They don't answer the phone. I tried to notify them that we wouldn't pick our vehicle up on time and that we would be delayed. The website says the location may be closed, but the hours on the website says it is open. No answer to the phone. No way to contact them. I called the main Avis # and they were no help. We missed our reservation at the Avis down the street by 18 minutes. A hotel employee directed us to this rental place instead. We were blown away by the customer service we received. It was our fault that we missed the reservation, so we were open to whatever car was available. We were given several options at no additional cost. Even though we changed our minds many times, the people who helped us were gracious and patient. We decided on a Tesla Model 3, and the person who pulled around the car gave us some pointers on how to use it and where to charge. We cannot thank them enough and wish we got their names! read more

This location is always slow. And they don't do Avis Preferred - so you have to wait in line. Then it takes 20 minutes for the garage attendants to get your car out. This location always tries to stick you with electric cars despite your reservation. And if you're a half an hour late to pick up your reservation, they'll give your car away. On 12/23/25 at 7am they had 38 reservations and only 10 cars in the garage. Horrible garage. I once scraped the entire side of a truck because it was too wide to fit in their returns entrance. No Avis locations EVER pick up their phones. F*ing miserable. Ruined multiple people's Christmas holidays. read more

Do NOT rent here. I have been a loyal customer always renting here multiple times. I always prepay for my order. This was reserved a month ago. They didn't have the vehicle that I needed or requested. I am sorry but it wasn't exactly a surprise that this car was gonna be needed today. RUN!!!! Do not rent here they offered a faster service if I completed the reservation online and all I needed was my drivers license and the card I used to pay. But when I went up to the front desk the lady was very rude and asking for verification for a promo code I used "online" which I didn't have at the moment since I was just coming off the flight. So she brought her manager out which I didn't get her name but I believe she was Chinese and she kept asking for proof that i got the promo code and I was showing her a screenshot from my work showing the promo code and my teams chat and she was saying not enough proof. That would be fine except that these EVs are NOT CHARGED - so this place violates the baseline expectation for a rental car service: that you can rent a car that gets you where you meed to go. Waited over an hour in line to get a car, even with a reservation. Once we got to the front to speak to the person behind the desk, we waited an extra 20 mins. Additionally, we waited another 10 mins for them to give us the car. It seems the issues are occurring in the back with the people getting the cars because the person doing our transaction spent most of his time waiting on a guy to respond on a walkie talkie. We also rented a corolla and ended up wirh a Jeep. Probably the last time we do Avis. Life is too short. read more

Huge upside of this location is the variety of less common rental cars: Lexus, Tesla, Acura, Challengers, Convertible Mustangs, Camaros and others in stock. Huge downside of this location, despite plenty of availability of unbooked cars, the staff refused any upgrade for Avis Preferred Plus. Not talking about speciality cars, but even going from a full size sedan to small SUV they asked money for. Unfortunately that's just unacceptable and violates the basic principles and reasons why people may stay loyal to Avis. The front desk here tries to upsell people like crazy and that's the general model of this location. Unforgivably did end up paying for an upgrade to a nice Lexus ES350 at a rate that I did manage to negotiate. This is very much a street market haggle type of location. They also took 30minutes to have to call and authorize my credit card over the phone and didn't tell me why, nothing was wrong with my card. Not very communicative with customers waiting. Very convenient location for people who need to pick up a rental near downtown SF / Nob Hill area. We rented a Tesla and I wish they had given us a few more tips and instructions, like how to charge (a bit complicated if you're not familiar with how to use the charger and the app!) and where the hazard lights button is. Before we picked up, I called the Avis customer service and ask if we pick up early would we have to return early, and they said no - picking up early depends on if the car is ready but our reservation time (drop off time) remains. But when we got there, front desk person told us not only the 24-hour clock starts early, it starts from the time we arrive at the front desk, NOT when we pick up the car. Not a big deal but we lost about an hour on a day where our schedule was tight. But shoutout to the garage workers! They were fast and delight. Got us out of the (super tight space) garage quickly while juggling many other customers; and the return was easy too. read more

