The yoga classes are exceptional for the area. I attend Carissa's classes every Tuesday and Friday mornings. She seems to have the only yoga within 15 miles that is sacred and meditative. No hecklers and gigglers- you know what I mean. I have lost 35 pounds since the beginning of the year. Though I don't think was was just a few hours a week of yoga, I do beleive that I am grounded during the week and not stressed. I found that when I skip classes, life is a bit more hectic. so, yeah, yoga. This is the best in the area. read more

I have become addicted to the baked goods at this cute tearoom. There is a Polish woman baking there and whatever she makes is just magical. I had a love affair yesterday with 2 scones that were still warm. Two weeks ago she had given me a warm Chantilly? thing that stopped me in my tracks. Don't ask me what it was but I remembered something from my childhood. I have a serious problem. Oh, if you want a tarot reading when you are there, just call ahead. I think they do other spiritual stuff, it is attached to a really cool new age store with lots of pretty crystals. My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun. Really great vibes and great baked sweets. I used a Groupon coupon here but have been interested in Awakening for some time now. And they really did deliver. Jo provided a deep tissue massage, much needed after running the NYC Marathon two days prior. It was much stronger than I expected, and then much better than I expected as well. I felt nice and limber in the hours after, which helped my whole mind flow and everything. So good! The place is also MUCH bigger than it appears from the outside! The only negative is that my appointment from the day before got moved to the next day due to unforseen circumstances, which really sucked (!) but I think the universe wanted that to happen, so I'm at peace with it. read more

Came here for a relaxation massage as a birthday treat. Crystals, rocks, and incense/sage smother the walls. Very serene and tranquil setting, as well as light music playing in the background. Had my first massage with a male masseuse and he was extremely professional as well as knowledgeable. Very beautiful and relaxing ambiance in the spa areas. This review is specifically for the Cafe, As a mother of two growing sons I find Awakening to be a WONDERFUL alternative to the local stores in the area that offer food for all ages. We love to go and sit in the cafe and have a smoothie or sandwich on the way back from sport or the library ( the boys cant do both, they are too full!), The menu board describes the smoothies perfectly ad I think Felix and Lucas have worked their way up and down it many times and still do not tire of the names, ingredients and taste of the very filling portions. The sandwiches are a real hit too whilst NOT hitting my single parent wallet in a big way. Another thing I really like is the water fountain flavored with cucumber, lemon or what ever takes the fancy of the lovely ladies and men behind the counter. It is free and another great way to introduce the boys to alternative selections of drinks made freshly. All in all its a great lace to stop, good toilet, friendly staff and value for money. Awakening is a cosy studio hidden among the shops of the neighborhood. It seems that the entry into the space seems to change in little ways after each visit. The instructor of the Wednesday evening class often begins the class with a short story pulled from a range of sources as a way of framing the class whether it is to push ourselves or to connect the yoga class with our outside lives. I can appreciate these moments as I feel like the instructor is emphasizing not only to push through the physical challenges of yoga but to also see yoga as means for deeper growth. After all, this place is called "Awakening". Yoga is not only physical but mental as well. Otherwise, I would have gone to a gym for just the physical workout. As a beginner yoga practicer, I have found Wednesday Core and Restore class to be friendly and challenging. Each session has a different routine and can sometimes be surprisingly when something new is introduced. The class is open and so I often see a range of students, many who are much more advanced than I am. This is motivational for me to push myself further. Adjustments are often suggested and made as we move through poses. I've been a repeating student as I feel my instructor knows me well enough to adjust and assist me when I need it and give me space as well. With each class, she goes around to the students both new and old to see where they are. She makes an friendly effort to reach out to new students. As they continue to come, she gets to know them better and their specific mods or adjustments. The instructor is thoughtful in her instruction and encourages us to work harder, not just through the yoga movements but being the yoga mentality. It's not just about the yoga we do in class but how we bring it outside with us. read more

