Rented a car from them. A dog jumped in and jumped out. I return the car after a 1 week trip. 2 months later they charge me a $250 cleaning fee for the pet hair. No warning. Just charged it. Customer service did nothing to resolve the issue. First and last time I rent from them. Enterprise has never treated me as poorly as Avis did. I don't care how long it's been. The only reason this is a 2-star rating instead of a 1-star is I had a rental car to drive. I had booked a weekly car rental (a standard SUV) through Costco Travel from AVIS at their PDX airport location. The pickup process went smoothly but when I went to check the car and turned it on, I got an 'Oil Maintenance Required' sign on the dashboard. I went back to the rental counter and asked for a replacement vehicle. This second interaction was with a different salesperson than the one who had completed the purchase. She told me that the 'Oil Maintenance' sign doesn't mean anything and that the vehicle should be good to go as only vehicles that show up as good on their system are rented. I naively assumed this to be true and drove the rental away. On the way, especially on inner city roads, the car would give a jerky motion after braking. I tried to ignore this thinking it was an artifact of getting used to the vehicle. But this continued on the rest of the day and I also began to experience a jerky motion while giving gas. I knew something was off with this car and began to regret taking the rental salesperson's word at face value. The next day, I called up AVIS at PDX airport and asked for a replacement. The person whom I spoke to said I could have it exchanged at any AVIS location. As I wasn't staying close to the airport, I went to the 'Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Portland' location as that was closest to me. After an hour's wait, I was told no replacement cars were available. The way this was handled merits a review of it's own but I will save that for a different day. I freely admit that going to a non-airport location on a weekend hoping for a replacement vehicle at the ready wasn't the smartest decision on my end. So I drove the car back to PDX. And on the way, the 'Check Engine' light came on. I was flabbergasted that I was led into driving a vehicle on which oil maintenance clearly hadn't been done. I handed the car back and went back to the rental counter for a replacement vehicle. I was told there was a Honda Accord available. I explained to the salesperson (ironically, the same woman who yesterday had assuaged my fears about the 'Oil Maintenance' sign) that I needed a standard SUV, not a sedan. She retorted with 'Well, you did not mention that'. Well duh!. Wasn't it obvious that someone who paid for a standard SUV would need a standard SUV as a replacement? I told this to her in so many words. She then got me a replacement and I drove away. Although I finally ended up with a replacement, what irritated me about this process was the AVIS agent's unwillingness to take my concerns seriously in the first place. This caused me a day's worth of hand wringing and wasted time getting the vehicle replaced. And her sassiness about me not "mentioning" that I need a standard SUV as a replacement when it should have been obvious from the rental contract agreement also rubbed me the wrong way. read more

