I'm so surprised w/ all the bad reviews for this place. I had an absolutely incredible experience. Rented my economy size car through Priceline for nine days and the total came to under $175. Went to pick up my car a couple days later and the customer service representative was so welcoming and pleasant to me. I was a little nervous because I was a couple hours later than I had originally booked the car for but if it was a problem, the CSR made no sign of it. She informed me I would be getting a Prius..."ummm, but I rented an economy car, not a hybrid car", I commented concerned. "Yeah, I see that...the Prius is one of our economy size cars"...AWESOME!!! =) After signing (and reading) all the documents, she told me where to wait until my car came around but didn't have to wait too long because here it came...in my favorite color!! =) The guy asked if I had ever drivin one before and when I said no, he gave me a quick run down on how everything worked. Another guy came over and they both started making innocently funny jokes on how they wish they were going on vacation with me. So silly! Ended up having a bit of trouble figuring out how to get the trunk to actually lock but figured it out after messing around with it a bit. Car was clean and just what I needed for my trip...I would definitely rent from them again. And to top it off, returning it after my nine days was a cinch. Now I'm a bit of a skeptic sometimes, so I asked the representative to print out a copy of my total billing and zeroed balance. Which she quickly obliged to with a smile and an understanding comment. This was the worst experience we've ever had picking up a car. We had a reservation at 11 for pick up and the preferred service had a line ten people deep and the attendant was seeing about one person every twenty minutes. When we get to the front, we asked the lady if it was always like this and she nods slowly.. mutters something about summer, and get us out of there quickly. Note: We had all of our stuff ready to go, unlike the 4-5 people in front of us, so word to the wise: If you HAVE to come here, come when they open (arrive early) and have all your confirmation numbers, drivers licenses, etc ready to go. Don't be alarmed if they authorize your credit card $20 more than what the total price quoted to you, its for incidentals. It will get released after 2 days. I've noticed this place is getting hammered with a lot of bad reviews due to the customer service. I have to admit service is prompt and straight forward - you want a car you get a car. My SO reserved my car for me a couple days before. I am a preferred member. I have rented from Avis from multiple locations. Since this place is a bit small they do things differently here. As a preferred member, instead of going straight to your car you stand in a shorter line and they check you in. Afterwards, you wait outside and someone brings you your car. The attendant was very nice. You return the car, someone checks it out, writes on your receipt paper you got when you got your car, and then you head inside where you get checked out with a receipt of your total cost. A bit different but it worked out. This place closes at 6pm so beware when you are planning your trips. read more

I have gone to many Avis car rental venues around the USA - Boston, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Michigan, and more. My favorite is the SF venue on Post Street. I continually go here for the service and have had an exceptional experience renting on a weekly basis. I have received superior service from many of the employees including Colleen, Patty, Betty, Bonaveau, and more. They have treated me with respect and I feel very valued as a client of Avis. Yes - the line does get incredibly long sometimes during tourism season, but that's just normal with most car rental venues. If you make your reservation early, and come before the wave, you're good to go. If you come during the wave, that's your own loss. I see a lot of complaints but will defend this Avis with my personal experience of having rented 20+ times here. read more

Update - they also charged another $218 to my card 5 days after I returned and paid the reservation bill. No explanation of charges, or notification - just saw it on my credit card bill. My only guess is a cleaning fee, but I've never smoked anything in my life, let alone in a rental car. So unless my dog was sneaking cigarettes in the car, it's not legit. If you rent from here, be sure to have them sign off on condition of the car/it being smoke free when you return it - get it in writing! read more

Rented a Prius from this location for a little over two weeks at a decent price. Not a bad experience when compared to other car rental agencies. A little bit of an attempt at upselling, which I always expect and turned down. Car was a little dinged up but not too bad. With any rental, make sure you always take photos of the car when picking it up. When picking up the car I was probably in and out within 10 minutes. When I dropped it off, maybe 5 minutes. In a neighborhood with a lot of homeless. But otherwise everything was good. I mostly worry about surprise charges, and so far haven't been hit with one. read more

One star for being convenient to our hotel (Hilton at Union Square), one star for our vehicle being clean and exactly what we requested/needed. Can't give any more stars because the wait was excruciatingly long. Long lines just to get to the counter and then more of a wait for your vehicle. Other customers were waiting just as long and one was told that although they'd reserved a 7 passenger vehicle, they didn't actually have one, so basically, too bad, so sad. I also overheard another customer politely ask a counter representative how long they might have to wait for their vehicle and she snapped, "I don't have any control over that!" Yikes. We pre booked our car online, but upon arrival we're told there were none left, but they could get us a car that was apparently in the same group, but was in reality much smaller. We spoke to the manager, Jason, who was super helpful, and found us a car a few hours later, which he came to our hotel and picked us up with, giving it to us, despite it being one size larger than expected. He then also helped us a week later, during his holidays, to find us a car at another destination. read more

