Sadly, after many good (enough) experiences there we too got scammed. They charged us for fuel when we had refueled (extra in an excess of caution). They charged us for extra days and hours that were already within the period we had rented the car for. They overcharged us for liability. Really bad. After several phone calls where we were told to call back, we wound up w a lady from customer 'service'. She refused to answer questions and ran over us when we asked for clarification. She eventually removed one of the bogus charges but she spoke to us like we were (abused) dogs, not letting us speak, demanding that we stay silent, forcing us to ask her to please continue. Refused to give us her ID. Wonder why. Giving three stars because of previous experiences. But we're out a lot of money and lost a lot of time from this last trip and that phone woman was aggressive and rude. read more

This review is for Avis both domestic and international and NOT specific to East 43rd, but have rented from this location, - airports, and all over the US and Europe. In general, the service is at best, OK. The cars, if in inventory, are high mileage. Avis will try to make money on you anyway they can. I have had 3 serious run-ins with them on damages to a car which was not my fault ( either was already damaged prior to my rental OR after I had rented) and won every dispute after some lengthy correspondence with numerous entities to avoid paying bogus charges. My advice- they are no bargain price-wise and if they are the only game in a small town- OK. If not, use Enterprise or National. read more

They will give youa defective vehicle and cheat you, pure and simple. Awful customer service, just awful. I rented a car that turned out to have a slow leak in one tire. I called and informed Avis the same day I rented it, when I saw the sensor light up. They said don't worry, it's fine. By the time I as supposed to drive back from DC to NYC, the tire was flat. On Labor Day. First Avis tried to convince me to drive on the flat tire to find an open tire shop and get the tire replaced for them! Aty my own expense! Then I was supposed to send the them receipt for reimbursement, up to $200. Are you kidding me? What arrogance! You expect me to service your defective vehicle for you? And possibly be responsioble for part of the cost? Crazy and insulting. Finally, after further insisting that I needed a replacement vehicle, SIX HOURS LATER, a replacement vehicle arrived. By then it was after 9pm. I called to let them know that since I had a three and a half hour drive back, I would have to return the vehicle the next day. No problem, the supervisor said, I would not be charged for the extra day and they agreed to knock two days off the rental for my inconvenience. Ok, fine. It had taken over two hours of arguing on the phone to get to this point. They refused to put ANYTHING into an email or text, so that I would have no proof of these conversations. Only my phone call log shows the calls. After I returned the car, I received the final bill. Avis had not given me the two days off they had promised, and on top of it charged me a late fee and an upgarde fee. WTF? I had not requested an upgrade. I had to take whatever car they brought me. Plus I had to waste most of Labor Day waiting around for it to arrive. Plus I had to pay to put the car into a garage overnight and then miss a day of work the next day driving back to New York. So once again I had to call and argue with them. After another HOUR of my life wasted, they agreed to remove the upgrade fee and honored the two days off. But the supervisor still insisted on charging me for extending another day and charged a late fee and extension fee! She gave me a corporate "I'm sorry for the frustration" apology. She completely ignored the fact that the only reason I could not return the vehicle on time was because THEY HAD GIVEN ME A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE AND DIDN'T BRING A REPLACEMENT UNTIL AFTER 9PM THE DAY I WAS TO RETURN IT. This company clearly tells their employees to cheat the clients and charge them whatever they think they can get away with. Stay away. I went there because the location is convenient, but it's not worth it. read more

We had a distinctive experience with Nandi at Avis. she helped us customize our add ons for our trip to make sure we were covered. we also had a last-minute cancellation of our trip and Nandi was eager to help us turn this around and help us refund the trip. was truly exceptional and we will be coming back for future rental car needs. read more

I continue to have an excellent experience with Avis, (43rd, btwn 2nd/3rd ave) The pickup process is quick and efficient, and the return is just as easy, even on holiday weekends. Super nice management & staff. Highly recommended! read more

Unfortunately this location is very unpredictable. Extremely inefficient, you can either wait 10 minutes or 45 minutes. When you're trying to hit the road this isn't what you want out of a car rental. Pretty frustrating read more

