Just don't use them. They don't honor your contract/reservation. Completely ruined our travel plans, we got multiple confirmations and notifications our car was ready for pick up to be told, rudely, they had no car. When we called (after having to leave the office/garage where they have no cell coverage) their Presidential Club number they suggested we try their location 7m away for a maybe car, then told us to use another rental, which we should have done to begin with. We will never use Avis again and suggest you save yourselves some trouble as well. read more

Been here twice. Both times they've had no cars available (resulting in a line of disgruntled customers). Because they have a car supply issue, they'll turn away same day reservations. Both times I settled for getting Kia Eva, but the ev charging system around dc is dogshit, and they routinely give thier evs with only 30-40 miles of range left so good luck getting anywhere. Don't bother coming here or reserving a car here. God forbid you prepay cuz they'll still tell you they don't have your car and have you wait for hours. Just go to dca instead. read more

I rented car from avis in Costa Rica, the wipers wasn't working and it was raining very heavily.. we could have died, then while returning car, i left my jacket at couch,it is 5 minutes away from Airport and shuttles comes every 10 minutes. I called and confirmed that jacket is there, they said i would get it at airport in 10 minutes only, no one showed up, i constantly kept calling. Almost 2 hours i waited. I could almost miss my flight. That was a very special jacket for me .. anyway Avis costa Rica showed that they can be greedy for such small Piece of clothing. Rented a suv from them, we always take a video of the car when we picked it up and when we turn it in, so when we turned it in it was early morning and there was a sign saying to leave the car with the keys in it, I get contacted a week later asking me to turn the car back in, good thing I had the videos, took 3 months of fighting with them to finally settle it, a month later I get an invoiced to clean the sand from the beach out of the suv, we where in Vegas, never left the hotel to go anywhere near sand, finally after 4 months it was done, never again read more

As a regular business traveller, everything about Avis has become terrible. I was once a preferred member however after repeatably being blocked out of their website and app even after entering the correct username, password, wizard number, last 4 digits of my drivers license, I have given up and use another service. Calling the phone number to get another password reset just consists of a painfully long automated process. Even as a preferred member the cars are regularly not ready, or you have to still stand in line and provide more information before you can get assigned a car and then you are often directed to the wrong spot. Really horrible experience. Tried to rent a car through Avis through the Uber application. Needed to finalize my reservation through the Avis website but ran into a myriad of errors including not being able to use my credit card because it was listed as the card on another unknown Avis account, not being able to change my credit card without cancelling and rebooking the reservation completely, and not being able to move forward through the review process. These errors made it impossible to finish my booking. Contacting customer support provided no better results. Whatever partnership Uber and Avis have is obviously not one they train their support members on. After fully explaining the issue and being transferred to separate teams 4 times, nobody could fully solve the issue after 45 minutes on the phone. The last customer support member couldn't change anything in the system so they ended up just transferring me back to the initial Avis number to start over. One of the main reasons this whole episode occurred is because I was locked into a "valet" service that meant I had to review insurance documents online before final confirmation, but given the errors above, I was not able to, and I was not able to review these documents in person as the locations available were valet only. There was no way for either me or the customer support members to alter my reservation to a pick-up location. Avis is not prepared to deal with any issues outside of any kind of standard. This experience reflected incredibly poorly on the customer service, backend systems, and communication with local pick-up locations for Avis. Wouldn't recommend anybody put themselves in a position to deal with something like this by attempting to rent with Avis. Would give zero stars if possible. read more

