9/2024 trip to Portland turned into a nightmare thanks to Avis at PDX. We arrived at 12:00 am to find a line of 50-100 people, and TWO people working the desk. The line was about a 1-2 hour wait! 4/5 stars because we had to wait for the only woman working the front desk at 3:30am to come out of the bathroom so we could check our car in. I understand it was early but we would have appreciated a (be back in 10 minutes) sign so we knew to wait. We have returned cars at an odd hour and had to put the keys in a lock box but in this instance we could tell there was someone working behind the desk, but couldn't locate her. Anyway... We rented a Kia Soul for 4 days, pick up on a Friday and drop off Sunday, and paid $145. We had never driven a Kia Soul so that was a new experience. The car was clean, didn't smell like smoke, and had a USB port. No XM radio. Apparently Avis has a main office in Virginia Beach VA because the charge was flagged by our bank due to "suspicious activity." Being in Portland for the weekend and having other charges in and around Portland and then throwing a VA charge in there was suspicious I suppose. Had to settle that on Tuesday when we got back. read more

I've rented through Avis Preferred around the US - Avis PDX stand out as the absolute worst. Just beyond bad. Avis Preferred never works right here. Supposed to head to your car. It's never there, or, like recently, the wrong car is in the assigned slot. I was told to "walk around and find the right one." No, Avis, that's your job. Go down three flights and try again. Wait in line - the whole point of their program to avoid. No apologies, no comments, just continuing horrible service. Car has 60k miles and smells strongly of body odor. Paul Blart mall cop security has an attitude, and like the people at the desk and who run the place, should be fired. No response to my complaints of such awful service. Go anywhere else. I cannot emphasize enough how bad the people and service are at this location. read more

Rented a jeep at the Portland Airport. After returning the vehicle, I received a letter saying I was charged $450.00 for some dog hair. It is extremely excessive since they should be vacuuming the vehicles between each rental anyway. I will never rent from the Avis Group again. My nephew had the same experience. Once in Hawaii, he was charged an exhorbant fee for sand. If you choose to rent with the Avis Group, maybe plan on getting the car detailed before returning. Would be cheaper. read more

The line at Avis/ Budget car rental in the Portland Airport is was extremely lengthy. There were 7 stations and only 3 agents. Since Avis and Budget are the same company they share the same line adding to the holdup. It took over an hour to get to an agent. Someone asked if there was some technical issue and one of the agents said no, it was just that everybody comes at once. Duh, its an airport. The whole time we waited in line it didn't appear to get any shorter and the other rental car companies had hardly any lines. We did request a Camry and got an Altima. No biggie but obviously you can't be sure you'll get what you ask for. That being said the return process was actually easy. read more

This company left us stranded with a vehicle that should of never been allowed to be driven off the lot, Les Schwab called the vehicle a "Death Trap" there was not an adequate spare, the caps to hold the tire in place didn't fit the car, the jack was not appropriate to hold the weight of the Vehicle, the "roadside assistance" we purchased was a joke, they don't come out and help you, you have to get the car fixed, then they reenverse you??? How does this help??? They first gave my car that i specifically reserved away, which led to a long wait for a replacement vehicle. Despite promises of a discount, they failed to deliver. Now, they're charging me $590 to extend my rental for just 6 hours due to a delayed flight. (2 times the actual rental price for a week..) I can't reach the actual location and am only redirected to a call center that lacks the authority to resolve issues or offer assistance. The customer service is non-existent, and the claim that they have 'no power over rates' is frustratingly false. This company hides behind its employees and provides no real support, effectively taking advantage of customers. Avoid this company at all costs! read more

If I could I would not give any stars! I called Avis today to inquire about reserving a vehicle and was greeted by a foreign "gentleman" (not really a gentleman). He had a very loud tv in the background and had me on speaker. I had to ask him to repeat several times and he got irritated with me. When I asked him for a daily rate he refused to give it to me until I told him the date of pick and return. I tried to tell him that I would like to know the difference in price in cars and the I would decide how long I could rent. Nope! So incredibly rude! He was out of SF, CA. Avis - Line - Car Rental Near Me - Portland, Oregon

