Brought my gf there for her birthday because she likes the bibimbob (dish served in a hot cast iron pot) and i guess they didn't think we knew what it was or were just too lazy and they served it to her in a regular bowl. My daughter was having her birthday during this crazy corona mess. All she asked for was sushi, but finding one open, and not just getting cheap grocery store sushi was a trek. Searching through yelp helped though. I ordered a random assortment of stuff, including dumpling soup (don't remember the real name of it), seaweed salad, miso soup, and 3 or 4 other sushi rolls to share. Everything was really good. The owner even included a few cookies for my kids to have. It is pricy, but that's to be expected with good sushi. We will order again, for sure. read more

Only small item is I would recommend they break down their vegetables more for their vegetable tempura (they were breaded and fried so large it made them difficult to enjoy). Very scary at first. Miso soup was really cloudy for some reason. Sushi didn't stick together at all. Spider roll was ok but I ate the inedible part of the crab cause I didn't know what it was. Wow! Awesome Sushi in Winchester?!? It is about time. We have decent Sushi at a couple of different places in town, see the other reviews. However, this was actually REALLY GOOD Sushi. Now, since he's only been open for a day, it could just be that everything is super fresh from that. However after talking to the owner/chef during our lunch today, I'm pretty sure he's going to keep quality at the highest levels. We had: Seaweed Salad, Miso, Shumai, Spicy California Roll, Cucumber Roll, Shitake (Marinate Mushroom) Roll, Hamaci (Yellowtail) Hand Roll, Uni (Sea Urchin), Maguro (Tuna), Tobiko (Flying Fish Roe), Shrimp Tempura Udon, Geisha Roll (Shrimp Tempura, spicy, etc), Vegas Roll (Deep Fried Eel & cream cheese roll), and Red Bean Mochi. We're not eating dinner tonight... :) Seaweed Salad was the average fare, it was fresh which is the most important thing. The Miso was awesome and not just microwaved real quick, didn't have tofu or seaweed in it, but that made it much easier to just drink with the Sushi as I like to. The Shumai while again, standard fare shipped in, was actually steamed as it should be instead of microwaved like everyone else does around here; some Japanese spicy mustard with the Shumai would have made it perfect, but they had Tempura sauce which was pretty good. The California/Cucumber/Shitake rolls were all excellently prepared. Very happy to be able to get Shitake roll here in Winchester, I've been missing that. The Hamachi was fresh and excellent and the hand roll was very well prepared as well. The Uni was from California (avoid Maine Uni, might as well drink a bottle of Iodine) and as good as everything else. Frankly all the Sushi was excellently prepared and some of the best I've had anywhere outside of San Fran, Los Angeles, and New York. Easily on par with Blue Ocean and Arigato/JRIII in Fairfax and almost as good as the place in McLean I can never remember the name of (big house looking place in the middle of a neighborhood like area) and Kaz Sushi Bistro downdown. Of course, I've lived in Winchester for 5 years now, maybe all those places suck these days. :) The Udon was simply the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. The flavor was incredible, the noodles were cooked perfectly, the poached egg was perfectly runny and blended with the soup to make it incredible. Wow, just wow! We were already full but the chef owner, Marcus, just forced us to finish the meal off with some Red Bean Mochi... my favorite. :) Basically, the best Sushi meal in Winchester by far, and the best we've had in a very long time. I have been here a few times and love it. I think the udon here may become my new obsession. The steaming cast iron pot with a yummy fried pork cutlet just warms my soul. The rolls are also fantastic. They know how to do a simple tuna and avocado roll with ease. The Loudon roll is also quite fantastic. My friend and I did not let any portion of the roll sit for long. I tend to get something complimentary when I go. One time it was miso soup and a salad, another time it was edamame. I don't know if they do things like this all of the time, or I just got lucky. Either way, I truly enjoy it. This is a fabulous place to dine on the walking mall. The atmosphere of Awabi is simply adorable. It is cozy and well decorated, plus it is clean. I also like that you get a Hershey Kiss with the bill. I think that is a sweet touch. read more

