To top it all off when he handed me back my debit card and paperwork I assumed he also included my ID. No- he forgot to hand it back- which is not entirely his fault. However, after he told me to arrange a pick up for my ID he stopped answering. I have rented here twice and was hyper-vigilant because of the reviews. My recent experience confirmed the warnings: this location is running a 'shakedown' on customers. When I picked up the car, it was dirty--the exterior was covered in bugs and water spots, and the interior had debris and even a gummy candy under the seat. I actually paid to wash and vacuum the car myself before our trip. I returned it this morning in much better condition than I received it, having washed and vacuumed it a second time right before drop-off. An hour after I left, the owner called to claim there was 'pet hair' inside--a common tactic mentioned in other reviews to trigger a $150+ cleaning fee. I told him I was coming back immediately. When I arrived just 7 minutes later, he was visibly caught off guard. He pointed to 3 or 4 stray hairs in the cargo area as his 'evidence.' Once I started taking photos and told him I was calling corporate to report the scam, he immediately backed down. He then absurdly claimed he 'never intended' to charge me--which makes no sense why he would call to complain in the first place. Advice: If you MUST rent here, take photos of the interior and exterior at pickup AND drop-off. He relies on people being too far away to come back and dispute these fake charges. read more

AVOID- SCAM. I rented a car from this location for a week and it turned into a complete nightmare. They lied about the daily rate and then added a bunch of fake, unexplained fees. On top of that, the car I received was completely different from what I agreed to. When I first got into the car, it reeked of smoke that was clearly covered up with cleaning chemicals, which seriously aggravated my asthma. They promise a car that is non-smoking. The car was also so dirty, sand everywhere, straw wrappers on the seats, and not cleaned at all. It was old, tiny, and in terrible condition, including a huge dent on the side that was already there when I picked it up. The man who works there didn't even want to come outside to look at it or show me the car. When I had to extend the rental, they changed the rate without telling me. The older man at this location pressured me into buying their insurance, even though I clearly told him I have my own car insurance and was previously advised that my plan covers rental cars. He lied to me, was rude, and extremely unprofessional. After seeing the shocking bill, I called Avis customer service and spoke with an employee named Asanda, who was screaming at me, not letting me finish my sentence, refused to let me speak to a manager or supervisor, and claimed she was the "first and last point of contact at Avis." Completely unacceptable. I was going through the bill with her, when she decided to hang up on me. I've never dealt with such a confused and angry employee. It's embarrassing how terrible this company and their employees are. To make things worse, the employee at the location told me I could not return the car to the same place I picked it up, and that it had to be returned to John Wayne Airport. Now they're charging me an additional $50 because I returned it to John Wayne. Seriously? It was much more difficult for me to return it to John Wayne instead of this location. This is the definition of a scam. My final bill is $686. This is hands down the biggest scam I've ever dealt with. Dishonest, rude, and they steal your money. I will never rent from Avis again after the experience I had. The front desk agent refused to even acknowledge my booking. My reservation clearly showed the correct price, but instead of honoring it, he tried to charge me more and told me to call customer service. I showed him the reservation multiple times, but he wouldn't listen or even bother looking at it. To make matters worse, they didn't have the 7-seater I had reserved two weeks prior. Instead, they tried to give me a 5-seater and charge me more than what I had booked for the larger vehicle. Completely unreasonable. When we went to check the car they were offering, it was disgusting -- dirty and not at all in the condition a rental car should be. We had a place up the street and went out to eat locally, be sure to take photos and track mileage. We also got hit with a damage bill because of pet hair. Mind you, we never had a pet in the car!!! AB is a scam. I rented a Hornet from this Avis location and the manager, AB, short bald old man was sketchy and rude from the start. He did not go outside with me to make sure of any prior damages to the car he just gave me the keys and said it was in the second row. when I brought the car back a week later (yesterday) all he said was "dropping off?" I said yes and he said "ok bye." again, he did not walk outside with me to inspect the car. I check my email this morning and I have one from Avis saying there was damage to the car. the picture he sent is blurry. I went back to Avis this morning and the car is parked exactly where I left it. I took video and pictures. there's no damage. I get a discount through work so it should only be $211.55. BEWARE - THIS LOCATION SCAMS! I needed a car for less than 24 hours while one of our other cars was unavailable, so I rented one from this nearby location. I literally drove the car less than 10 miles while I had it. Dropped it off the next day, no problem. Over a month later, I get a letter from Avis claiming that the car incurred front tire damage to the tune of almost $800!!! and that they'd be charging my credit card for the supposed damage. I can absolutely sure anyone reading this that I returned the car in the same condition in which I received it, and have pictures to prove it (I always take pictures when renting/returning cars, just because of scams like this). I called Avis about this supposed damage, and demanded proof that the car was returned in the condition that they claimed. The only thing that they provided my was an invoice from the place that supposedly did the repairs (which, frankly, looked like it was created in Microsoft Word in about 5 minutes). And, of course, the invoice doesn't prove anything--certainly not that I was the one that caused the alleged damage. No pictures, no report generated at the time of return, nothing. I, on the other hand, *did* take pictures of the car, as previously mentioned. After all that, Avis ended up refunding half of the charge for the alleged damage... they're still refusing to refund the other half. I'm still in the process of working with my credit company to dispute the remaining amount. Don't believe my story? Just look at all of the other reviews about scams and fraud for this location. I wish I had looked at the reviews before renting here. I've been a lifelong Avis renter, including many years of having high-level "elite" status with them. But never again after this. Generally, my experience with Avis is positive, but in this location, I experienced lack of ownership and customer obsession. During my rental I noticed that the plate number and color of my rental car doesn't match with my rental agreement. This location didn't show any ownership to resolve the problem and instead, they just asked me to keep checking different Avis