If you're renting in San Francisco, I'd recommend this Enterprise location. It's a smaller branch, but don't let the size fool you. We visited over the recent federal holiday, so it was busy with customers returning vehicles, yet Vincent and his team kept everything moving smoothly and professionally. I originally wanted an SUV to make the drive home a little more comfortable after dealing with San Francisco's rough roads. Vincent took the time to walk me through the vehicle, completed a thorough inspection with me, and clearly explained everything before I left. Even as a loyal Enterprise customer, I appreciate that level of transparency, it gives you confidence that there won't be any surprises later. Shout out to Vincent and his team for turning a stressful weekend into a much easier experience. Customer service, honesty, and professionalism like this are exactly why I continue choosing Enterprise. If you're renting in the Richmond District, this is the location I'd recommend.

On May 20 at 5:01 pm, I received a voicemail message from Nick essentially stating that he had been trying to locate a 7-seat SUV for me for the "past couple of days" but that it had been challenging. I called back at 6:43 p.m., but the office closed at 6pm. I called the following day at 8:24 am and spoke to Vincent, the Branch Manager. He essentially told me the same thing - stating that they didn't have an SUV at that given moment and that they would call me when they secure one. When I asked why they would confirm an SUV reservation if they did not have the vehicle, his response was, "That's a good question." Since I needed the car in less 4 hours and they could not guarantee anything, I decided to cancel the reservation. Vince sent me an email at 8:43 am, stating, in part: "When we connected today, I understand you preferred not to proceed under those circumstances." Okay, where do I begin?!? First of all, it was not my preference to cancel the reservation I booked months ago. To continue to sit around and wait for you guys to continue working on TRYING to secure an SUV for my rental would be absurd and, quite frankly, just plain stupid. I needed the vehicle in less than 4 hours. So, while it was NOT my preference to cancel, I had no other logical choice!!! Second, if you guys had been trying to secure a vehicle for me for a "couple of days," I would have appreciated a phone call a lot sooner (NOT 7 hours prior to the scheduled pick up) - allowing me to explore other alternatives. Does that sound reasonable to you guys? Does that make sense? How about not confirming a reservation when you guys don't have the vehicle? Does that sound logical? This is just a quick review for folks out there looking for a rental place. I plan to write to the company's CEO and Better Business Bureau. As we all know, they won't listen!!! But consumers will... I love how the company's response below directs me to their website - unbelievable. Clearly, they're not in the business of making things "right!"

My husband had to wait over 2 hours, and the processing of those who had pick ups earlier than us was molasses / snail slow (insert any given adjectives) so that was quite frustrating. When it finally got to our turn, we got a different level vehicle than we had booked so that the SUV given to us was a major gas guzzler which we obviously did not appreciate. Thankfully, we knew we won't have to fill up till we got back to our hometown where gas prices are more reasonable than SF proper. +1 Star for the staff in charge giving customers who have waited so long (pretty much everyone that morning) a waiver from having to fill up on gas for the rental car return, that was a nice gesture and we appreciated it as we would definitely pick a gas saver vehicle vs the major gas guzzle (it was a. American car, sadly) which consumed 1/2 a tank of gas just going from SF back to Sac. This can be compared to the Korean branded SUV (smaller yes, but not by much and plenty big enough for our needs for this trip) that we rented from another rental company which had SO many choices for us that we had a hard time picking one, which used barely 1/4 tank for us to drive from Sac to SF. It turns out that this Avis location did not have cars on their lot ready for their customers and had to send a bunch of their staff in 1 van to pick up all the vehicles they needed from their SFO location to this one near the embarcadero so that was why it took so long. Each vehicle had to be cleaned on the inside and go through the car wash. Perhaps they needed to pick up cars from SFO earlier before their customers' scheduled pick up time and maybe even late in the night the day before. In short, it was a disappointing experience, and thank God we were not in a hurry to get somewhere like many of the other customers were, who has to catch a flight or get somewhere on time. Otherwise, we'd been extra stressed, so we waited over 2 hours, from our pick up time, but at least we did get gas comped and the vehicle was relatively new although quite gas consuming and not the smoothest drive, according to my husband. Hopefully Avis would be better next time.