RENTER-BEWARE!!! I recently had a terrible experience with Avis. Apparently, the company thinks it's okay to send someone on vacation with an electric vehicle without telling them. I assumed it was a hybrid because that's what I reserved. I can't imagine a vacationer wants to spend hours and hours charging the vehicle they're driving. Roadside assistance was impossible to get a hold of. I was also told it was $80 to have them charge it but was charged double that with no explanation. Had a reservation for a minivan because I was in town to help my daughter move. Got there and no mini vans available so they offered me an SUV because it had "the same number of seats." I said I didn't need seats, I needed cargo space. But they had no options for me. I returned the vehicle full of gas (more than when I took it out) and then noticed on my credit card they charged me $20 for gas. They tell you to leave all your paperwork with the vehicle but make sure when renting from this location that you get a final bill and receipt before you leave. Took me 30 minutes with customer service to get them to agree to a refund. Scammers at this location. I expect that crap from Budget but Avis should do better. read more

I came in about a week after car rental when I realized I had left my really valuable sunglasses in the glove compartment. He helped me go through the lost and found. When I found nothing, he traced the car down, saw it was being returned by someone else later that day, and jotted my number down. He said he would take a look as soon as the car was returned. Lo and behold he called me for two days straight to let me know that he traced down the sunglasses. Could not be more grateful, and what a wonderful employee / human to care so much when he had very little incentive to put in the extra mile! read more

Rented a sedan and they tried to give me a pick up truck which is not at all helpful for how I need to use the vehicle. While the staff was polite, I'm shocked that they did not even acknowledge the issue or explain to me why they were giving me a completely different class of vehicle and I only found out when I went to the garage to pick it up. Update - a week after my bad review and after escalating my issues to Avis customer service, a fraudulent charge randomly appears on my credit card in relation to a toll fee when I never used a toll road. After investigating the charge, it was for a toll road usage 2 hours before I even had the vehicle. I had to report this to multiple people and still waiting for it to be corrected. Be super cautious about renting here as it's very easy to miss these extra charges long paste the rental being over and near impossible to get resolved with their customer service and has to result to doing a charge back with my credit card company. read more

If it weren't for the fact that this is the closest location to me and I get an Avis discount, I would not come here. Every time I have rented a car here, the staff is absolutely awful (I've dealt with three women and one blonde guy). The people working at the desk hate their jobs and are condescending , rude, and incredibly snarky to customers. Heaven forbid you have any basic questions, because they just want to collect their paycheck and not talk to you. I did not have the best experience with Avis, however based off the interactions with staff I do think I would do business again with Avis. Craig saved you. First, I was looking at cars on my phone and signed up for email alerts to get a 35% discount. Several days later I get a reminder email that it's the last day to get my discount, so I click the link in my email and it takes me to the car I was looking at. I decided to price check on my computer and the car was $45 more expensive on my phone. I don't appreciate the price gouging. Second, I made my reservation 9 days in advance and when I show up for my prepaid reservation they said I'm waitlisted as a car was not available. The woman who was helping me was kind, but the man next to her said "it's a holiday weekend and kind of shrugged." I very much so understand it's a holiday weekend. That's why I booked the car 9 days in advance. I was going to have to wait several hours but Craig ended up getting me a car in 40 minutes, which is still 40 minutes longer than I should have had to wait. Unfortunately all he could do for the lost time of my reservation was give me a free tank of gas and a small discount, which I appreciate. Avis also gave me a surprise charge when I returned my car. The emailed receipt I got was $40 more than what I prepaid, however I wasn't aware there would be additional charges. Someone was able to get the extra charges down to $18 but I was under the impression I had unlimited miles and a free tank of gas, so I'm not sure where the extra charge is coming from. Overall, my biggest piece of advice is don't over book. If someone receives multiple notifications that their rental is confirmed and ready to go, it should be ready for the person at the time of reservation, period. I would have had to pay a non-refundable $50 cancellation fee if I chose to unreserve after prepaying, yet they don't even have a car ready for me. read more