locations till I find a replacement car to change their defective car. Ultimately, after hours of traveling to different airport locations, I drove from San Diego to Mission Viejo for 90 minutes to change the car. It took me another 2 hours and 20 minutes to drive back to my hotel in San Diego and basically my Saturday got ruined because of an issue that could be handled much more professional and respectful. It shouldn't take more than a couple of phone calls to properly arrange for a smooth exchange in location X at time Y, instead of asking me to randomly check Avis locations in person to resolve the problem on behalf of Avis. The car that I received as an exchange wasn't washed. Manager of the Avis at Mission Viejo asked me to wash the car and send him the bill...!!! I am an employee of a major partner of Avis and internally they consider me as a "premium" customer. I'm not saying that I am special or anything. If I could give 0 stars I would! This location and the customer service I received does not fit the scope at all of Avis. I called to double check and confirm my reservation at the Avis location the morning of January 15th for my scheduled pick-up of an economy car at 3pm. I was told very bluntly there were no vehicles available except an electric vehicle and a Jeep Wrangler, and that the Jeep would be" $10 or $20" more. This sounded so shady. I was very confused and told him why I wasn't informed there would not be a vehicle available when I arrived, which I was going to have to use a ride share service to get there. He quickly changed the subject and asked me if I wanted the electric car or not, which I did not. I told him I would consider the Jeep if it was at the cost I had for my economy car. He told me no. I hung up with him and I called the 1-800 number for Avis letting them know of the encounter I had with the local office. They looked at the cars available and told me there were vehicles available. I asked the customer service agent if they could call the local office to ask why their site shows there are cars available, and he told me that they do not do that. I returned my one day rental to this AVIS location, and they were immediately charging me for a full tank of gas, even though it was given to me with less than 1/2 a tank of gas. The man behind the counter was so mean, and would not listen to anything I had to say he actually scared me and I left the location and went to the Laguna Niguel Avis to return my car. The bottom line: the total charges for my one day rental of $85 per day ended up costing me $287.70. Needless to say I will not be using AVIS for the rest of my life. Furthermore, my company of 45 people who regularly use Avis will be using another rental car company. We are severing ties with AVIS from now on. The branch manager was every bit a gentleman and really went above and beyond to make sure that I had a nice clean car at the crack of closing. The car I got was brand new but he was somewhat apologetic for it being 'dusty' and offered me a slight discount which was not necessary at all. When I picked up the car the older sales person convinced me to buy their insurance and he said that we would be able to get our Expedia $50 refunded. Expedia has called them several times to verify that we have not used the insurance and that we used theirs instead, but he never answers the phone!! I made a special trip in there today and explained the issue and he yelled at me stating that he cannot always be at the phone. Who yells at their customer? Made a reservation for Friday March 12th for 10:00am to be picked up at this location. On arrival although the sign and hours posted stated they were open, there was no one there. We waited from 10am for over 45 minutes and no one showed up. The neighboring business told me that the person just closes up and leaves!! Tried to reach customer service at the corporate number and they were unable to help and was told that there were no cars anywhere close by to rent, unless I went to the airport location. Poor service and manager there named AB is very rude. He does not explain the bill and will charge you for an entire day if you don't bring it in time during the grace period which is 20 mins. During this 20 mins he was taking care of other customers and then took my rental car for a check up drive for 10 mins while i waited for him to return. I asked him if he could call the airport to put it on reserve for me. He said the airport location does not except phone calls. Odd. 4. I decided not to rent a vehicle that he suggested, and I went to the airport, and I had a customer service person on the phone. We called them and describe the situation we were in countering. On the phone they confirmed that the vehicle we want it was not available. The guys name who is able or Abe, was a liar. And we decided to see what else they had we asked for a Nissan pathfinder. But the Pathfinder would be over $180 more than a luxury vehicle we rented. Ha ha ha. My husband had a flipping attack on the speakerphone when we were driving. We canceled our reservation let's see if we get my money back. I want to warn the company that they are serving a very close knit community we talk, I'm part of a mother's group, In the local area. I'm going to talk. I'm going to share my encounter. I'm going to tell everyone how this individual talk to me as if I was stupid that a Ford Explorer is the same as a luxury SUV. As a range rover. Don't treat me stupid. Don't try to upsell your customers when you can't have your operations on points in 4 to 6 months in advance of reservations. Again you are dealing with a local community of people. And your service sucks I better get my money back or I will dispute the charge on my credit card. And trust me my credit services are on point. And and my credit card service is military base so have fun with that buddy boys. Terrible. I rented a vehicle through them and when I went to return the vehicle nobody was at the front desk. I was instructed earlier by the man at the counter to drop the car keys in through the Dropbox at the front door if this were to happen. He said he's often out cleaning the cars and refueling them. Come a week after I dropped off the car, I get a statement charging me for tolls that were made 2 hours AFTER I RETURNED THE CAR. To make it worse, the guy at the counter didn't even mark the car as returned until over 2 hours after I dropped off the keys. Terrible terrible terrible. First time I've rented a car. I told them I wanted to pick the car up at 11:30 AM on 1/3 and return the car on 1/4 at 5 o'clock. I was told the fee would be $56. My trip was going to Palm Springs for the night. I took the 241 tow road to the 91 and did the same thing when I returned. On 1/4 I got a call from Avis MV and asking me why I hadn't returned the car. I told them I would have it back by 5 o'clock on the fourth and was on my way to drop it off. They proceeded to tell me I might as well keep the car until 5pm because I was being charged another day. Then I get an email from them with the bill showing I owed $29 for Toll fees. They didn't say anything about paying the tolls when I rented the car or I would've use my own transponder. I feel this Branch needs a new manager, one that can explain things a little clearer to new customers. If I ever get in a position to rent a car again, I will not be using this facility. read more
