Completely irate at the moment. Was in a car accident driving through New York on my way home to Maryland, so needed a rental car. Ended up having to rent from Avis in Ithaca - 90 minutes from where I was stranded - because it was Thanksgiving weekend. Not their fault, but now I think I know why they were the only ones who had cars available.
The folks at that location were great - my beef is with the company as a whole, and whoever I talked to when calling their 800 number reservation line.
I told them I wanted to drop it off in my home town in Maryland in three days - figuring I'd need the time to sort out insurance for the accident. They read the address off the screen to me verbally, and I agreed that was the place. Fabulous, I was on my way.
The next day I was home, and got insurance sorted out, so wanted to drop the car off 2 days early. I then noticed that the drop off location that got printed on the rental agreement was a town in Maryland 60 miles away - and when I called to let them know that I a) wanted to drop it off early, and b) still wanted to drop it off where I told them I would to begin with, not the address on the agreement, they a) said I don't get any kind of refund for early drop off, and b) they wanted to charge me a change fee for "changing" the drop off location!
So okay, my bad for not double checking the address on the rental agreement when I signed it, but I had been in an accident, had spent half the day wandering Southern New York looking for anywhere with a rental car available, and was a bit tired. They made the change without notifying me, and they want me to pay for it! And they want me to pay for 2 days of car rental when I won't have the car, during which time they easily could turn it around and rent it again - getting paid double for that time.
Agent and agent's manager were completely inflexible. I'll stick with Enterprise from now on, and God help anyone who is in an emergency situation and has only Avis to choose from. read more