I have been there three times already since they opened and the fish has always been of the highest and freshest quality. If you're a fan of udon also, Japanese noodle soup, the udon is unbelievably good. They are very friendly, and their prices are very reasonable also. I particularly like the spicy salmon tempura roll. I usually eat nigiri and sashimi and if that's your thing then this is definitely the spot for you. This is, by far, the best place for sushi in town. Most importantly, the fish is fresh and high quality. The sushi chef and owner (Marcus), is clearly well-trained and enthusiastic about his food. Unlike many other places in Winchester, the sushi's fish is cut properly and served over the right amount of rice. The rolls are tight and keep together (even the deep-fried ones)--no big, floppy, thinly-sliced rolls here. It's all very easy to eat. The shumai was steamed, which let us enjoy its taste and texture. Other places in town microwave the shumai, so it's a thousand degrees on the inside--not fun. The miso soup at Awabi also isn't microwaved (again, unlike other places in town). It's also surprisingly good. I'd forgotten what miso soup was supposed to taste like. This is it. The gyoza (vegetarian or otherwise) is also very good. The udon is absolutely delicious. I've never had it quite like this. It's worth a trip just for the udon. For people unfamiliar with sushi, the menu lists the fish in English (as opposed to in Japanese, with the English in parentheses, if at all). If you are familiar with sushi and sushi restaurants, don't let this put you off. It surprised us a little (especially given the high quality of the fish and preparation), but it's of no consequence. I imagine it's just a way to ease new people into wonderfulness that is sushi. In our few trips since the opening, we've had a variety of the vegetable and fish rolls, as well as a couple of the special rolls, including the "Japanese lasagna". Everything was well-made and yummy. The deep-fried Vegas roll was excellent. The fact that Awabi had California uni made my dining companion's entire week. I didn't have any, but he said it was perfect. A special highlight was the sour plum roll. I haven't seen it on a menu at any of Winchester's sushi restaurants (and if I have seen it on a menu outside of town, I overlooked it). On our second visit, since everything was so good, we decided to give the unfamiliar a try. It was wonderful: pungent and strong and richly flavorful. The wasabi brought out the tastes (which may to too strong for some people). I urge anyone visiting Awabi to give it a try. Speaking of the wasabi, it isn't the green paste you may be used to. I don't know the technical terms, but it's looser in consistency, with bigger particles. It's stronger than the green paste type (but not overly so). It also tastes a little fresher. It's clearly superior to the green paste, just use a little less of it until you get used to it. It's been hard finding green tea ice cream in Winchester, even at Japanese restaurants. Awabi made my week by having mochi! Mochi ice cream is ice cream (duh) in a thin rice flour dough. They have it in green tea, red bean, and mango. We've only had the red bean and mango so far. Green tea, next trip! The only downside to Awabi is the wait staff. They're young and obviously inexperienced, not only in the Japanese restaurant setting, but at waitressing in general. They are, however, enthusiastic and friendly, which goes a long way. They've already improved over our three trips, and I know they'll get better, though the learning curve is steep. Yes, I made a Yelp account specifically to write this review. I've been in Winchester for five years now and I despaired of ever having good sushi within a short drive. I thought we'd have to move closer to DC for that to happen, but Awabi's opening brought the sushi to us. It's a genuine, professional sushi restaurant, and I could not be happier that it opened in town (and right next to a parking lot on the Old Town Mall). If you're in Winchester, or just passing through, give Awabi a try. It's only been around for a week, but I'd be heartbroken if there aren't enough discerning customers to support it. Mochi! So, to start off with I've spent several years in Korea with a few stops in And out Japan. By no means am I an expert food critic. But when food tastes as good as this, I have to pass it on. Staff are all attentive and courteous without being overbearing. On to the food; Bul-Gogi Bimbap, WOW.... Better than I remember (downtown Seoul restaurants). Made to order Sushi/sashimi. Beach House roll: I ordered mine with real crab vs crab stick. Very well made, great textures, served room temp as true sushi/sashimi should be. The garlic oil dipping sauce was very good, just enough to accent the flavor of the sushi without taking over. California roll: again, well made. Both flavor and textures were great. Sticky rice flavorful without being to sweet. Flying fish Row: amazing Crimson color, great texture with just a hint of tangy/ smoke flavor. I wanted more, but filled up too quickly. I would have added pictures, but I was to engrossed with enjoying the meal and celebrating the flavors I thought I had forgotten. There will definitely be a next time. read more

Awabi sits on picturesque Loudon Street at the center of Old Town Winchester, with tables spilling out onto the promenade. I stopped in after a long drive, early on a Monday evening, and found it empty. Nonetheless, the service was bright and attentive, and the menu gave the impression that Awabi serves more than workaday sushi. I sat at the sushi bar and ordered a tall Koshihikari Echigo beer - not something I'm accustomed to seeing on sushi menus back home. I started with a splendid sashimi appetizer, the Basil Tail, consisting of diced yellowtail marinated in sea salt, oil and basil - imaginative and delicious! Ordering a la carte, I had the Loudon roll (tempura shrimp & avocado, with cucumber, crab and scallion), as well as some nigiri Lobster and Tuna. I had also ordered Squid, but for some reason I ended up with Inarizushi - not really my cup of tea, but sweet and filling. The Loudon roll was a little over-dressed, but tasty, as were the Lobster and Tuna. For a weary road warrior at the end of a day's journey, despite a few glitches, Awabi was a welcome oasis, with a serene vibe and a surprisingly varied menu of good quality sushi. read more

