I have been going to Axel since it opened over 30 years ago.it has since then gone they at least 3 owners. It is now owned by Caroline who is amazing, friendly and does an amazing job. She is the only one who cuts my hair. I have tried the other girls and although a great job, it's just not perfect. Now let me tell you this. All of the stylist ALWAYS have their chairs full. I think it's just a personal preference of who to stick with. You can always try to walk in but I strongly suggest you make an appointment. read more

I've been living in Glendale for a couple of years but had been going to the city or Long Island for hair cuts. The other day I felt an overwhelming need to get bangs and change my look, and Axel was able to see me the next day. I appreciated the accommodation on such short notice! It was just two people working when I arrived, and a customer leaving, everyone wore masks the whole time and it was very clean. I even had my hair washed with my mask on which was definitely an experience, lol. The stylist who did my hair was clearly very experienced and gave me exactly the look I wanted while making sure it was the right look for me and wouldn't be too high maintenance. Avoid this place! I knew I should have left - any salon that's not busy on a Saturday morning should be avoided. Told Simona I wanted her to curl my long straight hair and tease it a bit. Well, she used a curling iron for a half hour, didn't tease it all all, and charged me $50! My curls are limp and my hair does not look curly. The attention and hair done by Liliana & Daniela was phenomenal! I cant thank her enough for making my hair look so healthy & beautiful. Liliana also works fast, she had me for four hours and i saw her take care of 5 clients and they were all happy with the results. They definitely love what they do, and she was even willing to take me for 5pm after work! My hair was dark and had greys and very weak. The transition Liliana did was highlights, she lighted it up and my hair looks really healthy, even with the blonde. The price was fair, not after the money. I will return and recommend anyone. Mandatory 1 star status... Made an appointment with Carolin after reading the great reviews..BIG MISTAKE!! I now have to strip my hair because of the color she applied. I told her I didn't want dark color and the highlights she applied that were supposed to "subtly" enhance the color were a mess. A brassy uneven mess. And my trim!! I consulted with Liliana about color correction and cut from a different hair stylist ( logistically I was not able to go back to have it fixed by him). I was very nervous (borderline neurotic) about having it fixed, and Liliana listened to me, advised me, and at the ultimately fixed my hair( color and cut). If I could give this place half a star I would. I've never been treated so rudely by a salon staff in my life. Lets start here. Last thursday I walked into the salon and asked when the next available appointment for a wash cut and blow dry was and they proceeded to book me an appointment for tuesday (today) at 4:30. Jump to today, I was very excited for my haircut, walked imto the salon after work ready to relax and not a single worker acknowledged my presence (much like other reviewers have stated). Figuring since there was only one stylist and receptionist I didnt bother them because they seemed busy. Once a customer left, there was a woman getting a style done, and only me. Finally the receptionist asks what i'm here for, so I tell her, she looks through her book, says nothings there, whats my name, flips through a few more pages, rudely whispers to the stylist. At the same time another extremely bitchy customer walks in and thrusts herself at the counter (mind you I have been here for 20 minutes). This girl tells them she has an appointment at 430. The same time as mine. The two women whisper to each other, and then say who can wait longer. Logically thinking, most would assume, the girl who just walked in. Not so. They take this brand new girl and start washing her hair leaving me to sit and wait longer. I was so infuriated I walked out without saying a word. I would much rather spend my money elsewhere. I've been going to Axel Hair Design for a long time and have always highly recommended them. I made some prominent referrals considering friends now go there and so do their family members. They've always been very reasonably priced and all of the stylists do a great job (for cuts; I've never gotten color done). I have gotten awesome and drastic haircuts (long hair to a bob) and was charged $35-40. I recently came for a TRIM and was charged $50! I was so shocked; thankful I brought enough cash but didn't have enough on me to tip. The last time I was there for a haircut was in late September where I cut off a considerable length for a new look- charged $45. I feel it's unfair to charge such drastic increase in price for a TRIM (shoulder length hair was no longer at my shoulder and cut about an inch!) not sure if this is an overall change in how pricing is now. I was going there for so long because of how reasonable they charged for trims and haircuts. With that said, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to drive out there again to pay so much. read more

When visiting a place of business which provides a service to you (especially as personal as fixing your hair) you would think this place would step up to the plate and at least show you a proper greeting and common courtesy. I made an appointment to this salon a few months ago and not only was I not greeted as I stepped in the door, I wasn't even given any eye contact. I had to announce myself that I was there for an appointment. One woman asked me what I was there for (again not even looking at me) and I informed her just for a blow out (which I had stated over the phone when I made my appointment). She pointed to a stylist putting rollers in another older woman's hair and said she would be doing my hair but the stylist didn't even acknowledged me. I tried to be patient and sat down for ten mins and no one offered to wash my hair or anything to drink. The salon was empty and there were other stylist just wandering around. I had my two daughters with me and neither was addressed either, (and I have a 4 month old baby girl, so tell me who doesn't smile at a baby)? My point is that the atmosphere wasn't friendly'. After 15 mins sitting patiently I stood up got my girls together and left without a word. I had parked right in front so as I put the girls in my car, a lady I hadn't even seen in the salon came out (maybe an owner I don't know) asked me if I was going to do my hair. (Now someone sees me! Gasp! What a surprise)! I shook my head but didn't look at her since it took me leaving to be acknowledged. I hopped in my car and left! Never EVER again. I only considered this place cause it's not too far in from where I reside. I rather drive a further distance to do my hair to get better service. read more

Absolutely loved the women of Axel ! Carolin was the sweetest most patient stylist I could ever ask for. I wanted to dye my hair out of black and knew it'd be a lot of work especially when dealing with bleach. She truly had the patience to bleach every strand and re-dye along with adding fabulous layers and making me feel more beautiful than ever before! The service here is entirely unprofessional. I called for an evening hair appointment during the week with Simona and she explained that her last appointment was at 3 and she didn't want to wait around until 6:30. So I scheduled a Friday appointment instead, as I had an important event to go to and she clearly stated we were set. I then received a call from the front desk two hours before my appointment that she had to cancel due to an "event". I am extremely disappointed in the service and even more angry that she canceled in such short notice. I now cannot fit into any other salons schedule due to such short notice. How can a business stay afloat when you have employees that leave when they want or cancel when they have scheduled appointments after personally speaking with them over the phone? Your business is now losing money and a large tip due to poor scheduling and incompetent employees. I will never schedule an appointment at Axel again and would recommend others to reconsider their appointments if you have an important event the day of. I will take my money elsewhere. read more

Axel is great local salon and with friendly service. They use a new oil based hair color (Redken) that does not damage my hair. Leaves is shiny and silky afterwards. I recommend it if you color your hair often. Staff is friendly and personable. Affordable prices. read more
