Pro tip - avoid the weekends and come here during the week because you won't need to wait 90 minutes. It's a small place with limited seating so expect weekend waits. We split the birria bowl with the pancakes on the side. Portion was big enough to share between two people if you aren't a big eater. The pancakes looked like they were made of wheat flour but it was actually the cinnamon they add to the batter. The plating was incredible with homemade whipped cream with an edible flower on the top. The birria bowl was full of flavorful tender beef which paired really well with the eggs. They have really unique upscale combinations of Mexican almost fusion food so I need to explore the menu more next time but those pancakes will always be a staple every meal.
Such a fun brunch spot in Bay View! Was luckily able to get a table on the Yelp waitlist for a group of 4 on a busy Sunday morning. The yelp wait list was super accurate on timing & allowed our crew to plan ahead. We started our day with lattes which were the perfect level of sweetness & glad that they had dairy free milk options. The menu was fun with multiple traditional breakfast foods with a twist. I had the breakfast tacos which were flavorful & filling. My friend is a vegetarian & was excited about the vegetarian Benedict. We got to try both the French toast & pancakes which were both to die for & enough food to go around the whole table. My favorite thing may have been the potatoes as they were both crispy & well seasoned, the perfect match up. Our waitress was so nice & checked in on us multiple times. Will definitely be back!!
First time visiting this cafe and definitely not the last time! Service was extremely great! The staff was super nice since the start. The owner came over to our table after he noticed my dad wearing a colombia soccer jersey, just to make small talk, and it was honestly super sweet and refreshing to see. The food was delicious! I had the chilaquiles verde with chorizo, and had a black iced coffee. The location is small, but even though every table is occupied, it doesn't seem hectic or overwhelming. Will definitely come back to this business! and I live in chicago, so it's definitely worth it.
We brought our family to Axolotl Café for brunch while they were visiting from out of town, and once again, this place did not disappoint! We ordered the chicken and waffles, homemade horchata, and another breakfast entrée. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and served hot. The homemade horchata was especially deliciou it's clear they put a lot of care into the quality of their food and drinks. We went on a weekday around 11 a.m. and were able to beat the brunch rush, so there was little to no wait. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and attentive, and our food came out quickly. This has become one of our favorite brunch spots because the food and service are consistently excellent every time we visit. If you're looking for a great breakfast or brunch spot with fresh, homemade flavors and outstanding service, I highly recommend Axolotl Café. We'll definitely be back!
Axolotl was like being thrown into Oaxaca City in Mexico, trendy, full of flavor, and traditional. I went on a Tuesday for brunch, I ordered the birria omelet and was able to get a side of horchata pancakes for a $3 up charge (with it). Both were phenomenal! The coffee and drinks are served in talavera pottery- which brings on the whimsy! The plating and presentation was delicate and pretty. Wish I would have taken more photos! The phone def didn't eat first haha
Simple. Worth the wait!! This place is a cultural taste bud journey! Wow! Insider secret is to use to wait-list feature on Yelp (go yelp!) and once you're seated, you're in for an experience. We ordered the birria tacos & the Axol Benedict and we were so pleased. The Benedict came with birria and a homemade hollandaise sauce that was rich and creamy. The birria tacos were one of the best we ever had. Next time we're getting the chilquilles which were popular and recommended. The restaurant is small, busy, but not crowded uncomfortable. The server and owner were so kind. What a Bay View gem.
I had a weekday off and decided to take myself out to breakfast. So happy this place opens early. I went in at 8am and there were a few other people dining. I'm a big fan of their breakfast tacos. The chorizo is flavorful. I will add that the tacos are a messy meal, at easy for me. I used multiple napkins. The tacos come with your choice of breakfast potatoes or fruit. The cafe has a small bar that you're able to order it and an assortment of tables. I recommend getting here early if here on a weekend. Paying with cash is slightly cheaper than paying with a card.
The secret is out! This new place is quickly becoming a favorite for brunch in the Bay View neighborhood. The service is wonderful, the food is amazing and the drinks are on point. Prices are reasonable, and we will definitely be adding this spot as part of our brunch rotation!
I met a friend here for brunch on a Saturday. VERY BUSY! They don't take reservations, and we waited about an hour (45 minute wait minimum) and there were just two of us. We arrived at 11 am, so it was peak brunch time. We did not expect the wait to be that long. It was a very cold day, so we waited indoors. However, folks must have put their name on the list and left and waited elsewhere as we noticed folks showing up and getting seated - so so my suggestion is to arrive early, and put your name on the list. There isn't a lot of seating. That's my tip for you if you're going on a weekend! They will text you when the table is ready. Or you can join the waitlist right here! I didn't know that beforehand. Backing up just a bit - it was my first time here, and there isn't huge or visible signage from the street, so I ended up passing right by and going around the block trying to locate the building. There is street parking, and even on a busy Saturday, I found street parking easily, but I'd love some bigger signage so we can easily find it. It's got an upbeat atmosphere and cozy. Besides the very long wait, we enjoyed the food. I ordered the Breakfast tacos and my friend ordered the Childaquiles Tradicionales. I'd love to sample other things on the menu.

