I reserved a rental through Priceline...named my own price and they took it. I wanted an economy since I had to drive 50 miles per day for the week. The agent at Avis informed me they were out of economy but could give me a Ford Mustang, which does not get good gas mileage. I said No, I needed an economy, which is what I paid for and reserved. They tried to have me upgrade and pay more, but again, i stood my ground. I was offered the supervisor...who apparently told the reservationist she didn't want to deal with me and I was given a Ford Fusion with leather seats and Sirius Satellite radio! At no extra charge! What a nice car! I had to take it back the next day cause I couldn't figure out how to close the moon roof (dork!) and the guy, Keith, showed me. He was so nice. Great, friendly staff and service. Highly recommend these guys. Rental agents make their money by upgrading and add-ons, but if you can't afford it or don't want them, just stand your ground. You'll get what you ordered! I've always used Avis because I've considered them a little less than all the other rental agencies but won't anymore. We checked out our car at 12:30pm (it wasn't in designated spot and was so dirty we didn't pull out of there until 1pm). We returned it 4 days later at designated airport at 1:20pm AND WE WERE CHARGED $45 for an "hour" (the day rate is $60) because we didn't return it by noon - the time I estimated as we had a 2:30 flight. There are all these fees and taxes (insurance too) that totaled up to $146 for returning it at 1:20pm. SERIOUSLY??? At pickup we exit Avis lot at 1pm and return it at 1:20....but because I selected 12noon pickup and drop off times, they hold you to those times, and only offer a 29 minute grace period before they slap that huge penalty. Don't even be 35 minutes after your "promised" drop off time or you'll be robbed by AVIS. They don't bother letting you KNOW THAT when you pick up your car...and they don't give a damn (i.e., no time credit) if you pick your car up later than what you entered on reservation. AVIS sucks!!! I rented a car, returned it with pet hair in the back seat. THEY CHARGED ME $250 2 months later and when I called "customer care" they said "i'm surprised they didn't charge you more." Well, I won't be renting a car from Avis again. We needed to rent a car since I was in a wreck. We figured getting something from the airport was the most convenient. The girl at the counter was nice and helpful, looking to get us the least expensive rate. We have one credit card and it's in the wife's name. No big deal "You can both drive the car." What the girl failed to mention was that since it was rented under her name, she had to be physically present in order for the car to leave the lot. Total BS and a HUGE inconvenience. Pros: Carrie was charming and attempted to do the best at a guest recovery. She was kind, even though frustrated with her colleague Fred who made the initial error but you could tell she truly cared about guest sanctification. Now the negative stuff: We had two rental car reservations, one my brother was supposed to rent and one I was renting. Well, they refused to rent a car to my brother because he only has a debit card. Instead of trying to collaborate on a resolution, they blatantly said we cannot assist you and that is that. Now, my attempt to rent a car was a complete disaster. I was in line at 11:15pm, the first attempt, Fred was "assisting me." Very quick interaction, he collected my card and license, said here is your contract and your car is spot L28.... I went on my way thinking, this is great, super fast... Well joke is on me... Get into my car, go to leave and security will not let me leave because the car is not rented to me. So I have to drive around, re enter the lot, park and go back inside to resolve the situation. I worked with Carrie, who was really trying to do her best for guest recovery.... However, my contract was not found, my CC was charged to another reservation and so we had to start the process all over again. At this point, it is 12:00am.. and I just wanted to get on the road. We process paperwork and I get on my way.. by the time I get to the car it is 12:15am and get situated, I realized the car smelled like a dispensary.. however, at this point, I am exhausted from traveling all day and just wanted to get on the road. Working with their customer service has been a nightmare, been on hold multiple times for 20-30 minutes, with no resolution and am still waiting on a call back from a supervisor. All in all, we will never use Avis again. read more

I rent cars when visiting Oregon several times per year and use a variety of rental companies. Generally, I consider Avis an upper tier rental company. Since I was adding some leisure time to the tail end of this business trip, I decided to use Avis. What a disappointment. The car received was a very very worn bare-boned Jeep Patriot. The interior was in bad shape, the brakes squeaked constantly and the car's ride was terrible. By far the worst rental experience in years from any company. I'm sure Avis would have swapped the car if I'd returned to the terminal, but with tight timing it wasn't possible. My concern is why would a car of this poor safety and quality ever be rented by a company like Avis. read more