AvIt is the worst. We rented a car in Cancun, got about halfway to our destination, 60 km or so, and got a low tire pressure warning. Since it was a slow leak, we put air in the tire until we had time to deal with it. Avis said they would only be willing to put the donut mini tire on, and we had to drive back to Cancun with that. Nope. Nope. Nope, and for good measure, one more nope. I've rented cars in a ton of places and this was about as crappy as it gets. We arrived about 20 minutes before our reservation and they didn't have a car ready which is no sweat, but they made a point to make me wait until we hit 11 a.m. on the dot which I found petty. They didn't ask if I was Avis Preferred (I am), and proceeded to be pretty rude from there on. When 11 a.m. rolled around they still didn't have my car ready, so they took their time getting me a truck. I had called about a car seat, mentioned a car seat twice, and when we got the truck... no car seat. They got us one that was wrong, until I walked back and told them again what I needed. Then they just lob a shitty car seat in, unsecured as the car idled on a busy SF street with a sort of "good luck" attitude. No manual or guide sheet, nothing. Fortunately one gentleman there who I didn't catch his name understood customer service and assisted us. This car seat was painfully cheap, and my easy going daughter was miserable because there wasn't even head support so she couldn't nap and swayed side to side in it. When I returned the car, I was in a bigger than average truck and didn't want to risk squeezing it into the tiny entry way and waited on them until I finally lost it and took my chances. This same gentleman eventually came out to assist but it was too late. This shouldn't be a one-man show in a busy place like SF, and I'd go way out of my way to rent anywhere but here. Never had a rental car experience that was such a pain in the butt as this one. OH, last thing - I went to rent a midsize car from their site directly and it was about $260 for two and a half days. Ended up getting everything from a discount site and it was $100. So don't rent from them directly if you do go down this frustrating route. read more