Local renter here, and I usually rent with Alamo a few blocks away. They, more often than not, have the better rates and the class of car I reserve. No bullshit either: pick up car, return car, fuel/mileage check, done. This time around, Avis had the better rate for a Compact, and since I hadn't rented with them in close to 8 years, I didn't really know what to expect. Had a reservation for Saturday morning. Showed up to find a mostly empty office with the exception of the agents--cool. Let them know I had a reservation, they pulled it up, swapped out the license on my profile for a newer one, and then told me they had a pickup truck available that could seat 5 people. "No thanks, I don't want to deal with the poor mileage on that. I'd like something smaller, closer to the original class of car I reserved." Agent looks and can't find anything and retreats to the back to call the people in the parking lot. "Will you take a small SUV? A Nissan Rogue?", he asked. "Sure." It got good mileage for what it was--no complaints there. Two other guys that arrived after me got stuck with the pickup truck. Returned the car on Sunday morning. The return lot was full, and no one dealing with returns was to be found. Took a photo of the odometer and fuel tank reading, left the keys in the car, and headed inside. The only agent there took my contract, I let him know the fuel tank was full, and he told me I'd receive a receipt via email--nice. But as I'm walking away, I get a push notification from my bank for a charge from Avis for another $19.52. Puzzled, I continue walking home and await the e-receipt. I received the e-receipt shortly after getting home, but I had fallen back asleep and hadn't seen it until 2 hours later. A $17.99 (+ tax) fuel surcharge had been added, one that I hadn't agreed to. I had filled the tank up the night before, and the agent hadn't actually checked the tank himself (I did tell him it was full though), so this was unexpected. I walked back over and told them this. "Oh, that charge is added when you drive under 75 miles." LOL. "I drove over 300 miles yesterday, there's no way that's right. Here's a photo of the odometer and fuel tank reading when I returned the car." How does a surcharge for a full tank regardless of mileage driven at all make sense? There are plenty of complaints that are easily found online about this from Avis locations around the world and it seems to be a pretty common scam that's played off by the under 75-mile drive excuse or a system error (as in my case). Anyways, they refunded it without much hassle outside of that. 3/5 stars (which I think is pretty generous), mainly for lacking the class of car I reserved and having to walk back to deal with getting the "fuel surcharge" removed. read more

OK - Full disclosure. Upon closer review of my receipt, I see that the $270 charge includes my $144 rental plus a "half-day" charge of $125. So, I appreciate that they (sort of) honored our agreement per my phone call. Avis receipts are nearly incomprehensible, but I don't think $125 is half of $144... However, I still cannot dismiss the heinous behavior of the AM desk clerk or the terrible attitude of most of their staff. (That includes you with the good hair. You know who you are.) Plus, I was charged an additional $13 for toll road fees, but I did not use Avis' FasTrak device. Knowing Avis would try to extort, I paid $5 cash and have a receipt for the Bay Bridge toll. Now, I must contact their 1-800 Tolls Department by phone and email ecare@htallc.com (?) to provide multiple forms of documentation: copy of receipt, credit card statement, additional personal info, etc. to get a refund... all for $13. This is also the location where they process the purchase of their rental vehicles. I was interested in one of their vehicles and set up a test drive. After agreeing to purchase the vehicle I notice the engine light was on. Avis gave me contradictory information on where to take it and then finally told me to return the vehicle. They were unable/unwilling to fix the vehicle or give me any information about what would happen to the vehicle that I wanted to purchase. This after I spend $80 on the VIN verification. A woman named Jennifer at Avis Sales has a gnat's ability to follow logic, and she was impossible to talk to. After spending 8 hrs on this new vehicle I am without a car and without any help from Avis. read more

If you can avoid this location, find another spot. They are not big on customer service, but rather cattle people in and out. Cars are not usually ready on-time and if you are setting a pickup time make it earlier rather than later. This area is pretty unsavory, so I wouldn't plan on walking to this location and it would be better to take an Uber. The employees were constantly trying to game people with the $10/gal bring it back with an empty tank thing, especially those that didn't speak fluent English. Not a fan. read more