This is hands down the WORST experience I have ever had with a rental car company! It's no wonder they have such bad reviews on here. It all started with a delayed flight we had getting into PDX. I tried to call the local number to let them know that I still wanted to keep my reservation, I was just going to be there later than I had originally expected. After calling NUMEROUS amounts of times (either no answer, or hung up on) I was finally able to reach a representative- At which point I explained my situation with our delayed flights, and was told to "not worry about it", and that I would have "15 hours from the time of my original pick up before being charged any additional fees". When we finally arrived and made it by the 15 hour mark; I was greeted by Felicia who mentioned she remembered me calling, and reassured me that all was well and that I would only be charged my original reservation price. As we were at the counter we had a conversation regarding whether or not I needed insurance coverage for the vehicle, which I stated was NOT needed as I already have my own insurance. I was then offered a "gas package" which would allow us to return the vehicle empty, and for an additional fee they would fill it up themselves- We excepted that and it was finally time to get our vehicle. We get to the car and noticed there were scratches and missing paint on the door handles, however there is no one that walks around with you to go over any damages to the vehicle-only a type of security officer who gets you in and out of the gate. We mentioned the damages to him and he tells us to take pictures of it and give it to them if they need it" Well, now it's time to return the car... we do that, then head upstairs to get to the United counter, and as I am putting away my new receipt we had just gotten from the guy who received the car, I noticed that from a original reservation price of $762 they are now charging me $2300! I walk back to the Avis counter, and ask why my charges have gone up. I am then told that the total was higher because I had picked the car up after my original time, and that insurance had been added to it! I asked to speak to a manager, and the woman at the counter walks to the back, comes back out and says that the manager was "busy on a phone call" and wouldn't be able to help me. I ask her how long she thinks it may be, as I do not want to miss my returning flight. She says she isn't sure, then asks me if I would like her to go back and ask him. I say yes, and she returns and says "he's not sure, it could be 10-15 minutes or 45 minutes", he doesn't know. I say to her I do not want to fly all the way back home without having the issue resolved, so if there was anyone else I could speak to you. She says he is the only one, but if I could write my statement down and leave all of my information and she would have Shane the manager give me a call back as soon as he's off the phone. I leave all of my information and wait for a returned phone call. 3 hours go by and I still haven't heard anything, so again I call the local number, and just as before no oanswers, or the phone hangs up. I finally reach an agent and ask her to speak to Shane. She says to me if I do not have his business card with his number then I can't reach him?!? I say to her that the other representative gave me that number to reach him at and she replies back to me "ugh! we are busy here at the desk, so here's his number". As if I was inconveniencing her. I then call his direct line, and he says to me that he hasn't returned my call because he needs to wait to speak to Felicia about whether or not we had discussed insurance coverage. He says that she is not in until later, so he "hopes" to call me back either today or tomorrow, but he's not sure when he'll be able to. I then get a voicemail from another manager named Morgan, and he says to me that as he was "looking over my reservation" and he sees where the issue was. He says to me that it was because I had picked the vehicle up later than I was supposed to, but he will adjust it to honor the original price I was given. But then tells me that my total is still $1800! I returned his call, and he says to me that it is still higher than the $762 because I have insurance on it. I say to him please review your security footage because it will clearly show you that I tell Felicia that I do not need coverage on the vehicle. He says to me that their cameras can only capture picture, not sound. How convenient! So now here I am, stuck with a bill more than double the amount I was expecting it to be. Literally the worst customer service I have even seen! And clearly the people they hire are the most incompetent people! I will never rent from them again, and I encourage all of you to always double check the employees work. Because clearly when it comes down to it they will never be wrong! read more

Worst Avis Experience ever! Failed on all counts: 1. Initial rate advertised was $200. After making reservation it was quoted at $300. Upon checking back in, I was charged approximately $375... Warnings all over the internet about hidden upcharges. Beware... 2. Upon arriving at Preferred desk in garage, my name and space number were on the board and I proceeded to my car. There was no paperwork in the car. Had to go stand in line at the Preferred booth and was told I didn't need paperwork. Garage exit guard initially refused to let me out without paperwork. Said another person took the wrong car previously and did not understand why there was no paperwork which is required. I told him I had asked for such and was turned down and he finally let me go. I later realized I had nothing to show the police had I been pulled over. 3. Car was not properly prepped. Dirty inside and windshield smeared so badly inside I could not see out when sun hit it. I had to pull over and try to clean with Napkins and water. Very difficult. When first time using windshield wiper fluid, low fluid light came on. Had to vector off and get wiper fluid and fill myself. 4. Car return was an utter nightmare! Pulled into return area in garage and no people or signs. Finally walked around and saw a Budget Rental person in uniform and asked him. He said "I don't know what's going on but I would go to the booth". I did and there were 15 people in line well out the door. Line moved incredibly slowly. One guy left line and went back into the airport to try their line. He came back later and said the airport counter was closed. After 35 minutes waiting in line to simply return my car, a lady came out and asked if anyone in line was returning and I was the only one. She took me inside and did the return. I was being glared at by other frustrated customers waiting to rent cars. It took her another 5 plus minutes as she had issues doing it. 45 minutes to simply return a car!!!! I am a lifelong Avis user and have never had anywhere near as bad of experience as this. Horrible I will never rent with AVIS again. I was quoted $195 to rent a car for 3 days in Portland, OR (not including the insurance fees, etc.). We get to the airport and have the agent whose name was SHIOW-FENG at the AVIS car rental facility at the PDX airport. First off, she was very rude, to begin with, did not even acknowledge us, and just asked for ID and the last name on the reservation (it seemed like she hated her job and did not want to be there), this encounter already put a bad taste in our mouth. She then tries to charge us for the highest insurance coverage for the car without even giving us options and explaining the different types of options. When questioning the price she was now quoting us which was around $600 and some change compared to the price quote we were quoted via the internet upon check out on the AVIS website ($195) we started to question and ask why the price was so high all of a sudden. She got frustrated with us and we had to ask her this question three times. For all three times, she cut us off and would not listen to what we had to say, which is completely unacceptable. When your customer is asking you for clarification three times in a row and we get blown off three times? It is time to put our foot down. We told her that she is not listening to us and she still had the nerve to not listen to us and explain the different insurance options. At this point, we were over her horrible customer service skills and just took the lowest insurance option. What pissed us off the most is she did not mention there would be a holding fee of $400 dollars and some change. When we signed and agreed to the terms and conditions to the fees being charged at the point of check out with her nowhere was it mentioned that a holding fee would be added and withdrawn from the card of use (the holding fee was returned once the car was returned). So, we had this account specifically set up for the amount of the car, so long story short we over-drafted because we were not advised of this $400 holding fee, if that were the case we would have made proper arrangements to avoid the overdraft fee. We called the 1-800 cust. service line and they advised they can't do anything for us and to contact AVIS at PDX. We called and called and no one answers the phone. At the end of it all, don't book with AVIS in general. Horrible customer service skills for their car agents. Spirit Airline Customer Service Agents (knowing how horrible they can be too) have better customer service skills than these Avis car agents. What was funny was once the sale was complete she wanted to be nice. Go figure! read more