Definitely sign up for the waitlist on the way there. There were several things on the menu I wanted to try. Chilaquiles are popular. I went with the Vegetariano bowl so I could get a side of pancakes, and I upgraded to the guyaba (guava) pancakes for a small upcharge--was also eyeing the horchata. The food was good. The over easy eggs on my bowl were perfectly runny and there were plenty of delicious breakfast potatoes underneath and a variety of vegetables. The pancakes were beautifully presented and the guava sauce was something different. The server and bartender were friendly and kept my coffee filled. Owing to the small restaurant size and the crowd they're pretty strict about seating. Several people tried to come up to the bar for a drink while they were waiting and were told it was for customers on the waitlist. That said it was nice that they kept the bar open for seating so solo patrons like me could get a seat without taking up a whole table. I would come back here and try some more of the menu.

The chilaquiles themselves were delicious, though the meat could have used a bit more seasoning. We also tried the kids pancakes, which were super tasty and a fun treat for the kids. For drinks, I highly recommend the passion and guava mimosas. Overall, it's a welcoming, friendly cafe and every dish is beautifully presented.
Absolutely obsessed with this spot! We only live a few blocks away and walk by all the time. Not sure what took us so long to go! There's always people standing outside waiting to be seated every weekend so you know it's good. They have an online waitlist that tells you the wait time and keeps you updated on your spot in the queue, which is super helpful. The staff were all very nice and accommodating. The inside is decorated with lots of traditional Mexican decor. The menu has lots of a variety so you're guaranteed to find something you like. I got the huevos a la Mexicana with the Guyaba pancakes and my husband got the berry dulce French toast. It was all delicious! Hard to make a decision because so many dishes looked amazing. I had a vanilla late in a talavera mug and my husband got an iced caramel latte. We also tried the guava and regular mimosas. All in all, a great experience and we will definitely be coming back!

It's a small cute diner, but what really slapped was the food. YOU HAVE TO GET THE CHURRO FRENCH TOAST. (Mexico City Style Churro Toast). I'm normally a savory breakfast kinda girl, and the chilaquiles were fine, but the deep fried brioche bread mixed with cinnamon sugar and chocolate sauce was divine and I will be back for it again!

So cute here. The food is delicious. The staff is so sweet. There are steps to enter, so not very easily accessible for strollers/wheelchairs/disabilities. What we got: Churro French toast - Huge portion and huge hit with our kid. Crispy and crunchy without tasting oily. It's sweet but not crazy--the sauces are so good too. Kids menu buenos dias breakfast - Classic breakfast and more than enough for a kid. We had ours split so that each could try the french toast while also getting some protein in for the morning. Axo omelette - Tasty, generous portion packed with meat and veggies. Come with a huge stack of pancakes so you get something sweet and savory if you can't decide between the two. Molletes - These are huge. Husband was surprised by how big a portion it was--he added on birria but thinks it would have been better regular without it. This was super filling but tasty (definitely a little heat to the spice). Coffee - Such a good, strong coffee! We were both pleasantly surprised. Normally coffee is kind of a weak afterthought, but this is good for getting you your morning jolt. read more