I love this little oasis of healing. Came here first for the Reiki Yoga classes because I like yoga and wanted to experience more Reiki in a low-key setting. Very relaxing class, lots of restorative poses and yes, the instructor gives Reiki here and there (sort of like adjustments are given in regular yoga). They have a nice selection of crystals and minerals up front. Every time I go in they seem to have new stones in stock. The real magic here is the healing sessions. I finally splurged and got myself a Reiki healing with Mariola - so glad I did! It was worth every penny. She is warm, wise, and direct and her healing was powerful. Wish I had tried this sooner! Great place! They offer all types of wellness services and classes plus they have an awesome café right inside! I went for a 60 minute massage and it was one of the best I've had. The therapist talked with me first on my problem areas and then really focused on them all during the massage while also completely relaxing and rejuvenating me, I loved it! After I relaxed in the café (free Wi-Fi!) and had a smoothie and a sandwich. Both were delicious and the prices were very reasonable. I have been wanting to check out Awakening for for a message but had a hard time getting an appointment which is a good sign, they are busy. Today, I book a 3pm massage with Jo. I arrived at 2:50pm being a new client I knew I had forms to fill out. At 3pm the receptionist let me know they were running 5-10 minutes late, Ok. At 3:15pm, I asked about how much longer to which the receptionist replied, "I don't know". At 3:25pm I asked if she could find out what's going on...She disappeared into the back. At 3:30pm the receptionist came back upfront along with the owner/therapist. The owner/therapist was not very nice and blurted out "my client was late, so I'm running late sorry" she was dismissive and seemed to not care. I am a small business owner. As soon as I am running late, I let my next client know. I also genuinely try to rectify the situation. I was shocked by the owner's lack of customer service and general uncaring attitude. So I wasted 45 minutes and got no massage. I left with more stress than when I walked into Awakening. You can burn incense all day but that will not hide the smell of bad business. read more

This review is the for spa/ management only. I came to Awakening on Saturday morning for a Reiki treatment. The room was right next to a dance studio - which caused a lot of commotion. During the treatment there was loud hip hop music that periodically turned on for five minutes and then turned off for five minutes. There were also loud conversations just outside the room. Because of the noise, it was impossible to concentrate or relax. When I brought this to the attention of the front desk, they didn't seem to care. Olivia (the woman at the front desk) charged me the full amount for the session and helplessly stated that there was nothing she could do without the owner's consent. I wrote to the owner several days ago about my experience, and still haven't heard back. This is an unorganized and unprofessional environment. They don't deserve your business. read more

I tried Classic Hatha Yoga with Stephen. I've never been to a class in such a traditional style and it was radical! I work with "chronic" low back pain and by doing savasana between each pose I was able to release it completely and go full tilt in wheel and other strong arches. This is unheard of for me and kind of a miracle but I am not the least bit surprised. Miracles happen every day through yoga. Grateful for Stephen's attentive adjustments and graceful, humble presence. I also took Nicole's restorative flow class and she is a lovely intuitive healer who knew just what to do to help me let go. I can feel the healing vibes of this space for sure, I think if you come with an open mind and the intention of simply showing up for yourself you will have the experience you are supposed to have. Awakening is one of my favorite yoga studios around. I come here regularly for the Restorative Yoga and Reiki class - it is truly so relaxing and life-changing. I also try to take the Saturday/Sunday Vinyasa classes when possible--Gina, the instructor, is sooo sweet and nurturing. She really takes the time to learn how your body works and work with you to achieve what you are looking for in class. Not only is Awakening a great place for yoga/pilates classes, but they also have an awesome juice bar/cafe. The menu is a little expensive, but they usually contain exotic ingredients (which i'm sure don't come cheap). read more

