Great little store! And just like any other store you'll find some great prices and some high prices. We found quite a few things we haven't been able to find anywhere else locally, like vegan Worcestershire. Hooray! You'll find lots of seeds, nuts and flours bagged in-house. Plus, so many options and varieties (of foods we've been desperate for since moving here) to choose from that you, sadly, won't find in any other store here in Maine. Oh, we also splurged on some locally made sourdough bread and a couple gluten-free vegan cupcakes. So they weren't cheap.. so what? They were both surprisingly delicious for not being made fresh at our home! It's true, you usually get what you pay for and some things are just more expensive because they're made with more expensive ingredients. They're worth a splurge sometimes! read more

Be careful going here, I bought hummus that was so sour and clearly bad and they wouldn't let me return it when it was clearly horrible. I went there on several occasions to obtain four different products, which they usually carry, and were out of. It is my opinion, to which I am entitled, the proprietor of this business is inept, incompetent and incapable of running a business. In the future, I am going to save myself the aggravation involved in driving there to say nothing of product availability, supply-chain issues being what they are, and that excuse has been very convenient ever since the Pandemic, and I am going to have a less hectic drive and travel to Morning Glory in Brunswick. It might be further, but the aggravation and frustration is considerably less, and I might actually find what I'm looking for. read more

I used to love Axis, but every time I've been in the past couple of years the staff here has been so rude. I'm not in the Lewiston/Auburn much, but when I am I go out of my way to specifically stop at Axis because they always seem to have a few things that other natural and organic grocers don't (recently I was able to get Yves Veggie Cuisine vegan pepperoni, ham, and salami -- three things I haven't seen in a verrrrrrrrrry long time in Greater Portland). But this latest trip will probably be my last... When I went to cash out the woman at the register turned away from me, heavy sighed, turned back around, then beckoned me forward with her hand. The *only* thing she said to me - with absolute disgust - was, "You didn't bring your own bag?!" When I said no, she literally scooped up all of my items with her forearms and dumped them into a brown paper bag that was too small for all of my items (smashed baked goods? burst open chip bags? you bet!). After I cashed out, the woman walked away from the register entirely. So I leaned over, grabbed my overflowing brown paper bag, looked around to see if I was all set, then left. It was one of the strangest, rudest experiences I've had in a long time. Maybe this person was just having a *really* bad day, but I can't remember the last time an employee was friendly here. It's too bad, because Axis is offering so much good stuff and supporting local in so many amazing ways, but... yeah, I don't think there's a reason to come out of my way to visit here anymore. read more

My wife bought 2 packs of frozen chicken legs and chicken wings. We thawed them out and then went to cook them and both of the packs of chicken were rancid. My wife called the store to notify them of the spoiled meat and was told to, Bring it in." She explained that we lived 15 miles away and could not make the trip back in to prove the meat is rancid. No accommodation given by the clerk. There was also no question as to which frozen product was rancid so they may prevent this from happening to someone else. My wife volunteered the information and the response was, "I'll let them know in the back." There was no genuine care or concern about selling spoiled meat for a family to eat and definitely no concern for the inconvenience to the customer. read more

What a nice little fan.... I talked to the cashier for a bit and she mentioned that it had been in the area for over 20 years but had just moved to that location recently. It had a great selection of vitamins/herbal remedies/homeopathic treatments, some nice veggies, a vast assortment of frozen foods, and good snacks. I overheard the cashier helping a woman pick out a supplement and everyone seemed so pleasant. A nice little gem in Auburn, for sure. read more

I have lived in the Auburn-Lewiston area for over over twelve years. I have gone to Axis about ten times a year. This is a decent place to get your all natural products (albeit one of the only places) if you don't mind quirky staff who lack customer service skills. I think this store takes customer service for granted. I have numerous family, not to mention co-workers shop here. My co-workers and I have a "crazy Axis Foods story" every week at work. Yup. Every week. Yes, the new store is lovely. There is a lot more product. Isles are organized well. Lewiston-Auburn doesn't have a fully natural large sized grocery store in our area, so when the newer and larger store opened, I was SO excited. I loved my first shopping experience there. I literally changed my budget around in order to start doing ALL my grocery shopping at Axis every week. It cost me significantly more ($40/wk) a week to do this. I loved the products and I was willing to spend more in order to support a local business and up my intake of organic products. Things went downhill... and I found it annoying enough that after shopping there for a couple of months, I called it quits. They lost my $140 in cash every week because of their customer service issues. And it honestly feels like they don't care. Here are my experiences: A grocery store clerk did not know the prices of a a produce item on the conveyor belt. He asked me to go back and check the prices for him. So I did. Maybe he was new and unfamiliar with customer service and all that. Maybe it's the family-feel of the store. This happened again the next week. Only this time, it was two** produce items. Asked me to check the produce isle for him and stupidly I did. Next, my entire cart of groceries, raw milk and produce were stuffed into two paper bags by the bagger... filled to the brim and ready to break. Next time around, my bags were stuffed to the brim AGAIN. I could barely carry them and was worried the bottoms would drop out. When I got home, I sat the uber-heavy bags down on my door step. I heard a crack. Yup. The $6 raw milk bottle had broken. I lost a lot of produce, which was covered in milk, my egg carton was soaked, items like chips, etc. in paper bags were lost. I immediately called the store. I told them, nicely, what happened, and that the bags are always overstuffed. I asked if I could come back, show them the bottle, and get a replacement. The clerk stumbled, and said that she hated when that happened - that it happened to her all the time. Then she said that MAYBE I could bring the bottle back in and they would give me a buck or two on the recycling cost. Eh? I came right out and asked again if I could have a new bottle of milk. For free. She said I should come back to the store that night. It was 8pm, I said that wouldn't work, I was already late making dinner and could I come the next day. She said she was worried because the other employees would not know the situation... really?? She finally said, "Oh, I know! I will put it on a post it note!" So she did, and I went in the next day and got my milk. No one gave me a hard time, but when I was leaving the store, the employee yelled out to the cashier (in front of a long LINE of other customers) : "This is the lady with the broken milk bottle - She is not stealing it, OK!" Oh well. On another visit, I noticed the egg farmer was dropping off eggs. After he left, I checked the dairy freezer and still no eggs... the employee who had helped him with the drop off was stocking granola. I came over and asked the employee if there were any eggs, because the freezer case was empty. He led me to the kitchen out back told me to grab what I wanted. Should a customer be brought to the kitchen area out back? Not so sure. I took my eggs. The employee went back to stocking granola while the eggs sat there. I have also overheard store employees bad mouthing customers while standing right in the vicinity of other customers. A lot of the store management seems inconvenienced by customers. Someone I know asked when they would have something in stock again. When they said it'd be back the next week, she went in to check. She asked, they said they were still waiting. She went again the following week. Asked again - this time they said that the item was "somewhere" in a stack of boxes out back. That she should come back AGAIN. Really? You're not going to go look? She came back, and they STILL had not unpacked the boxes. I mean seriously... But hey, make your own decision on this place. It had potential but I have to believe at some point this customer service thing will shoot them in the foot if they don't start training their staff. read more