I rented a car and was told that only a Prius was available. The next morning my Prius would not start so I called customer assistance who sent somebody to jump the car. After waiting for over an hour for somebody to show up to charge the car I was on my way. A month later I received an $80 bill for them to come out and charge the battery since they said that I did not purchase the extra service. I explained that the car is a hybrid and its not starting is like the starter not working on a gas car. That is a defect and not a result of something I did. After repeated calls I finally got a refund. Horrible experience. Do NOT get a hybrid. read more

Apparently AVIS employees don't know the difference between FWD & 4WD. Tried calling to the actual PDX location, but was always immediately transferred to the main offices. FOUR DIFFERENT guys told me the car they were going to book for me was AWD or 4WD. Get my confirmation... it's a FWD. I had to call again (sent to main offices again)... and had to tell the guy they set me up with the wrong car... he said no its a 4WD... I then had to explain to him what FWD meant... -_-. Renter BEWARE! Friend rented a car at this location and indicated that he wanted a cheap compact car. We were going to book through the USAA app but the "manager" said he could give us the same deal. Gave us the rental at 19.99 and said he was giving us the "manager's special". Apparently that includes shafting your patrons. I told my friend (who had never rented a car before), that we didn't need the extra comprehensive or liability coverage because that is covered trough his own insurance policy (I'm a licensed insurance agent). The "manager" stated that the coverage was already included with the discounted price. He was insinuating that the discounted price included coverage... but sure enough, he charged my friend 16.25 a day. Something that he didn't understand, but I noticed when we left and were on the road. Tried to call the facility to correct the issue, but the automated system just tells you they are too busy to answer so you are routed to the national customer service number. The rep said she couldn't help and we would have to call the facility or drive back. Well of course we couldn't call the facility and driving back was just an inconvenience. Book early and online, stick with what you want and CHECK YOUR CONTRACT. I would tell you to avoid this place, but sadly most rental places are the same... read more

