Back in May, my wife and I were to begin our long awaited Route 66 trip. Our fear was that we would get an older model car and that we would be more worried about the car than seeing all the sights along the way. To alleviate that fear we went to this Budget office the day before, to see if there was any way of securing a newer model car. The rep at the desk said that he could not guarantee what cars he would have the next day, which sounded reasonable. So we came back the next day with our fingers crossed. The rep we spoke to the day before wasn't there, but the rep asked us, " are you the ones doing the Route 66 trip" ? We said, yes we are. " Well, I have a note here to save the brand new Toyota Camry Hybrid for you." Needless to say we were more than pleased. It made our Route 66 trip even more enjoyable. Promised myself I would write this review when we got back. Although this is late, that does not diminish what appreciation we have for that rep that worked on that Wednesday. Avis is unjustly using its power as a $5 billion company to over bill me. I rented an SUV in Costa Rica and the car was displaying errors soon after rental. I bought the extra auto insurance through Avis which cost 3X more than the car itself. Ultimately the car broke down in a rural, high elevation area (far from any body of water) and left me and my family stranded. Rather than accepting that the car had an issue or that the Avis insurance should be applied, they are billing me $6000 for the breakdown and claim I drove the car through a large body of water which is not at all true. Without an insurance company to represent me (Avis controlled the insurance), it is just me, a formerly loyal customer against this international company. Avis is using its power to pressure my credit card to bill me. Rather than doing the right thing and work with their insurance company or the car manufacturer, they have disempowered me and are coming after me as an individual. We reserved a car months in advance & came to pick it up. Pick up was very easy our paperwork was complete and we were in a new rental in 10 minutes. We had a clean 2024 infinity Q 80. The car was luxurious, had plenty of room for our luggage and a third row of seats. It was easy & comfortable to drive. read more

Altogether a positive experience. The person running the show here was good at their job, and above all else, expedient. I appreciated that as I had my family in tow and didn't want to take the morning just to get our car. He took us down to the weird basement parking garage because we had reserved car seats and let us pick the appropriate ones for their ages. Side note, I had tried to call in advance to confirm this but kept getting the national line and they had no real info. For parents reading this, they keep a heap of them and you can specify when you get there, provided you had a general car seat reserved. We got the rear-facing for our 3 year old, and a booster with a back for our 7 year old. Our car (Nissan Altima) was kind of a piece of junk. I'm glad I took video because before we even set foot in it, there were some burns, some fender benders all around, and generally just not in the best shape. Kinda overthinking itself on technology too, with the cruise control and other features not being super intuitive, and CarPlay not working for us throughout our time with it. Anywho, got out of these just fine and dropped it up in Grand Rapids Airport and it got us where we needed to go. Nice to have options in downtown Chicago and this worked out well. Last thing, I booked on Costco Travel which seemed to consistently provide the best overall price and packaging for rental cars in my experience. read more