Good evening, I would like to take the time to show appreciation to your excellent staff and my experience at the West 76th street location, I received such great service that I wanted to write a review to acknowledge the staff at this location especially the representative named Theresa. Theresa was very efficient, knowledgeable, pleasant and truly professional to deal with, these type of employees make a huge difference to a customer. I'm truly hoping these reviews read and the employees get the appreciation they deserve. Theresa showed such professionalism that you can tell are must really enjoy helping customers. Thank you and I will always recommend this location and will definitely return. read more

I wouldn't typically leave a review but due to the fact that I was so scared to risk renting a car from here based on all the bad reviews I thought I would leave one of my experience. It was super smooth- picked up a car around 5:30 AM with no problems. read more

They are upping their game! I've been a customer to this Avis location for the past 3 years (conveniently located) and was not always happy with the service. Thank you so much to their team for all their efforts today in ensuring my rental read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Typical cases of FRAUD and SCAMMING customers. I actually have 2 horrible experiences with this specific Avis. Rented a car for the late afternoon and employee did a walkthrough. BUT HERE IS WHERE THEY TRICK YOU. They wash the car beforehand so you can't see every small damage. They did it so fast and the employee didn't listen to me at all when I pointed things out. The windshield was cracked but they didn't notate how big it was. I took my own pictures after getting in the car with a timestamp just in case. Well few weeks later they try to charge for a damage that wasn't me. TYPICAL FRAUD/ SCAM. Also it was middle of winter where cracks would never get that big AND if the crack happened there would have been other damage to the car. This is a classic "damage was there but they want someone to pay for it" SCAM. Also previously I had another bad experience where I rented a car for the day and the employee never did a walkthrough. I took my own photos but when I got in the car it reeked like cigarettes. I asked the guy to change my car and he shrugged his shoulders. I was already late so I thought I'd suck it up but man... I had to keep the windows rolled down the entire time because I started getting a headache. Absolutely horrible. read more

Extremely complacent with poor customer service and communication. We had a lost item in our rental car and returned within 10 minutes of returning our car. However, the car had already been shuttled to an airport. To my knowledge, this must have bypassed some protocol because the cars are supposed to be emptied and cleaned prior to transfer to another facility, and this was unlikely to happen within the span of only 10 minutes. We then spoke with a manager at this branch and were assured someone would search the vehicle at the airport and follow up the next morning. We never received follow up after a few days; and we had to call back multiple times, but the car had been moved to a different airport by that point. We resorted to attempting to track down the location of the car ourselves via phone calls, but all of Avis's branches and offices are notoriously difficult to get in touch with. The offices at the airports do not have direct phone numbers you can use; and the lost and found department also does not have a direct point of contact! So, with each call we made, we were lazily transferred to another representative unfamiliar with our situation. This was an already very frustrating situation that the staff at this branch exacerbated tremendously with their complacency and lack of attention to detail. We are still trying to find the item. If possible, I would avoid renting from this agency and Avis (as well as any of their partners). read more

We just picked up our car and it's really gross and dirty on the inside and the outside. We even got the more expensive option and it's really not reflecting that. No car you rent should be dirty upon arrival. There is food on the side still, some granola and blueberries. If I could give 0 stars I would. read more

No cars! Made a reservation weeks ago yet arrive here and no cars available! Standing in line for 45 minutes. Never again!

FRAUD! DO NOT RENT FROM HERE Me and my husband rented a car on June 18 2024. Horrible. The car I was given at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport was not safe to operate. Steering drifted and car hydroplaned several times on slightly wet water at low rates of speed. Ignition switch did not work consistently. I called the airport location to ensure another car would be ready to swap for this one. I was told they would not hold a car for me, notwithstanding the circumstances and that it was a holiday weekend (Veteran's Day). I returned the car the same day as my rental and explained these serious mechanical problems, which the Avis employee at DFW returns appeared to log on his hand held computer, and was promised a full refund. Full charges posted to my credit card. I called to ask that they be refunded and was told that no record of my safety issues was made and I would be given only a 1/2 refund. Also, as my safety issues were not recorded, I am quite sure another hapless customer was immediately given that dangerous car. I am now disputing the charges with my credit card company. I have been a Hertz Gold member for 26 years and only used Avis because Hertz was sold out. I have always avoided Avis because of its bad reputation. Avis exceeded all expectations for dangerous vehicles and non-existent customer service. Will never use again. read more