Round two of L.A. Vacationers vs. Portland Airport Car Rental Agencies: "Coche de la muerte!" It's one of the mysteries our day: How can a rental agent, from Dollar Rental (::boo, hiss::), be so slick and smarmy when a perfectly honest and normal-speed-talking agent from Avis (::yay, friendly::) stands roughly 25 feet away? Is this what some people are referring to when they describe the natural balance of nature? It's a question worthy of Beakman or Mr. Wizard, for sure. Or maybe those weirdos on the Discovery Channel. At any rate, the difference was night and day. If you don't know what I'm talking about, please refer to my awful, awful experience with my "upgrade" at Dollar. Ugh. Ms. Avis clearly understands that no-nonsense customer service equals happy customers and repeat business. There was no veneer of smarm on her. She searched for the reservation, let us know the car wasn't available, apologized, and gave us a replacement vehicle at the same price -- no up-sell or bamboozling. It was so smooth and pleasant, I thought something was wrong. Thanks Avis lady! She may have righted the wrongs done by the other rental car girl, but I'm not sure I ever want to square off against rental agencies again. AVOID THIS BLOODSUCKING COMPANY! My husband and I traveled to Portland on business and being tourists we didn't display our paid street parking receipt in the correct window so we got a citation for it. We paid the citation when we got home because it wasn't worth the hassle of disputing the charge. The citation was given on 03/06. The check we wrote on 03/12 cleared immediately. No big deal, right?? (BTW--Portland gives you 30 days to pay, anyway). AVIS sent us an invoice today, 03/27/2012, for $108 for the same citation! The burden of proof was on us. It was a MAJOR hassle because I didn't have our processed check in a format I could e-mail (who does?!). I knew I had to fax our proof of payment, and the FAQ Avis sent instructed us to use the fax number on the invoice. There wasn't one ANYWHERE on that invoice!! So I went on line to get a fax number, which was displayed pretty clearly. Luckily, however, I called to confirm that fax number because the service rep told me that it was the wrong number! She had to give me a different fax number. Long story short, this thing is handled now, but AVIS SUCKS and I will NEVER use them again. The original citation was $40---Avis wanted $108 from us!! They didn't even bother to see that it was immediately paid. It agitates me so badly that I want to tell the world how much I hate that this happened. It was so gawdamned inconvenient!! How dare they!! We LOVE Portland and we learned from our mistake concerning how to properly display the parking receipts. We HATE Avis for what they put us through, not to mention the totally stupid looking periwinkle blue Mustang they stuck us in the whole time we were there! How embarrassing! This was my first and last time renting from this Avis location. I checked out my car on June 1st, 2016 and returned it on June 8th, 2016. Our drop-off time was 4AM. I returned the car at 3:45AM and there was not one Avis employee to be found. Myself and a couple other families that were renting from Avis were dumb founded as to how to return the car. We were all left with no other choice, but to leave the keys in the car (That was a huge mistake). My car was paid for on the day of the reservation; months before the arrival and pick-up date. However, on June 13th, 2016 after being home in Rhode Island for almost a week, a random charge for $57 was on my credit card from Avis. I called the Portland location located in the PDX airport where I had rented the car (Numerous times). Not once was I able to speak to an employee specifically at this location because they were too busy... After being forwarded to the worldwide customer service number I was told the charge was for not refueling the tank before returning it. The problem is, I did refuel before returning. So one of the employees at this location made a huge error by charging my credit card to refuel a car that was full when it was returned. This caused a huge issue because the only way I can get my money back is by e-mailing my credit card statement to Avis where I have to wait 3-5 business days to see if they will refund my money. How about having employees at the location for customers to return their car rather than slapping them with a refuel charge for a car that was refueled before returning. the customer service for Avis is terrible. Nothing has been done to compensate me for my inconvenience and their error. P.S This is how I can prove BS. Each gallon of gas not refilled cost $10 gallon. I was charged $57. This means that my car was almost 6 gallons below full. I refueled the night before driving to the airport (10 minute drive). The car was not used after the refill for any other driving. Avis, can you please tell me how a Ford Fiesta that gets 36 miles a gallon was 6 gallons below full after driving only to the airport after refueling......... Now please refund my money you thieves. I will NEVER rent from AVIS again. They charged me $355 for 2.5 day rental when it's supposed to be 49.00 a day. Slapped on fees and taxes. I had already PREPAID $180 months before with the added insurance, but they charged me a few days ago AGAIN at $162. Meaning...yeah I paid $355 for a 2.5 day rental. And then when I called them (5x), they kept hanging up on me, then I called the next day, a representative named Gorge picked up, and he was disrespectful. The name of the reservation was under my fiance's name, but I paid for it. He kept asking if I was his secretary, I responded no, I'm his fiance, he said, "oh, his girlfriend then, sorry we can't help you for security reasons". Okay...but I PAID for the reservation. Cheap rental car rates (especially if you bid through Priceline), but you get what you pay for! They gave us the option of a Ford Fiesta or a Kia (I think), and we opted for the Ford. It seemed ok at first, but then the transmission started shuddering between first and second gear. We didn't want to deal with the hassle of exchanging the car or being blamed for causing the issue, so just kept our fingers crossed that it made it through the rest of our trip, which it did (phew). At least the line for picking up the rental was short, although it takes a lot of time to decline all the add-ons they try to sell you (like upgrading your car for ONLY $5/day, etc). Returning the car was pretty easy, so I would probably rent through Avis again if they had a much cheaper rate, and hope that I don't end up with a car that sounds like it's about to break down. read more