Quality/Quantity - Ordered a 4 door sedan, got an SUV. If you are following, we do not like traveling with a SUV, especially when using the car to drive out of state as it becomes a target for thieves. All they had were SUVs. Good news is that we had no problems on this trip. Easy and quick check-in, even easier and faster check-out. When we brought the car back, we got a text immediately and then an email receipt. Atmosphere - Downtown Chicago, much more convenient than having to go back to the airport to get a car. No bathrooms, so plan accordingly. Service - Good, quick, and efficient. We use Avis when in Las Vegas often. In Vegas, they have a Fast Break program where we can just walk to our car and drive out of the lot. And we would show paperwork and ID to security on our way out. Also, spouses drive free. Price - Approximately $50 a day. Where do I begin? Visited the location a couple of weeks ago and was immediately greeted with dismal service. Brushed it off and continued providing the necessary info to pick up the vehicle in which I had reservation. My reservation had been made with a card that I discontinued due to an erroneous charge from a what appeared to be a company posing as Avis. When I arrived to the location, I forgot that particular card had been discontinued and so it was declined. Before I could even ask the "employee" at the counter if I could use a different card, he rudely informed me that I would need the physical card in order to proceed. Mind you I've rented from the location at least 10 times of the last past year, they have a copy of my ID and he did not even try to inquire if I had another card. I asked him if he was the manager, and he acknowledged himself not as the manager, but as the owner of location. In every single time I have rented from the location prior to this last visit, each and every one of the employees were so warm and welcoming and extremely helpful. It took being helped by the owner to receive the absolute worse and rudest service I've ever received at any Avis I've ever been to and I travel very frequently to locations throughout the US and Avis has been my preferred car rental company, maybe because they service and ease of picking up vehicles. I feel bad for having to leave such a poor review, because the employees themselves are amazing, but due to the lack of leadership and the lack of respect and decency of the owner, I will no longer be using this location ever. I will walk out to wherever I need to go if I have to. Not only is it super important to set an example as a manager/owner, it is also vital to acknowledge that you appreciate your customers ....I refuse to support a business in which the owner clearly is not concerned with the satisfaction of his customers. Went to Midway Airport paid the extra $$$ and received the outstanding customer service I am accustomed to receiving and I was in an out within 10 mins and received great service. Rented a car through Expedia and it was relatively quick and easy. I was surprised, though, that the person who came in a few minutes after us left several minutes before--perhaps they were part of a special status tier. We used a discount that was offered through Expedia for a free second driver, and the woman who helped us said twice that there was no such discount, after I told her that was the entire reason we booked with them. Luckily she had a coworker standing at the other end of the counter who at that time didn't have a customer, because THAT coworker confirmed it was a valid discount and told her how to note it in their system so we wouldn't be charged for a second driver. The car we got was very comfortable, and returning was very quick--I was in and out within 5-10 minutes. It's not really the easiest location to get to, but it's doable, and there are a couple spaces just outside on Clark for parking if needed when being dropped off. In my case, needing to get set up with a second driver, we had to park the car to both go in and provide driver's licenses so the parking spot was quite handy. And once you're done, Lower Wacker is less than half a block away so you can avoid additional traffic! read more

I haven't rented cars too often through big name companies, but I feel like the experience that my friend and I had is probably pretty par for the course. We received a phone call a few hours prior to our rental time, from a gentleman from Avis telling us that there were no cars available at the location we reserved from and that he would need to pick us up and take us to a different location. I knew from looking at other locations online before that the other location was going to be back the direction we were coming from and I kept trying to ask him if he could just pick us up from where we were instead of from our original Avis location, because I knew he'd be backtracking. He kept cutting me off and wouldn't let me explain what I was trying to say, so finally I just agreed. Sure enough, he picked us up from the original Avis location and drove right back by where we walked from (with luggage). So silly. Once we arrived to the new Avis location, I was called in and the front desk person had no idea what I was talking about when I told him that we were from another location adn kept saying they were out of cars. Eventually, he understood what I was saying, that we didn't just walk in off the street, that we were brought there from another Avis employee and he said "ohhhhh and then found me on a spreadsheet". It was really weird and caused frustration and panic intially that didn't need to be there. We were then sent to talk to his superior and she was really rude at first and then proceeded to soften up a bit to us, but was opening annoyed at her colleagues. Sighing and slamming her phone down. It was so awkward. It took about 45 minutes from the time we arrived to actually getting our car, and 1 hour and 15 minutes including drive time from the other Avis location. So instead of getting our car at 2:00 like we were supposed to, we didnt' drive out of the parking garage until a little after 3:00. We then returned our car around that time a few days a later and I had a $170 charge on my card for an extra day since they still had the time as 2:00 on our file. When I called customer service they thankfully did not argue and took that charge off, but it was just another unnecessary hassle. read more

Rental contract # 753096223 Terrible experience. Rented at O'Hare Airport and pre-paid for the rental. Was told I would not be charged add'l as long as I made no changes to the Reservation...which I did not. Still, they charged my card an additional $67 with no explanation for the charge. At check-in no explanation that if their was a credit due on the "prepaid reservation" AVIS keeps it. Numerous charges appeared on my bill with no explanation. No explanation from the agent when picking up the car about how tolls are handled, or how to avoid them or the options available. I received an email telling me if I had any questions or needed assistance to contact their representative whose name and email address was provided. Attempted to call and speak with them but learned they had left the company "months ago". Never again will I rent an AVIS vehicle. read more