I was scammed - Avis gave me a car that had expired plates for 6 months, I got a ticket from the police because of that I had to call ERS, call customer serivce, call Avis locations, I was told by Avis to drive illegally to the airport to pick up a new car... I was told my ticket would be paid and I would be refunded the price of the rental for the first day, I was confirmed for my total cost to come out to about $95, then I was charged $577!!! I often rent for this location and never experience an issue. However, there are some employees that give a good business a bad name. For instance, last weekend, I went to pick up my vehicle and with no explanation was upgraded to a 7 passenger SUV. I am only one person but like the feel of driving an intermediate SUV. When I returned to the counter I was very calm and spoke to him in a low tone. "I'm sorry that is not what I paid for and I'm not comfortable driving that." The guy became agitated and responded "I gave you a free upgrade! I don't ike your attitude." and threatened to cancel my vehicle. After 45 mins of this nonsense and getting the vehicle I paid for he starts shouting telling me to don't hit anybody on the road. This man is not only despicable he should never deal with customers again. Complaint against short man with white hair and squeaky voice. The nice security man was very helpful. The following day I notice an $85 charge for gas implying they gave me the vehicle with a full tank. I went back there and the woman adjusted the bill for me. The gas was G 3 Big switch and bait at this location. read more

Their cars are not cleaned. They never give us the car type we reserved this happened twice but this time they don't even tell until we see the car. Furthermore we found the price was also overcharged for the new car which we didn't reserve. When we asked them to change they said no sedans left, and we just saw our next customer got sedan type. Furthermore they told us to switch the car they had to charge extra, then we found they did even we took the SUV they offer. And due to COVID there's a long line to wait for 1 hour to get the key, they don't even explain they change our reservation. Just told us to this is the contract and sign. Everything is unreasonable. And guess what, they DO NOT HAVE CUSTOMER SUPPORT LINE TO REPORT. So only thing I can do is to warn this. read more

ANTI-SEMITISM! I do not make this accusation lightly, but my experience at this branch leaves me with no other conclusion. I went to rent a car with my friend on a Sunday morning and was greeted by the two personal working there. At first they were friendly and professional. However, the ambiance changed once they saw my Israeli passport. Upon presentation of my passport, they insisted that I PRINT OUT my voucher and present it to them before I get my car. I provided my driver's license, voucher number, my phone with the scan mark. But they insisted bluntly that they need a hard copy of the voucher. When I asked why she simply stated: "policy". They suggested that I go ask any one of the local merchants to use their printer. Reminder, this was a Sunday morning, during Covid, nothing was open. I asked if I could email it to them and they could print it out on-sight. The response was: " We don't have email". By this time, incompetence was no longer a viable conclusion. I asked to speak to the manager and they told me he was out and might be back in an hour. Then ignored me entirely. What could I do? I went to a hotel up the block, begged them to print it out and went back with the voucher. I had my friend hold my place in line and when I returned and joined her they accused me of cutting the line, the line of one, who was my friend! I did not move, I said the only way to get me out is to give me my car. They took the voucher (tossed it aside) and gave me the keys (digitally). We have been operating on the cloud for the majority of this century. Email has been a universally accepted business medium sine the early 90's. You expect me to believe AVIS relays on HARD voucher copies???? Also, no one else was asked to present any vouchers! I do not write this to elicit sympathy from management, but as a warning to my Jewish tribe who know all to well the Omnipresence anti semitism still enjoys; who knows all to well, the shift in ambiance when your Jewish heritage is presented. DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS BRANCH! THEY AIDE AND ABET ANTI SEMITISM!!! read more

DON'T RENT WITH AVIS!!!!! This is a horrible car rental service!!! The worst on this planet. They just wanted to sell and take my money. When I got the rental AVIS told me I can drop-off to any location. Few days later I get a bill with a huge charge for returning to a different location. Also, I returned the car without filling up the gas which I should've done before returning. They charged me $10 a gallon! After all this, I call customer service and they are very arrogant people. They told me that I must have everything in writing for them to refund back. This is bunch of bullcrap! I ended up paying double the amount for their horrible service and below average car. read more