I'm not sure why the overall rating is so low but we had a pleasant experience with Avis. It was the cheapest in-terminal car rental option by far. I rebooked several times ended up with a total cost of $64 for two weekend days in an economy vehicle. There was no line when we arrived and we were done with the paperwork and in the car in about 10 minutes. The Kia Rio was small but it had everything we needed for a weekend. It was also extremely easy to park and barely used any gas. The return process was also very smooth. Don't let the negative reviews deter you from renting at Avis. read more

Just rented from them (before reading reviews) and to start off we specifically booked a SUV monthS in advance just to be told they "overbooked" and are out of SUVs when we got there. We were given the option to "upgrade" for a "discounted" price, that price was over double what we had paid (note: we have rented from other companies who have overbooked and because of their error was given the next best available for the price already paid but not with Avis). We declined and ended up downgrading a few steps below for $50 less than what we originally paid for the SUV. Upon returning the vehicle on time, they over charged us by $40. The lady said the receipt couldn't print but lucky enough we get text notifications when our card is charged and that is the only reason we noticed what they ended up charging us. She told us to go to the counter and they would fix it. The lady at the counter had difficulties fixing the price and couldn't explain why the overcharge. Good thing we kept the original receipt from check in to prove the cost. She was finally able to adjust it and said she sees that our receipt did print out with the other girl (strange because I sure didn't get a receipt). And because of all of this we almost missed our flight back home, we literally had to run to our plane! This place is definitely a SCAM, just read all the similar experiences that dates back 3+ years ago!! This was the first and last time booking with Avis! Save yourselves the headache and don't book with Avis, it's truly not worth it!! read more

There was nothing wrong with our car, speed of service, or convienience (terminal location). The problem I had with Avis at the Portland airport was the fact that we were very slyly upgraded in car class and price without our knowledge. Not only that, when we inquired about the discrepency the associate assured us that the car we got was indeed in the price category we requested. On a corporate level, they remedied the problem quickly and gave us a refund to the category we booked, but we should have never had to go through that in the first place. read more

Absolute bottom dwelling staff, Mike the lead on PM shift is an absolute embarrassment to Avis. His employee at Budget was clearly high out of her mind, deleted our reservation, kept my id which I then had to return for, and then said we couldn't rent multiple vehicles even though we walked right to Hertz and rented multiple car with no problems. Mike should be embarrassed by his customer service and apparent enabling of his employees. Heroin is a hell of a drug, lay off the stuff Avis staff and learn how to treat people. Last time I'll be using Avis. The front desk was very unhelpful. Almost charged my credit card on someone else's reservation, if I didn't read the fine print this wouldn't have been caught. They had to cancel my existing reservation, start a new reservation and was charged more than the original price. Car was smelly, and no one was there to walk around the vehicle and point out obvious scratches / scraps that were previously there. Wish I could swap the car out, but like I said no one was there to help out. Highly recommend booking through enterprise when flying into PDX. Don't be fooled by the "discounts online" through AVIS! Sorry to see that others have run into problems. I have had nothing but exceptional experiences with all of my rentals with Avis at PDX over the years. I signed up for Avis Preferred, which is free. As a member, you don't even stop at that lobby that is pictured in so many of the reviews, but rather go up one floor to a small, uncrowded check-in, or in many cases directly to your car. Everything can be done on the phone app. I am frequently given a choice of cars on arrival, directly through their app. It may cost a few dollars more than going with coupons, but not much more and saves headaches. Staff has always been very friendly on my visits. read more