I strongly advise against renting a vehicle from the Avis Georgetown location. I encountered the rudest woman I've ever dealt with in my life today, October 11, 2025, at 4:45 PM. Whoever was working the counter should be disciplined or suspended. I urge Avis management to investigate this matter thoroughly. Here's what happened: I had a reservation for a compact car scheduled for 5:30 PM, but my flight arrived 30 minutes early, so I got to the Georgetown Avis at 4:45 PM. The woman at the counter told me I was too early and needed to wait until 5:30, which I accepted without issue. Shortly after, a group of teenagers came in, and one of them had a prepaid reservation for a Camry. The woman told them there were no cars available except a minivan, but the teenager couldn't drive it because he was only 21, and the policy requires drivers to be at least 25 to rent a minivan. When the teenager tried to explain, the woman rudely dismissed him and then turned to me, saying, "You too, we only have a minivan." I explained that I had reserved my car a month in advance and had paid upfront, but she said there was nothing she could do and told me to call Avis customer service. When I asked for her name, she became irate, told me I wouldn't be getting any car, and even refused to let me take the minivan when I offered to take it. She flatly said "No" with an angry expression. Fortunately, a gentleman stepped in, and I explained the situation to him, mentioning that I'm an Avis President's Club member. I also told him how the woman's behavior had even reduced the teenagers to tears. I demand that Avis investigate this incident, and I will be filing a complaint with consumer protection agencies about the poor service and treatment at this location. read more

Requested an intermediate SUV, eg, Honda CRV. Was told at rental site at white plains NY airport all they had was a Jeep grand Cherokee or other momy vans. Avis called that car intermediate, which is a joke since it's twice the size of the Honda. Turns out enterprise and other car rental outfits are doing the same switch at multiple airports (my experience). Why you might ask? The jeep grand Cherokee is selling at 20% below MSRP. I surmise the rental agencies couldn't pass up this "deal" and we are stuck with the colossal sh-- box. I'd use a negative star if Yelp offered one. read more

I rented a car from Avis at the Minneapolis airport. The counter staff were very nice, but it went WAY downhill from there. The first vehicle had mechanical issues and wasn't ok to drive. The second vehicle was worse. The third vehicle was fine, but in the process of exchanging vehicles I had to deal with a grouchy rude rep on the vehicle level and then they over-charged me by 3x my original contract due to botched paperwork. That was a month ago and I've made a dozen phone calls to try and get it straightened out. I've rented more than 50 vehicles as I travel frequently and this has been one of the worst experiences I've had. read more

I will walk on hot lava on the surface of the sun before I rent a car from Avis at their Reno Airport location. The line to rent the car was blocking the hallway of the airport. It took TWO HOURS to finally get my car (I had reserved in advance and entered my drivers' license information and credit card info the day before). Once through the line you are told to go out to the parking lot where you want ANOTHER HOUR for your car - all in all a THREE HOUR PROCESS. Only two employees were working the desk, and they had to call out to the lot where the cars are kept after each reservation. I "reserved" a four door car, but it took so ridiculously long to get ANY car, I was stuck with a Camaro. Which would have been find had we been a two person group, but we had to fit four in the car. I took the Camaro out of desperation, we could not wait any longer and already missed one of the activities we had planned. It is, WITHOUT QUESTION, the absolute worst customer service experience for a rental car I have ever experienced in my entire life. They have no incentive or desire to improve the situation. I frequently rent cars to travel and I started using Avis because this location was convenient to me and my alumni discount made it a smart option. after using this location multiple times, I am never using Avis again. The workers here are not friendly, and the cars have frequently came not fully cleaned. But honestly I was more than willing to put up with that for the price I was paying. That was until I was charged over $60 for rental insurance that I did not consent to. The employee quite literally added the insurance charge despite my saying no to it. The worker explained that it was my problem. I contacted corporate multiple times and they did nothing. This is totally unacceptable and Avis' unwillingness to solve the problem prevents me from ever wanting to use them again. I'm willing to use a competitor. read more