I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of the outstanding customer service your colleagues have given me recently. I retuned the black 2019 Ford Edge rental on Friday, April 2, 2021 and mistakenly left my apartment parking pass in it. I did not realize my mistake until Saturday night. So I came in during the 7am hour on Sunday the 4th to see if it had been turned in to "lost and found". Your staff checked amongst themselves but couldn't locate it. The vehicle had also been rented out again since I returned it. The gentleman that was filling in as the supervisor gave me your contact information because I expressed the desire to be able to speak directly to people at your location when I call Avis. So I called in on Monday and Pat took the call. I gave her a description of my misplaced tag and she said they would search the vehicle thoroughly when it was retuned on Tuesday April 6th. I didn't hear back by the 4pm hour today so I decided to drop back in. I went strait up the ramp where James came out to meet me and asked how he could assist me. I explained my situation and he assured me he was well aware of my dilemma. He took me over to the "lost & found" area where he diligently looked through everything in that area section by section. I showed him a picture of the tag and he quickly located it sticking down in the side of the bin! It must have gotten tangled in with other items when they looked for it sometime earlier. James looked for it with such diligence, that you would have thought the tag was his own property. I feel that your team as a whole deserve commendation for their group effort to help me over the course of three days. I plan to apply for a job at Avis to write a 2 page flier for Boomers who never drove an EC, namely a Tesla, to give a "quick and dirty" basic operating advice instead of my representative being told by the apparent driver advice guy "No," in response to her asking if he wanted to show me basic operation of the Tesla. I'm kind of in a hurry and how hard can it be, uh it's rainy weather and how do I do the wipers in case, defroster, etc., etc. Figure it all out under duress driving to San Ramon but lest I digress, I was seriously impaired when I went to charge it up and found out I had to have an adapter, after a wonderful party with amazing people that I didn't want to have to bother with my further misadventures not being able to even turn on the radio, much less heater, defroster, etc. My Mercedes was down with a rim and tire problem of monumental proportions and I needed alternative transportation at the last minute. and there were only EC;s left. Still, I could imagine EC's in the hands of the underadvised being kind of a menace on the local highways . Counter service was good. Other support was bad. Avis should have better instructions for non-EV experienced renters and the tires on the car were extremely, dangerously underinflated after the counter girl did some inflation before i took the car. Took 20 minutes to get to the desk to be told that we need to wait for cars to get to the rental car from the airport. There are 11 people on the list and some people are waiting for over an hour waiting for their reserved car. People are arguing with the manager and lots of upset people. They said even though I reserved at 9, I have to wait behind the people who came in before me and have reservations at 10, which doesn't make sense. I'm not in the habit of writing scathing reviews, but I'd make it zero stars if I could. See what you think of this triple rip-off: Rip-off #1 Months in advance, I specifically hired a Toyota Prius hybrid to keep fuel charges at a minimum. After arriving 15 minutes ahead of my appointed rental time, I waited almost an hour to be served, only to be told (rudely) that no Prius (or other hybrid car) was available. Therefore, I was ripped off by having to pay for AT LEAST ONE TANK more fuel than if I had been given the hybrid car I hired. Rip-off #2 The day I returned the car, I filled it up just before leaving Vacaville (about 60 miles away). When I reached San Francisco, I topped it up again. I then drove LESS THAN ONE MILE to the return location on Post Street. So I was shocked to find a $20.63 "refueling charge" on my final bill. It took an hour on the phone, but I was finally refunded. Rip-off #3 One month to the day after returning the car, a $39.95 E-toll fee appeared on my credit card. I had incurred ONE toll, $7.00 for the Bay Bridge when I returned the car to SF. I called the Avis Post Street office and was on hold for over 40 minutes, only to be finally told repeatedly, "I can't help you." I insisted on talking to a manager and was assured that one would call me back. 24 hours later, no call (no surprise), so I called again. This time I pushed enough buttons to eventually reach the e-toll option. The line was answered quickly. I found out that I had been charged for two tolls, a £7.00 toll at 10:00 (reading the license plate) and a $27.00 toll at 10:03 (reading the tag supplied by Avis). Is it really possible to cross the Bay Bridge twice in three minutes in the same direction? I think not. The inexplicable $27.00 second charge was quickly refunded, but wouldn't have been if I hadn't taken the time to chase it. In addition, I was charged a $5.95 per-toll usage fee that is, apparently, part of the Avis rental agreement. So, using Avis, whenever you incur a $7.00 toll it actually costs you $12.95. My fault for not reading the fine print, but there ought to be a law. Despite the fact that it's the most convenient car rental location for me when in SF, I won't be using Avis again. read more

