Avoca is a prime example of a local business establishing itself as a community member! The coffee itself is fantastic and the Brunch Bros often start off a Sunday with a latte, even pre-brunch. The staff always seem to be in great spirits! It also makes for a great place to relax or work on your laptop. The coffee beans are roasted by Avoca themselves and are delicious for homemade coffee. Hmm, kinda torn on this review... A.) I love that FW has another cool independent coffee shop (they are rare there!) B.) Some of the staff and one of the owners (I recognized him from their website) were looking at me uber stink-eye/snooty and weren't too friendly when I came in to take a look at the menu and ask some questions C.) It's in a good location, right across the street from Spiral Diner D.) The hot mocha I ordered was a little too thick and "chewier" than expected... But not necessarily bad... E.) They roast their own coffee there! That's cool. F.) They close early on Sundays (5pm) which kinda sucks in my book. I drove over there at like 5:05 and was mega sad hah. G.) The interior is nice and clean feeling. You can tell the place used to be a mechanic's garage. I love Avoca. It's located in a funky part of Fort Worth that I just adore, and across the street from my favorite restaurant. My friends and I have been known to eat and then walk to Avoca to enjoy some post-dinner coffee. Unlike Starbucks, I haven't seen any caramel fraps or pink lime drinks, but the coffee Avoca serves is authentic and very, very good. For those of us who don't consume dairy products, they have soy creamer on hand. My husband doesn't drink coffee, so he drinks the hot tea. There is a chocolate shop located in the building, but I haven't tried it yet, so I can't comment on it. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, which I enjoy. Been here twice in town visiting my parents from Houston for the week. Yesterday, I ordered an iced coffee (cold brew) and my girlfriend ordered the same but with a shot of espresso, which is a pretty normal at the coffee shops we frequent (all independent). The guy yesterday recommended they just add more cold brew concentrate (instead of adding the shot) and rather than create a stir, she said okay, 'we'll try it your way.' Went back today, tried ordering the same thing and again they suggested the concentrate instead of the shot. I said, 'we tried that yesterday, and it's not the same.' Can we have it with a shot in it? The barista asked his boss I guess to his left (haha) and the man (large, hefty man, orange dreads), said 'we don't add hot to cold' and wouldn't serve us the drink. I guess if we were trying to order a freaking caramel macchiato like they sell at Starbucks, I understand, but I'm just not sure why they wouldn't make us the drink. It's pretty easy. Add the shot, add some ice, then the iced coffee. Oh well. I was really hoping we'd finally found an independent coffee house here. Guess we'll just tough it out 'til we're back in a city with lots of independent coffee shops. It seems like we encountered a big fish in a small pond. Sitting at Avoca right now with a friend, enjoying a my second cup of Yerba Mate Chai Tea. My friend ordered a vanilla latte and thought it was good enough to order two 12oz cups...I'm eagerly waiting to see what the caffeine does to him. I usually hate sitting at coffee shops. I don't understand sitting somewhere for hours upon hours. I rather do that at home or at least somewhere with alcohol. But I needed some place to sit for a while in Fort Worth and figured I'd give Avoca a shot. A lot of small coffee shops have come and quickly closed in Fort Worth so it's good to see Avoca relatively busy. My tea is great and the latte is pretty good too. There's delicious looking homemade cakes on the counter and chocolate treats from Dude, Sweet Chocolate. I'm on a healthy "lifestyle plan" so I'm avoiding both. But maybe next time. The space is big, airy and bright which is nice but it lacks the cozy feeling I like about coffee shops. The staff doesn't seem particularly friendly, at least to me but some other people got a free piece of chocolate and very enthusiastic greetings. I might come back next time I'm in town. read more