Glad Jay recommended the Shitake and Sour Plum Roll. Both were fantastic and different from anything I've had before. I'm was not familiar with Udon soup until today. All I can say is Wow. We've been dying for some good sushi since moving to the Winchester area. After finding this place on Yelp, we decided to try it out. Located in the pedestrian mall of Old Town Winchester, the restaurant is a cozy place with a cool vibe. The decor is appropriate and not overpowering. They have a really varied menu, and it took us a bit of time to make up our minds as to what to eat. One thing I was dissapointed about was the drink selection, meaning non-alcoholic. They had Coke, Sprite, and unsweet tea. That's it. And the Cokes we ordered came in a can, with a glass of ice. Seemed a bit low brow for such a nice place. We settled on 2 Chef's Special Rolls, one Jumbo Roll, and one bento box to share between the three of us ( adults, one child). We first had the Fire Starter Roll (crab cucumber and jalepeno with a spicy sauce dusted with chili powder). It was delicious, but HOT! However, the heat did not stay in the mouth very long and was not overpowering. I am not a fan of spicy foods, but I enjoyed this one. Next we had the Ruby roll (tuna, crab, cream cheese, spicy mayo, chili pepper with tuna on top). This was a good roll, but it didn't knock me over. The tuna was fresh and delicious however. We ordered The Beach House jumbo roll, which was my favorite of the evening. Shrimp tempura with crab, cucumber, and scallions, served with a sesame butter dip sauce. This was divine, and the sesame butter was a perfect dip for the bites. We also ordered the Awabi Bento Box for the table to share...assorted tempuras, chicken terrayaki (so good and juicy and tender) with a california roll and fried rice. This was all very yummy. The house salad started with peanut dressing was also good, and the miso soup had such a depth of flavor I wanted more! The service was nice, and prompt, however the waitress did not check back with us on drink refills, which irritated me, especially since we had a number of spicy dishes. The other server did come by at one point to ask how everything was, and the sushi chef was very nice when we left. All in all, I thought it was well priced (our meal came to just under $50 before tip), and a very satisfying meal - especially for those of us who miss sushi! We stopped for lunch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. We basically wanted sushi and Googled a nearby spot. The atmosphere was cozy and service was very good. Our server was attentive, but not annoying. The little touches, like easy to read menus with a full ingredient list for each item, was a big plus. The decor was nice, too. We had the Loudoun roll, Boston roll, spicy tuna, and lollipop roll. The Loudoun roll was excellent, worth the trip. The Boston was okay, but didn't have much flavor. The spicy roll was also good, but a basic roll. The lollipop is novelty roll that is served on skewers a la lollipop style. It was kind of bland, though... like it needed a little more of something to give it a flavor punch. Soy, ginger and wasabi couldn't save it. There were plenty of the condiments, napkins and chopsticks. The cost was reasonable, though a tad steep on a couple of basic rolls. Our usual go-to sushi spot in Winchester is Chop Stick Cafe; however, we were craving sushi on a Sunday and unfortunately Chop Sticks is closed Sundays. A friend had recommended Awabi to me in the past, and they were open, so we decided to give them a try. We wanted to do a to-go order because not everyone felt like going out. Thus began our search for an online menu. First, their website link from Yelp didn't work and I couldn't find them on google. My husband managed to find the website (don't ask me how) and pulled up the menu. Decent though not nearly as big or diverse as Chop Stick. We all decided our orders & I call it in.....only to find out from the second roll that the menu on their website is outdated and some rolls no longer available. I was pointed to their Facebook page for a current menu & decided I would update our order & call back. So, we go to FB, and see pics of a menu. We update our order and call back....only to find out that the menu pics on FB are also outdated and be given instructions to locate the REAL menu on FB. At this point I just blindly pick 2 random rolls to swap for the ones no longer offered and move on as it was really getting frustrating. The owner was apologetic and polite; however, not having all of your menus up to date (we're talking YEARS behind not recent changes) makes it seem like the only business you really care about is your dine-in. So....after all of that we