I'm currently obsessed with this place. Let me just start off by saying it is an absolutely beautiful space. I purchased a Groupon because I wanted to try it before it became my local spot. Usually when you use a Groupon they treat you like a third class citizen but not awakening! I was able to schedule an appointment with my requested therapist right away and they were SUPER nice! I had a massage with Nico and he was great! I'm a recent graduate & a fellow massage therapist myself. Not only that I have a nice enjoyable relaxing experience, but I definitely learned a couple things from Nico! I def need to go see him again. Also other treatment rooms are huge and very beautiful! The really interesting thing about this place is that they to reiki, chakra cleansing, shamanic healing, soul therapy, flower essence-all the really specific type of energy work that I don't really see in too many places. I'm so excited to go back and try some of their energy based work! There is a wonderful juice bar and café. It's also an apothecary shop. everything they make there is tediously handcrafted, nourishing, cleansing and delicious!! read more

I am back! Since I had a good experience with the cafe, I decided to give the spa portion of Awakening a shot. And I'm very very glad I did. I got the Steam Heaven treatment followed by a 60 minute Swedish massage. The steam treatment is just 20 minutes in a futuristic shower cabin with jets, a handheld shower and colored lights. I'm not sure if I would get it on its own, but as a prelude to a massage... it was perfect. Then I changed into a soft, fuzzy robe and I was ushered into a comfy, cozy massage room. My massage therapist - Maruszka - was like the best, kindest Russian (?) aunt I've never had. She's gentle and attentive, but she knew when to amp up the intensity of the massage without causing any pain. I felt really taken care of and listened to. She was so warm and kind that we hugged afterwards. Seriously - pure positive energy. Priceless. And on top of that, she's a miracle worker. Those pesky knots in my back from various injuries and carrying 10 tons of stuff every day? Gone. That painful, tense lump in my arm from clutching my Wacom pen for 12 hours 5 days a week? Gone, too. I enjoyed my experience here. The staff was professional, punctual and the place was clean. Honestly, I only came here to get a 30 min massage, but it looks like they offer other cool things like juices and yoga classes. I'll have to try these out eventually. Anyway, I had an appointment with Niko and I'm very glad he was available. I mentioned some areas that needed extra attention and were tight, like my calves, and this massage really helped. Not only did the massage feel great, but Niko even stretched me out which was much needed. I think I even got extra time on massage which was totally awesome and appreciated. Finally, the place seemed very clean and the atmosphere was lovely. This probably seems like a strange thing to comment on, but the bathrooms are beautiful. To me, this is a big deal because a lot of NY bathrooms are totally disgusting, but this one was well decorated and clean. As a California vegan that regularly visits Brooklyn it was nice to find a place that has a bit of a hippy vibe and serves really delicious smoothies. There's also free wi-fi and abundant seating to enjoy while you sip. The teas are really nice, especially on ice. I can't speak highly enough of the staff, as they are very, very friendly. The cafe apparently opens at 11am, rather than the time posted here (10am), but the woman at the front desk let me in, made me a hot tea, and let me sit in the back and work while they were prepping the store to open. They'll have my loyalty for every trip to Brooklyn because of that. If you're in the mood for a caffeinated chocolate smoothie, go for the Cocoamocha. It's... ridiculous. I have been coming to Awakening for almost a year and it is an amazing space. It's a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with teachers and staff that are extremely friendly and kind. Awakening provides a variety of yoga classes, but what makes this space unique is the fusion of reiki and yoga in their restorative classes. The "Reiki Restorative Yoga" class with Nicole has become an absolute favorite of mine. This soothing class is the perfect way to unwind at the end of the day and Nicole does a fantastic job at creating a soft and calming environment. Her classes are simply wonderful, as she is an intuitive healer whose kindness and positivity radiate through the class. I also really enjoy their "Flow & Restore" classes offered at this studio. These classes provide a perfect blend of vinyasa to get the energy flowing, followed by a series of relaxing restorative postures, leaving you feeling calm and clear. read more