First things first, when we picked up our car we were told that the name used for the reservation (mine) must match the name on the card you are using (despite the car rental being secured with my husbands card). Thus, we had to use a debit card that had my name on it and it was an extra $400 because I was "now using a debit card" instead of a credit card. This was not transparent at all when reserving the car. Thank goodness I bought my card with me. I was told we'd be able to switch the card when we returned to whatever card we wanted to use, which brings me to my next problem. Secondly, the return. We arrived at PDX to return our car. Car rental closes at 1am per the Avis website, we arrived at 12:45/12:50am to return the car. They were closed. Now, I don't know about you but I know when I am supposed to work I am supposed to be there until the posted time, this is false advertising not being open until the posted time on their website. I tried calling the Avis customer service representative to find out why no one was there to take the rental even though we arrived before closing, but was re routed to the "after hours" although it was not after hours per their website. Avis, PDX, June 25, 2024, noon. Reserved a car and paid the deposit online. Arrived at the counter to see a line of over 50 people waiting AHEAD of us. Two agents (plus a "supervisor") manning the counter. It took us an hour and a half in line to get to the counter to pick up our reserved car (Prius or equivalent) which was not available. We were offered a Toyota Corolla instead. By the time we got to the counter, there were well over 50 people BEHIND us in line. All of the other car tental counters had no more than 5 people in line and were cycling through them very efficiently. When we asked the "supervisor" at the Avis counter why those companies had no lines, she said "those are customers with reserved cars and are just picking them up." And that the long lines at the Avis counter were just due to it being the summer season. Never again, Avis, never again. read more

I reserved a "mystery car." Everything on the website said it could one of several types: gas, hybrid OR electric. When I went to pick up my car, the kid at the counter said "only electric available for mystery cars." I said I don't want an electric car. Sorry, no can do. "We can give you a gas car for $30 a day more." "The website says Or electric." "No, it says it's entirely the manager's decision, and he says it has to be electric." I've checked. The website says nothing about "manager's discretion." It clearly says "OR electric." He could have given me what I wanted, no problem. Instead he seemed to take a great deal of pleasure in upsetting me with the huge extra charge I now had to pay. He also seemed to take a great deal of pleasure in trying to bully me into taking a car I was extremely apprehensive about driving. When I returned the car, the Avis employee knew nothing about how to get a wheelchair. Don't they train ANYone there on customer service? I ended up spending a huge amount of money on a very upsetting experience. Never again will I rent from Avis. read more

TIP: Costco membership allows you to add an additional driver for free. Avis has never been on the top of my mind when it comes to car rentals and my experience this time assures me that it still most likely will not be one of my first choices. We had to make an emergency trip to LA and needed a standard SUV the same exact night. With little to no options available from other providers, I had to settle for Avis and pay the premium prices at the airport. The car rental area can be extremely confusing for locals as you wouldn't be coming from the airport terminal. We had asked a team member and she informed us to go upstairs to the customer service area. Sadly, there was a sign there that informed us to go back downstairs to the other customer service area which we had originally walked passed! I would recommend checking there first before making your trip upstairs since you walk by there anyway. The vehicle they had provided me was a 2020 Toyota 4Runner. The first thing that I saw when I started it up was that it needed an oil change. In addition, I am not sure if the car rental industry has changed its regulations but according to the Avis team members, if you get a flat tire while operating their vehicle, you are responsible for the cost of replacing the tire(s). I have rented several times with Enterprise and was never told that. In fact, they even gave us another car for free! Fast-forwarding to when I returned the car, I had asked the team member if we could do a walk around the car to make sure I wouldn't get any unexpected charge for damages - he rudely replied by saying, "no." I responded by informing him that I'll do it anyways and just record it. I understand the importance of social distancing with COVID-19 and we were in a tight area but it was the manner that he had said it that was uncalled for. read more