TECHNICALLY THE GEARY STREET LOCATION....but it hardly matters. Evident ally, If you live on one of the busiest streets in the world (Sunset Blvd) and once a year a ditz on a cell phone taps your bumper at a light and you claim it in order to get your car fixed, AVIS will not rent you a car. EVEN IF it is not your fault. EVEN WHEN you conference in the DMV with Avis and the DMV says you're a good driver and the fender-benders are not your fault in any way. They couldn't care less that they left us stranded with no car on a busy weekend at the beginning of a well earned vacation. Never informed us of this bizarre "bad luck" policy prior to booking. It is the exact equivalent of Visa not allowing you to have credit because you got mugged last year. Robotic, bureaucratic morons at corporate headquarters were unwilling to use common sense and displayed nothing but lazy, , inhuman, adherence to "policy", regardless of the details of our particular cae. I filled up the tank and drove from the gas station to post and taylor. The meter was at the F, but he insisted it was 7/8 of a tank. Finally I went to the check out and has the CSR look at the tank, and sure enough she said it was full and they wouldn't charge me extra for filling up the gas tank. They also have no return checkin on the spot as you pull in like almost every other place so you have to wait in line again to get a receipt. Of course it doesn't help that this place seems to only attract foreign tourists who a) don't or barely speak English (I'm fine with that but it sure slows things down) and b) every freaking one of them wants a GPS and the counter person is the one who trains them on it vs. having someone else do that so they can move the line along faster. I put up with this place because it's close, but no more after today. The staff is consistently incompetent. This time it started off with the office staff charging me too much. I asked the lady I was working with to lower my rate. She said she couldn't now that she ran my credit card - that would be "phishing", that shows up on a report, and that makes the boss angry. Well, okay, I'll just talk to the boss and explain that I haven't been Internet scammed! "He's not here." Well, okay, I'll just sign a waiver! "We don't have waivers." Well, okay, I'll just cancel the order, and start over! "If we run it again, we have to charge today's rates." I'm a very positive person and don't enjoy spending time complaining, but this is the worst experience I've ever had with a rent-a-car agency. We booked ahead and are "Preferred Members". We arrived at 9:45am on a Monday morning and did not get our car until 12:00pm. The staff (including the Manager Anthony) were rude and inflexible, overall really terrible customer service. Expect to wait a very long time even though you made a reservation. Perhaps because of the location, most tourists go to this location but there is no such thing as speedy pickup. There is a separate line for preferred members but it doesn't seem consistent that they enforce this. You also have to wait in the same line(s) just to dropoff, even though the attendant in the garage already filled out the paperwork and took your key. It is ridiculous that a big city like San Francisco would not have any Avis locations in the city itself that has evening hours. They all close at 6pm. If you want to avoid additional charges as well as overnight parking in the city, you can drop it off at SFO and take Bart back into the city. read more

