The good: the friendly servers, the view from the patio. The bad: the pancakes, the crowded parking lot. The ugly: the speed of the service. I don't mind a slow pace at a crowded restaurant, but the slow speed here is very, very slow. After waiting 10 minutes for a server to come to our table, I went up to the hostess stand and asked her to check if we had been assigned a server. The table next to us wasn't as patient - they got up and left after waiting for at least ten minutes, if not fifteen, for someone, anyone, to come and acknowledge their presence. This was our second time there, and it was just as slow as it was about two year's ago. My advice: go there if you want to sit and eat with a nice view of the Trinity River and you have no place to be for a good 60-90 minutes. Otherwise, go elsewhere for coffee or breakfast/lunch where the pace of the service is reasonable and realistic. read more

Ok, the food is great. I hit the breakfast crows since I'm working a project around the corner. The Migas was on the table a few days ago, it was really good and the vinaigrette was actually a good addition. The Simple Brekky was a good one today, with scrambled eggs. The Hash is very tasty with the mix of potatoes and sweet potatoes with various seasonings. The bacon has good flavor and is thick. Food, 4.5 stars for sure! Where it drops is the black coffee. I'm not sure who gave the instruction on brewing, but this coffee is VERY ACIDIC!!! Ouch, you need creamer just to tame it down. Incredibly acidic, it pretty much makes it undrinkable, and I'm used to overbrewed Military coffee! Ick. Where this rating drops more, is the service. They are friendly when you walk in. They are friendly bringing your water and taking your order. After you get your food, good luck getting anyone to pay attention. EVERY time I've been here, it's a task to get anyones attention just to PAY! Today alone, my waitress passed by me 3 times, with my card in hand and waving it, I even said something AND tapped her side to get her attention.... Nope, .... she wasn't having it. This location would be SO easy to dine and dash since they don't come back to see how your doing, see if you need more coffee, the water they leave a bottle and you pour it yourself. Ok, I like the full bottle at the table, but this is an area where they are relying on you, the customer, to do more work. However for me, that means less of a tip, especially if all they are doing is taking my order and pretty much anyone brings the food. I'm old school and still believe a person should be tipped as a reward for doing an exceptional job servicing you and making you feel special and not just another number. This place does not make me feel that way. I will say, the view is nice being on the river. There is lots of windows. The free WiFi that's offered at the shopping complex is inaccessible inside the building. They do have outside dining on the riverfront next to the walking/running/biking path. The patio is also fairly small, yet thoughtfully spaced so it still feels comfortable and not crowded. My only downside was the service. Given the size of the restaurant, I didn't expect such long gaps between check ins from our waitress, and the food took a while to come out as well. Worth it if you're not in a hurry. The best cortado I've had in my life! I initially came in because I thought this was more so a coffee shop and was planning on getting some coffee and getting work done. I had an excellent brunch at Ascension. It was a pretty busy place, but they keep things moving and wait times aren't bad. I love all the windows and patio seating that look out to the Trinity. I started with the sunrise date latte- delicious. This latte was silky smooth and the orange zest balanced the date syrup and added to the presentation. For brunch, the Lox bagel did not disappoint. Heaping salmon and a dill cream cheese made this dish filling and memorable. The bagel was nice and dense and provided a neutral palette for all the flavor. The food and the coffee were both very delicious. I always love their coffee, especially their cold brew, but the pour over was really good as well. My wife enjoyed the hash as well. The atmosphere in the place is always busy, especially on Saturday mornings and it's kind of fun if you enjoy that, which I do. I will say they do get pretty busy so sometimes it can be hard to flag down someone to your table because of all the people coming through, but all the staff are still very helpful and nice and I have no complaints there. I usually don't like my savory food mixed with sweet, but their sweet potatoes and sauce were a perfect combination. Mad props to the chef or whoever came up with this dish. I am a fan of this dish for sure. I also ordered their winter flight, which consisted of Sunrise date latte, Pear Thee Well, and Snow-Jicha. They all had their unique flavors were unique. It was a good flight, especially for people who are into matcha drinks, since hojicha is similar in texture to matcha. My friend had a soup and an iced tea that she really liked. She had stopped by for a coffee drink this morning before we met up for lunch. This was truly such a delightful spot. On the patio, with the view of the trinity two steps away and a shared bottle of wine with a dear friend, there is little else you can ask for in life. I dropped in for the 1/2 wine bottles after 3pm and split a bacon and egg breakfast sandwich with my guest for about $50 with tip. The servers were very friendly and attentive, checking in with us throughout our two hour stay. For the view and the value of a nice snack and good wine, it really can't be beat. The only thing that could have improved my visit was anything explaining the parking situation so that I didn't have to circle around in confusion figuring out where the restaurant was in the construction in relation to where I was allowed to park for the restaurant and some umbrellas out on the patio so that the sun bouncing off massive glass windows didn't blind me from looking at the menu. It took a while to get my Sauvignon blanc but they were very up front about the delay and my guest prefers non-chilled drinks so it was no issue for us. I have been here a few times just to get a coffee drink before work or during lunch break, and every time, it takes so long that I am either late to work or rushing out. I am always polite about it and I always try to come back and give it the benefit of the doubt, but it was this last time today that I had to write a review. I came in, no line at all, stood at the counter for what seemed like an eternity, got passed by multiple employees, and even looked directly at the staff making drinks to see if they could get my attention and nobody seemed to want to work. Even a person that looked like management walked right past me and started talking to another employee without even acknowledging me. No one ever asked to take my order or if I've been helped. I just left and went to Mamaka, even though I wanted a specific drink from Ascension. I hate that this is one of only two options for coffee in this plaza when I am at work, as I can't even get a quick coffee from them and have to use my entire lunch break to get a simple drink. We were immediately greeted when we entered and when we told the hostess we needed to use the restroom but also ordering a coffee to go, she kindly directed us to the restrooms and where to order the coffee. Walking up to the coffee bar with my daughter, the barista / cashier greeted us with a smile and was just as sweet and accommodating. The barista who made our drink was very considerate and asked if we wanted whipped cream since we subbed oat milk. The drink was decorated with the seasonal green and red sprinkles for an extra punch of festivity. Loved it. The restaurant itself is very cute and very clean, but I can't comment on the food yet.