I rented a car w/ Avis in Portland OR and it was the worst experince I've ever had renting a car. On my return it broke down on the side of the road and took three hours to get a tow truck. I missed my flight and had to sit at the airport for 7 hours and had to buy a flight on another airline. The Avis manager at the airport told me she would zero out my bill, but did not. Lousy business practices. I highly recommend anyone not renting an Avis vehicle. I reserved a rental car and for a special type of car that may be gas, hybrid, electric, or similar. Upon arrival at PDX rental counter, I was told that the only special car available was electric. I explained that we were driving through very remote areas of Oregon and would prefer to have gasoline or hybrid. I was then told that if I wanted, I could have a gasoline vehicle for $15 more per day, even though they had gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles available. The rental agent told me I would still have to pay $15 more per day if I wanted to use something other than electric. Since we were on a very tight schedule, I had no choice but to take the car agreeing to pay $15 more per day... A huge mistake on my part. Upon contacting Avis corporate office, I was told they didn't see any problem with what occurred at the airport and they would not refund me any money. That says a lot about a huge corporation like Avis. Personally, I will never use Avis again and I highly recommend if you do use Avis that you read and watch everything very very closely. Skip this place and use a different rental company. The lady tlat the regular counter that checked me in was friendly. She pulled up my reservation and told me I could have gone straight upstairs to the Preferred counter. It was my first time in Portland so I had no clue. Pluse there was no line so I didn't care. She asked if I wanted to upgrade to the next class of car for $10/day which I declined. She assigned me a car and we went upstairs to get the car. The car they gave us was a Nissan Sentra. We inspected the car and there was a huge dent in the trunk. Like it was rear-ended or someone backed into something. I went to the preferred counter to see if I could switch cars and was told I couldn't because all the cars were reserved. The girl at the preferred country had a "I don't give an eff attitude" and I didn't have the patience to deal with her so I just took the car. As we left the lot and drove down the street, a "Warning Malfunction" light came on and made a beeping sound. I called customer service but they said there were no cars, that she could tell, in the same class as the car I was given but I could go into a location to see if they had some that was not showing online. Um, no I'm not going to be driving around town and hope that a car is available. So I said "eff it" and I wouldn't rent from them again. Then we realized that the trunk didn't lock. Even when the car was locked you could still open the trunk from the outside. We didn't feel safe leaving our belongings in the car when we were out and about. Sad that the trunk is the only place you can hide stuff safely and we couldn't even have that with this car. This is my second time renting with Avis and my second bad experience. I needed a car for my stay in Portland to return at the SeaTac airport. I made a prepaid reservation directly on Avis' website and the reservation process on the website was a breeze even though I took the time to register as a preferred member. A couple of days prior to my arrival, I received a reminder email from Avis; and in the morning on the day of my arrival, I received another email telling me that my car was going to be waiting for me on the preferred floor and for me to just go in and drive out by showing my driver license to the gate attendant. The email also specified the type and color of car that I was getting with note telling me that if the car was not to my liking, I could exchange it. When I arrived at PDX and got to the rental car floor area, I went straight to the preferred floor as instructed and saw my name on the board along with other preferred members renting a car that day. An attendant showed me how to get to my car and a nice white 4runner was waiting for me. I inspected the car quickly, put my bags in the car, and drove away. Everything was so simple. Only reason why I'm not giving a full five stars is because a few minutes after I got on the freeway, the TPMS sensor light went off on the dashboard, which means one of the tire pressures was low. I actually had to stop by a Discount Tire Company to get the tires inflated. Although getting air at Discount Tire cost me zero dollars, it did cost me time and caused me an inconvenience. It wasn't my job to make sure that all the tires on a rental car were properly inflated. Honestly, if I didn't have to drive to Seattle, I wouldn't have bothered with it. But, safety first! Let's see if there's going to be any administrative issues when I return the car at SEA at which point, I might have to change my rating. Fingers crossed!! read more