I'm a "Preferred Member" which means they are supposed to hold a car for me. At every other location they do that, but here apparently they cannot be bothered. I reserved a full-size vehicle and after holding us hostage for 20 minutes, the reservation agent finally convinced us to take a standard size vehicle with two doors so we could just leave the damn place. We confirmed that we would be charged less. This was a huge inconvenience because we had a drive around elderly relatives and a two-door wasn't going to cut it. So we had to borrow a relative's car to get them around. When I returned the car to Las Vegas, I discovered that they still charged me the amount quoted in my original reservation. When I called Avis to complain, the woman on the phone said I had actually reserved a standard size, 2 door, which is ridiculous because I would have never done that. And the reservation agent in San Francisco knew we reserved a full-size - he spent twenty minutes arguing with me trying to convince me to accept a standard size. Because the Avis confirmation emails only link to the website, they are useless to confirm what was actually reserved. I'm pretty sure the reservation agent changed my reservation in order to make it look like he did indeed give me what I reserved while still charging me the amount quoted for a full-size. Sigh. Avis was good but for having evil locations like this and for trying to convince me that I was crazy and reserved the wrong car, I'm going to have to switch rental car companies. UPDATE: Avis just sent me a $25 coupon as some sort of peace offering. Pretty condescending given their rental rates. Anyway, the coupon mailing alerted me to the fact that they are now part of Budget Rent-A-Car, which is also an evil company that has screwed me over in the past. The plot thickens. Thank you Avis for ruining my day! When they say "We Try Harder" they should clarify, they seem to try harder to do their best to push you to your breaking point! I would give this place NEGATIVE 5 stars if I could. My original plan: After a relaxing breakfast after visiting a friend, my other friend and I were going to pick up our rental car, drive across the Golden Gate, visit Marin, Golden Gate Park and Presidio Park. Then we were going to take a leisurely drive down Hwy 1 to Santa Cruz, visit the Mystery Spot and check in to our surf camp. The reality: I arrived at 10:30 to pick up my car. When we got here the line was out the door. I stood in line for 3.5 hours (no that's not a misprint) before getting my "intermediate sized" car. (Apparently Ford Mustangs are intermediate sized cars) It was nearly an hour before the line progressed enough that I was no longer outside. After an hour it finally dawned on the manager (David) that it would be nice to explain to all of the cranky, frustrated people why we were staying in the slowest line EVER. Apparently, a 100 people were scheduled to pick up cars at 9:30 and they were behind (understatement of the year); per David they usually only rent 100 cars in a day. He said they had enough cars for all of us. He also said he'd talk to each one of us (first lie) and address our problems - David, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out our problem was not getting our cars quickly. Around hour 1.5 I call to see if I can join Avis Preferred over the phone and get into the extremely short line (2 people) at the location, I was told I could, but had to stay in the regular line so they could get my signature on file (boooo). Hour 2.5 David addresses us again telling us he'll start at the END (yes the end) of the line to address concerns - so the guy who just walked into Avis gets better service than those of us on our feet, in line for 2.5 hours+. When we object he tells us there is a procedure and if we just understood it he'd get to us (lie #2). When we tell him to get behind the counter and get people moving through the line we get the same "procedural" line of garbage. Hour 3 David gets to where the grumbling, vocal would-be renters are (myself included) in line and miraculously has to leave, but promises he'll be right back (lie #3); he tells us not to leave without talking to him! Is this guy for real? He disappears, when he finally comes back, he dodges behind the counter avoiding the angry renters only to say "oh we're out of candy" at that point I wanted to beat him with the candy dish - I'm tired, hungry and quickly crossing all of my activities for the day off my list. David finally gets to us and continues to shovel his patronizing bull, we, like the guy who just walked in 5 minutes ago, get $25 off coupons. Ridiculous! I finally get to the head of the line, my only request is that our car fit our 2 suitcases - technically it does, but try shoving a 24" wheelie in the back seat of a 2-door car! We skip Hwy 1 and haul ass down the freeway to Santa Cruz hoping we don't get pulled over in our red sports car. We get to the Mystery Spot after pushing our reservations back twice and finally ditch the car at Avis 2.5 hours late. Avis, I hate you. The only nice thing I have to say is your bathrooms are clean. If people are SCHEDULED to pick up and overwhelm you - plan ahead, don't try to wing it because you suck at it! read more

Bad experience. Car model was alright however the condition it was handed to me was appalling. While I can overlook a major dent on the fender (circled in red), I must say the rubber sealant that came off (circled in yellow) the windscreen was another level to tolerate. On the freeway, the rubber was flapping and hitting the passenger window. The noise it created was unbearable. I pulled over to put the sealant back in place; five minutes later it came off again. As this may not have been brought to Avis' attention earlier, I took the car back halfway through the rent and reported it. The person who attended to me was indifferent with the situation only putting the sealant back even though I told him it doesn't work. He replied "at some point this car will be gone if the condition worsens". This is not the first. I was assured in an email from J. Arellano/ L. Thornberg following the feedback of my previous bad experience that Avis will aim to "exceed my expectation" on my next booking. Clearly they haven't. I have also provided suggestions to make amends but have yet to hear a response from either of them for more than a month now. What more can I say or do? I hope this review helps others make a decision on Avis. Before Avis, I have had many good experiences with Alamo located nearby at Union Square (320 O'Farrell); unfortunately they're all booked up for the time that I needed the car. Update: J.