I will never rent a car from Avis again. About two weeks ago, I booked a 7-seater SUV online and paid using my credit card. When I arrived to pick up the SUV the next day at the WhiteOak, Maryland location, they did not have the SUV and tried to give me a minivan with 5 seats. I requested to cancel my reservation because I wanted to rent elsewhere. The site manager said I had to cancel the reservation online, as she couldn't cancel it in her computer system. I canceled the reservation online, but Avis stated that per their policy, they would not refund the full amount. When I called Avis, they said, "You should have called us before canceling online," and because I didn't call before canceling, they would not refund the full amount. I had paid $650, and Avis only refunded $500. This is a horrible company with terrible customer service. Please never consider Avis for your rental needs. read more

We recently (6/2024) rented a car from Avis out of Portland Maine. The car was fine, but we've had an unexpected problem. Unfortunately we forgot a film camera in the backseat of the car. We have attempted to contact the Avis counter in Portland and can't because their agents don't pick the listed phone # (you can only connect to an automated system). Have discovered that Avis Online Lost and Found system will not accept reports for rentals in the following states: Maine New Hampshire Montana North and South Dakota West VA Alaska Kansas Wyoming If your state isn't listed, they have no way of accepting your L&F report in their computer system! read more

After renting a car for several days where pick up and return from the Arlington office, was told by the online person that we couldn't get another car in VA and had to drive to BWI airport. Drove to the airport with only one person working with about 25 people in front of me. Once I reached the agent then I learned that the person on the phone who barely spoke English, didn't email the reservation (after repeating the email many times) and it would cost more than we wanted to pay. I rented a car from Avis last Friday, May 24, at the Atlanta airport rental car center location. the car had over 31K miles and looked pretty beat up. We were waiting at a cell lot to pick up my son and grandchildren to attend a family event, noticed the gas tank was less than full, and did take a picture of the odometer to discuss this issue later. After passing University exit on North I -85, our car totally shut down. There was no power, smoke was escaping from the under the hood, and we were in the middle lane coasting down a hill trying to get over to the right shoulder. Cars were going at a high speed, were not allowing us to move over, had my emergency flashers on, almost was hit twice, and we were concerned that we could stop in the middle of a the road. Fortunately, two Georgia state troopers were driving down the highway, so our plight, and blocked the two right lanes so we could get to the shoulder. The officers saved us. My wife called Avis as the officers and I examined the car. There was no transmission oil, the oil was low and smelled burnt, and the officers pointed out that this problem was ongoing, due to burnt markings around the engine. Avis said that they would send a tow truck, and that we were on our own to get to our hotel. It was approximately 7:30 pm, our grandkids were hungry for dinner, so we wanted to get to a restaurant. Avis stated that they do not have the manpower to bring us a new car, and the officers took our luggage and family in the back of cruisers to a nearby taco place. These officers were amazing and went way beyond the call of duty. We were all tired and stressed, and did not wish to go back to the airport for another car. We were staying in the Emory area, called Avis about bringing me a car from a Avis rental dealer near us, and were told there were no cars, and I had to go to the airport. We were in town for a family celebration, and I missed fun activities to go to the airport to get a car. I tried to contact the General Manager of the Avis airport, but there has been no return call. I hope my family can move on from this experience. I also asked the officers to send my their names so I could write a letter of gratitude to their supervisors. I rented a car from Budget last February from Budget, which is owned by Avis, and received a well driven Malibu. That car broke down after one day with transmission melt downs too. What is going on with this company? To provide no road assistance, due to labor issues, is absolutely the wrong policy. Be wary and aware of the car you rent. read more