1 star is too high of a rating, Do not use Avis at PDX airport or any Avis location if this is how they do business. They stoled $480 from us, we had prepaid a car rental that they refused to provide for us. They refused to give us a refund. They also refused to make even a slight adjustment to the prepaid rental agreement to solve their lame excuse to refuse us the rental car we prepaid for in full. They outright stole our money, the manager lady there was as cold as ice about it showing zero empathy and just said oh well it's not my problem shrugging her shoulders. It was by far the worst customer service we had ever seen. One of the worst thefts by a business we had experienced and their lame excuse was that credit card used as the deposit when you pick up the rental car, the Avis desk claimed it has to be in the exact same name as the listed driver however their rental contract and website at the time did not state that. It only said a credit card will be required for a deposit. There were multiple credit cards they could have taken, even the person who paid for the car was there, but they refused them all. They refused to change that person who paid the rental fee in full to be the driver. There are many other low reviews on here for false damages or charges for adding gas fees to people who had no damage or filled up the tank right before dropping off car. They probably charged us the $480 for the 8 days while turning around that night or the next day and renting the same car to someone else. Their practices are unethical, unscrupulous and deceptive. Avis claimed they could not make any changes because they said it was rented through a third party which is what Citi Card travel indicated to us also when we called them during fiasco, conveniently this so called third party only briefly mentioned on our rental agreement. This is a message from Rocket Travel, Inc for Citibank N. A. was mentioned only once on our rental agreement but with no phone number and no contact info. Here is the deal, never do business with these people. Never reserve a rental car the says you will be charged in full 48 hours before picking it up, never pay in advance, stick with renting from Costco that has a cancel anytime policy or AAA or direct from rental sites using their discount codes but I hope no other customers ever gets ripped off like we did by Avis at PDX. PS after spending 2.5 hours at the rental terminal trying to solve this problem the manager lady called security on us to get us out of there but we were already leaving anyway. we had to take an Uber from the airport and Ubers on our trip costing an additional $250 in uber Uber/Lyft fees due to Avis refusing to give us our rental car or a refund. So now we are out $730 due to Avis incompetence. we never received a rental car or a refund, the emotional stress Avis caused trying to ruin our entire vacation would probably count in the thousands of dollars of damages, stay as far away as possible from Avis at PDX or any Avis if this is how they do business. read more

Zero stars. This place is shady AF. We got a charge for $159 because our gas tank was supposedly only 3/8 full. We disputed it with our credit card company, we even had proof that we were at the gas station 4 miles down the road filling it before our return time. Also, in what world does just over half a tank of gas cost $159??? The check in was terrible and took over 30min, the car they gave us was completely different than what we booked, and then they charge us even though we returned the car with a completely full tank of gas. Very sad to read all of the negative reviews about this place, but I guess I was quite lucky. I ordered the vehicle type I wanted, paid for it, and became a "Preferred" member online. Not sure what that means, but I think all you have to do is order the rental, pay for it in advance, and sign up to become "Preferred." Upon landing at PDX, Avis is quite a distance away from the main gates. However, I appreciated not having to hop onto any type of shuttle just to get a rental. The process was easy: arrive to the second floor "Preferred" area, have the same credit card used in the original payment for the rental, have a driver's license, hop into the rental. The VW Jetta I rented only had 600+ miles on it. It appeared relatively clean, despite someone leaving remnants of what appeared to be tape on the interior of the front windshield. That's the only thing that made this experience lose one star - there should have been more attention to detail prior to allowing me to drive this car off the lot. The total cost of my rental for about 10 hours in PDX was approximately $100, which included insurance in case I drive the vehicle into the ocean or return it with one tire on fire. Returns were easy enough - just drive it to the Avis Rental Return at PDX and walk back to the gates. There is staff there to scan the vehicle's bar code, give you a receipt, and you could be on your way. read more

Avis Portland left us stranded in the middle of the night. We called Avis weeks in advance because we saw that our flight would be arriving later than originally planned, around 1 am instead of 11:30. We were assured that the counter had our flight number and would track the flight to ensure they're OPEN for the last arrivals. This turned out to be a lie. We arrived on the last flight and by the time we got to the Avis counter, nobody was there and we were told we had to come back the next morning. We had not arranged any travel for that night as we had been told explicitly by Avis that it wouldn't be necessary. This was extremely disruptive to our trip and we are VERY dissatisfied with Avis customer service. Would be zero stars if possible. read more