This place doesn't have the selection of Whole Foods and it doesn't have the low prices of Trader Joes, but it's the only "organic"/natural food store in the Lewiston-Auburn area. So, if you don't want to/can't make it down to Portland, this is a nice alternative. I'm surprised by the other reviews re: customer service. I've always found the workers to be fine -- they're definitely on the quirky side, but they were polite and efficient every time I've been there. I do love the cheese selection here. read more

Certainly not even remotely comparable to Whole Foods or Trader Joes. This place reminds me of Natural food markets before they became mainstream. It is small, with an equally modest assortment of locally grown produce, meats, and cheeses a long the way. If you should be in the Lewiston/Auburn area, this is probably your best bet if not your only source for asian ingredients such as miso. (However expect to pay a price that will make your eyes bug out, and oddly, none of it is in the refrigerated section) They do have a large assortment of bulk herbs, both culinary and medicinal, which you can buy loose in little plastic baggies. This is also the only place I have seen that carries a fair variety of yogurt cultures, if you're in to making your own yogurts or kefir. (again, the price is staggering) Certainly not a place that the average resident of Lewiston could afford to make regular grocery trips to, but if you're in the neighborhood and just can't find that special ingredient at the big chain grocery stores, give Axis a try. read more

The staff is disrespectful. I will not shop in this store anymore. I was discriminated against because of deformities in my nasal passages, which impact my breathing (nothing that is noticeable to people, nothing that creates any issues for anyone; I simply can't get a strong air supply through them). There have been numerous experiences with rude and unhelpful employees at other times that I have been allowed in the store. I wrote many of those experiences off until my latest visit. read more

Axis Natural Foods just moved down the street to 120 Center St. from their prior location of 250 Center St in Auburn, ME. They are in the building that used to house the Movie Gallery before they went out of business earlier this year. The new building is much more spacious then the old. Due to the increase in sq. footage they have many more products. I am so excited that I will be able to do more of my natural health shopping much closer to home then in the past. With the price of gas this is very good news to me! I have always been impressed with the amount of knowledge the employees have about their products and natural health in general. If I ask a question and the employee does not know they confer with other knowledgeable employees and give me an answer before I leave the store. At the new location I was impressed to see the number of bulk items, for example; 5 lb bag of rolled oats. I loathe shopping so when I can buy larger quantities resulting in less trips I'm a very happy customer! I saw a kitchen in the back of the new store. I'm not sure if this means they will have a "sandwich shop" coming in the future or if it's just where they will be doing their prepping. I will update this review when I know for sure. Axis Natural Foods also provides special order service. If they do not have an item you are looking for they will special order it for you and let you know when it arrives for your pick-up. I simply love this place and their new location. Since this is really the only place around for natural food and supplies, we are fortunate that they have such a wide variety and their staff is so knowledgeable. Since moving to the new location, they have expanded their fresh local dairy and meat selection, as well as produce. The prices on the herbs can't be beat as well. read more

Axis Natural Foods is a shocker. It's a shocker because you would never expect this level of a natural food-store any where in Maine. They must have at least 8 - 10 full length isles. It's new location now allows you to do a complete grocery list without having to hit up the grocery store. They carry a lot of products, and have a lot of the type of things you would assume that you would need to order from online retailers. The service is also great, they will walk with you to locate products and even give you some decent unbiased advice. Which to me is important in a place where you are less familiar with the products. read more

Axis is just OK, but you pretty much need to shop here for certain ingredients, as the "natural" sections at the mainstream grocery stores in town are pretty pathetic. Axis has a pretty good selection and the store is kept up pretty well. The prices can seem high at times, but since they're the only game in town for a lot of stuff it's tough to really make a fair price comparison. The biggest frustration with shopping here is that if they're out of something that you want to get, they're probably going to be out of it for a month. read more

Even though the traditional grocery stores are slowly expanding their selection of "natural" and "organic" options, I find myself at Axis once or twice a month because there are just some ingredients you won't find at Hannaford's or Shaw's. As a specialty grocery it's not bad. Not nearly as large as a Whole Foods, but it serves its purpose. read more