Overall, I'm a fan. I liked this place enough to go back, and I'll probably frequent it a lot since I live in the area. However, there are some things I didn't like. I'll start there... It was kind of uncomfortable ordering from a menu that didn't have prices. I know that good coffee is worth every dime, and I'm a big supporter of organic non-commodity coffees. So, it's not like I expect it to be cheap. I just like to know if I'm ordering a $7 specialty drink or a $4 one. That kind of thing matters when you're on a budget. In the meantime, I'll probably just be safe and keep ordering hot, black coffee. That only cost me $2.71 after tax last time I went -- a price I can happily afford. On the upside (the stuff I love about the place) -- the staff is really friendly. I've been in there three times with different people and felt that way. Also, they didn't rush me out one day when I went in to work on a paper for class. In fact, someone offered to get me a glass of water if I wanted (rather than ask me if I wanted to another cup of coffee). I also like the space. It's really open and relaxed. Annnnnd they had bike racks. That's pretty important to me, since I recently moved from Lubbock where bike racks didn't exist at local businesses. Plus (and this is so cool) they use compost-able coffee cups for to-go hot coffee and cups made out of corn plastic for cold drinks! read more

Went here on a whim today. Its in a nice district. I like the fact that they have a room for processing the coffee beans they get. They don't appear to be prepackaged like you see at other places. The baristas are great and helpful. Every other song that plays here is a Bob Dylan song. What's not to like!? I felt like I was back in Denton at Jupiter House (my first love). The coffee is great and the bagel I ate was pretty good too. Its a simple place but I think that's what makes it so appealing. Atmosphere is quiet and inviting. Prices are great too. I have been in love with Avoca since the first time I visited it during the Art Goggle a few months ago. I've gotten many different drinks both hot and cold and have yet to be disappointed. I also love the fact that they roast their own beans there on the premises and that they also carry Dude Sweet Chocolates (its nice not to have to drive all the way out to Bishop Arts every time I need a chocolate fix. Speaking of Dude, Sweet: they have actually teamed up with Avoca to specially formulate their mocha (totally drool-worthy). Although their coffee and pastries tend to be a bit pricey I think this is an excellent replacement for Starbucks because the coffee is better and has a much more relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. read more

Lovely atmosphere. Comfortable seating and tables with WiFi of course. The coffee is organic and delicious. The syrups are made from scratch and organic as well. My favorite is the New Orleans with vanilla. We also tried a cappuccino, chai latte, and vanilla latte. Our group gave the lattes 3 out of 5 stars. It was slightly bland. My sister had the chai and said the powder on top is an overkill. Overall, great place to get some work done and relax. It is in a very hipster area. I love the huge mural on the wall. The interior is decorated very nicely and the cafe is very spacious. It just had a real chill vibe to it. They have an assortment of chocolate goodies and I had one of the best brownies I had ever had in my life. Pricy but it's worth it. Avoca is a little slice of Berkley in the heart of Texas. The vibe is laid back, almost indifferent, and the coffee is strong and roasted in-house. I love the seating area here, it's the perfect place to kick back with a novel and enjoy a leisurely Saturday afternoon. I would like to start out by saying the coffee is absolutely delicious, best cup of coffee I think I've ever had, which is the only reason I keep coming back. In saying this, there are a few things (in my opinion) that need improvement. 1. The coffee itself isn't a terrible price considering the quality, however, it seems that I always get jipped because they leave a quarter of the already small cup (the only size available) unfilled, even when I don't ask for creamer room. To add onto the disappointment , if you decide to get a refill, you only get a 10% discount which is only about 20 cents. I mean.. Come on guys. 2. Barely any outlets unless you sit on the far right wall, but more than likely you won't be lucky enough to get one of these seats because it seems they're always occupied. Guys, it's 2016.. Get some more outlets. 3. Every time I'm here, it seems that there's always left over trash and cups on the tables. I understand this isn't entirely their fault, but it wouldn't hurt to go around every once in awhile and pick it up a little! Other than that, the baristas are extremely friendly and get your order out fast, which is nice. And like I stated before, best damn coffee around. This is my favorite coffee shop in Fort Worth. This is where I buy my beans. They roast their beans right next to the coffee shop. The place is quiet and almost looks like it use to be a garage for a mechanic. It has big windows that let's in sunlight. Good fast wifi and recently upgraded their couches. It can get crowded because a lot of people study there so be prepared. Their coffee....oh man....it is soo good. They have a variety of different single origin beans and they do different types of pours, from v60 to Chemex. They also have delicious cold brew which is one of my favorites (other than mine hah). One unique coffee thing they have is called a "Yama tower" which is slow drip cold brew contraption. It's expensive to buy and it comes in a little shot glass.....but it is so smooth and it tastes so good. They also have the regular expresso drinks. I've never had them but I've smelled the chai latte and it smelled delicious. My friends love their lattes. They also have this drink called the Charlie sheen, which is Mexican coke and cold brew. Not a fan of it but it's a popular one. They have treats like bagels and muffins from a local bakery. They are ok....but the reason I go is for their coffee. The baristas are nice and "hipster". Haha, but go there enough, and they know you by name. read more