Had a lovely breakfast in this cozy nook. We will have to be back for more. This birra omelet was delicious. I wish they gave me a bit more aju sauce with it. My son had an amazing looking French toast which he wolfed down and gave high praise. It's a cute joint with good quick service. read more
I've been wanting to go here for such a long time and finally got to go! It was well worth it! So many things on the menu looked so good, but I went with the axo Benedict at the recommendation of my server, and it was amazing! The chipotle hollandaise was delicious, and the poached eggs were done perfectly! The decor is so cute! This place lived up to the hype! It's a regional Mexican breakfast/brunch spot open 7 days a week from 7am to 2pm, and the experience was on point. We started with a Caramel Latte and Caramel Machiato, then moved to the Chilaquiles with birria added as our starter. We chose salsa verde, and it was the right call. Yes, the chips got soggy under the salsa verde, but that didn't take away from the many layers of amazing flavors this dish delivered. Next was the house-made corned beef hash, topped with poached eggs and served over pan fried quartered mini potatoes. Again, every component was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked...another hit! We think the Horchata Pancakes was our favorite dish! I prefer savory over sweet when it comes to brunch, and I never order pancakes because they often disappoint. There are two exceptions for me: Golden Nest is Wauwatosa, and now these ridiculously delicious Horchata Pancakes! They were so incredibly fluffy and absolutely nailed the horchata flavors! You MUST try them! Excellent service from the moment we walked in to the last bite and sip, Axolotl Cafe is a winner, and moving onto my list of favorite restaurants in town, especially for brunch, where it may be my new #1! read more
Join the waitlist! It's right here on Yelp! It's a small place and a busy place and with the current winter weather waiting outside is not so much fun. We joined the waitlist while texting each other to confirm gps eta and I had a quote of 35-45 minutes wait and my drive time was 18 minutes. My friend arrived first and formally checked us in we had about a 10 minutes wait outside. The app kept showing us the update on our status in line including the group sizes ahead of us which was nice. The food was good. I'm more of a savory brunch girl but had to try the guava cakes so got a short stake to share and they actually weren't too sweet so really a perfect end to brunch. Could even see myself ordering a short stake as a main with some potatoes on the side. read more
One thing about me is that I absolutely LOVE axolotls, so when I heard that this brunch spot opened up in Bay View, I knew I needed to come check it out. The thing I want to share about the most was the friendliness of the staff. Everyone here was so kind and checking in with us. The seating here is pretty limited, so if you're planning to come at a peak time, I highly recommend joining the waitlist. Onto the food: oh my god, this was the best breakfast chicken I have ever had! I'm not a breakfast person at all, so I always try to go for a chicken and waffle if the menu has it. This item did not disappoint! Traditionally, it's served with a side of the spicy syrup, but I substituted it for regular syrup. The hot chocolate? Wow! It was so good. The whipped cream tasted so fresh and delicious. I could've had two of these if I really wanted. This spot is a must check out in Bay View, and I truly hope it has a good run in this neighborhood and becomes a staple for generations. read more
Overall it was packed on a Saturday brunch and happy this restaurant is doing so well to add a Mexican spin to brunch food with great food options. The service was fast and food came out faster and everybody was so happy to be a part of this new restaurant experience. Can't wait to go back and enjoy more new food items. Had brunch with some family and decided to meet at Axolotl. It's a small place and there was about a 40 minute wait (it didn't take that long). The place is really cute and has a nice vibe. The staff was very pleasant. While we stood and waited, they took drink orders from us. My wife and I got a rather amazing hot drink called Guava Atole. The food was great! I had an excellent corned beef hash, which had some flair to it with peppers in it. Really good. Everybody was really happy with what they got. I am definitely going to check this place out again. Axolotl cafe is a new breakfast/brunch cafe right on KK. The spot combines Mexico and your traditional brunch spot. It's quite small inside so expect to wait. It's decorated really cute and even has some axolotl art as well. Our server was great and even gave recommendations which I always appreciate. I got a gauva mimosa but couldn't really taste the guava but it was good. For my meal I got the Axo Bowl which was two eggs any style over birria, mexican rice, black beans, onions, fresh cilantro and pancakes. I upgraded to the horchata pancakes and they are officially my favorite in all of Milwaukee. Overall great service and food. A nice brunch spot outside of the normal basics at other places. read more
Since it's a newer spot I've been hearing a lot of buzz about, I wanted to make sure we got there early to avoid a wait. We showed up shortly after they opened on a Sunday, and there were only a few other people, so we were seated right away. There is a good amount of seating inside, but I can see it filling up quick. Cute decor with nod to the axolotl. Everything on the menu sounded great it was hard to decide, we ended up getting the Breakfast Tacos, short stack of the Horchata Pancakes, and the Axo Burrito. The tacos were mad with homemade tortillas and all the ingredients tasted fresh and homemade. The horchata pancakes were delicious and made with their homemade rumchatta. Cant wait to try more on the menu! Overall, it was delicious and service was quick and friendly, we are definitely planning on being back! read more
Staff was nice and attentive! Loved the vase and fresh flowers at the table and lots of natural light. The Axo Burrito was large and very filling. The birria meat was dry and overall could have used more flavor. The house made potatoes were okay on the firmer side/under cooked. Chilaquiles was good, the salsa added flavor and little kick but birria meat was dry. This was a large portion. read more

