Roadside assistance then said we could exchange our vehicle at the Memphis airport and made a reservation for us. We showed up and there were plenty of like vehicles, but the Memphis Avis would not let us have one because we were dropping in Dallas. Unbelievable poor customer service. Not impressed. Be aware that this location makes renting to ride-share people a priority. We turned up early hoping we could get a jump on the day and be driving away in a car at the time of our reservation, which we'd booked MONTHS in advance. In the end, we spent an hour to an hour and a half, waiting for a car to come available. Meanwhile streams of ride share drivers were coming in and leaving in minutes with a car. What the...? The ONE employee seemed nice, but ultimately, I feel like he gave us the run around and lip service. He was answering the phone, checking people out, doing it all. We sat patiently in the waiting area, looking at thumbed magazines and our phones. When he did finally find us a car, one of the ride share drivers backed into it, smashing up the bumper. Guess what? We now had to wait even longer! Unbelievable. The car we finally drove away in was of course, nothing like the car we ordered, but we liked it. However, instead of having a full tank of gas, which is standard, it had just over a quarter tank, so it wasn't long before we had to fill up on our road trip. The car was presented to us dripping wet from a quick car wash and there was still sticker residue in the windshield as it was fairly new. BEWARE SCAMMERS - Read thru other Yelp reviews about scams at this same location. So we get (2) emails reminding us to drop the keys off with my rental. Problem is, we never rented a vehicle & especially not one in another state. Many calls and over a $1000 later, we learned that two reservations had been made at this location under my spouses name using my credit card 6/5/25-6/12/25 for Uber Driver Rentals. Some AVIS Reps said it was an in person transaction, while others say it was done online. AVIS general customer support is useless by the way. Charges were steadily coming through even after we contacted them. One rep even advised that we should just ignore the emails as spam. We took matters into my own hands and called the location where the transactions were made. We spoke with Toya who said per the manager our wizard # was similar to the uber driver who rented the vehicle causing an error. When we asked how that mistake could be made because we have different names, addresses, credit card info, etc. Where was the due diligence and security protocol on part of AVIS to verify the renter? How was this supposed "mistake" done twice? No explanation. She said that the manager was processing a refund back to us, but as we waited on the confirmation email, all we kept getting was alerts that additional attempts to run the credit card were being made. We asked her what was going on and she had no explanation. Luckily, we had already alerted my credit card company. As we began to research, we found Google, Reddit & Yelp reviews from others complaining of poor service and scams at this location. We've also learned that AVIS contracts/partners with 3rd party vendors. AVIS needs to take more accountability in ensuring that their customer information is protected. I can only imagine how many dollars go unnoticed or unrecouped. Scammers are getting rich with the help of employee insiders while consumers foot the bill. We will never do business with AVIS again and am working to deactivate my WIZARD account.Do yourself a favor and RENT ELSEWHERE. read more

If a negative star review was an option that's what they would get. I never write reviews unless it is to praise a business or person, product or service. I travel for business every other week.. This business trip I started in Memphis & ended in Knoxville. Scheduled meetings. 2, 3 & 4 hour drives in between. Planned. Month or more in advance. Sales teams pulled from the field for my trainings. Being able to pick up a car I reserved and paid for in advance is crucial. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of experiencing this very high level of incompetency and complicity to deceive, inconvenience, disregard, not communicate, or not give a flying ***K about a prepaid rental reservation all the while taking advantage of a desperate person in a desperate situation. I reserved a car a month in advance to pick up at the airport. I arrived at 8:30 pm and they tell me they have NO cars and it will be a 6 hour. I thought the guy was joking. He told me he would call me. So I take an Uber to my hotel which cost $30. 6 hours later I called & they still have NO CARS. I went on Avis.com & I book and prepay for another car at the location down the street from my hotel. I show up there at 7:30 AM and they have NO CARS. I started to panic. The guy at the Madison Avenue location told me to give him a bit and he would see what he could do. He called me 30 minutes later & was able to locate a car for me in Shelby. He transferred my reservation to that location. He was my saving grace. I take another Uber which cost another $30. I was able to pick a car up there. It was a Kia Forte. It was not what I reserved but I didn't care at this point. It was dirty and it smelled like Colonel Sanders had been living in it since birth. I dropped the car off at the Knoxville airport and as my plane is about to take off I get the bill from Avis. They increased the base rate of the car by $60 & add a bunch of extra charges and fees. This Kia Forte cost me $505 for 48 hours. Plus $60 on Uber rides. My original reservation was $388 total for 3 days and it was a SUV. Avis will NEVER get another dollar of my money. I know that the Memphis area has this issue because both of my Uber drivers told me and I asked the front desk staff at my hotel. Why allow a customer to book a reservation and PAY for it when you don't have one damn car?!?! read more