This company has two stars for a reason. Beware, you could be scammed as I was! I rented an Altima for $900 with insurance. When I went to pick it up, no more than 2 - 3 minutes after signing the contract, they had rented it to ANOTHER PERSON. I watched as the car I rented for $900 drove off in front of me. They offered me a smaller car that was renting for a cheaper rate ($300) but still wanted to charge the $900 fee for the Altima. When I asked for my money back, they tried to scam me by refunding the cheaper car they offered in replacement. In other words they wanted to give $300 back to me after I had paid $900. All of this headache and I was never even handed keys for a vehicle. They then treated me like it was all my problem and not theirs, and they took 0 accountability for what had happened. Very shady business. I would recommend anyone looking for a rental in Portland stay far away from this place. read more

Stay away! This is one of the worst rental car services I've ever experienced . I already prepaid $136 and ask how much it would be to add an extra day they told me $53. I agreed and signed the electronic agreement which they gave me a receipt for. When I brought the car back they had charged me $100 including a late fee and gas charges when there should have been no late fee because I already prepaid for an extra day and also brought it back with a full tank. I felt like I was speaking to a wall the agent was rude and unprofessional his name was Julian. I spent half an hour at the counter arguing with him and he just looked at me with a Blank Stare this has ruined my experience traveling to Oregon it's unnecessarily expensive for no reason. The price when I booked it online said $77 for a daily rental... What did I pay? $178. The person at the counter tells me the base price was shown online, but since it was only a reservation and no payment was made, fees get added afterwards. The desk and the customer support on the phone had so many different answers and policies. We had to wait for a refund for being charged for not putting gas in the vehicle although we brought in the vehicle full and proof of the time and $64 purchase of gas literally minutes before returning the vehicle. Another refund is still pending according to the CSR over the phone because "my supervisor will have to approve the refund." That refund is because of the time we returned the vehicle. Front desk told me we had till a certain time to keep it before there is a late fee. The agent on the phone had told us it's already late. I called hours before our reservation to confirm what time we could return the car without a late fee and at that time, the person on the phone gave me the same answer as the front desk. I received so many different, confusing, frustrating answers to everything. And several rude people I had to communicate with. Why work for a company or position that you're not fit for? I wil definitely not return to avis for a rental car. We rent from enterprise at least once every 2 months and we have NEVER had an issue with them. I guess this is what we get for trying something new just to save a few pennies. read more

This has to be one of the worst car rental companies I've ever dealt with. I needed a 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicle guaranteed for me when I arrived, and 3 employees said they could not do this for me. Then they told me they could not provide me with snow chains because it was against their policy; even though their website allows you to choose this as an option. He also stayed on the phone and walked me through all the online claim steps to ensure A smooth return process as well as so that he could get feedback from me as I went through the steps so that he could use that to help other customers in the future. Literally the WORST service I've received. I have worked in the service industry for over a decade, and sitting at an airport for over an hour, past midnight, dealing with a rude agent at the counter and speaking to FOUR different people on the phone to rectify the situation and STILL LEAVING WITHOUT A CAR THAT I HAD PREPAID FOR is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. This will be my first ever review on a car rental station, but I feel it to be necessary. While searching for the address to the location, I noticed it only had 2 stars on Yelp. Out of curiosity, as this seemed VERY low, I decided to read some of the reviews. This was around the fourth or fifth time I was going to be renting from this location. I was amazed at how many 1-star reviews it had. I will say, the beginning of my rental was not great. As a preferred plus member, I haven't had too many issues getting a nice car whether it be in my car class or an upgrade. I'm very particular about rental cars. The agent only offered me a couple car options, some of which were SUVs that I didn't want as I would be driving round trip to Boise. She ended up finding me an Altima which would have been satisfactory. The only issue was that about two hours into my drive the tire pressure on front right tire became quite low! I filled it with air several times over the course of four days and it kept losing pressure. I didn't find this to be very safe. When returning the vehicle, I spoke to a manager and wasn't expecting much. However, the manager ended up adjusting my bill above and beyond my expectations to make the situation right. This was greatly appreciated, as I've had tire blowouts before and they are very scary. Would definitely recommend this location, and will rent from again. read more

