I rented originally from the Dulles airport, with a brand new Hyundai Kona with 500 miles on it. I drove the to the Westin in DC for an overnight stay. The next morning, I went into the garage and the car was completely dead. I had not left the lights on and sometimes this happens with new cars that have been sitting for too long. I thought I was in luck when I realized this Hertz location was located in the Westin. The staff came into the garage and tried to start the car -- completely dead. The following is a recap of 17 different issues that transpired over the next 15 hours: Issue 1: They had to uncover the lock to try the physical key and open the door -- they didn't use a proper screwdriver and used the physical key instead to pry off the cap, keying the door in the process! Issue 2: They thought the battery was dead, but didn't have a battery jumper onsite, so said I would have to call Roadside Assistance. Issue 3: I had to leave for several meetings and I asked if I could swap the car with another one that they had on site. They said they could not accept a Hyundai or Kia because they get broken in all the time. Instead, I had to call Roadside Assistance. Issue 4: I called Roadside Assistance and after a 15 minute hold, they said they could send someone onsite, but it could take up to 1.5 hours. I had to leave for my meeting, so I asked if the roadside visit could be scheduled for 4 pm when I was back onsite. They said that would not be possible and I would have to call back. Issue 5: I ended up having to take 3 Ubers throughout the day since I didn't have a working rental car -- $103.44 later. Issue 6: That evening I called Roadside Assistance and after a 20 minute hold, they said they could send someone with a battery starter. Issue 7: Roadside Assistance texted that it would be upwards of 90 minutes to come onsite. Issue 8: Roadside Assistance arrived and tried multiple times to jumpstart the car with a battery starter. Car would not start after multiple attempts. Issue 9: I had to call Roadside Assistance again. After a 20 minute hold, the system transferred me to a live person and I was disconnected. Issue 10: I had to call Roadside Assistance again. After a 20 minute hold, they scheduled a 2nd tow truck to come. I told them that the garage clearance was 6'5". I asked if I could head to Reagan Airport to get a replacement car first, or if I had to wait for the tow. Roadside Assistance said they did not know -- it depends on the staff at Reagan. Issue 11: I received a text from the tow company that it would take 2 hours. Issue 12: I realized that 2 hours would put me past the 11 pm closure at Hertz Reagan Airport, so I wouldn't have the car for my next morning's meetings. I called Hertz Reagan Airport directly to see if I could pick up a car before the tow arrived. No one picked up. Issue 13: I called Roadside Assistance again and after a 20 minute hold, I asked them if I could pick up a car before the tow arrived. They did not know and tried calling Hertz Reagan Airport directly -- no one picked up. They said to just go and take my chances. Issue 14: I had to take an Uber to Hertz Reagan since my rental car didn't work: $45.37. Issue 15: Successful rental car pickup at Hertz Reagan and arrived back at the Westin hotel, *before* the 2nd tow truck arrived. Issue 16: 2nd tow truck arrived, taller than 6'5" in height. They could not enter, but would try a battery jumper instead. Issue 17: Despite me telling Roadside Assistance exactly where the car was located in the garage (P2, Yellow Section, near the Hotel elevator), and telling the tow company the same information, I spent 15 minutes wandering the garage trying to find the tow truck driver with the battery jumper. Final Resolution: Driver was able to jump start the car and I drove it to the surface, where he towed it away. Total resolution time - 9 am discovery; 6 pm re-engaging Roadside Assistance, 12 am successful tow. Most of this could have been avoided if this Westin Hertz location looked out for the customer and swapped cars to begin with. read more

I returned the car by the 5 PM deadline and parked it where instructed, but I could not find the key box. I entered the parking lot on Friday, August 23, at 4:53 PM and tried several times to reach Hertz Rent-a-Car by phone, but my calls were not answered. That day, this place was open until 5 PM. There was no contact from Hertz over the following day, the weekend, or until the Tuesday I stayed, and then I received an email on August 28 stating that the car had not been returned. I was subsequently billed for the rental period. I have sent multiple emails to Hertz Rent-a-Car regarding this issue, but no one has offered assistance or shown any willingness to resolve it. If you check the timestamp of my entry from the photos, you will see I did return the car. If I inadvertently left the key inside the car and could not find the key box, I am willing to pay for an additional day's rental. However, I received no notification of an unreturned car the following day, and my attempts to reach you on Friday and Saturday were unsuccessful. The system of notifying me after five days and charging me is both unfair and unreasonable. read more

I would not recommend this company for business rentals. My flight was delayed and they gave away my fully paid reservation. The agent I spoke with had no empathy and offered no help. Just stated that they cancel your reservation if you're more than 1 hour late. Our company does over 3000 rental cars a year for business travel. This company is too much of a liability to rent from due to their policy and lack of helpfulness. I've asked my travel dept to permanently remove all Hertz locations from our concur booking app. Unfortunately their policies are not conducive to business travelers. read more