Here is the experience during my recent car rental experience with AVIS. I booked my car rental with AVIS (picking up on APR 6, 2024 at Memphis International Airport, TN and returning in Downtown Nashville, TN on APR 9, 2024). Since my flight was arriving late at night, I chose AVIS because its desk is open until 1:30 AM. In order to secure a rental, I paid in advance. I arrived at the AVIS desk at Memphis International around 11:00 PM, APR 6, 2024. AVIS rep told me that they were overbooked and no car was available. He suggested taking UBER or LIFT for further transportation. He did not provide any explanation why prepaid, i.e. already purchased product/service was given away to someone else. Instead for further questions he gave an AVIS booklet with several 1800 numbers. He also suggested to come back in the morning to check if rental car would be available We waited for 40 minutes for the Lift driver and rode 30 miles to my final destination, Cordova, TN. Upon arrival I called the AVIS customer care desk (1800 number) and was told to call back in the morning (8 AM). Representative also suggested filing a complaint online, which I did. I received a couple of standard email messages with suggestions to call back to Customer Service at 1-800 number. I called in the morning (8:15 AM) again and talked to Rick who explained to me that according to inventory 6 cars are available at Memphis International but I mustworket for me. 1st was wrong car and second did have to arrive in person to confirm that. He was not able to contact AVIS at Memphis International since they did not pick up the telephone. I can confirm that. Tried to do it by myself with similar results. As an alternative to avoid coming back to Memphis International, Rick checked out local AVIS inventory in Cordova, TN location. However, this approach was not feasible because this location does not provide one-way rental. Rick could not explain why. He transferred me to another rep named Alex. Alex told me that he is from the billing department and could not help me with rental, but will provide me with compensation for inconvenience. He said that it will come in the form of an email message with explanations in an hour. He verified my email address and telephone number. Never received such an email message from AVIS. He also refused to transfer me back to customer care. Instead of that he provided a couple 1-800 numbers (1-866-806-3637 and 1-866-5257521). Neither of them worked. This representative was not polite and cooperative at all. I called back and talked to another rep who did not provide any assistance at all and transferred me to supervisor per my request. He was very polite and cooperative. He confirmed that to receive one way rental I had to go back to Memphis International. In order to address the issue, he suggested transferring me to another group at AVIS. He also offered me to be present at the conference call with them and assist. Never happened. I was transferred to another, who told me that no cars were available to me in the entire Memphis metro area. Per my request she transferred me to the supervisor. This person was pretty rude and uncooperative. She confirmed that no cars were available in the inventory, and I had two options: go back to Memphis International AVIS location (30 miles from me) and check availability or to receive a full refund and get a car rental somewhere else. As a "courtesy", she tried to contact the Memphis International AVIS location with no response. I was also provided with reference number. The message was pretty clear: No cars are available for you at AVIS and it is your problem with your further transportation. Per my request to talk with her supervisor I was told that she was supervisor on duty and the highest level of AVIS authority at that time. After spending almost two and half hours on the telephone with AVIS representatives I decided to go back to Memphis International on my own. I arrived there around 11:00 AM on APR 7, 2024. Upon arrival, only the 3rd car worked for me. 1st was wrong vehicle; 2nd did not have gas. It took me 2 hours to leave the rental. Two days later (AP 9, 2024) at AVIS Nashville downtown drop off went pretty smoothly. However, to my question why the prepaid amount increased for 22 dollars more, the representative did not provide any answer. I was also not offered any courtesy lift to my hotel. Even though it was only a mile away from AVIS. I was under the impression such courtesy is an industry standard for major car rental companies provided in big metro areas. Later on I was contacted by two AVIS representatives. None returned my responses and requests. According to my rental car experience with AVIS, this organization's operations do not work properly, have many gaps, and deficiencies in customer care. Representatives do not care about customer's needs, provided a lot of misdirections and controversial information. read more

I don't know what I was thinking renting from this place. I should have checked the reviews first. I also don't know what else I can add that hasn't been said, since the same terrible reviews with the same issues date back over 10 years at this location. But if I can save one person from the same experience I had, here goes... DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE! Unless you want to wait several hours past your pickup time for a vehicle to get dropped off (they typically have ZERO vehicles in stock at any given moment on the weekends) so you can receive whatever random vehicle was just returned. Yes, this does mean if you ordered an SUV you might get a Mustang, or if you ordered a compact you might get a minivan. Alternatively, of course, you could decline to take the vehicle and let the next person in line have it (it's first come, first served; your name goes on a list when you arrive--your appointment time doesn't matter), then you get to play "vehicle roulette" and hope someone happens to return a car you want. Good luck! You'll know you're at the right place when you see a huge crowd of people standing around and sitting on the sidewalk with nasty looks on their faces and bad body language. Those are just the unsuspecting new recruits of the Avis Army--they take new conscripts daily. Don't say you weren't warned! read more

