Our salesperson, Ian, was professional and great to work with, but the confidence ended less than two hours later. While driving home over the Oregon Coast Range with my 7-year-old daughter, the transmission began slipping, hesitating, and violently jerking forward at highway speeds. A local mechanic inspected it, and Nissan later confirmed a major transmission failure. Worse, Nissan found clear evidence that the transmission had been previously tampered with, removing the factory warranty coverage and throwing responsibility entirely back onto CarMax. The Corporate Runaround: Instead of standing behind their "certified" vehicle, CarMax has subjected me to a week of exhausting escalation and dodging: Service Manager John (Beaverton): Has held the truck for 6 days without providing a diagnosis. The process of getting my immediate quote online, showing up a week later (without an appointment), checking in with my quote code in 1 minute, waiting for 15 minutes for them to generate paperwork, signing paperwork for 5 minutes, waiting 5 minutes for the check, and then cashing my check with my phone app in the store was seamless and pleasant. To top it off, the young lady helping me ordered me a Lyft back to my house. This last gesture of kindness is the whole reason I recommend this place to others. Sold a vehicle for the third time to Carmax. Their online offer was 3% above Blue Book Trade-in, but 17% below Blue Book Private Party. I hesitated, but accepted the offer so not have to deal with meeting multiple potential buyers, worrying about fraud or worse, haggling with irritating dealer salespeople, and dealing with the DMV. Although I made an online appointment, they started the process when I showed up one hour early. It took about two hours which was longer than previous times. There was a coffee machine, but no cups. I used to be a regular CarMax customer, never again. After finding the mini van I wanted, I applied for credit, was approved, paid to have it shipped here from out of state. While it was in transit, I was advised to take my old van in for an estimate, while I was waiting for the results of that, the salesman goes over the stats of my old van, and, discloses a previous accident that was not disclosed to me back in Mar 2021 when I bought it from them, now it has a depreciated value due to the old accident on record ... how is this my fault, they sold it to me this way without disclosing it. Then, a couple of days later, while I'm waiting for the call that my new (to me) van has arrived and to schedule a time to come in and complete the buying process, I receive a call that they're released my hold on the new van and returned it to their inventory. No one called me asking me to come in, just wham, itz over. I called and asked to talk to a manager about this, and, here we are, a week later, still waiting, no one called and left me a message while I was working, and, now, I see my shiny new (to me) van, that I paid to have shipped in from out of state, now listed in their regular inventory. I hope someone enjoys my new van I used to refer everyone to CarMax, have had at least 6 friends buy from them because I referred them over the years, and now they get their customers to pay to import their stock to their store, so they can sell it. Sold my car there and was a pretty smooth process getting my car appraised and a decent trade-in value, until I got to the business counter and dealt with a young girl at the counter. She asked me to complete a form that I had already completed the day prior. Upon stating that I will not complete the form because it is in my car that is now in their possession, she turned to her coworkers and audibly said, "wow." Mind you, I had a dog in one hand and two children in the other. I wasn't there to waste time or unnecessarily fill out a duplicate form. Her comment was not only rude, but unnecessary. I'm not not sure what she was expecting when she turned to her coworkers and made that comment; but, whatever it was, I stood there for half a minute to make sure she would find out. I am thrilled with the service I just received from Greg S at the CarMax Clackamas location, and overjoyed to drive my new (to me) car! Like most people, buying a car is a big deal to me. It's the second largest transaction next to buying a house, and I'm going to be with that car for many years to come. I combed Carmax and Carvana's websites for the right car. Finally found it in a city in California, and didn't mind paying $249 to have it sent to my local store. After paying, the tracking app on the CarMax site said the car was on the way, then that it was delivered, but CarMax didn't have a record of where it was. So..... after several phone calls and chats, I decided to drive to Clackamas to find out what was going on. Very fortunately, Greg was the very first person I talked to, and he helped me a great deal. I found him to be honest, professional, knowledgeable and patient. After digging around he said, I believe the car is on our lot. I walked outside with him down a long row of cars and sure enough, he located it! No one else could do what Greg did and for that I'm very grateful. Once the car was found, the rest of the transaction went very smoothly, including turning in my former car as a trade. Yay! I totally would do business with CarMax again and will always work with Greg