If i could give a negative star based on our rental experience today I would. Given the fact we are in the middle of a global pandemic and good hygiene and safety is at the utmost forefront of everyone's mind, I would have expected a global company such as Avis to not only be more proactive in ensuring the health of its customers but also live up to its COVID-19 Safety Pledge. We were extremely disappointed to find in the backseat of our rental car, food crumbs that had been left behind by the previous customer, melted chocolate on the seat and a previous customers credit card. When we told the staff onsite this, their response was that they were short staffed and didn't have time to clean the car. A second employee asked us how the lack of cleanliness affected us... I should also mention the gas tank was 3/4 upon pick up. Prospective customers, please take caution in renting vehicles from this site, they clearly are not even trying to live up to their company wide pledge. read more

Would give 0 stars if I could. Worst run rental car place I have ever been, and we rent from them often (out of convenience but truly might stop after this latest one- because I'd rather go out of the city than deal with them). They never have cars, let alone the one you reserved. You have to wait for one to get returned and hope it is acceptable. And more than 50% of the time they will try to force you to take an electric vehicle - which for most trips I take is really not helpful. The people that work there are nice enough, but even when they do have cars they work extremely slow. There's no separate line if you don't come in with a reservation, which has always felt wild to me. So someone could get in ahead of you with no reservation, and get a car, while you have to wait for them to find you one or one to be returned. No rhyme or reason. Latest wait time for my car was over 2 hours. So if you want to leave by 8am you need to arrive by 6, like for real. And the kicker is while sitting there I went on the website just to see, and it said I could book any car I want and come and get it within the hour, which was of course not true. So whatever data or computer system they're using is complete joke /lie. Even when you prepay still no car there for you. Do not recommend. I typically do quick rentals for skiing and this is the easiest place to get to while walking over with my skis, but at this point I don't even think it's worth the convenience. Would not recommend this place to a friend, and probably not even an enemy... read more

Horrible service. Customer service is suck. If they don't have any car please update the website. Never do this rental in the future.

Live on this street and Avis a very inconsiderate neighbor. From 6am on a Monday morning their staff start setting off the alarms of the cars that have been left on the street to find which key matches which car. Imagine someone so inconsiderate that sets off 30+ car alarms for 40 mins on a street with residents and school going children. Staff just too lazy to find the cars and would rather wake the whole neighborhood. Called to raise the issue and the staff initially denied there were any alarms and then were dismissive of the issue. Building has complained to them before but behavior continues. I have no idea what their car rental service is like but if this is how they treat their neighbors I wouldn't place much hope in their customer service. read more

You take pride in saying "we try harder". Yeah, right--you couldn't have tried harder to totally turn me off. How many times have I rented from you in remote locations such as Des Moines and Kansas City and Evanston? Do you know how loyal I was to you even as my colleagues lined up at the Hertz counters at the many rinky-dink airports I visited in my previous life, as a management consultant? I remembered my Avis wizard number even as my SSN was beginning to fade from my memory. For all that loyalty, you give me attitude in my home town, and charge me for the fuel tank being only 7/8ths full when it was clearly "full" as any sane person would define it, and exceeded the level that I left your facility with? Well, I drove six miles, added a fourth of a gallon, and drove back to return the car. So you think the fuel tank could have been any fuller than when I originally came to return the car? You do the math. How silly. Your insensitive, one-size-fits-all attitude has cost you a loyal customer. And four stars on a yelp review! Who says I cannot get even? read more

Horrible experience renting with Avis and I will not rent from them again. I was charged a bunch of extra fees that were not explained to me when I picked up the car. Don't know about all these other people complaining here but I have never had a problem at this location. Was here today to pick up a car for a biz trip and received a great vehicle. Staff was courteous and quickly set me up. Pick up and drop off was pretty fast and pain free. Only a few minutes walk from Grand Central Station. Plus, they are open 24 hours for easy drop off no matter where you picked up from. Saved my butt a few times when I got home too late to drop off at my normal Avis close to my street. read more

