Place is tight so be careful with your cart coming around corners! Not a huge produce section but enough to get by. They had a decent amount of gf foods. We were able to get what we needed for a few days worth of breakfast on vacation as well as some gf snacks. read more

I like Royal River -- it feels like I'm entering some great big mountain lodge or cabin near a lake that just happens to be filled with fresh produce, locally crafted goods, and an abundance of natural foods and health items. Regarding the customer service: I've had some really weird interactions here (one cashier tried to make me feel badly for having colored hair and told me how I was contributing to the destruction of the environment [my hair dye is actually vegan, non-toxic, and paraben free]), I've also had some really helpful interactions here when I had questions about the aromatherapy and Ayurvedic properties in something. So, in my experience, it's been difficult to read the overall vibe of the people who work here. I wouldn't go out of my way to drive here from Portland for anything in particular, however recently a product that I really loved at Whole Foods suddenly disappeared off the shelves. Every employee I asked about it said they had "never heard of it before" (side note: I've been buying this product every week for three or four years now). So I put in an order for a case of it; a week later Whole Foods called me back to say that this item was no longer being manufactured. Enter Royal River. Knowing they also carry this particular product (the only place I recall seeing it at recently) I call and put in a special order. Two days later they call me back saying my case is available for pick up (and I get a 10% discount for buying a whole case too!). I don't know if this product will or won't be around in the future, but I gotta give a virtual high five to RRNF for coming through on this one! read more

We stopped by yesterday for soup on the way home as well as to do a little shopping.The mushroom broccoli soup looked like a thick and gritty gravy and the other soup didn't appeal to us, so we passed on lunch. Their pricing is no longer relatively competitive. It's a given that an indie shop is going to be a bit pricier, and I've never had any issues with that. However, everything we wanted to buy was at least $1 or $2 more than other competition in greater Portland. I really want to support small businesses, especially this one since I'm a customer since the 1990s, but the prices are becoming too high in relation to other options. They still offer some unique produce I haven't seen elsewhere and continue to have a good selection, so I will still make a point to stop here when in Freeport. I just may not buy as much. read more

The produce (onions, Brussels sprouts, and root vegetables) not infrequently are rotten inside when you get home and cut them open. The bagged lettuce similarly has been wet inside and slimy the next day. They don't seem really to care. They do have good stuff, but there are other places where you don't have to trash what you just boughtt. read more

Expect to pay a King's Ransom at this Royal store. I understand Freeport, ME is a bustling area, but the prices are flat-out ridiculous on most items. There are many other competitors with an expansive selection for much less. An unnamed large grocery store chain's organic food prices are better than Royal River's (same brand organic strawberries are $1 less per pint as of this writing). It would be worth driving elsewhere if you have a large number of items on your shopping list, as the gouged prices at Royal will add up to more than the cost of gas, even if you're driving one of those gas guzzling tanks. read more

WOW, I love this store. I shop here occasionally and I always find what I am looking for at decent prices for a health food store. One fantastic experience I had was after I travelled a few months ago., the airline lost my luggage, I went here to get some trial size cosmetics and shampoos etc. Susan, I think, found me samples, she GAVE THEM to me. I was wanting to buy a travel kit to tie me over till my luggage was found. But Susan gave me lovely samples for free and it felt good to feel beautiful right then. I love this store. As soon as you walk through the front doors: Boom! Beautiful, voluminous fresh organic produce . That sets the tone for everything. Lots of selection, great staff

Be prepared to part with some dollars if you shop here. I spent $20 on a one pound ribeye steak that had the texture of rubber bands. Yes, $20. The organic cherry tomatoes I bought (packaged in plastic from some farm that exists somewhere in the USA) were all wrinkled. Silly me for not checking them. Flavor? None. Really, none. I went to this store to buy the ingredients to make a fairly basic steak salad for my family of 4. The only item I bought that wasn't part of the salad was a package of dried apricots. Also, I bought a bottle of red wine vinegar which will remain in our kitchen beyond this unfortunate dinner ($5). I spent $55. For a weeknight salad and a bag of apricots. I'm giving 2 stars because the staff were pleasant enough, though they're probably not sharing in the profits... This is the most expensive natural food store I have ever shopped at. Feeling ripped off, very disappointed here. read more

