Went at 4 am to pick the car for the one day trip the guy LUI was so rude and all in you face for no reason, its like we made a reservation just give us the car. NO need to give us your attitude, so un-called for. When we returned the car there was a nice female worker working there so helpful and nice and funny as well. Over all pissed out the first guy and kind OK with the with girl. The guy at 4 am is costing this place 2 stars, way to early to give attitude. read more

Its unfortunate that the corporate office has sunk to such deplorable behaviour because the local office employees are great to work with I will never use Avis again. I rented a car originally for 2 days and returned it within 21 hours and was told i would receive a credit and updated invoice by email. They have now decided that they will not credit me the difference because i dont have a copy of that receipt. Shameful shameful shameful Avis. You've lost a customer for life. I will go out of my way to use another rental service. I wish i could give you a -5* read more

I've been renting here for the last 5 months because I have to drive to PA for work every week. Every Monday morning (I usually come to pick up between 7-730am there have been a few customers in front of me about 50% of the time), I ask for a car with an EZPass (yes, this is a total rip-off but I need the convenience to zip through tolls to keep my sanity during a 2.5 hr drive). For the last 4 times, I load up the car and there is NO EZPass... I spend another 20 minutes waiting as they try to figure out a car with an EZPass for me. I just don't understand how these folks can be so incompetent. I inadvertently left a USB mouse in the car (it must have fallen out of my bag), so I called the location to see if they could check it for me (around 1030am). The rep on the phone (Lavern) basically told me that they were too busy right now and that I should call back after 1pm. I asked if she could take down the car info to make sure the car didn't get re-rented before then, she said "I have a customer in front of me" and literally put me on hold... I waited for 25 mins and gave up.REALLY lousy customer service- really can't believe this is how you treat one of your largest corporate clients... Hertz is a good 4 blocks closer to my apartment, will be taking my business there. read more

One of the worst avis centers Always a long wait to get to the counter even at the early mornings Attendants are slow and do not speak to you unless its absolutely necessary I never get an upgrade at this location despite my status of traveling and renting cars for years; yes, i have status The cars here are always lower quality than the other locations, ex.: 801 Broadway or UES 64th St most importantly - THERE'S NO GAS STATION HERE So you have to take the rental out of the station with whatever gas level it was previously returned with. Very annoying that I had to fill my car shortly after getting it and returned it with more gas than I received it. read more

This company is built on lies, stay away. Cars that are shown on the website are not actually there and you rent them but they end up giving you a cheaper car, their computer system does not work properly, and because of this they end up overcharging the clients, which the client may not even know about, which I think they do it on purpose, because this is how they make money, terrible company and scammers in general read more

OK, so when the normal train I take to visit my family (NJ Transit) was suspended due to a brush fire, I had to find an alternate means to get out to the Poconos of PA. My first thought was a rental car, and I have had nothing but good experiences with Avis, and today was no different. I called Avis from Penn Station, and after about 5 frustrating minutes of talking to someone (that I was fairly sure was mentally handicapped), I had a reservation for the midtown east location. I hope in a cab and head over. 15 minutes later (it's 6pm on a Saturday, mind you), I show up, really hoping that the reservation was correct. After waiting for about 5 minutes (there were 3 people ahead of me), I was signing paperwork and picking up my car. The manager of this location is the one that helped me, and he was both funny AND very friendly. We were both hot, and after joking about it, he excused himself for 2 minutes to go turn up the A/C. That was when I wanted to give him a hug. A manly hug, mind you, but it was the right thing to do at that moment. Hmm... maybe it was funnier then, but either way, it was a nice touch. 5 minutes after that I was in my freshly cleaned Altima headed towards the GW Bridge. Avis, once again, has come through for me in a pinch. The best part? Only $110 a day (with all taxes) for a premium car. In Manhattan, that's pretty F'ing awesome. read more