So I made a reservation to rent a car two months in advance. Less than 24 hours after I made the reservation I had to cancel. Avis charged me $50.00 cancellation fee even though the confirmation email they sent me clearly states "If you need to cancel 24 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time, we will refund the full prepaid amount, less a $ 50.00 USD processing fee." I cancelled two months before scheduled pick up time and they still charged me $50.00. Not to mention they only had small SUV's to rent and the price was $568.00 for two days with minimum insurance coverage and no extras. I wish I had seen the bad reviews before I tried to rent a car from AVIS. Never again. Be warned. I'm going to give them $50.00 worth of bad reviews. read more

I find myself crying every time I remember how I went to AVIS as thousands of people were dying of COVID-19 in NYC, and was very disturbed to see that their employees weren't wearing masks or gloves and that the returned cars were sitting with closed windows after having some Lysol sprayed inside, instead of leaving the windows open to air out. When I expressed my dismay, I was told that the staff weren't allowed to wear masks because corporate didn't want customers to be scared by people wearing masks. Needless to say, I was horrified and felt so bad for the poor staff who appeared to be high risk. It made me very sad. It is one of the worst personal memories I have from Covid Times, so far, other than friends dying. read more

I rented from this location during COVID, spring 2021. I think their customer service was top notch--the attendant that brought the car around was fantastic, did a thorough walk around. The attendant when we brought the car back was also kind and detailed. The whole process was super quick. We returned a bit early and although it's not customary, they comped the bill by $20.00, which was very kind. I would absolutely rent from here again. The only negative elements were that when we got the car, the interior was a little sticky on the door and the steering wheel. This could have been a specific cleaning product though so it's a toss. The other downside is that sometimes they are not the most competitive rate. The Hertz down the street sometimes can be up to $200.00 cheaper. Truly though, an enjoyable experience. read more

I rented a compact car "Ford Focus or similar" that "can fit five people." When my husband went to pick up the car, they said they had a Beetle for him. As you know, you absolutely CANNOT fit five people in a Bug, nor fit near the same amount of luggage in the trunk as you can in a Ford Focus. I called after and was told there was nothing they could do, and was dealt with in a very robotic fashion. I am very angry that we were not offered a free upgrade - we had to pay for it. Absolutely horrible experience. The staff was extremely unfriendly from start to finish. Upon dropping off the car, they claimed my gas wasn't filled up properly and I offered to pay the difference. They gouged me on claiming it was way lower than it actually was. Finally, I accidentally left an expensive item in the backseat of the car. Upon realizing my mistake, I called the representative at the front desk. She let me know they would not check the car for my item, that they were far too busy and that the cars were heading out for the airport (20 minutes earlier the lot was completely dead). I wanted to start off by saying that I don't give out 1 star reviews unless it is warranted. I really hope that Avis reads this review because this cannot be ignored. I made a reservation online for a full size car that was confirmed to be used on Wednesday at 1pm. When i arrived to the rental car place, I knew there was something wrong. There were no cars available. I politely asked the front desk women who responded by saying that no cars were available and they were on their way from Newark Airport and HAD NO IDEA on the estimated time of arrival. She told me to take a seat. I simply asked if the next closest location at 64th street would have any and if she could transfer my reservation up there. She said she didn't know and didn't know how to check. She then repeatedly told me to sit down and wait for the cars to arrive. A few minutes later - two more customers came also with 1pm reservations and also was told the same story. How can you have 3 reservations at the same time have no cars available? To top this off - the front desk lady sat there in the chair on facebook watching a video not doing a single thing about it. IF you at least attempt to locate the ETA of the cars - i can make proper arrangements on my schedule for further down the day to move my plans around or postpone them. AT LEAST - act like you care about it or fake being busy. Simply sitting at the front desk staring at your phone and not even making eye contact with us is very troubling. You have 3 customers who are all corporate individuals using business accounts that all need cars. We all had reservations confirmed by the Avis system. At least act like you care. It seems facebook and watching funny videos is more important than doing your job. Eventually - after 45 minutes of waiting - one car arrived from the East 64th street location but the other two customers were still stranded with no ETA. read more