I rented a car in August and when we got in it the smell of smoke hit us. We called the attendant over and he just sprayed some air freshener in the car and said that should work. On the two days later we returned the car with no damage and got on the plane. While 3 months later I get a letter in the mail saying they were going to charge my credit card for damages to the car. I called their customer service and explained to them that the car was not damaged when I returned it. They said there was no physical damage, but there was a crack in the canister underneath the car. So we had to get it fix. I said so that was the smell? So you are tell me that if the car needed new spark plug or struts. You would consider that damage and the customer will have to pay for the repair? I asked for pictures of the damage and they told me they did 3 months of an extension investigation, but no pictures were taken in the process only a billing invoice was created. This location only takes credit cards and not debit card. They referred me to the Budget at 335A S Franklin St. This location does take debit cards but wanted to do a soft credit check and put a $200 hold for seven business days. They had no cards available at this location and it was already too late to refund my money. Just an overall bad experience!! read more

Me and my gf rented a car from Monday 3pm to Tuesday 8pm. At pickup location in Traverse city employer told us that our coast will be $97. Tommorow, on the day of the drop off we find out that previous employer put the wrong information about hour on drop off location, so we needed to pay extra one day rent. At the end of our service at Avis rent a car our bill was $599. They didn't return the deposit and our expected cost was 3 times bigger in total. Howewer if you decide to call customer support they will just reconnect to another customer support. And if you somehow reach out to billing department you will speak with a very very rude women that is going to hang up in the middle of your sentence. Obviously they have hidden costs and taxes that you're going to find out at the end of your journey. Unproffesional customer service unwilling to talk with you and calling you "my friend". Another great experience with Avis. Please note, I had picked up and dropped off at this location. I had received my car on line, which is very user friendly. I try to avoid dealing with centralized reservation systems. Even when I had to modify the reservation, it was very easy. When I had picked on the car, I was greeted by couple friendly representatives. The representative who checked me in was very personable and professional. I wish I could remember her name. I had called the Avis reservation, however, they were unable to assist me and I was not able to get through to the local office. Even though she was not able to answer my question regarding setting up iPod usage, she found someone who was able to answer the question. She went above and beyond to assist this customer. I had received the car category that I had requested. No pressure to upgrade. I was able to locate the car without any problems The garage staff was courteous from departure time to the time I had dropped off the car. I would recommend this location for car rental. Yes, I've had an issue in the past, not with the representatives, it was with the car and then follow up with the manager. She then proceeds to check out the car with my significant other but tells me I have to wait outside because only one customer inside at a time.. She also said that with an attitude! after she printed out the paperwork, we head downstairs to get the truck but were told that same truck was rented out already so "we have to go back upstairs" because guess what? Nice location in the heart of the city. It's a small one though so be prepared to wait a bit in line for pickup. They are following COVID guidelines to a T - all staff wearing masks and social distancing and there is a barrier at the counter. They only allow one customer in the lobby at a time. I've rented here many times over the past year and always had a good experience except once when customer service quickly fixed a billing issue. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The cars I've gotten are always super clean, with a large touchscreen/camera feed and well maintained. I've gotten lots of free upgrades to larger vehicles without asking too. read more

I had some fears about renting from here given the reviews. But, it was the closet Avis rental to our hotel so it was our Avis. We had a medium wait at check in, with one other guest before us. There was no preferred line but, that was ok. We were off-peak hours @ 1ish on a Monday. I could see this location being more difficult at peak times. When we got to the garage bit downstairs the rep said he needed to take the car for gas. So, we had an additional wait. But, he was super apologetic about it and that counts. By and large every rep we dealt with was friendly. And, often that's the most important part! I think we got out of here, more of less, in 30 minutes total. This location is Budget/Avis. Budget is usually my go to when renting a car. I've always had good experiences, so when I was planning my Chicago trip I found the one nearest our hotel and booked it. I had looked on Yelp but couldn't find anything because I didn't know it was with Avis. Once I saw the reviews I was scared. This place sounds terrible! I made note of the problems others had and prepared myself for the worst. To my surprise my experience couldn't have been better. I reserved and prepaid online (google coupon codes!). When we picked up there was no line. I just showed my id/credit card and was handed my paperwork (Fastbreak members should never have to sign at Fastbreak locations). You take the elevator down to the garage and find your car. I reserved a standard vehicle. I ended up with a Jeep Compass which was a small SUV. At no time did I get one of those papers to circle any dents or dings. That was different than I am used to. I took pictures and video of the car because I was paranoid about the reviews. When I returned the car a few days later I made sure to get there early and again took pictures and video just in case. I was checked in at the garage immediately and within minutes was on my way. It's been over 2 weeks and no additional charges have been added to my card. I would definitely rent from here again. read more

