DON'T GO HERE!! What a disaster. Started with waitress telling us all the stuff the DIDN'T have on a Friday night. Ordered appetizer that came out AFTER my meal. They were fried oysters and tasted very fishy. I eat raw oysters and these were not good. My wife's hibachi did not come out till 15 minutes after my meal and appetizer. I feel bad writing this review but here it is. I used to really enjoy this place. The staff was always friendly and the food was great. We don't eat out a ton but liked Awabi when we did. But over the last 2 years I have tried numerous times to eat here. Quite a few of those times had unexpected closures for who knows what with no notice or posting online. Other times id come here and although open their mismanagement resulted in multiple items on the menu not being available. The most ridiculous version of this was when I was told they had no sushi rice before 6pm on a Friday. Today I went in with my kids and tried to order the uni and chicken wings. Both unavailable. Very good sushi and very good service at this small restaurant on the pedestrian mall in downtown Winchester. Outside tables in the summer time are comfy but I opted to sit inside with the air conditioning. Several different Asian options on the menu, so those who aren't into sushi should still have something they can enjoy. I opted for two different rolls with a Kirin (Japanese beer) and enjoyed them very much. Well assembled and plated nicely, the Spider roll and the Loudon Street rolls were tasty. The sauces definitely complimented the flavor of the fish here and were easy to pick up with chop sticks and stuff into my mouth. Yum! Great stuff and a great choice for dinner. read more

The fish is very fresh and additional value add - they recommend what to try and how to try it! Sushi flavors are great and selection of sake is very very good: they don't have more than the 20 options, but what they have 100% hits the spot! First time here, and we will definitely be back. It's ran by a husband and wife team. The wife is very friendly and helpful and I can tell her husband takes a lot of pride in his sushi. We had the 2 sushi area favorites, louden roll and Apple blossom. They were perfection. I wasn't sure about the Apple roll before we ordered it, but amazingly the apple, cucumber, and raw fish complemented each other and was a joy on my palate. The louden roll flavors all blended, yet could be tasted separately. I had the mild spicy ramen and my husband had the mandukguk. We have never had Korean food before, but the ramen was a familiar, comfort flavor and the mandukguk was a delightful blend of beef and spicy flavors. The dumplings in it were smooth and bursting with flavor. My husband couldn't stop eating it. Came for a light lunch Sunday. We ordered the seaweed salad, house salad and the Christmas roll. The house salad was just iceburg and a small amount of shredded carrots but the homemade dressing was delectable. The seaweed salad was standard and good but a tad small serving for price. The christmas roll was excellent. The eel was perfectly cooked, a nice slight searing without being overdone and topped over a generously meaty roll. Hubs ended up seperating the eel from the roll bc the eel is so good and so flavorful that you lose the rest of the roll flavor (which is good on its own). The great thing about having a Japanese girlfriend is all the amazing homemade Japanese food I've been able to eat over the last few years from Her Chef Grandfather. Since then, I've realized how amazing Japanese food can be and how hard it is to find authentic versions of it out, especially in small, southern towns. This is why we were so surprised to stumble onto this place in Winchester. From the artwork to Miso flavor, this place is legit. The owners are so kind and are cooking many of their parent's Korean recipes and even bring back their Kimchi ingredients from Korea and make it in house. We were greeted with a bowl of Miso soup which tasted just like my girlfriend's grandfather's soup. We followed it up with fried pork gyoza which was very tasty. Then we ordered the Kimchi Ramen which was spicy and delicious and the Pork Don which had some of the best tasting rice I've ever had. To finish it all off, we had Red Bean and Green Tea Mochi (and the owner was sweet enough to add in a Mango Mochi as well). The house sake was so good that grandma commented on it, green tea only gennmai cha but kept hot with some encouragement. The reason I give it 2 stars though is because it is very expensive for the portions you receive. The udon, which while great, is very small, and they charged me $9 for it. $9?! I better get a pot for that! I felt hungry after I ate there, but that's the walking mall in downtown Winchester, you pay a lot for not a whole lot, and I understand that (I've eaten at just about every place on the walking mall, most of the restaurant establishments are like that). Additionally, the sushi was small too, unlike Okinawa, which I feel has the best sushi in Winchester hands down. I also felt rushed when I ate there. While the staff catered to my tastes, they also rushed me out by giving me my check and everything too quickly to get ready for the next person. The place was not busy at all on a Thursday afternoon and felt no need to be hassled out the door. Plus, it was raining outside, all the more reason to kind of relax and finish my water, but I guess they didn't want me holding up business, so I just left without any incident. We came here on recommendation of a friend who really doesn't leave the Old Town area much, and I was a bit skeptical. I am so glad we took his word on it! While not the biggest place in the world, Awabi easily accommodated a party of 5 at 5:30ish on a Saturday night (Right after the Pride Festival, so the Mall was hopping). The staff was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was quaint, but no-frills. You come for good Sushi/Japanese/Korean food, and you get it in spades. The sushi was extremely fresh, well made and tasty. I ended up ordering seconds on the nigiri because it was melt in my mouth fresh and good. It didn't take long to make, and there was a good variety of common favorites and house inspired creations. Miso soup was on the house. That's a nice gesture. We had planned on eating somewhere else, but they had closed early, so we wound up at Awabi. Wasn't really in a sushi mood (unusual for me), si I got the spicy Korean Teriyaki. It was not overly spicy, but the spice overwhelmed the flavor of the teriyaki. My husband got sushi, side it was meh. But can't trust him, he doesn't know what good sushi tastes like :-) My son got a soup and an appetizer of Gyoza soup, which he said was pretty good and the crunchy avocado roll which was okay. My daughter got the Shumei soup (okay) and Awabi Chicken appetizer which was good. Even though they have outdoor seating available, they only have take out at this time and you are not allowed to eat at the tables :-( Overall disappointing.