I rented a car at Portland airport and when I returned it they charged me $10 a gallon for 5 gallons because it was 3/4 full. What a rip off. To make it worse they lied to me when I returned it in Redmond and said it would only be a $20 refuel charge. Then got my receipt the next day with the $50 refuel charge. I have been Avis Preferred for years, but I won't be renting from Avis again. read more

The charge for the damage was very reasonable, less than we had anticipated. I've read of rental car companies taking advantage and trying to rip off customers for damage either real or fabricated. That did not happen here. The response was straightforward and the people he dealt w/ were reasonable and respectful. read more

For something that was handled flawlessly by one of your co-workers you seemed to have the most trouble doing it and with an attitude no less. Arrived at Portland, forgot to make car reservations. Normally I use Dollar. This time there was 20 people in line at Dollar and no waiting at Avis (now I know why). I was quoted $115/day for a midsize car, which in and of itself is a ripoff. I came back in 3 days after using 1-2 gallons of gas. They charged me nearly $40 for 2 gallons of gas and my bill came to $493 for THREE DAYS. I will NEVER EVER USE AVIS AGAIN AND RECOMMEND ANYONE READING THIS NOT TO RENT FROM THEM. (assuming that Yelp doesn't push down my review) Unless, of course, you have money to burn and nothing better to do with it. Make sure the rate on your reservation matches what they quote you when you show up to rent the car (have the paperwork with you to confirm it). Also, when you bring the car back, make sure you have the paperwork with you that you got when you rented the car. Compare your final total with what they quoted. I originally rented the car for $174, as a phone app special, from Thursday to Monday. However, I needed to add a day. That bumped the rate up to $241. An extra weekday to rent is high anywhere. However, when I brought the car back today, it checked out at $331. And I brought the car back two hours early. The clerk that checked me out said to go to the office and they would straighten it out. He did so. I asked him what happened. He could not give me a firm answer, but said, "I fixed it to $241, so everything is ok." But everything is NOT ok. How many people, I wonder, has Avis ripped off?! This is the SECOND time they tried this on me. I rented from them at Houston Intercontinental (IAH) and I was quoted $279 there, and the bill was $536. I was an hour late getting the rental back, because I was stuck in traffic. They knocked it down to $379, but charged me $100 extra for that hour. They said I could have called. I don't have time to search for a phone number and try to concentrate on that while driving a strange car. How many people are in a rush to get to their flight and don't check that kind of stuff?! There's no telling how many people Avis has ripped off with this "shady" billing?! This is why I try to rent from Enterprise whenever possible. I've never had an issue with them. I gave them two stars, because the car was in good shape. It ran well. I drove it over 1200 miles and it ran well. It got 40 mpg (I had a Chevrolet Sonic). But given these two experiences, it is VERY DOUBTFUL that I will ever rent from Avis again! Oh, and they advertise Sirius/XM in the vehicles, but the only thing I got was the preview channel. read more

Avis Rent A Car has a bend me over policy that seems to be an ongoing problem after reading reviews. I picked up a. A car at the PDX location to be dropped off in Sandy Utah. The price was to be around 134.00. I had a picture of a Hotwire deal showing the front counter my pick up and drop off location. I even gave my home address in Utah. While leaving in the car they booked I noticed 2 check engine lights on as well as the front left tire being 12 lbs low. I immediately went back, and the attendant said to just go to the Avis plus counter and they would switch out vehicles. I was then given new paperwork and was on my way. Upon returning to Utah I called Avis to let them know that I wouldn't make it in time to drop the vehicle off and at that point noticed my drop off location was changed to pdx during the change of vehicles. Assured I would be able to work this out with management at pdx, I soon found out that they have been non active in returning my calls. My charge upon drop off (after refueling the vehicle) was over $1000.00. They still have not returned my calls, to try discussing the issue. They've been frustrating me to say the least. At least call me back. I could book a car today from pdx to sandy Utah and the price is actually cheaper through the Avis site. read more