When I finally reached the desk, I was told the car class I booked wasn't available. Instead, I was offered a Mustang Mach-E EV. I politely explained that I was driving 400 miles to Los Angeles and a non-Tesla EV wouldn't work due to the lack of reliable charging infrastructure along that route, and the fact that I was traveling with young children. I also explained that I'd be happy to take a Tesla if one is available. Despite having zero experience with EVs, the representative argued with me, insisting it would be fine - meaning she doesn't care if we get stranded out of nowhere when the car runs out of charge! Next, she offered a few pickup trucks. After walking to the parking garage to inspect them, I found none of them had bed covers--meaning my luggage would be exposed to the elements and theft. When I pointed this out, she grew visibly annoyed and gave me an ultimatum: take what's available or leave. Reservations at Avis mean nothing; they just hand you whatever happens to be sitting on the lot. Seeing the exact same issue happen to the customers ahead of me confirmed this isn't an isolated incident. I walked one block over to Enterprise, made a last-minute reservation, and was treated with respect. The representative understood my needs and got me on the road in a suitable car right away. I've rented with Enterprise for 20 years, and they always honor reservations. To @Avis Corporate: You offer specific car classes on your website for a reason. Customers choose them based on their actual travel needs. Honoring those reservations should be the bare minimum. This is not the only bad experience I had with Avis, and I would never rent with Avis ever again.

I had the absolute worst experience from Hertz this week. And before I get to that, I want to highlight something horrible that set off the rental. The internet was down so even though I pre-checked in on the app, I was delayed. Then he decided to do it with paper form, but he took a photo of my driver's license and credit card. WHY THE HELL did he do that? He claimed he didn't want it on the form. So instead, was it okay to have it on the phone? I was NOT happy with that and asked that it be deleted, and he said he would when the internet was back up. I am still worried about potential fraud or theft. And it gets worse.  On my way to my destination, I blew a tire on the very busy six-lane Hwy. 101. I called 911, and the dispatcher alerted a tow truck driver for roadside clearance. She also said, because I was alone, to keep my seatbelt on and lock my doors. How very reassuring.  An officer arrived and offered to change the tire for me while we waited for the tow. He popped the trunk: NO SPARE TIRE. He said he had never seen that before. There was a jack and a spot for it. But the tire was removed.  Because Hertz removed a basic simple safety tool, I had to be towed from the highway and dropped underneath an overpass. (The company's role is only to remove vehicles, not to help beyond that.) There was trash and debris everywhere, broken down cars, and apartments that were junky. I WAS SCARED.  I called Hertz and the bot that answered kept telling me my reservation was cancelled, which it was not because I obviously had my car. It was very stressful. I finally talked to a real person who contacted a AAA towing company. I picked up a new vehicle at the airport Hertz - the rep there was very nice. But by then it was almost 5 hours after I picked up my car and I was only driving what should have taken 30 minutes. I missed lunch, a business meeting and other work time.  I was charged $120 for the tow - WHEN I WAS PUT INTO A SITUATION BY HERTZ in San Fran. NOT the end of the story. When I returned the new vehicle on Feb. 4 at Fisherman's Wharf site, the rep shrugged and said not all vehicles have spares. I said it has a jack and a spot for the tire - the tire was missing. Then he backpedaled and said it depends on the state where the vehicle came. THAT IS AWFUL.  It should not matter if I rent a car from California or Arkansas or Illinois or Texas. SOMEONE at Hertz put me at risk, and there was no remorse, concern or attempt to fix.  This is a massive safety concern.

He then signed the return document and wrote "No new damages were detected." To protect ourselves, we also took a detailed, time-stamped video of the whole car (interior and exterior, with close-ups) at drop-off, clearly showing there was no damage. Despite all of that, we later received a letter from Sixt claiming we had damaged the car and trying to hold us financially responsible. It feels like they're ignoring their own employee's signed report and our clear video evidence. This has turned what should have been a simple rental into a frustrating dispute. Based on this experience, I do not trust Sixt's post-rental damage process and would strongly caution others to be extremely careful--or consider renting elsewhere.
