This winery has a very pretty scenic view of Seneca Lake with outdoor seating on their patio and large windows inside. We visited on a Sunday early afternoon. It was not very crowded. But we appreciated the peace and quiet. We ordered the pimento cheese dip and artichoke dip. We also had a glass of a semi-dry riesling and a dry riesling. Don't let the name fool you, CLR is as far from pretentious as you can get, as evidenced by their pairing of wine flights with locally-made cookies (produced by an actual doctor, so you know they must be healthy. A very nice winery to enjoy nice wine while taking in the lake view. Our favorite wines here are the rose wines they make from Cab Franc, Pinot Noir etc. I believe they use a different process than other wineries in the area or perhaps it is just the location of their vines but it is a unique wine. Chateau LaFayette Reneau was a stop suggested by our driver yesterday and I am glad he suggested it, but more so for the view & the cheese and less for the wine. Truthfully, I found their wine to be very average and underwhelming. However, they did a cheese pairing that was to die for. They paired four cheeses with two different wine options each and you could choose the wine that best went with your palette. It was fun and I loved the cheese. CLR is settled right on Seneca Lake with some spectacular views, but it's definitely not the best wine on the trail. read more

Great winery with lakeside views. I enjoyed this winery, the tasting room looks out to Seneca Lake and there is a beautiful deck outside. The service was as sweet as the wine, a bit sickly sweet and artificial, but not tart or sour. To accompany all of the wines, there are nice large bowls of oyster crackers. Although these crackers are home to the Finger lakes, I've never seen such crackers in abundance. The wines are quite sweet, so it's best to come here on a hot summer day and enjoy a nice glass on the deck. I recommend going to Atwater Estate Vineyards, next door. It has more of homey a mom and pop feel with lake side views and also a deck. As a bonus, you get a free magnet and post card for checking in at Atwater! read more

With so many wineries in the Finger Lakes, this is one you don't want to miss! Chateau Lafayette Reneau is a gorgeous winery overlooking Lake Seneca. The tasting room is a restored barnhouse and it is classy and beautiful. We sat outside on their balcony to see the beautiful view! The seats are picnic benches! We ordered 2 wine flights and some snacks to pair! We ordered a white wine flight & a sweet wine flight (my personal favorite!) You can really tell they put love into their wines. We actually ended up picking 2 wines from the sweet flight to bring home! For our snacks we ordered salami, feta, and italian crackers. We thought that they would be presented on a board but it ended up just being the packages and we had to take it out (assuming because of covid), but this ended up being fine because we had leftover crackers that we brought right with us. We spent a day on the Seneca Wine Trail, and we had a great time at Chateau LaFayette Reneau. We thought they were unique in the wine tasting options - they had the typical six wines for $5, but they also had a wine/cookie pairing and a wine/chocolate pairing. We selected both the cookie and chocolate pairings, and we were very pleased. The cookies are from a local bakery, and they were delicious! And, of course, the wines paired beautifully. We particularly enjoyed the peanut butter cookie paired with the Concord wine (tasted just like PB&J). As expected, most of the wines in the cookies/candy pairings were sweet. This is one of my favorite wineries in the area. The property is absolutely stunning. They have great outdoor seating overlooking Lake Seneca. Sister winery to Glenora, came here for a free wine tasting. We were allowed to choose six samples from a variety of their wines. Most of the wines were very good to include their Pinot Noir Rosé and the Meritage (excellent) but ended up buying their late harvest rieslings, which had a very similar taste to an ice wine. read more

Chateau Lafayette Reneau is one of the recommended wine bars by Decanter, and is known for their award winning rieslings, chardonnays and cabernet sauvignon. After tasting a mix of these, none of them really stood out to me -- not terrible, but not great either. FYI, Chateau Lafayette Reneau is dog friendly and has a nice view of the lake. If you want to sit back, drink some wine while enjoying the views, this wouldn't be a bad place for it. read more

If you only expect to have good table wines on the sweet side that would be right where their wines in my opinion would land. We actually came to visit with no expectations whatsoever as we usually explore wineries outside of our must visit list during every trip we take to the Finger Lakes. We stopped in to taste some of their Rieslings and I can only say that the Dry versions were disappointing but the late harvest versions were on par with some of the better ones we've tasted over the years. That's why we only bought 4 bottles instead of a full case. This was our 3rd time coming to this winery and this time, we were not happy. The last two times were very informative but this time nothing. First, you couldn't pick your wines. Either white, red, semi-dry or sweet. Whichever style you picked, that was all you got. Not too big of a deal. I'm sure COVID has something to do with serving the wines this way. The bigger problem is the menu only had the names of the wine and the residual sugar - nothing else. When we asked them for a description of each wine. They said they don't do that. This is a spot in a very winery congested section of southeastern Seneca Lake (as if "winery congested" is a bad thing...LOL). Frankly the wine and location didn't move me as much as nearby Atwater did. This comes partially from the quality of the wine (ok, but nothing to write home about), and partially from the unfriendliness of the people working there, from the woman who worked the cash register to the pourer, a young guy who had a robotic personality. I had been to this winery before, about three years ago, when a fun group of Harley riders were at the tasting bar with me. At one point the (much more friendly) pourer asked us to roar for a semi-dry red they have called "Roaring Red." No roaring on this most recent visit. Don't get me wrong, it's a three star location, which is not bad. If this was the only option on the lake, I'd say it's a winner. But with so many other spots literally a stone's throw away, you can do better. read more