S. When someone goes the extra mile for you and fixes a problem much bigger than they are, I tend to feel very loyal and will bring all the business to this person that I possibly can. Instead, this carmax location sold me a car that was in a class action lawsuit for the engines dying, catching fire, and burning peoples houses down without disclosing any of that information with me. Lo and behold, my cars engine died less than 10k miles after I bought it. I am lucky it did not catch on fire and burn my house down. They are lucky they didn't get me or my family killed. She relies on silly excuses to get out of any possible customer service. I now realize CarMax has their employees stall, delay and deny any reasonable customer service assistance possible. Bought a car from them on 2/12/24, including the extended warranty. 3 months later, I'm on my 2nd trip for major repairs. Check engine light came on due to low oil before I was even due for my first oil change, A/C doesn't cool the car enough to handle 80 degree weather, wiper blades had to be replaced after first rain, and car jerks forward when you release the brake after coming to a full stop. I wanted a reliable used car. I did not do the due diligence I should have on this car: I chose CarMax because their reputation/marketing led me to believe I wouldn't have to. That was my mistake. WOW! I was sold a car that did not belong to CarMax. This is probably the most neglectful, grotesque, egregious, embarrassing, unprofessional, non client caring, dis honest thing a business can do. I bought the vehicle in Oregon. Mind you I live in Washington State. The short. 12.13.23 I buy a vehicle at Carmax Clackamas Oregon. Salesman was good. Very calm demeanor and seemed to know what he was doing. Sales guy assures me paper work will be in my mail early the following week so I can process tags with DMV. I leave dealership with temp permit. I am pleased with my car buying experience. One week + later still no mail. I called Carmax. A CSR informs me that my paper work will be delayed due to "DMV being closed for the holidays. (this was a lie). Later that day. I go through the paper work again and notice there is no registration. Odd I thought. I call Carmax again. A different CSR tells me the delay in mailed papers is due to verification requirements and that they wont mail anything until after 1-3-24. Verify what? We signed a contract. The car is sitting in my driveway. It was reiterated to me my info needed to be verified before they could mail me anything. (Lied to again). 12.29.23 I call and ask for a status. I am now feeling uncomfortable and annoyed. They insist on delays beyond their control without a proper explanation. So I decide I to call WA DMV and they have been open all week. I don't know about this place. My neighbor works at a credit union and she says they are criminal when it comes to financing. Luckily I wasn't going to Finance. I found my perfect car then realized it had the same problem that another year in the generation had. After some big disappointment I tried to find something else. It didn't happen. The people who work there do t really know much about cars. I know there's a lot of males and models, but the lack of drive to help me sort some info out was sad. A One Star Review - that Led to a 5 Star Purchase I was assisting someone in buying a car. They had scheduled an appointment for 11am yesterday to look at a Toyota Yaris. When we arrived the sales person who was scheduled to show the vehicle was not there. We were told someone would meet us outside to look at the car. We went ahead and started without assistance. Upon initial inspection of the car, we found some minor exterior issues - namely roof trim was loose on both sides and the rear bumper was missing clips on one side. The car was locked, but when I looked inside I was surprised to see that the seats were soiled. After 20 minutes or so, we went back in to ask for the vehicle history and if it could be test driven. The vehicle was driven out of the sales lot and parked. Before taking it for a test drive we started looking it over. The car was filthy inside. When I opened the hood, I immediately noticed corrosion on one battery terminal. The engine compartment hadn't been cleaned (which is good when inspecting a car for problems). I removed the air filter and it was filthy. Everything else looked normal. The back cargo cover carpet was fuzzing badly and there appeared to be pet hair inside. When I opened the front passenger door, we noticed light splattering that continues all the way across the dashboard to the drivers side door. I believe this was actually mildew. The seats were filthy with stains, and crevices and seatbelt hardware was covered in dirt. I removed the glove box to see the condition of the cabin air filter and was horrified by what I saw (see photo). It looked like it had never been replaced in 7 years. So many red flags that the vehicle was likely not maintained properly. We didn't bother taking the car for a drive and quickly left. This was very disappointing on so many levels. I assist people in buying vehicles and will discourage my clients from buying here in the future. I would have thought that a vehicle in this condition would have been sent to auction instead of sold on their lot. So, why did this lead to a 5 star purchase? Had CarMax done a detail job on the car, we would have never known how poorly this vehicle was maintained. We drove across town and found a very clean, low mileage Toyota that had clearly been cared for and maintained with 30,000 fewer miles for $700 less. This dealership provided a CarFax report that includes vehicle maintenance. This is very important and far superior over CarMax's Auto Check that provided no maintenance records in the report. If you buy from CarMax, I encourage you to pay for additional peace of mind and at least get a CarFax report if not a full vehicle inspection by the branded dealership for the vehicle you're considering purchasing. read more