This is follow up from Hertz after waiting 6 hours to pick up my vehicle one December 23, 2021 and was charged 400$ when I returned the car supposedly for a cleaning fee when the car was given to me dirty: Dear Amber Westbrook, Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We apologize for the delay in our response. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this has caused you. I am sorry for any misunderstanding regarding the cleaning fee charge for the rental. As stated in the terms and conditions, if the vehicle requires more than Hertz's standard cleaning on its return, Hertz may charge the customer for the actual cost incurred to have the vehicle cleaned. Customers should return the vehicle in the same condition as when they rented it. I understand that you are concerned about the charge. The charges for this rental have been reviewed and are correct. They are terrible in every way...let me list them... 1.The cars lack routine maintenance. You can be given a car with alignment issues and they are ok risking an accident and putting you in danger. 2. All 3 times, they are never have cars even when you book though Hotwire. It doesn't matter if you did a week in advance. 3. Empathy..there is none. Not I'm sorry I messed up your travel plans, or here is future discount or even credit. These people can not even look you in the eyes and offer any remorse for bad management or organization. Maybe it's not Hertz but this location is the most horrible experience. Go to the airport. Really wishing i i could give them less than a star awful service. Had about 10 people waiting behind me while one of the lady's was on the phone with corporate. She was talking to corporate on the phone for about 30 minutes and still the man behind the phone was being nothing but useless and unhelpful. One of the ladies that walked in came here around 12 PM has been waiting here since 4:51 PM and still she didn't have a car, this is very unprofessional and I'm very disappointing. Hertz will not be used again in the future and I will not rent cars from this awful and unprofessional company. Whatever you do I suggest staying away from this god-awful company, they can't even put someone at the front desk what makes you think you can rent a car from them. Hertz new Toll processing fees are a scam. They essentially bill you post rental and mark up the fees very aggressively. I was charged $104 for going through 2 tolls over 5 days. Tolls fees were $ 8 the rest is pure mark up. They "partner" with a 3rd party payment company called Hertzprocessing so you can't address directly with Hertz. Highly deceptive and shameful policy. read more

Save yourself a horrible experience and don't rent here. The front desk staff is horrible. She never acknowledged me Gold Member status or my reservation and didn't want to give me the car because I was late for my reservation. Then she said she had strep throat (and I thought why is she at work giving it to the customers). Then she told me she would enter the gas as 1/4 full even though it was between 1/2 and 1/4. When I got the bill I was charged for 3/8 of a tank of gas. When I called her the next day to straighten it out she said it was loud in the lobby and she couldn't hear me. She said she'd call me back and never did. Rather than have to deal with her unpleasantness again I ate the $20 extra in gas I paid because of her. read more