Awakening NY is a precious place for healing in the middle of NY! The first time I went there it was because of a workshop that was held in one of the spacious rooms there. As I walked through the crystal shop of the center, I sensed this lovely positive energy all around me, as if the shop and the crystals, everything, was taken care of with plenty of love. That memory of love and safety of that place stuck with me until some time later when I was going through some challenges in life and decided to have some energy work done on me. That's when I met Mariola for the first time -- for my first chakra cleanse in my life. What can I say? She is just an angel with healing gifts.. the session with her felt absolutely incredible and something needing to shift, did shift within me, with ease and with her help, changing my perspective on life in a profound way. Her loving care and energy rebalancing went very deep and I'm still immensely grateful for having found her. This experience with her has opened my eyes in many ways, and never would have I thought that later on I would have booked a "remote" session, my first ever, with her.. I was always soooo skeptical about such a thing! But I did, because I needed some support, I was not in the States, and I needed Mariola's healing touch on me again. The day before the session though I suddenly started feeling better, so when the session came about, I felt a bit embarrassed because a big chunk of what I was going through, had already lifted up, out of the blue. When I said that, Mariola lovingly laughed and said to me "my dear, of course it feels lifted, I was already working on you!" And that was just the beginning of my first remote session.. :) What I can say is, with all my honest heart, Awakening NY is a special place for healing, love and light. After passing this place on a regular basis for several years, I finally had some time to go in yesterday. My first thought was "why haven't I come here sooner!". I absolutely LOVED this place! They are pretty reasonably priced and have a large selection of crystals, as well as jewelry, signing bowls and many other wonderful treasures!! I was so overwhelmed, but in a really good way. When you buy crystals, they offer you a paper which explains the meaning and intended use for each crystal. They even throw in some lovely smelling sage for you to burn! Before this, I had gone to Namaste Bookshop on 14th Street which is nice but WAY overcrowded. Awakening is not like that at all, which is relaxing. I left the store feeling calm and a little bit happier! I will definitely be coming back here! read more

This place is a breath of fresh air in the neighborhood. The yoga studio is gorgeous, huge, and complete with great clean mats and equipment and instructors who lead good classes with individual attention. What really has me excited is the cafe - which has finally brought incredible fresh and healthy food to this area. Being able to stop in and get a green smoothie like the Green Goddess which has kale, fresh coconut milk, toasted walnuts, pineapple, grapes and agave - on the way to the train in the mornin is amazing. The smoothies are basically meal replacements and priced really reasonably. Everytime I stop by there is always some tasty special like watermelon basil aqua fresca or roasted beet quinoa salad. They just started a new juice cleanse and being able to be specific and know exactly where your ingredients come from for a cleanse is really appealing. I do yoga here and it's great! The teacher is awesome and I definitely feel like I've worked out afterwards. Only two things are small drawbacks: 1. all the mats are stacked on top of each other and I feel like don't get cleaned - at least not after every class. One or two people sprayed theirs down but the vast majority just got put back, which is a little unappealing. 2. There's a REALLY loud class above our yoga studio and it can get really distracting. I wish they'd schedule the two at different times so we didn't have to hear people running around above us. Aside from that, it's great! I have a 10 pass card and I definitely look forward to going each week. The smoothie I had from the cafe was so good (mighty aphrodite?) and I keep meaning to try the food. I just completed my first juice cleanse at Awakening, and I can't believe I did it! It was a three day juice cleanse, and at the beginning of everyday they provided me 6 freshly-squeezed organic juices that were my 'meals' for the entire time. I felt great and was barely hungry any of the time. They also provided a class prior to the cleanse to get us ready for what was to come. And it was only $150 for the entire program. Beautiful space, but the class I took was really disappointing. I took the yoga with sound class and was bummed that it didn't feel like a work out nor was it relaxing or spiritually enriching. Fortunately, we were a tiny group but unfortunately, we got no personal attention or relevant modification recommendations even though we all had significantly different needs/challenges. The instructor talked with her eyes closed for most of it and seemed to act like we weren't really there. I bought a class pack because there was a sale and I am crossing my fingers that their other teachers will be more friendly, eager to teach, and be able to facilitate an enjoyable and physically challenging class with level appropriate modifications. read more