The only good thing i experience here, was getting in and out without any hassles. I made a reservation a week in advance before visiting New York from California to drive up to Connecticut for a friends wedding. Got there early morning for a pick up and saw 3 families already having trouble. I was thinking "Oh lord, its going to be one of those days." Surprisingly while the others were on their phones with their banks, we were able to get our car without any problems. I am used to Hertz where they give you a sheet to mark any damages that may have already been on the car. In this case Avis did not so we didn't think any of it but boy we should have checked. To our defense, The car looked like it was in perfect condition. Once we got back to drop off the car the first thing they looked it was a small crack on the window. ( Maybe it was already there because it was barley noticeable.) Either way, my boyfriend argued that its not our fault if a rock did hit it. Lucky we got the damage waiver or else hell would've broke loose. OUR ADVICE IS TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK AROUND YOUR CAR FOR ANY DAMAGES BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF THE LOT!! read more

I had a poor experience here. My first time using Avis, I called to reserve a "not-so-big car like a ford fusion, focus or chevy cruz." I don't know what they assess intermediate or full size to be so that was the example I gave. I walked in and they gave me an Impala. I'm sorry but that car is way too big to park in this town so I asked for something smaller and they go, "we have a versa?" me: Anything else? Avis Rep: No that's all we have. FINE! I take the huge buffalo of a car even though you've got hyundai accents and chevy cruzes in the garage. I said, "smaller car" not "cheap car" read more

This is the second time I dropped off a rental car with full tank of gas and the attendant tried to cheat me on extra charges, putting down in my record that I only had half tank, which comes out to be almost $200. Both times I was alert enough to ask for a printed receipt on the spot, caught them red handed and asked the manager to revoke the charge while I followed him to the car. The manager didn't even try to apologize. Which means for anyone else who trust this business and leaves without a receipt, he/she can easily be scammed out of hundreds of dollars. Always ask for the receipt on the spot! Major fraud here read more

These guys are running a scam to overcharge you on fuel costs when you return your vehicle. Today, we filled the tank on 23rd and drove it straight to 43rd - that's the closest gas station. The tank still showed as full. They charged us as if we returned it with half a tank ($120). Worse, they didn't tell us they charged us extra - my husband had to ask for a printed copy of the receipt and saw $120 charge. This has happened to my husband and I twice on separate occasions. The manager came out and removed the charge but clearly he is in on the scam. He didn't apologize either. What kind of people try to take advantage of others like that during COVID times? Shameful. We are reporting them to corporate and BBB. read more

Awful service! I used to work for a car rental company and the time it took to get me in the car took 30 minutes. I had a reservation online already, so it should not have taken me 30 mins. to get my car. No one was there as a customer (just me) tons of workers sitting around. Front desk clerk was not kind at all, seemed a little moody and it wasn't even rush hour either read more

Amazing service!!!! They helped me get a car ASAP!!! Would defiantly recommend!! Thank you so much Camille!!!!

To reiterate some of the reviewers' comments here, I also received a dirty vehicle. They don't clean their cars and unapologetically leave customers in the street with the keys and an unsanitary vehicle without an explanation. If this happens to you make sure to contact the public health (state and city) agencies to file your complaints. Absolutely abhorrent for this to happen during these times let alone ever, customers should never be subject to dirty vehicles. read more

I was given a rental vehicle with no gas in it. When I notified the desk attendant, I was told that there were no other cars on the lot that could be a replacement. The desk agent stated that if I took that car, and filled it myself, that I would be given a gas credit, and they would 'enter it right now' I never received a gas credit, and have received zero help from Avis on rectifying the situation. read more

So I went to this avis and the customer service was bad. so i filled the review form and wrote what happened. the manager called, apologized and offer me some refund. turns out the person at the counter doesn't work there. she was just a replacement and she doesn't care. Now I will say this. things happen in life. out of emotions or things we simply cant control. no matter how bad it is, how you handle the situation after is even more important. the manager turned my bad experience to a nice experience. If i can recall i think his name is Mike. I will definitely go back there if i need a car. read more