I rented a car in Washington DC Avis with 70,000 miles that looked about 40 years old and was damaged all over the exterior of the car. Warning lights kept popping up for many different issues and the car was making erratic and weird noises. All while driving in the middle of no where. Felt like the car was going to stall constantly. I was up-sold to the "Manager's Special BMW X3" at PHL airport. The BMW X3 was an old model (probably 5-10 years old) with over 50k miles, moderate body damage, and it smelled heavily of cigarette smoke. I was able to swap the car for a Mercedes SUV (after a 45 minute wait--which contributed to the 2nd half of this story), but that X3 should not even be in the Avis inventory. On our drive into Washington D.C., we called ahead around 6 pm to the Avis location at 1908 L St. NW to let them know we would be arriving at 7:01 pm due to traffic--this location is scheduled to close at 7. The employee on the phone reiterated twice that she would be leaving at 7 even when we asked if we could just leave the car there. We arrived at 7:01 pm (as expected) and the location was completely closed with no employees to be found. I was forced to park the car overnight in downtown Washington D.C. at a personal cost of $65. I have had a pleasant experience with Avis in the past, but I will not be using Avis again after this incident. read more

While it's not the best customer service, this location is typically bombarded with disgruntled customers. There have been times where they don't have the car you asked for or (once) my vehicle (a 15-passenger van) was delayed a few hours. However, if you are nice, they are typically nice right back to you. You get what you give. As for everything else, this location is pretty convenient and their hours are definitely better than other DC rental car companies and locations. The prices are better than the airports or Union Station but be sure to book early since they are typically sold out on the weekend. This is typically my go-to place for rentals longer than a day or two. read more

will NEVER rent a car from this place again. the car itself was great but the customer service here is severely lacking . i really miss the enterprise branch in g-town , they were awesome. they are down the street from me and i typically use hertz but they were sadly not open that day i needed my vehicle. so anywho thats how i got here. firstly, i was told that they do pick up and drop offs. they DON'T. other avis locations do but this one is an exception secondly, i requested a normal/boring-a$$ car. to me, that means no trucks, minivan or suv's. i can drive those behemoths and i have no wish to do in a rental. despite making that request, they told me that there was no way to hold that type of car ahead of time. very frustrating to talk to the woman on the phone. btw, the car i ended up with was good , a fusion. thirdly, the drop off was interesting. i got there and there was no one in the office. there was a sign at the door that said be back in 20 minutes. i tried to call but it just went to the corporate office. another customer shows up as well. while i am looking out for the avis person, whose name is tom, he shows up behind me and starts talking to the other customer. i interject to say i want to return the car and he asks if the gas is full and i said yes. he said that i would be all set. then i ask for a receipt he said i would have to wait and then proceeds to help the other customer. at this point, i have been here for almost an hour. when tom is done, i ask him about where he was and he says cleaning or helping other customers. i then asked him for a drop off and he says that they dont do that and he is the only one there. i mention how long i have been waiting so then he goes to the car to check. he then says the car is not full of gas, which is pretty ridiculous because i filled it up the day before and its a hybrid so its low on gas but also the gas gauge is at the top mark, indicating its full. after a bit of back and forth, i insist we go look at the car and he declines and says not to worry about it and i won't be charged. frankly,this interaction in and of itself was pretty ridiculous. charge me for what? a full tank of gas? anyways, i would recommend staying away from this location. i have used avis at other sites and they are ok but this site should be shut down if they can't hire more employees, who should man their office and know how to read a fuel gauge. read more