Arriving at the desk couldn't be better. Booking a "mid-size" a friendly customer service agent told me that she ran out of mid-sizes and that I could have a Ford Fiesta. I asked her if she could upgrade me to something better, she called to the garage and informed me that she had a Lincoln Town Car for no extra charge. After loading into the car, the message center came up with a lovely "CHANGE OIL NOW" screen that for the life of me couldn't get rid of. Thinking that it would be fine to drive me to the hotel and to the meeting, I didn't think to much of it until I couldn't see the airport in my rear-view mirror any more. Just after merging onto the freeway, my windshield fogged up, became drenched and steam was billowing out from the hood. The car had an oil leak. Being from Vegas, I have seen my fair share of breakdowns! I called Avis and was directed to a call center were a very rude lady quickly sent me to Ford's roadside assistance. Being trapped on the side of the highway with a hot and oily car wasn't my cup of tea. After close to an hour on hold, I called the terminal location and the same lady answered. She told me to call this towing company, get the car towed to the storage lot just before the garage, pay for it and get a receipt. So I waited for about 25 minutes and I returned the car. The staff at the lot was wonderful. They quickly payed me and the lady at the "counter" wanted me to head back to the garage to get a new car. It was only the manager walking by that said that I was already inconvenienced too much and asked me if a brand spanking new Chrysler 300 would be fine. Once at the car, the manager said that they just put the plates on 15 minutes before and it was just about ready to head to the garage for regular service. The car was the newest rental I have ever seen and returning the car was easy but tough (I didn't want to give it back!) If it the Town Car was fine I would give this place 10 stars! By the far the worst experience I've ever have at a car rental place. On a family vacation. My father pre paid a SUV months in advance. After waiting in line 1 hour my parents were rudely treated by an employee. There were problems confirming the reservation because the reservation because my parents share credit cards and my mother used her card to book. My father is hard if hearing and my mother has to assist him and when she voiced questions about the issues they were having the employee rudely stated she would not speak to her, only my father. Once we reached the garage we had another 40 min wait on our hands. After continually promising our car would be the next one up my mother questioned the employee, Lindsey, who told her to "get out because she didn't have to deal with her aggravation." I don't deny that we were angry during this ordeal but we did not yell or curse but we were still poorly treated. Avoid this location is at all possible but it is usually the only one with cars remaining on short notice. With service and management this terrible I understand why. read more

Rented a car from Avis this weekend, and overall had a fairly decent experience. They are located right in the Airport parking structure, so it's super easy to hop of your flight and get our car. I subtracted a couple of points for the car having multiple weird looking stains on the ceiling, and for giving us flimsy car seats for my kids (at $12 a day, I would have expected thrones). read more

Unbelievably bad service. It has taken us 1 hour and 20 minutes to get a car. Waited in line 20 minutes and it took the guy, Rio, 40 minutes to get our reservation in the system. The first complication was because he said we were using a corporate account, which we weren't, the second issue was he asked if we wanted an Explorer, which he then admitted he did not have, and the third was not offering any break or concession on the reservation. His manager helped him, and confirmed that he was entering the wrong number in the system. We specifically asked to not get an Expedition. We think all is good and go to get our car... and he reserved us an Expedition. We are standing in the parking lot in the cold air, waiting. Looking out we see 2 Explorers in the lot. Seriously? Had to rent a car for work...because my truck was being worked on..engine trouble. ..I spent all day looking at all car rental companies comparing prices..had several in mind...my mother said to use Avis due to she used in the past and liked their cars..ect..so I rented an suv (Ford Escape) first off steering was bad..plus the XM satellite radio didn't work which I had paid extra for..Called customer service for several hours trying to fix the problem with the radio no luck...ok since i just rented the car ...can i exchange it for a different car that the radio works...no have to make a whole new reservation and pay more money...why?? STAY AWAY! They scammed my wife on "upgrades". We had a prepaid rental through Chase travel. They gave her a car and never told her it was an upgraded vehicle. Just had her sign the contract, then when returned the vehicle they charged extra amount. I spoke with supervisor on phone. Basically, they don't care. I could tell supervisor was aware of their scam. Just repeating if you sign, you pay. Can't believe unscrupulous business practices like this. I will never rent from Avis again. read more

I had the worst experience with car rentals ever at this site. First, a long line to pick up the large SUV I reserved. However, not only did they not have any of the class of SUV I had reserved, they had no SUV or trucks at all. Instead, they provided a car, and did not even discount the rate even though it was not what we wanted. Then, when we returned, they refused to except payment in cash (with exact amount provided), inferred we must be living in the 18th century or are criminals for wanting to use cash (saying this in front of my children) even though I was previously told by Avis reservations that they allowed cash payments (which resulted in us missing our flight). Apparently, there is a lack knowledge and communication between this Avis site and those who set policy. Do not use this AVIS rental service. They are about as bad as you can find, avoid at all cost, it can ruin your entire trip, and apparently I'm not the only one with this opinion. Note -- this happened a year ago, it was so such a bad memory, I hoped to forget, but can't - hope this review will let me put the experience behind me. read more