At one time, I would have given this place 5 stars, with no hesitation, but lately, it's just seemed "off". Not awful, just off. The store is kind of grungy, and the staff seems to be turning over a lot more than it used to- not a great sign. I love the supplements and bodycare department; a great selection, and highly knowledgeable staff, and will continue to come here for that stuff. The main grocery section is pretty good, with a fair number of local brands at not-outrageotus prices; however, it's not fun shopping there when the staff is stocking the shelves, as the aisles are extremely hard to maneuver through. The bulk section looks great, at first glance. Unfortunately, they are chronically out of stock on a lot of items, and it always looks a bit neglected and dusty. They do have a decent selection of basics like grains and flours, though. The produce section is really big for a store of this size. I've been told they get their main order for the week on Fridays, so check it out on Saturday morning when it's all been cleaned up and put out for sale for the best selection. Most of the produce people are nice, and will happily take time to tell you how to prepare different veggies and fruits, how to pick the ripest watermelon, etc. The older guy who works during the week is not really a people person, though; when I asked him which apples were best for making pies, he snapped at me, "Lady, if you don't know how to cook, ask your husband to buy you a cookbook" and then stomped away. Wow. The deli is really nice. They have a selection of pre-made sandwiches and sushi in the big case, and cold drinks and coffee. They have hot soup, usually two or three kinds every day. It's really, really good soup. Also, yummy homemade muffins with silly names and crazy flavor combinations. There's a sunny little seating area if you want to enjoy lunch right there, with free wi-fi; it's nice. I don't want to sound as though I hate Royal River, because I don't. I just don't like what I've been seeing lately, and I really hope they get their act together soon. read more

This is a great natural foods store. We bought some chicken salad, egg salad, greens, and various chips (raw cabbage chips, seaweed snacks, etc), and sparkling water. It's great that it is on the same strip as many cheap hotels; you can stock up on healthy food and snacks to store in your hotel room. I'm very pleased with Royal River Natural Foods. Since they upgraded their Point of Service cash registers and added a customer loyalty card, there have been zero mistakes when I pay for my items. Before this system, about 25% of the time, I needed to get a supervisor involved with a correction. I especially enjoy their made daily sandwiches; look for them in the cooler next to the registers. I stopped in on a Saturday night to pick up some snacks for hiking, and was pleasantly surprised with the large selection of fresh, organic produce, bulk grains, nuts, and beans, and prepared foods. it doesn't look too big from the outside, but they have just about everything you would need to eat a nice healthy well balanced diet plus a decent wine and beer department. i wouldnt call it just a healthfood store - they offer a lot more here with a nice little seating area and some prepare foods. lots of nice looking baked goods and the staff has always been friendly and helpful. read more

Great selection, great service! I drive 15 minutes out of my way, past other health food stores to get there.

Good selection, and the place always smells terrific, but today I was dismayed to learn from a clerk that I would need to behave differently since I live on a budget and "most of our customers don't have to worry about that sort of thing." I'd expressed astonishment at a $9 jar of lard, which I needed to bake a pie crust for my neighbor. The clerk couldn't stop laughing, even after I told him I didn't find my economic circumstances all that funny. Finally I just left, asking the clerk to void my transaction. Surprise -- according to my bank record, it didn't happen. Guess most customers just don't care about an extra few $ of charge. read more

This a great market for natural foods. They have a good selection of produce, grocery items, and beauty supplies. I love shopping here because it's easy to get in and out of and I know that I will be able to find items that the larger stores in town might not have. Plus, it's more convenient for me than driving to the Whole Foods in Portland. Aside from staple items for vegetarian and vegans, I believe that they sell meat and fish as well. I'm a big fan of the living nutz products and they have a large selection of these, including my personal faves-mayan chili pistachios! They also have a decent selection of prepared food items including soups, sandwiches, and sushi which makes it a great place to pick up an easy lunch. I definitely recommend checking this market out the next time you are in Freeport-it's a great local spot. read more