Absolutely love this new Cafe on KK in Bay View. We came around 1:30 on a Saturday and it was about a 20 minute wait to be seated. The inside is warm and welcoming. The staff offered great suggestions and was very helpful. I tried their Carmel latte, Spicy Chick sandwich, and horchata pancakes. All of it was fantastic, but the pancakes were my favorite. They were perfectly fluffy and delicious. Service was prompt and our food came out way quicker than expected. You wouldn't think they had just opened a week ago. I can't wait to work my way through their menu. read more

Tacos & crispy potatoes were perfectly seasoned, fresh tortillas the side of salsa wasn't very spicy. Horchata pancakes were fluffy & fantastic! Torta was good, bun was crispy. Side of potatoes were slightly undercooked. Poached eggs had a taste of vinegar, not great. Cranberry juice hit the spot! Busy spot in Bayview, warm & homey feeling. Check in on the waitlist because they get busy but it WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT! The place was all and it got a little loud in there but nothing too overwhelming, Got the chilaquiles with over easy eggs and my friend got the Axo bowl. I added the birria and it was worth it. So flavorful! Chilaquiles done right!! We sat at the bar and every dish that was brought out looked so good! Service was amazing- everyone was kind and attentive and the food came out so quickly! An amazing addition to the Milwaukee brunch scene! Smaller than I thought it would be, so it was PACKED on a Sunday at noon. Definitely check the waitlist before walking in. If you order a hot beverage, they have the CUTEST mugs. I'm obsessed with them. I would go back just to drink out of one again. The food was delicious -- the kind you wish your stomach was bigger for. Will definitely go back to order another hot beverage and maybe try their alcohol options as well. Such a cool vibe inside this cafe. The staff and patrons bring a Cozy and uplifting feel to the experience. Beautiful coffee mugs and Mexican style breakfast plates make this place stand out from others. The bartender recommended the breakfast tacos and they did not disappoint, great flavor and solid portion size. The side salsa was also delicious. Great way to start the weekend! Thank you! read more

The food was delicious, and the vibe was incredible. Even though it has not been open very long, the restaurant feels like it has a loving soul. Cozy ambiance and friendly staff. Food was on the pricier side with the carnivoro bowl ($18) and upgrade to horchata pancakes ($3), cuernito sandwich ($16.95) and axolotl toast ($17.95). For the price, the axolotl toast was disappointing with minimal avocado spread. The carnivoro bowl was on the saltier side, but the horchata pancakes were DELICIOUS with the perfect amount of sweetness.
