plus too. The cars are always in great condition with one caveat: Every car I've got has had water spots all over it from not being dried after its last wash. If I didn't have to take it to the car wash for a rinse after picking it up and visiting my family, I would give this place 5 stars! read more

I booked a mid-size with aisle service and was counting on a mini-van for our party of 6. But I also booked an off-airport backup, just in case. When I got to National, they had no mini-vans and only small SUVs. Called another rental and was waiting for a shuttle when a guy from National came back and said they'll put a mini-van on the aisle for me! Is that great or what! I feel like for personal rentals National is a great choice - better prices than most and with Emerald membership, the aisle service (select any car on the aisle) is a great deal. Easy to pick up, easy and fast drop off, great service!

My experience at National in Calgary was terrible. I rented the flat rate, chose your own car for a two day trip. When I drove to check out, the service rep tried to charge me extra for the car I chose, which I had to argue about saying that the point of the service was I was allowed to chose whatever car I wanted. He said: OK today I won't charge you the extra this time. Then he asked if I wanted National to fill up the tank, and that their rate was 6 cents cheaper a litre. Sounded good until I found out that they would charge for a full tank whether I used it or not. I told him NO and to take it off the bill. Then he told me there would be $30 in airport charges above and beyond my rental fee. This was not made clear on the online rental docs. This was more than the rental itself. He said there was nothing he could do and that he got this complaing a lot. He then passed me the bill with charge 5 times what I was expecting. He had left the gas on the bill ($80) and the airport charges and the original rental fee. I reminded him to take the gas off. He said he did. Two days later I dropped the car off and there was that $80 gas charge again (which only I noticed) and the tank was full (I filled it myself a block away for $30). So, National - terrible, shifty experience in Calgary. It will now be very unlikely that I will rent from National ever again. read more

I was travelling with my wife daughter and 3 year old granddaughter The cars in the Emerald Isle were not very suitable and they offered one from the executive isle no charge. read more

I waited 11 minutes for the agent to deal with the customer ahead of me, while a second booth sat empty even though there was clearly an employee available to staff it. On return, they were closed, and the key drop was not easy to find, or well labeled. read more

National is usually 5 stars for me however my recent rental in Calgary AB went completely off the rails. As an Emerald Club member I selected a car, I started the push button starter and drove to the kiosk. The keys were on the dash as the car only required that the key be present or in the vicinity of the car in order to start. There was no hanging tag in the car therefore the attendant requested to see my key. She needed it for the serial # and licence plate #, etc. I then signed and left. About half an hour into my journey I glanced at the dash display and saw a message "KEY NOT PRESENT". I realized that she'd not returned the key! Of course the car was already running when I handed her the key. I knew that when I reached my destination that I'd not be able to restart the car so I turned around and headed back to National. I found a manager who then found my key and sent me on my way. I was an hour late for my meeting!!! There was no apology upon the return of the car 4 hours later despite the manager saying my rental would be free. Much to my surprise I was handed a bill. The attendant upon hearing my story did however erase all charges. Moral to the story; never give your key to the attendant! Engage an audible alarm in the car that alerts to the fact that you're key is not present. It was by pure chance that I happened to see the silent tiny message on my dash. read more

i travel about once a month and i always rent vehicles. i decided to try national at the clagary airport. everything was fine until i called to see if i could extend my rental by two days. i was on the phone and received a total cost for the two days ( close to $300 )i asked a simple questions " how much more per day are you charging me over what i am paying now ". this one question took along time to get an answer as all they wanted to talk to me about was weekly rates, totals, etc. if it had of been reasonable i would have kept the vehicle i had, but it wasn't. i called another rental agency and received a superior vehicle for less than half of what national was trying to bill me. read more