If there was a "Zero" rating, I would have selected that option. I rented a mid-size car for the purpose to drive to a Presbyterian Clergy Training event about 35 miles from the Portland Airport. The initial car, which I was given keys to, was present in their covered parking structure but on the main window, in grease pencil, was the message "Do Not Rent-Transfer to . . ." Returning to the rental counter, waiting in line once again, an alternate vehicle was offered. I did a perimeter check of the vehicle and noticed a small main window ding. I pointed it out to the attendant and was told, it was too small to worry about. I should have noted the problem and taken a picture. Approximately one month after my rental was returned, I received a bill for $184 for the replacement of the window. I called to ask if this could be reduced or negotiated and was informed that it was not. Avis is trying harder, for sure. They are trying to be as unprofessional as possible. Posting for my wife: I am in the military and came home to Oregon for a week's vacation of which I spent most of my time in my Jeep Patroit rented at Avis in the Portland Airport. I arrived a day early due to the snow storm in Washington DC and had no problem adding a day to my reservation. The guys at the desk were wonderful, super friendly and explained exactly what I was paying for. The car was clean, ran without a problem and made my trip EASY!! The best part of my experience was finding out exactly what amazing customer service Avis provides. I realized today, to my horror, that I had possibly left very important financial paperwork in the rental. I then called my financial specialist only to find out that Avis had already spoken to her and would be mailing the important documents her. THANK YOU so much Portland Airport Avis Car Rental for taking care of my needs without my even knowing! That is going beyond and above the call of duty and I will definitely use your company again. BEWARE: they are dishonest. Without telling me at the pickup counter, they added a roadside assistance fee that I had declined when I prepaid the rental charges online the prior week. READ CONTRACT before signing to verify no extra charges were added, because they will not tell you verbally about extra charges. I had to speak to the supervisor of the customer representative to reverse the charges. Do not accept the initial offer of a half refund; insist on speaking with supervisor to get a full refund. read more

Trying to return rental car. Absolutely no personnel on ground. One group waiting blocking driveway, no staff anywhere. So I drive back to departing flights unload our luggage and 91 year old mother onto curb. Race back with car to rental return area. Now another vehicle is blocking driveway and roadway so I wait while 7 to 8 people probably employees clown around loading themselves into the van, only to drive into the next return driveway, so I followed maybe 100 ft , then the van stopped all orange vest wearing folk unload and run off into the parking lot. So I hollered at a man who said I should have gone into the first driveway, that would be the one that was blocked by the van I followed. Finally a girl asked if I needed anything. I gave her the key. And left to get back to my elderly mother on the curb. Thanks Avis really trying harder. Rotten service wouldn't rent from them again. read more

I was reluctant to rent here because of mixed reviews. But my experience could hardly have been better. There were plenty of agents to help those waiting; I was next in line when I arrived. Only glitch was the car I was assigned had a notice on the dashboard screen saying it needed oil and an oil filter. I went back down to the agent who originally helped me and she took care of it right away and gave me a different car which had no issues. Drop off couldn't be easier. Never rent from Avis. Ever. Not if you expect to be treated properly. You can jump through all their hoops, fulfill all their requirements, but, on the word of the credit agency who's making me pay to see why they told Avis what they did, Avis refused to rent the vehicle I'd already prepaid. I was going to use it to move, and I explained that to them. Would they budge? No. Did they show the slightest bit of compassion when I explained my situation to them, that I needed the vehicle to move and that being told, last minute, I could not have that vehicle ruined me? No. The kept repeating the phrase, "I understand, but..." over and over as though it would solve my issue. The fact that I've rented from them before made it more infuriating. Having Avis toss away a repeat customer simply because another company, who won't even say why, told you not to rent to me is maddening. The idea that Avis was going to charge me for them cancelling on me was over the top. So, Avis has control of about seven hundred dollars of my money and I have no rented vehicle. I may not be able to go all the way to New Jersey to engage in whatever legal trickery Avis has loaded up, but I can make darned sure no one I know ever rents from Avis again. Seriously, forget Avis. Oh, and, I will be spreading the word, moving on to Facebook, and anywhere else I can let people know how Avis engages in business. read more

Telling someone day of -after they paid for the car days beforehand- that you won't rent to them because equifax or whatever said not to is cruel and just very bad business. Nope it was gone the next day. You are now horrible people in my eyes, because now the person you refused is most likely gonna be homeless, or at least in someones debt, because the car was not for a vacation, but for the purpose of moving to a new state. Tomorrow morning. And now that is not a possibility. Now that person is Fucked. And some free advice to avoid these problems. Got into my rental car only to find that the parking break wouldn't disengage. Spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure out if I was doing something wrong and finally flagged down an Avis attendant to confirm that they car wasn't working. Had to run back downstairs and get another car. Although the car I got later on, the Kia Optima, was quite nice! read more