Great place to get some work done. I personally like the small half booths against the wall when I'm settling in for a long visit. My latte's have been tasty and I've developed a soft spot for the bacon cheddar scones. There is a little part of me that wishes they had more food options, studying makes me hungry. I think the on site roasting is cool and I'm no coffee snob so I have no opinions on the earthy notes that I've seen mentioned in other reviews. This is my go-to place to get some caffeine and study! They have tons of seating, with options ranging from couches to long tables with outlets in them. I personally can't study unless I'm seated at a table, so I'm always slightly worried that I'll arrive and there won't be anything available, but I'm always able to find a seat. They have a short menu you can choose from, both in terms of coffee and tea, but from the rest of the reviews it seems they limit their menu to things they can make perfectly. There are also some snacks and bags of coffee you can buy at the front. I always order an iced soy chai tea latte with a shot of espresso, which always comes out perfectly and topped with a pinch of cinnamon across the top. Avoca is also the ONLY place I've ever been to that does not charge you extra for opting for soy milk! Their wifi is fast, their staff is fun and willing to talk coffee with you, and it's a great place to get some work or socializing accomplished. read more

I love that they roast their own beans and I love that it's within walking distance. My husbands coffee was good, weak for me but not bad. He said he liked his coffee from home better. My orange iced tea was nice. Don't like the seating, it is just not very comfortable, feels cold, empty. I know it's a new place, but it just feels very mechanical. Is that even possible? It seems like there is a lot of wasted space. My husband did not like the double door entrance for some reason. I guess I want a cozy coffee shop that is warm and inviting. Remember The Bricks End on Camp Bowie? No prices. I don't like having to ask, I feel cheap but I would like to know what I'm about to spend. We would have gotten a slice of cake that looked amazing if there had been a price. By the way the cakes and pastries looked scrumptious! I am glad this place opened, but I think maybe it needs a little time to get it together. The coffee and espresso drinks are tasty, but all the times I've been there they are cool or lukewarm. It's not that hard to get water or milk to the proper temp, so I'm wondering if it's poor training/lack of thermometers. The space could be really great; it needs some art/etc, something to soften it up. The pastries are delicious. Finding this place is like getting a new crush: lots of wonderful endorphins tempered with a vague fear of defects yet to be revealed. Avoca, don't hurt me, 'cause this could be wuv. I've lived in Austin for the past three years, so moving to Fort Worth was bittersweet: yes, I'd be getting beautiful, beautiful money from my new job, but I'd lose Austin's wonderful collection of coffee shops and cheap, hipstery hangouts. Well, fear not, fellow exiles, for this place keeps most the best of those while eschewing their pretentiousness. True, it isn't open 24 hours like glorious Bennu, and there isn't anything like the food range of Austin Java, but Avoca's virtues are readily apparent. The coffee (which tastes great) is roasted in house. The music is eclectic without being tragically hip/so-obscure-it-hurts-in-places-you've-probably-haven't-heard-of, set at a volume high enough to to audible without drowning out your conversation or caffeine/adderall-addled studying. There are plenty of power outlets and places to sit, including a couple of comfortable easy chairs and sofas. The place is almost spotlessly clean, yet avoids the cold-hearted sterility of the average Starbucks. High ceilings, tasteful light fixtures and other decor make for a great aesthetic, and (wonder of wonders) the place is insulated enough to keep out the summer heat. There's a lot out front and what appears to be plenty of street parking. Cup of black coffee (aside: stop ruining coffee with sugar and cream, you