At first, I thought Carmax was all about the customer. I bought a car in Jan 2022. November of that year, engine seized. Fortunately, I purchases the Maxcare warranty. The motor was replaced, I had a loaner car. Took about 2 months to complete repair. Then we continue to notice that oil is just disappearing. It's not leaking, we assume it is burning up. People at Carmax and repair shops say it's a thing. That's just how Kias are. March of 2024, car breaks. We tow it to a repair shop. $300+ dollars out of pocket later, it is fixed. May of 2024, I'm driving to work and engine seizes AGAIN! We tow it and the same repair shop diagnosis it as needing another engine replacement.Almost 3 weeks without my car. Carmax will not help with anything. No rental, no loaner, no nothing. I don't even want this car anymore. I took very good care of it and it is shitting all over me. They came out and looked at the car and said there are leaks and the front bumper needs replaced ( bumper is brand new) and there is no leaking on the underside ... I was so ready to give them a 5 star review too and I really wanted too!! They had absolutely amazing customer service and were very knowledgeable about their vehicles. We asked to look at a vehicle and they showed us it right away. They didn't try to sell us on any other car and didn't push accessories or anything like that. However this is where the trouble began. We had been approved for a CUDL loan through our credit union. It was sunday though so we were unable to provide the loan to Carmax. We told them this specifically a couple times. And they provided us with a solution. They had a program where we could finance with them and then we had 3 days to switch to our own financing. We asked quite a few time to ensure that it would be possible to switch to our loan the following day. Now here we are at the credit union. The loan person has been trying to work through switching to the CUDL loan and they actually believe we were mislead about being able to switch. Thank god for a fantastic CU that is doing everything they can to get us switched to their loan. We will NOT be shopping here ever again. read more

We helped out my daughter on buying a car from CarMax right before Covid-19 happened. At the time they told us to go through the car right down what you see that needs to be fix and bring it back in and we will fix everything. They said they already check it all out before putting it on the lot. We did find some minor things that needed to be fixed ... she called them left 3 messages and no call back. I called and finally got it in for the problems. We also got a email stating that because of Covid-19 they are existing their 90 day warranty on cars. Our 2018 Ford Focus has been in the shop 4 times already for a new transmission and I've only had it for a year! It's a manual too folks. Something's not right. Paying top dollar for a car that is in the shop seemingly more than it's been on the road. Every-time it goes into the shop it is a headache and like pulling teeth to get Carmax to do anything at all. Let alone return our calls. We have been on the phone at times for over an hour just trying to get an answer. Then when we took it into the office where we bought it, we were given the run around. I recently needed a car and on my search checked out CarMax. The salesman was helpful and from a customer service standpoint everything was fine. My issue here is connected to the way the cars are priced. CarMax offers a "no haggle" pricing policy - which on the surface seems great! I don't have to negotiate. There is only one problem - most of their inventory is priced well above the appropriate retail price that it should be. If you compare the make, model, condition, milage and so on you will find that the used car retail Blue Book on most units is less - in my case almost by $5,000. Since it's a "no haggle" price your choice is to either overpay with CarMax or search somewhere else. I did ask the salesman how they arrived at the price and his answer was a very canned response. It mainly focused on a certified 90 day warranty that comes with the vehicle. I ended up buying my car at the dealer of the make. A very similar vehicle to what I was looking at at CarMax (same year, model, mileage within 10k of each other) was about $6000 less. Even with a 3 year extended warranty it was about $2500 less than CarMax's price with a 90 day warranty. I appreciate their concept but it seems like it's being used as a way to overcharge. I strongly recommend that if you are looking for a car to take the time to check out what you are seeing at CarMax. If it's like me you will be able to get it at the dealer for up to 25% less. read more