finally get our order placed & head to pick it up. We got the Christmas Eve, the Beach House, Spider Roll, Lollipop Roll, the Alaskan and 3 other I can't remember the name of because they were the last minute substitutions for the Cool Hamachi, Basil Tail and Tako Garden (no longer offered). All were delicious. Truly. My husband groaned in pleasure at the Beach House. They don't give you he usual small cups of soy sauce to-go. Just packets. My husband also commented that the to-go containers they use make it look like grocery store sushi, but that doesn't effect the quality so...meh. Each order (we ordered for 4 people) came with a small bowl of miso soup. A nice touch that we haven't gotten with any other sushi to-go. Visited this family owned restaurant when my boyfriend and I were looking for some places to eat at for dinner. I'm glad we stopped by here! The service was great! When I try to describe Awabi any compliment seems backhanded. I enjoy it because it's just what I'd expect from a Japanese restaurant without being poor or exceptional in quality. We've tried most of the dishes and were satisfied, but not necessarily wowed. The pricing seems fair (except for maybe the shumai, but that contains seafood) and the atmosphere is welcoming. When my partner and I want to go out for familiar food we usually agree on Awabi because we know it will be a pleasant experience. It's a perfect balance for us. I'm inclined to give them 4 stars based on my preference for Japanese, but realistically I think 3 stars are closer to most people's expectations. Some might be disappointed in the size of non-specialty maki rolls, but my husband still finds them filling. The venue has an outdoor patio near the fountain and seating inside. In fact, you really can't beat the location. During the warmer months Awabi and it's lighter fare are absolutely perfect for a night out. The sushi bar's ingredients and some other tools of the trade are visible, but I think it adds to the charm. The managers always seem cheerful when we come in and the wait staff is fine. If there's anything I want to highlight it's the veggie rolls. The first time we ate at Awabi they had a (seasonal?) veggie roll, the Thanksgiving roll with sweet potato and jalapeño as the main flavors. It was fantastic and totally endeared me to them. It's been my experience that a lot of places don't do much with vegetarian options beyond cucumber and avocado. So to find a pleasing and interesting combination indicates some care in their menu. In fact, vegetarian items are one of my favorite ways to evaluate a vendor- so much can be done and if done well that indicates skill and taste. What could make Awabi a 4- or 5-star restaurant? The dishes are so close to what I'd expect from anywhere. Aside from the veggie rolls I couldn't pick them out from a line-up. That might be a defining quality of Japanese-style cuisine in the US, but when I think of truly exceptional Japanese food a place in Vienna, VA comes to mind. My family started going there 20 years ago and the quality of the ingredients and wider variety of non-sushi Japanese dishes immediately sets it apart. My father often favorably compared it to his trips to Japan. The differences are subtle but there. But, I still enjoy Awabi as it is. It's a restaurant I love to tell people about and hope they enjoy it too. read more

The best days for fish are Thursday to Saturday. Crowded on Mondays since many other restaurants are closed on that day. I love it here!! The staff is nice and efficient and they always bring us "miso soup on the house" even if we order it (or other soup) and it's perfect! Their sushi is good and the prices are awesome. They have really good ramen. The only problem I have ever had with them is that the vegetarian ramen starts with a seafood broth... All of their broths are seafood.. I love the katsu and the rice bowls. They offer healthy sides and delicious kimchi at affordable prices. I crave their food and atmosphere all the time! They also have sake, beer and wine available and perfect hot green tea. Also, often times when other restaurants are too crowded, they will have just enough room for you and they always offer us a window seat if it opens up while we're there :) Oh also, the gyoza soup is perfectly delicious. The best gyoza I've ever had! Smoky, meat, rich and delicious in wonderful broth with enoki mushrooms and only $4.95... They have outdoor seating, also. Yum. This place is amazing. I'm into Japanese and Korean food and it's spot on! Everything is soooo good. Good music, good staff. And it's cozy and inviting. The owner is so nice and will talk to you while you sit at the sushi bar. If your into a place that's not pretentious at all and just wants to give you a good, comforting meal with good company, this is your place. Tiny place on the pedestrian mall of Old Town Winchester. The staff is very welcoming and helpful; there were toys and books to entertain our small kids. The sushi (salmon roll) was the best we'd had in a long time, so we can't wait to try more! I tried the Awabi chicken special, which wasn't as good as I hoped, and my husband tried a hot soup, which he enjoyed. The life's bento boxes were on the expensive side ($10). read more