After waiting an hour in line, didn't have the van we pre-paid for and was given a vehicle that wouldn't hold our stroller. Had to go back to desk to try to find vehicle that would hold kids and stroller as originally paid for. Total wait time for rental car has been over 2 hours and still haven't received a vehicle. I understand things are tough, but for the amount they're charging you should at least get the vehicle you pre-pay for! I'm a new customer and unfortunately this experience will make me choose a different company next time. Garbage Company, Garbage employees. Prepaid $1600 for a car rental and they told me to bring a debit/credit card when i arrive to make a deposit of $250. I get there and the guy in front tells me they only accept credit card. I only had debit card. i said when i talked with you guys in the phone they said debit card is fine. He said well they gave you the wrong information and there was nothing he could do since i didn't have a credit card. now have to wait 10 days to get my refund and don't have a rental car when i need one. Nice guy tacked on 10-15 min time for my rental time. Upgraded me as I was not eligible to earn AK miles, for some reason. Super easy in and out for the car, which was 98% clean. I have never experienced such unhelpful employees. When we checked in we waited on line for over an hour. It took no less then 20 min per person. Once we got up to the front it seemed like the 2 woman working didn't know that they were doing at all. We had a coupon and she literally said "I don't know what to do with this" after a half hour of frustration she said she couldn't read it and wanted us to read the coupon to her... she didn't know what number to put in the computer, had trouble finding our reservation , etc, etc. it seemed crazy to me. When we brought the car back instead of someone being there to take it or just leave the keys in the car we had to wait in line again. We were 5th in line with 1 person working. It took 45min per person at the counter and it wasn't long before the line stretched further than I could see. This was absolutely crazy. read more

Worst employees, car smelled of cigarette smoke, terrible customer service & oil change light was on entire vacation. The WORST experience with a car rental. Upon my arrival, I asked a simple question about a payment method and the employee raised her voice at me, grabbed a sign and shouted how "it's our policy! Don't blame me! ETC." mind you, I asked a small polite question. She went on how she's having "a bad day". Eye roll. So unprofessional. I was also traveling with my two little kids all day and night, we were exhausted. A woman behind us in line stood up for us and told the Avis agent off. She then felt bad and finally apologized. I was over it. NEXT, WAS A NIGHTMARE. She gave me a car filled with cigarette smoke and freshly sprayed fabreeze. It was disgusting. I went back into the office and asked nicely for another vehicle. THEN, apparently the man who cleans or brings the cars up for guests got offended because I wanted a new vehicle ?? He, the employee, got furious with us and then drove a few vehicles near me outside REVVING the ENGINES AND DRIVING Drastically absurd in a small parking garage. I feared for my safety standing there in front of the Avis customer service area. There were times he was so close to hitting other vehicles near by too. How is this even happening ?!? Don't like your job ? Quit. I couldn't believe what was happening. Oh and the damn oil change was on our entire vacay. Ugh. Never again Avis. This was Sep. 8th, 2020. @ 11PM. I was excited to rent a vehicle through Avis, because I was able to reserve the perfect vehicle for my family. However, upon arriving at 10:30 pm with 4 sleepy children in tow, the vehicle they provided me with had a check engine light on. Because of the inconvenience, the woman at the counter provided me with a mini van to accommodate my family. The van, however, was quite dirty inside. Although it was bothersome, it was now past 11:30 and I needed to get my kids in bed. The woman said I DID NOT have to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas because of the inconvenience. She wrote a note on my receipt and signed it with the initials "RL" per "Chan"'s request. Cool, I thought. Half way into our vacation the oil change light began blinking incessantly. I returned the vehicle, and the guy said I was good to go. Come to find out, I was charged a total of $805, when my agreed upon amount was $580 for 11 days. After much back and forth, they finally refunded me $154, still owing me $80 which I have not seen. Suffice to say, I would not recommend renting any vehicle through Avis. read more

I thought Id give Avis another shot since the price to rent is pretty good. I highly doubt they do much maintenance checks on their cars. This was second time i went to my rental and it had "safety inspection needed " message. Tires were all inflated to 30 pounds except one which was at 40. I will spend the extra money next time somewhere else. read more