My daughter and her boyfriend flew home for the holiday. She had a temporary licence sent to her in AZ because her ID/wallet had been stolen the week prior. She went to pick up the Suburban they had reserved AND paid for weeks ago to drive home ( haul left items not taken in her move down a few months ago.) When they got there Avis told her they didn't have anymore SUV's as they were SO busy they had to give it to another customer.. REALLY!!! So she says how am I to get my $400+ to get one elsewhere. You'll have to call customer service. REALLY? Then they were told they could get a VAN or something else. They asked for her ODL, she gave them her ODL, and her passport. They then put the blame on her how she wouldn't have been able to get the SUV anyway because they said her Temp. ODL, was a Learners Permit not an ODL. REALLY!!! You might want to let the DMV know of your conclusion, they said it was her ODL It's a very good thing I wasn't w/her, you wouldn't have talked her/boyfriend into paying for any of that Van you so called got them into...After pointing out this error of yours was HER fault in any way, I would of hopped right over to ALAMO where we have NEVER had ANY problems. We reserved 2 safety seats for our boys, who weigh 28 and 32 lbs. When we picked up the rental car the only seats provided where for infants 5-20 lbs and young kids 40-110 lbs. The Avis staff didn't help find the correct seats, didn't offer any assistance and didn't offer to call another Avis rental car location to see if they had the correct seats. read more

Beware of this car rental place. They will act deceivingly nice to you while trying to sign you up with optional features that you don't really need. They will tell you that the price of the rental is high, and not mention to you that they are bundling a bunch of optional features that you don't need. For instance, the person who attended me told me their cheapest car was 70 dollars, but later when I saw the receipt I noticed that she did not tell me that the loss damage waiver, which I did not want, was included in the price. I don't usually associate really great customer service with car rental companies, but this Avis is it! I was in town for 24 hours to interview at a school in town. The first person to help me at the counter was incredibly nice. She wasn't too pushy with the upsells and kindly informed me of the $13 flat rate if I ended up using fewer than 50ish miles on the gas tank pre-pay, which worked perfectly for me. I ended up using 5 miles over that number due to getting lost a few times in the city and the person that checked my car back in still charged me only $13 when he could have charged for the full tank. Finally, I ended up leaving a check that I was supposed to cash in the car. The manager of the Avis called me early the next morning to let me know and send it back to me that day. It just happened to me and my friend last two weeks ago. When I arrived to Portland I went to the AVIS counter to check-in. First, I gave my itinerary from a bidding site to them which included 5 days car rental and INSURANCE ( I bought an additional $55). She look through my paperworks only confirmation # then gave me back. Next, she asked me to click "Accept" "Accept" "Accept" "Accept" button on the small screen on the top of the counter. Only one page that I have a question It shown Lost & Damage $23.99/day. She said "no worries because you already prepaid with Priceline, right? I said " oh! ok then I pressed "Accept" and I got a car in a few minutes. It seems like smooth But it NOT!!!!! On the day that I drop off a car I got a billing payment $347.xx What!????? I already prepaid via a bidding site $368.xx plus $55). Why they charged me twice? It was ridiculous!!!! I went down to the counter and asked them one of the guy he said this cost charges for AVIS's car Insurance. Me and my friend had argument with him. He said "please call to manager only" "I can't do anything" "Why you pressed "Accept" button if you refuse to pay for AVIS car Insurance?" No more conversation!!! It was a tricky the one that I think on my mind. Next day I called to manager he said "let me find out what happen about your case and I will call you back". It's already passed for a week I kept calling to the manager, left the message but nothing no one call me back!!!! "Let it go" my friend said. NO MORE AVIS FIRST AND LAST TIME FOR US!!!!! Don't be scared of renting a car from here. I had a wonderful experience!! I rented a car off of the Avis website with my USAA membership (yay, USAA waved my under 25 age fee plus other fees). For 2 days my rental only cost about $47. I was nervous about picking up from the airport, but I only had to wait about 5 minutes before Adam, the manager at AVIS PDX, was able to help me. He apologized for the wait, had a smile on his face, and helped me with everything. Adam was so great. He asked which car I wanted, and since I don't know much about cars - he hooked me up with the newest one. When I asked if it had GPS, he looked into others cars that had GPS; however, that bumps the price up, so I declined. Adam went through the rental contract with me, told me the location of my car in the garage, and off I went exploring Portland. Thank you Adam and Avis for allowing me to have a great Portland experience. read more