Nowadays, it's impressive when a business delivers exactly what it promises and nothing less. In this respect, this Avis location has earned repeat business from me in the future. I walked in looking for a minivan, and within 20 minutes I drove out with a clean, well-maintained KIA Sedona after having had exceptional service from a lady named Jacqueline. No, it's not the cheapest place from which to rent a car, but there are some things with which you don't need to pinch pennies. Renting a car is one of them, because a reliable business goes a long way for anybody who has ever had an unpleasant car rental experience (ahem Enterprise). This place is at the top of my list for my next car rental excursion. read more

I came here to give a review specifically because Andrew was incredibly helpful when my husband and I rented a car recently. We had made a mistake with our online booking (accidentally tied to husband's work account), but Andrew helped us figure everything out and get the car we needed! It meant a lot to me that what could have been a rough morning for us was turned around with his help and manner. Thanks, Andrew! read more

I rented my car online from the Avis website for pickup at the LGA location. When we got to the car, it seemed smaller than upgrade I'd reserved. We worried we couldn't fit our children AND suitcases in the car so the lady offered us a full size SUV. I've never driven in NYC, so I was too nervous to drive something that big in that kind of traffic. She said it was either that or the small car she'd offered originally. We squeezed into the small car (very uncomfortably) and drove it around for the day. When we returned the car that night at the Avis location 43rd street location, we realized why the car seemed so small- they gave us the wrong car! We were in a Mercedes C300 but it was supposed to be an E350 (big difference). I mentioned this to the lady at the return desk. She looked up the reservation and confirmed that we'd been given the wrong car and told us we would have to call the main number for Avis as she was unable to handle it at the store level. The next day I realized my kids had left a few things in the car so we went back the Avis location on 43rd to see if our stuff was found. A different lady working the desk, also very friendly and helpful, told us the car had just been rented. She offered to call me when the car was returned the following morning to let me know if they found our stuff. She held true to her word- we were able to retrieve our things that next morning and we were so grateful! Everyone we encountered at the 43rd street location was amazing! Once we returned home to Dallas a few days later, I called the main number for Avis and told them about being given the wrong car. I explained how my children had to ride with suitcases in their laps all afternoon until we were able to check into the hotel and that we had to spend $25 to park the car for a half hour just to drop the bags at the hotel. The customer service agent was unfriendly from the very beginning. Was quick to interrupt and discount what I was saying before I could even finish telling him the whole situation. At first he seemed unwilling to admit that Avis gave us the wrong car, told me I never paid for or reserved any upgrades (despite my having a confirmation email to prove it and photos of the car they actually gave us). Without me asking, he told me, "Avis isn't paying for your parking!" After a long, frustrating, one-sided conversation, he said Avis would refund me $30. I asked him if that was the difference in price between the car I reserved and the car I got and told me, "I don't know." I then asked him if he could tell me what that difference would be, He replied, "I'm not going to look that up. I'm giving you $30." So I asked how he figured $30 and he told me, "Because that's what we're giving you." Not one apology or acknowledgement for any mistakes on Avis' part from this man. Not even a friendly tone or kind word. In fact, he seemed angry that I'd even called about it. I'm not sure why the rental location on 43rd street has so many poor reviews, because I had a great experience with them, but the man who answered their customer service phone should be working in a different job. Despite being given the wrong car, I wasn't angry about it until I spoke with the customer service guy. He single handedly turned a very positive experience into one that will make me think twice before doing business with Avis again. read more

Horrible customer service. Used a rental for a family emergency, drove a total of 80 miles and filled up the tank with the qtr of a tank I used before dropping off. They charged me over 100 dollars for gas that I couldn't have possibly even used if I didn't re fill the tank. read more

I was so nervous that this place was going to scam me for gas after reading reviews, but my experience was nothing of the sort. I made sure I filled the tank and even took photos of the gas gauge in the Avis parking lot for proof, but the employee scanned the car and even showed me that he filled out "full tank." I received an emailed receipt within seconds without even having to ask for one. The employees were friendly and efficient and I'd definitely use them again. read more