Went to the cafe and was blown away. The perfect, most relaxing get-away for an hour. The lady serving was so welcoming and let us sample everything before deciding what we were getting for lunch. Their food is so delicious and you can tell you're treating your body so well by putting it in you. They give you great portions and it's not expensive at all. $7 for a lunch combo! About to go up and get one of their juices!!! Can't wait to try their massage/yoga studio someday too. It's all connected. I'm so glad that Awakening is in the neighborhood. I took my first Iyengar yoga class with Jennifer and enjoyed it. The yoga space is gorgeous and brand new. They have all new yoga gear. They also offer massages and facials and other spa treatments. I took advantage of an opening special that they were running and bought a 10-class card for $96. Score! While I didn't eat anything while I was there, I checked out the cafe area and the food looked delicious. Priced about right. Half of a ginormous wrap was $4, a mini-salad $4. They even had chia seed pudding, which I've never heard of before. Juices, smoothies, etc., etc. I'll definitely be returning for the yoga and the food! read more

I unfortunately can't say that I loved the class I took here. One of my biggest annoyances with yoga studios is when a class description doesn't actually match the class. In this case, Core & Restore was supposed to begin with a core-based vinyasa flow and transition into a restorative practice. We started off with a brief meditation, which was fine. But then the instructor started talking about social media posts and motherhood... and didn't stop talking about these topics for over ten minutes. I love when an instructor personalizes a class, but this went on for way too long, and the topics didn't seem appropriate for a yoga class. Motherhood is (a) a sensitive topic for some and (b) not broadly relatable, unless you're in a post-natal class. A couple brief thoughts on motherhood wouldn't have necessarily bothered me, but sitting through a ten minute lecture felt really weird to me. And the social media stuff was so inappropriate. I come to yoga class to get away from that! Please do not talk at length about WhatsApp and Facebook during the practice! The class itself felt like it barely had any restorative elements. The only restorative poses we did were a spinal twist and a supported bridge, both of which are common in a regular vinyasa class. When I come to a restorative class, I'm looking for something more. The teacher did not even offer modifications/suggestions of how to go deeper. And I didn't even receive a single adjustment, so I never felt like I could fully surrender into the poses. This part of class seemed to only last around 10 minutes. I was really relying on the restorative segment, because the vinyasa flow was very disappointing. At the very beginning of the class, the instructor asked if anyone was new to yoga. No one in the room was. She proceeded to lead us through a total beginner's sequence. We were never given the option to do a chaturanga - it was knees/chest/chin every single time. Child's pose happened every five poses or so. It was SO beginner that we couldn't even step back from a low lunge into downward dog. We had to go through a tabletop every time. I was expecting a fiery flow that worked my core & got me ready for the restorative portion of class. There was no fire. This would have been okay for an absolute beginner, but it wasn't geared towards the level of the actual students at all. There are so many ways to work the core in a yoga class, and we did essentially none of them. If you're going to offer a beginner's class, that's great, but I wouldn't sign up for it, because that's not what I'm looking for in my practice. By calling it "Core & Restore" instead of what it actually is, it fooled me into paying for an experience that didn't match the class description. There was no core work, and there weren't any true restorative postures. The class also went 15 minutes later than the schedule said, which could have been avoided if the instructor had skipped the long social media & motherhood lecture at the start of class. The space is pretty, and the store at the front looked cool, but I need a studio where I can trust that the class experience will match the description and not waste my time. read more

I'm no yogi but I came for a restorative yoga class with Yael and was very pleased. I left so relaxed. I hadn't done yoga in forever and have an injury from lots of cardio, so I was kinda anxious, but she was really mindful and put me at ease. She used essential oils also that smelled so good. The studio itself was also gorgeous and prices are totally reasonable. Definitely a good stretch! And I know I'm getting a great nights sleep :) I'll be back here! read more

Went to Power Yoga today with Mantas. Great facility and instructor. He made sure everyone was comfortable and took us on a relaxing, zenful journey. The class was intimate and had great energy. I came out feeling very wonderful. Awakening NY offers lots of other types of classes, which I haven't tried but it looks like they cover a lot of different areas.