Do not rent here. Be warned first and foremost, they have zero customer service, you cannot contact the location directly via phone. They even restrict entry to their office to only the person on the rental agreement which causes a line out door into the building vestibule and onto the street. When I arrived I was told they did not have the vehicle for me that I reserved, but offered me a minivan in replacement. This was fine however upon receiving the vehicle it did not have a full tank of fuel. The person checking out the car at the garage exit was totally rude and dismissive and was on a personal phone call while supposed to be directing traffic and checking rental aggreements. I documented the fuel condition with photographs. I then returned the vehicle with MORE fuel than was in it when I received it and was still charged a 189 usd fueling fee for being "about 3 gallons below full". Totally absurd. I called to get this reversed and was told the pickup location charged the fee and since they don't answer the phone I needed to call the 1-800 number. It only took me two attempts and plenty of time dealing with the automated phone tree for their corporate number to get this resolved. Bottom line: budget is a disorganized mess. Overbooking for rental cars is a completely unacceptable practice. Stay away if you value your time. read more

I found the agent (manager?) to be unfriendly and generally angry at the world. Reporting a misconduct by the location Manager Rolando Trisilo at 214 North Clark Street (at Wacker), North Loop Downtown, Chicago, IL 60601 location on June 9. As a preferred customer, I always use Avis for my travel. I picked the car at MKE downtown area and was to return the car at N Clark St, Chicago. As we arrived at the Clark st location, we noticed that there is only ONE way for all exit and entry so we slowing pulled in, two cars were already facing the exit. We stopped to understand what was going on and we pulled down the windows to get some direction. A security guard (not AVIS representative) started giving directions, he was brash and started shouting directions. The space was really tight so we had to slowly maneuver the car but the security guard had no patience for that. His voice raised, body language raged as he roared COMMANDS. We felt belittled and asked Alex (security guard) to pipe down to which he flew his hands in the air but did not stop. After parking the car, an Avis representative (Stephanie) strolled to our car and we asked for the name of the guard to which she said she doesn't know and the moment we turned our backs she started chatting with the same person (we got his name later at the desk). We wanted to raise this unacceptable behavior with the Manager but didn't know that his demeanor was even worse - completely unprofessional and disgusting. When we asked for the manager, Rolando, didn't even ask what was wrong, how can he help etc.? Customer service 101 but he started on the defensive horrifically. His tone was rude, unpleasant and intense. He started schooling on how we were not driving in the right way, WITHOUT CHECKING FACTS. We were like really, since there is only one way in & out. I will not lie, my husband and I loosed my cool at this point. It got ugly with him. To give Rolando, a quick fact check, my husband walked him to the parking lot in the basement so he could walk Rolando through the sequence of events. Rolando was dumbfound but it was too late. We had to reserve a car for next day but left fuming. I have videos and pictures to prove how distasteful and downright disgusting Rolando's behavior - never have I come across someone so incompetent and ignorant in my past short 10 years of professional life. We were on a trip with friends to Chicago and this episode definitely ruined the first day. I chose not to pick the car at Clarks but at Midway airport next day instead because I didn't want another face-off with that foul man. Imagine the inconvenience it caused us. Please note that I AM NOT PAYING FOR THE CAR other than the fuel. I would like to see that Ronaldo is coached on customer service/ a strict disciplinary action taken against him. I'm not sure if I can hold this against Avis because I've rented from Avis in Michigan and it's been great, but in Chicago it's not very good. The receptionist basically didn't want to make conversation. I asked her several times what the cost was going to be before I rented the car, but she just said "wait for the print out". Seriously?? That's your level of customer service? Great. I rented a Cadillac CTS and returned it 2 hours late. It cost me $250 ($100 extra for the 2 hours)!! Most other places make exceptions for regular Avis customers, but not in Chicago. This is really sad because I travel a lot and need to rent cars often. I'm going to try National / Enterprise and see if their loyalty programs are better than Avis. P.S: They mostly have GM vehicles here and they're not in very good shape. :( read more