I'm really disappointed and now stranded in DC. I was able to BOOK a reservation several months ago at this location. Literally have a confirmation number, got reminder emails, Everything. Get there and the location is closed. I understand it's the fourth but I was able to BOOK A RESERVATION. Now any other locations are closed or completely sold out and I'm actually stranded in DC with no way to get to a family reunion without jumping through countless hoops. I'm just really upset and calling customer service did absolutely nothing - they can't do anything, they're closed, they're sold out. Werzt Car Rental. Let me tell ya about my Easter. I booked a Hertz rental car online weeks in advance and planned to drive to my relatives' home in Virginia for some ham and Jesus. Okay mostly just ham. The website advises I call a phone number 15 minutes before arriving at the pickup location. No problem. I open my confirmation email and press the hyperlink phone number on my smartphone. Ring ring. Ring ring. RING EFFING RING. Eventually I am auto-forwarded to a general line. After zer0'ing my way through the robot message service I get a real person. "Um, hai...I'm supposed to call you before I get my car....?" The nice (useless) woman on the phone can't locate my reservation. Can't find my name. Can't even find the PICKUP location. She asks if I was sure I rented from Hertz. "Ma'am, I don't keep rental car numbers in my phone to chit chat and trade dick pix. I pressed the number in my confirmation email from your company." I am put on hold for a hot minute...I'm getting heated and the ham is getting cold. The nice woman returned and was somewhat timid this time. I knew a shit show was about to ensue. Apparently the office I reserved the car for was closed on Easter yet the website allowed me to rent the car. So when I called for the pick up nobody was there. Now being almost 30 minutes behind schedule I was told to take a cab (which you better believe they paid for) to another location to get a car. I arrive at Union Station to find a long line of idiots being helped by one friendly gentleman who told me that the same thing happened to him at Thanksgiving. Well I'm glad they screw their employees just as much as their customers. When all was said and done I was over an hour late to my destination and hypertensive. Ya gonna pay for my stroke rehab too Hertz? When I dropped off the car I told the gentleman behind the counter what happened to which he gave me a nice discount. I also told him I filled the tank up before parking the car (hell to the no). Screwin' is a two way street Hertz. P.S. - When writing this review I noticed this location is no longer on the Hertz website. It looks like they've moved over to the nearby Renaissance Hotel where they are probably screwing new customers. Fantastic experience, Alexis is probably the best hertz associate I've ever had the pleasure of working with. The location itself is a little hard to find initially but was well worth it. The associate went above and beyond to get me a deal better than any I've gotten at any other hertz. Only side note is this location doesn't carry many large vehicles because of the restrictions in the parking garage. Besides that I'd highly suggest using this location if you want a good deal on your rental. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!! I made and prepaid my reservation weeks ahead. My gut told me to check online on the pick-up day just to be sure it was confirmed. When I logged into my account and tried to add insurance to the reservation, I received an error stating that the location is PERMANENTLY CLOSED! I tried calling the location just to be sure and it automatically hung up on me when I selected to speak to someone at the location. I called their nationwide number and the operator showed the reservation as paid for but did not know that the location was permanently closed. I am waiting for the refund to come through. How do you operate a major company in this manner? I received no phone call or email indicating that the location would be permanently closed. They should have at least canceled all of the outstanding reservations so that people could adjust their travel plans. I will NEVER ever use Hertz again and I DO NOT recommend them. This Hertz location is a nightmare. When arrived, I had to wait twenty minutes for someone to meet me at front desk. And upon my car rental return, I was instructed to leave the car in the parking lot and place the key inside, and not in a drop box. I rented around Christmas and I needed a few weeks to think about it. I was notified 23 minutes before my pick up that they needed to push my reserved slot back three hours. I was upset because wtf I gotta get on the road. When I got there guess what still no car. Instead of me seeing my car I see a young woman sweating ! Making constant calling around. I heard her say Woodbridge and I knew I may not receive a vehicle. Again I was very upset but I see this woman hasn't sat down she's constantly placing the be right back right and clock constantly other customers paying she just texted them I'm in route with your car. I've worked customer service and it's hard but I seen every single effort that young lady made to help get people going down to taking her items out her vehicle and giving it to a very upset customer that basically was trying to convince other customers to fight with her. It's sad we live in an age of no patience no understanding no empathy. And to top if off EVERYONE she gave a car too got a huge discount and was very appreciative. It was a terrible experience until I saw with my own eyes her dedication to her customers ! What would have been another bad review is now a life customer I will only use this location when I am in town! And I am extremely glad hertz has someone running things that care more about the service then the money. Remember that song Hotel California? Hotel Hertz is worst. I rented my car in the morning and returned it at night. But, Hertz never closed the account and kept charging. Every night at 1:02 am, their software bills me another $100 charge for not returning the car. I've been calling repeatedly. They kept acknowledging the car was returned and the local staff promises to close the account, but they never do. My $73 charge for a one day rental has now grown to almost $800. If I try to stop the charges with my credit card company, I would need to dispute every charge, but their software never sleeps, generating a new one every 24 hours, at 1:02 am. I can't stop the erroneous billing through National Hertz customer service, because they are trained to recite lines, not solve problems. They don't allow customers to connect with managers who can solve problems. So they keep billing and billing. Tonight, my charges will grow to $900. My stress level will likely cause a stroke. Worst yet, there isn't anything that I can do to stop this. I'm called them 25+ times, .. they put me on a hold each time. Hotel Hertz is much like Hotel California: You can leave any time you like, but you can never check out. read more

I probably should give it a 1 star but Jennifer at the desk was not at fault and was understanding. First, we had a rental booked for 8 AM for just one day. When we arrived we were informed that there were no cars available and we weren't the only people waiting. Seems someone from a different location forgot to bring the reserved cars over to the Renaissance Hotel the night before. At 9:30 AM our car arrived. Sadly, not the class we pre-ordered. It was a Dodge Dart. Didn't know these pieces of tin and plastic were still being manufactured. Think sardine can with above average height people trying to cram in. Not good. To add to that insult the car had less than a quarter tank of gas. Try finding a gas station in central DC. Right. Jennifer couldn't help with the gas so we filled it up on our dime but did not fill up upon return later that day. What warrants the 3 stars was Jennifer got her boss to approve cutting the daily rate in half. That helped. Most of my experiences with Hertz have been good. So once or twice in 30 years I can live with. read more

The absolute worst car rental office I have ever been to. If they happen to have a car (that you had reserved for a month) they can't manage to add the insurance that you requested. Then (if you can get a car) if you ask them to add liability insurance, they tell you they can't. Two hours later, they might remember how. Very nice the whole time, but willfully ignorant. Three people behind me were picking up cars, they had none available (despite having reservations). Awful, awful place. Go anywhere but here if you actually want to get a car. We just had the worst customer service experience of our lives. We are professionals and we travel frequently. The desk was empty but had a sign to call for service. We called and we could barely hear the person that answered and the line disconnected. A woman got off a nearby elevator and we asked was that her on the phone. She rudely replied, "Yes. I TOLD you I was in the elevator." She refused to provide us parts of the contract before we signed and said it was THE contract, regardless of whether we signed. When we told her we prefer to read the things we sign she laughed and asked if it was our first time renting a car. We explained that we were looking to verify what the coverages were for the additional insurances we requested. She gave us the keys but didn't tell us which space the car was in, leaving us to wander around the garage. Then she didn't validate our parking ticket and we had to fight with the parking attendant to avoid paying for parking when we had just picked up the car. read more