I'd like to update my previous review of this location as my last few experiences here have been quite positive. Although I usually pick up from outside the city, the East 43rd st location is my preferred drop off and I couldn't be happier with their service. The past 3 times here, I was greeted with Brett who is always attentive and polite. The place gets slammed on Sundays because of everyone returning from the weekend and Brett is a rock star, constantly hustling to get people in an out the door as quickly as possible. Something about seeing a person take pride in their job like he does makes me feel good about continuing to do business with Avis. read more

I reserved a compact on line. Went to pick up the car only to be told that no compacts were available and that I'd have to rent a premium if I wanted a car. Since I needed the car, I was forced to pay $100 extra for the premium. It clearly wasn't my fault that they reserved me a compact car but then didn't have any compacts available. Very unethical to charge a customer extra for their mistake. This is clearly a dishonest establishment. I would recommend using the Budget rental location 50 yards away. read more

If I could give NEGATIVE stars I would! Never use this company because they do not keep their license plates, insurance, EZpass or car inspections up-to-date. Do not use this company. My colleague picked up a rental car from this location, we ended up being pulled over for going through an EZpass toll (even though we thought we had that service in the car). The officer ran the car information and it turned out that the license plates were expired, the car was uninsured, there was no EZpass AND it was wanted for inspection violations in North Carolina. We were pulled over in New Jersey on our way back to New York City and could not drive the car across state lines. It had to go straight to the impound lot. We were at the toll booth in front of the Lincoln Tunnel, so the officer pulled over a bus for us to get back to Manhattan through the tunnel. What an inconvenience!!! read more

I rent a lot of cars for work, normally from Hertz , but for a recent personal trip North I was looking for a low cost SUV and I thought Avis might be cheaper. I was talked out of the truck by my corporate booking guy (we get a discount so I used them instead of going direct) into a full size because it was half the price. The logic was at least it will be a big heavy car and I can get some snow traction with the front wheels. The guys at Avis were nice and the price was ok, but the car wound up being very disapointing. I asked what I was getting at the counter and was told a Taurus... First off those are midsize cars at Hertz and not what I had in mind at all. I pretty much hate them. I asked if it was at least a new one (they rebranded the also boring but larger ford 500 as the Taurus for 08') and the guys said sure its an 08'... Yeah not so much. This particular Taurus was not just the old style but had white stains on the top and 45k miles on it (and I suspect they were hard miles). It drove fine but made a lot of weird concerning noises. At one point it sounded like the engine was a bathtub draining out. I guess it was fine but I felt a little mislead on a couple of counts. Good service otherwise however. P.S. This isn't the exact avis location I rented from but it doesn't really matter for purposes of this review. read more

AWFUL customer service!!! Staff is so beyond rude & unprofessional. Avoid at all costs!

My husband and I had booked a car with Avis for our 4th of July weekend get-away. When my husband went to pick up the car we had ordered, they no longer had an intermediate Pontiac or similar car, so they gave him an SUV. We did not have to pay extra, but considering the extra fuel expenses, if anything, we should have gotten a discount. I suppose some might be excited about driving an SUV: not being able to see what is behind your car when backing up does have its draw-backs, however. We ended up driving into someone's brand new motor-cycle whilst backing up. Luckily we got the insurance-option. When we returned the car we left an electronic device in it whilst being hurried out of the car. It was nowhere to be found and the customer-service was terrible. All in all, if you're planning a trip, save yourself the unnecessary headaches and go elsewhere. read more

"We Try Harder" - ah, not so much. When I arrived, there were 8 people in front of me. Based on their reactions, I could tell they'd been there for quite some time. I soon too, knew why they were so frustrated. Poor service and lack of interest by the employees. One employee chose the task of trying to talk to a spanish speaker without knowing spanish. You'd think it would be amusing but after 20 minutes, it's not. This employee failed to notice that the line was extremely long and customers were getting irate. So irate that a yelling match broke out between five customers and the employee. Very awkward. Then finally someone with a brain came out of no where and did their job! The line started moving again, but my clerk seemed more interested in her text message session than renting me my 12 passenger van. Van was fine, service was horrible. read more