babies) and a cookie cost me about four bucks. I have only two real complaints: 1) that it isn't open later, especially on Sunday, when the place closes down at five; and 2) there are not more people here! I liked that they roast their own coffee but the drinks were pretty boring and not strong enough. The other set back was that they have this huge parking lot and NO outdoor seating. I've been there a few times when I've been in that part of town and seen a few bad patterns emerge. This is probably the best coffee that Fort Worth has to offer but Fort Worth is known for cows and steak.... not it's coffee. Coffee- B+: espresso is pretty good for roasting in house . Can be too earthy and bland though. I've had a macchiato, pure espresso, americano , latte and cappuccino. All are okay but the cappuccino was essentially a latte. Service-C-: Every other time I go in, there is a service error. Wrong drinks being made. Drinks being made really slowly. The most severe was the first time I came in they literally forgot to make my drink (even after being reminded) over the course of 15 minutes. The owner apologized and refunded my money however. Don't expect too much warmth from the barista's either. Atmosphere-B- : It's pretty open with natural light. Decent seating. Nothing special. If you're on the south-side of fort worth it's worth going too but it certainly doesn't register on a larger coffee map. read more

As an avid coffee connoisseur, I can be pretty critical of my coffee. When I read that they roast their own coffee beans I had to try it for myself. I am so excited about this place that I could not wait to get home to type up this review that I am actually sitting in Avoca as I type. Service: The baristas are all very sweet and nice. I came here and forgot my wallet and of course the girl in my panicked like a mf. I felt terrible but the dude at the register was super sweet about it and I managed to scrounge up enough change in my car to cover my cup of coffee for the most part. Ambiance: Love! It's a great place to come to get work done or sit around and lounge. It is a very welcoming environment with plenty of space to spread out your work and the noise level is bearable to get stuff done or just stick in your headphones and go to work. There are also pieces of art displayed on the wall that gives it that extra something that most coffee shops lack. The coffee: I am impressed since they roast their own coffee. The coffee art always tickles my fancy and gives it that extra touch. The taste is good but not great. Let me just make it clear that it's not bad coffee! I had a vanilla latte and it did its justice to satisfy my daily coffee must have. Also, the price is very reasonable and worth your buck. I am not a coffee drinker but I sure have grown to love coffee shops like Avoca. You can really tell the staff's love for what they do by how much is put into each of the drinks they make. But let's talk about their chai tea latte --- the best I've ever had --- ever. The mixture of spices used in their chai tea gives you the perfect bite --- leaving you with a warm and cozy feeling after your first sip. Oh and did I tell you how beautiful my drink was? In the end we managed to crowd around their bar area and had a great time. The staff were all friendly and helped to suggest a tea drink that I wouldn't have thought of trying. Pour-over is one of my favorite beverages. Unfortunately, Texas is a bit behind the loop on the latest caffeine trends. We just stick to planting Starbucks and the like around business hubs and hope that people will flock. They do. And it sucks for those that would like a more hand-crafted, non-standardized caffeinated beverage. Avoca sits on the "gourmet" strip of old school Magnolia, and it is producing some quality buzz dranks. The atmosphere is very open and inviting, and there is even some trailer grub outside--talk about becoming hip fast! Inside, there are locally baked baked goods. The drink menu is standard, but I saw pour-over and knew that I was sold. My friend and I went with the Guatamalan and Peruvian blends. Good? You betcha. A bit light on the flavor profiles, but tasty nonetheless. Of course, you will always go to Rosebud or Paris if you are lookin' for a greasy spoon and a "cup of joe". I am in no way knocking that style of a morning ritual; heck, I love black from an automatic brewer to go with my eggs and bacon. It's a gem for sure. I've been here a couple times and for the most part, it's pretty fairly quiet and you can have some time to yourself. But groups of people come in to socialize too, so you can get what you want out of a coffee shop experience. It's a roaster facility too so that's also cool. The staff is friendly but it was kind of confusing sometimes when I was waiting for my drink and also you can be intimidated when you're not sure what you can order to drink.