The only reason this place is getting 2 stars and not -3 stars (one star is too high for the customer service experience with JUDY) is because of the manager Michael and the other CS rep Serena. Thank you Michael and Serena for making up for the embarrassing, pathetic "service" of incompetent Judy. This location is a joint Avis/Budget rental facility. This review concerns my Budget reservation with the Avis/Budget employee Judy. JUDY is a liability to any company she works for and should be fired immediately. I was treated as if checking in was an inconvenience from the moment I checked in and said, "Hi. How are you today?" She cut me off before I even finished that and said, "name?" It went downhill very quickly from there. She was snippy, rude, and once I decided to treat her with the same "courtesy" by being short with her, she just handed my license and credit card to Serena. When I asked Serena why I had been turned over to her, she said, "I'm not sure, actually." That's when I went from frustrated to very upset, because Judy had made me start the process completely over with another rep. Apparently Judy can handle dishing it out, but certainly couldn't take it when her own attitude is given back to her. I got in a verbal altercation with Judy about how terrible her customer service was and her ridiculous attitude to customers, since I had seen the customer before me get treated with the same disrepect. She is apparently not used to customers calling her out. She looked quite surprised when I told her she needed to change her attitude. She called her manager, Michael, which I insisted was a great idea. After hearing the situation, he offered me an upgrade (WHICH I DECLINED), because I was simply interested in being treated like a human being, not free upgrades. My family and I have been Budget clients for a very long time, and I will go out of my way to check every rental car business in the area before I return back to them. I have never in my life been treated by an employee of a company like that, and I will make sure to write and call the corporate offices of both Avis and Budget immediately after I finish writing this to let them know what a horrible representative of their company they have employed. Hopefully, they will give her some slap on the wrist, and she'll start treating customers like what they are: THE PEOPLE WHO PAY HER SALARY and people who are in control of whether she keeps or loses her job. Again, thanks Michael and Serena. You are the ONLY reason I would even consider returning to rent a car from you guys again. For the love of god do NOT rent from this location. The past week since I returned the car has been hell trying to figure out all of these random charges I have received, I have called over five times, told twice they would take care of the wrongful extra charges, and just now have had the charges been reversed. Thank god we didn't use a debit card! They would have taken all of our money! I woke up a few days after returning the car to three extra charges for $2,873.87, $3,069.90 and $300. No one can tell me what the first two are for (how does a company not have a paper trail for charges that large?), the last one is for an extra hour when I returned my car EARLY. I have gone over my credit card limit and been charged by my credit card company because of these people. I received no apologies or refunds for the headaches and trouble they have put me through. Great experience! I walked in on a busy Friday hoping to get a car without a reservation due to a bad experience with their competitor (whom I had a reservation with but walked out). The wait wasn't long. The lady who helped me was so nice & kind. She put me at ease because I was stressing about missing my competition (on my birthday) that I had to drive to. I don't remember her name but she was an older lady with a cute strawberry blonde-ish bob hairdo. Great customer service. I get the car and it's a new, very clean car. We have had two bad experiences with Avis. The first one was when they gave him a car that had an expired sticker. We only found out when we saw a traffic citation/ticket on the windshield which said the ticket was expired. The second incident was more dangerous. We lost our way while driving in the suburbs and was stopped by a cop. When he ran the registration, we were informed that the car plate did not match the car! Can you imagine that? We told the cop that it was a rental and showed him the contract so he let us go. Scary. read more

The day before Easter, we realized the train didn't go out to the suburb we wanted to go to see our family on Easter Sunday. I went online and found that this was the only rental car location near my condo that offered rental service on Sundays. I reserved an "intermediate" level car online and the next day my BF went to pick it up and they were out of that level car, so we got a cool SUV at no additional charge. Pick-up and return went smoothly and we were in and out in no time. Will definitely use them again. read more

I have NEVER had such a DISGUSTINGG experience as I just had at Avis!! Times have been tough during COVID and I dipped into my emergency fund to make sure I could pre pay for a car for a special family event. We arrive for pickup and Surprise! NO CARRSSS. You. had. One. Job. Avis. Now my fiancé is crying - my pre payment is not being refunded - and we are desperately searching for a back up transportation option. Never do business with Avis under Any circumstance! Now that we sold our car and rent cars regularly, Avis is one of our two main alternatives. Rates are sometimes good, sometime not. Service is always poor. Yesterday when I mentioned two problems with the car, the person checking me in said, "Well, I don't know anything about that." and printed out my receipt. No notation of the issue. Why bother asking? But their hours on Sundays do make them appealing. read more