I rented a car to drive from NYC to Indianapolis for the Holidays. I needed to switch the return location to a more convenient location. I called ahead of time to make sure that was okay and Marquis assured me it was. Then I arrived and Marquis checked me out and I asked him again if everything was set with the new location, and he said that I was. Flash forward 14 hours later from my drive, I show up to a wrong address where I was suppose to return, I check my agreement and Marquis never made the change of location so I don't have an address. I call the number listed for that location and it isn't in service. I call back to the NYC location and no one answers the phone. I spend 45 minutes with customer service and finally get to the correct location to find out they closed five minutes ago (6PM on a Friday night, very convenient hours), no late drop off and no one there. Nothing is more frustrating than being on one side of the city and having to drive in rush hour traffic on a Friday night before Christmas just so you aren't charged another day. All the customer service reps and supervisors were extremely unhelpful in fixing the situation, their official website had the wrong address listed for a drop off and their phone number isn't even in service. This NYC location wouldn't pick the phone up when I needed their help the most and Marquis really screwed me over and almost left me paying an entire day because of their mistakes. Will NEVER use Avis again and especially not this location. read more

Showed up 20 mins early for our rental and was told there were no compact cars and to come back at 1, our rental time. We did. There are still no compact cars at 1 and we're given a pickup truck?! I declined and said we needed something with a covered trunk (it was raining). Takes the woman 5 mins and she says she can't figure it out because all she has is SUVs, I said that would be fine and she tells me "but it doesn't have a trunk" and I said "I just need a covered area for luggage." She redoes paperwork, it's now 1:15, we are issued a Jeep Cherokee. Then, as I step away from the desk, she goes "oh wait, that car is a compact" and points to a white car across the street. So she reissues the car again and tells me "there's your car, it only has a quarter tank" and laughs. I tell her "well, that's awfully inconvenient. Can't I just get the Jeep?" She says "no, go to 97th street and get gas. We don't owe you gas." That's 50 blocks away and it's now 1:20... annoyed, I go to the car, it has LESS THAN a 1/4 tank. I go back in, tell her, and she says "tough. We don't owe you gas." I ask for a manager, he offers to send someone to get gas. I ask again for the Jeep with gas and they say no, this car has been issued (mind you, so had 2 others). I wait and wait and wait. I leave at 1:45 (45 mins after my reservation). Awful experience and start to what was supposed to be a relaxing getaway. They should be ashamed. read more

Rented a car from them for a week starting on Sunday 8/14, 2011. Was suspicious given the poor yelp reviews. Also, they were offering a week rental for about half the price of all the other Avis rental locations in the city; I was sure I was going to get shafted. Arrived in the afternoon - it was rainy. The place was empty except for the specialist behind the counter. Walked up; good English, lots of smiles, had my reservation ready, all the standard paperwork. 5 minutes later I had the rental agreement signed and the keys to my Mitsubishi Gallant. Walked out to the car, got in it, drove off; everything was great! In the end I paid exactly what Hotwire said I would pay. I couldn't have asked for a better rental experience. Came to NYC with the family for an East Coast "tour." For a West Coast woman, driving in midtown can get a little confusing. FOR CORPORATE AVIS/BUDGET: not this location. this location delivers standard only moderately disappointing rental car service. AVIS/BUDGET as a corporation uses a third party ETOLL company to try and remove itself from the fact that its cheating people out of money. In the northeast, especially around NYC/Long Island it is impossible to get around with an ezpass. I have my own, and used it. It failed to read one time, so the license plate bill got sent to AVIS ETOLL. They charge a convenience fee for everyday you rent the car, not every day you use the pass, plus the cash price of the toll instead of discounted ezpass toll. So crossing the GWB cost them $8.25, and they charged me $27.75. And there is nothing I can do about it. My fault, for renting with Avis. I miss the days when companies really did try harder for their customers. read more