This is my go to car rental spot! They always have great car options, quick service, and the online process makes it an easy transaction for me. The thing I like most is the find various was to provide discounts whether your are an AARP cardholder or an Amazon Prime member...there's some kind of perk available. I normally pick my car up from the downtown location. The staff there are super cool. It's always a welcoming environment. The cars are super clean on pickup and gassed up, ready for rental. But, again I say Avis has always been easy and convenient for me. This is from now on my go to spot! read more

You couldnt pay me to rent from Avis again. I am a first time 'renting to ride share' customer and when i tell you this company is HORRIBLE, i truly mean it. Before renting with them i had all of my credit card debt paid off, after renting from them- due to their HORRIBLE communication skills, i left in more debt than i did before! I used their app to manage my rental through it, as the rental agreement email suggested, only to find out from them that that was a big mistake. I came to them after seeing my bank account jacked up, and was basically dismissed after I told them my situation, only for them to say, "oh you shouldnt have used the app, thats why they took over $900 out at once instead of $300 a week like i told you we would. Oh and by the way, you werent supposed to extend your rental through the app (like the email says), we do that automatically since it's a ride share rental." WHY DIDNT YOU TELL ME ANY OF THIS AT THE BEGINNING?! I asked was there anything i should know, and they didnt say anything until it was too late. im am INCREDIBLY DISSATISFIED. They never pick up the phone, they are incredibly unprofessional, and are horrible at communicating pretty important information. Not to mention, I was constantly told there was a vehicle for me waiting only to find out over 6 different times that there actually wasnt a single car available for ride share, so i wouldve spent the money to get there only for there to not be one at all! I reserved a car online and when I arrived at this location my PAID reservation was denied because you have to a credit score of 750. Now they are holding my funds hostage for 3-5 when they took my money out of my account in less than 3 minutes after said reservation. This is by far the worst experience that I have had with Avis who WAS my go to for rentals. I have spoken to 5 people at their customer service number and no one is showing any professional customer service. Reserved a rental car to be picked up at 10 am. When I got there, there were about 3 people ahead of me. By the time she got to me, she said she had rented the last car and I would have to wait until someone returned a car. So I couldn't find another rental on such a short notice so I had to sit and wait in the lobby for about an hour until someone returned a car. Trip delayed and day ruined. read more

Paid for a Lincoln Continental, Received a Hyundai SUV My recent experience with Avis was terrible, it will be the last time I rent from them. Several weeks in advance of our vacation we reserved a Lincoln Continental, to be picked up from their location in downtown Memphis, TN, and returned four days later to the Memphis airport location. When we arrived at the pickup location the manager told us he did not have a Lincoln Continental, but could give us an SUV instead. I assumed he would make appropriate adjustments in the charges. That was a bad assumption. Anxious to keep our family vacation on schedule we loaded our luggage into the SUV and got on the highway. The following day I had some time, so I decided to call Avis to confirm that the charges had been adjusted. First I went to the Avis website to compare the rates for the Hyundai SUV we received vs. the Lincoln Continental we had reserved. The difference shown was $180 for the four day rental. When I called the Memphis downtown location where I had rented the car no one answered the phone. Then I called the Avis central customer service number. The service rep looked up my rental and told me no adjustment had been made in the rates. He said any adjustment needed to be made at the time of the pickup!! He claimed he could not reduce the rate but said I should return the car to the pickup location if I didn't like it. I was 150miles away from Memphis on vacation!! When I insisted on talking to a supervisor the service rep refused to make one available, I was on hold two different times for over ten minutes. He suggested that I call back in an hour. Finally the service rep offered a $20 discount, this for a $180 discrepancy!! After further argument he agreed on a $50 adjustment. When I asked how I could be sure this would be applied he said, "no problem, I'll give you a reference number." Now comes the further problem. When returning the car to the Memphis airport location I told the agent there should be a $50 adjustment to the reserved rate. She looked at me like I had an eye in the middle of my forehead. I told her, "This has been arranged with Avis customer service, here is the reference number." The agent (at the Avis check-in counter) said she had no way to use the reference number, she couldn't look it up, she couldn't reference it, it meant nothing to her. I asked her to check with someone, she made a phone call and then told me, all she could do is close out the rental at the original rate, no discount!! That's it for me, no more rentals from Avis. I advise everyone to be very careful when dealing with them. read more

Their national computers were down and they had no "contingency " plan as to how to service customers when this happens. Even though we had a reservation and a confirmation number she had to call an internal Avis number and was on hold for 40 minutes waiting to process the car rental. On top of this, they would not accept a debit card which is the only card I have. I might add it's the only card I need with every other business I deal with. In short, their processes are archaic and their contingency plans are non-existent. There is no concern for customer service and forcing customers to wait exceptionally long times is not bothersome for them. It's their way our you can take your business happily to any of their competitors! Avis has now been added to the list of companies I will avoid using in the future. read more