The customer service woman I spoke to via phone was an absolutely cold and nasty sounding woman. I was polite and friendly and she answered me like a witch. I rented a car this past weekend, after thinking I was receiving excellent customer service while booking my reservation over the phone...the reps at this location were no help and rude. I usually rent from Hertz but this time I decided to try Avis...since their rate was cheaper for the weekend. I decided to call the 1(800) # because usually when I book online it'll ask me my age (22 yrs & there's usually a fee) but it didn't and I thought that was weird because i didn't want to get any hidden fees so I figured a rep can help me answer all my questions. She was very nice and she did answer all my questions and made me think I was going to be a happy customer...but once I got to the location to pick up the car I WAS WRONG! The information that the nice girl provided me over the phone was the complete opposite and what the in-store rep told me! *SPECIFIC WORDS FROM THE REP ON THE PHONE* "Since you are 22 we DO NOT charge an underage fee" "Yes you are able to use a debit card to pay for the vehicle" Well turns out there is a fee (which was $27 instead of $15 that I've seen at most places) and also because of my age I was forced to use my credit card that I didn't want to use because I planned to have all the money on my debit card! The in-store rep was rude in general even before I was upset about this whole issue and I ended up paying way more than expected. I guess a one time courtesy to wave the fee has never crossed their mind. They asked me if I wanted to cancel my reservation (I'm practically dragging a duffle bag around and mind you already pissed off) I said "NO, so you guys can charge me for a late cancellation too?!" I just could not hold in the anger. All in all, I knew it was too good to be true and they most likely have their policies listed somewhere, but you would think their employees know what the hell they are talking about instead giving out false information to customers. I should've went with my gut and stuck with Hertz that had the cheaper under age fee (it's not that much, but hey I want to save as much money as I can!). This is the worst run Avis I've ever been to! I say this with respect and love for the front office agents, who are doing the absolute best they can as the paperwork, lack of cars, and increasing people waiting in line start mimicking a dark comedy depicting bureaucrats trapped in the 7th level of hell. As a regular Avis user who has their loyalty card, I am regularly ignored in my shorter line. This week, while trying to get my car, at 9am, apparently the man in the lot who is responsible for sending cars down upon request was ignoring the front office clerk's requests for certain cars, saying he was out of cars when he wasn't, refusing to repeat license details or information the clerks needed to fill out forms, and then, after 30 minutes, I finally got to a desk clerk, did all the same to her, she finally got a car out of him, and then I walked outside -- and the car was being washed and wasn't ready for another 30 minutes. Keep in mind I got out the absolutely fastest of service compared to anyone else in the office. I've had bad experiences at this Avis many times before, but this one really took the cake. My heart went out to the clerks saying "OH god, it can't be happening this early in the day," because you could tell that this was their every day. No exaggeration, I waited 2 hours to get my car. They told me that my vehicle was behind 25 other cars. I am Avis Preferred and only had to wait 10 minutes in line to pull up my reservation, so that wasn't my problem. However, I will say that the normal line was up to 30 minutes at time. The same buried car excuse and wait time was also given to at least two other people. The staff was friendly and apologetic about it, which gets two stars instead of one, but the wait time is unacceptable. I could have gone to SFO and back and still had an hour to spare. read more

I walked in to rent a car on a weekend in late October. I wanted to visit Muir Woods and in the middle of the conversation with the Avis representative I read on the website that Muir Woods was closed due to wildfires. I asked to cancel the rental and that was no problem so I walked out and never rented a car. A few days later when I checked my credit card statement, Avis had charged me for the full rental (I had given them my credit card before cancelling the rental). I called them up to get the problem sorted and they said that their records indicate that I had rented the car for the full day! They needed a week to look in to the issue. After 10 days and a phone call from me I received an email saying that my cost was refunded. If I hadn't checked by credit card balance and hadn't spent nearly an hour on the phone with their support, they would have taken my money. Living in Sweden this has cost me a lot in phone bills and also currency fluctuations means that I was refunded less money than what they withdrew. I can't speak to the quality of their cars but I can tell you that if something goes wrong, you will likely have to put in a great deal of work with their support. read more

Had a free certificate that was mailed to me due to a Budget class action suit of overcharging. I indicated a one way rental for the day with a delivery at the airport. It stated I could do so when I entered all the info in the reservation, which I did at home. When I got there, the lady behind the desk began to say it would be a $150 drop off charge and explained it was OK in the computer. She admitted she wash't sure why the computer said that and I explained it would be ok to return it here in downtown to avoid astronomical drop off charges. After that snafu, everything else was ok! Finally, a supervisor came over and explained it was a free rental even for one way. 20 minutes later, this woman (with a very heavy accent) stated she could not figure it out. The manager came back and clicked a couple of buttons (like Dorothy's ruby slippers) and POOF - we got the car for one way, except they ran out of cars thanks to my new Fairy Godfather. They finally offered an SUV and asked if they could charge an upgrade fee. ANYTHING TO GET OUTTA here I said, feeling as though I was stuck in the Twilight Zone or the beginning of a Hitchcock film with a bad ending for me. Thankfully, that wasn't the case! They finally "waved" the fee and I took the SUV to wine country. It was dirty and not fully cleaned. When I dropped off the SUV at SFO, they tried to charge me a $78 drop off fee. Extremely sketchy service. The car I rented was fine and clean. The review concerns the staff. I had returned the car early, on time, and with a full tank of gas. I chose to drop my ticket/invoice into the box instead of heading to desk because I was in a rush. Chose to get an email invoice instead. When i check my credit card statement later that day I saw a charge of $19.52. Called to the location and asked what the charge was for. Agent on the phone told me that its a charge for the gas. Told them that can't be true and that I had proof. The agent then begins to question me as to which gas station I went to and how much I paid..... Why would you need to ask when you could just look at the invoice??? The return person checked all the boxes that said car was not damaged, mileage, and how much gas is in the tank. I had read reviews on yelp and found similar situations happening to other renters. Do yourself a favor and take pictures of all your receipts or keep copies for proof. Very shady! read more
