Love their crispy cod fish tacos. So good! Tender, flaky, and perfectly fried served in warm corn tortillas. Every bite had a little bit of everything - sweet, savory, crunchy and a bit smoky all at once. The tacos were topped with red onion, plantain crunch, cabbage, pickled jalapeño, and chipotle mango. My husband and I came on a Friday evening a few weeks ago to try the pickle martini as I absolutely love martinis and have heard great things about the one here. We sat to where I guess is a second bar towards the side of the room. We ordered some apps including a blooming onion which was fantastic. The martini was great. The only thing I would say that needs improvement is the bartenders vibe.. her face seemed annoyed by any and everything - kind of as if she hated being there. I wish this menu and whiskey selection existed in another bar with a different staff and management. This was my rare visit sitting at the bar where I was able to actually order a drink when I wanted because the normal bartender (who spends their time talking to regulars instead of working) had backup. Said backup doesn't seem to know that you need to stir draft cocktails instead of serving them warm in spite of the ice cube, or that you should give someone who orders food utensils and a napkin. Alas. The chicken sandwich was soggy now that they've switched out the brioche bun for Pullman slices, but still tasted good. Maybe not enough to keep trying this place though. read more

Such a nice pub in the heart of Astoria! Felt transported to Ireland/UK inside - just look at that perfect Guinness. Friendly service and reasonable prices too! Came for the Thanksgiving Eggrolls and they were sooooo good. It sounds gimmicky but they were actually fantastic. Happy belated birthday to me! I always loved coming here when I lived in Astoria over a decade ago, so it felt like the perfect "throwback" spot to celebrate my return to Queens. The Dirty Pickle martini is a must try and really hits. Now, add some birthday Pickle Back shots recommended by our server and you'll be up for anything! The third time is the charm. My previous two visits were mixed. The first time, before COVID, my burger was tasteless. The second time, we had to deal with stupid bouncers or security guards before being let into their bar/pub. That's a huge turnoff for me, and it's only worth it for strip clubs and concerts. Sweet Afton is a hip Irish-style pub known for its craft cocktails, extensive beer selection, and upscale pub fare. It has a cozy interior with exposed brick and a sought-after outdoor garden area that is enclosed in the winter.  A few of their menu items include "Astoria's best burger" (using Pat LaFrieda beef), the Dirty Pickle Martini (featuring McClure's pickle juice), and beer-battered fried pickles. I learned that they have a sister pub called the Bonnie in Ditmars, which I have been to and had a great time. Last Saturday I came back for a third time. I was surprised at how things had changed; much more laid-back, with good customer service, good vibes, and one of the most delicious bar burgers I have ever eaten, with a side salad, in any pub or establishment in Queens. Furthermore, Sweet Afron had some nice alternatives to bear and larger, and I selected a cider instead. First, I was offered a sip, and then, upon my approval, a full glass of cider. Nice place to catch up with friends. The front is a bar, but in the back there are tables where you can sit. The front is a little bit louder, but since we have a reservation I think that's why we went to the back. All in all, a good meal and a good place to catch up for bar food and drinks with friends. Inside can be a little dark in the table area, but nothing out of control. read more

This is a cute neighborhood spot with a Southern inspired menu. I enjoyed it when I first came here years ago and came for brunch just a few weeks ago. They have a bottomless drink option for brunch for just $20 which is a great deal if you're gonna have more than one drink. I like that they don't require the entire table to participate because not everyone wants to have more than one drink or want brunch drinks. We ordered fried pickles for the table. They were lightly battered and the sauce was delish. I ordered the fried chicken biscuit and it was very good. Everyone was happy with their food. Was here about a month ago for a buddy that had returned from working in Cali. He recommended this spot being a native from Astoria. Hard to rate Sweet Afton. It was average. Not bad but not great. It was easy to make a brunch reservation for a party of 5 on Google. When we arrived, they were cleaning our table and was seated within 10 mins. Three of us opted to participate in the bottomless boozy brunch, which was $20 on top of our entree. There were a few drinks selections like mimosas, bloody Marys, rum punch, and beer. We ordered an assortment of entrees like the steak and egg melt, green eggs and ham, breakfast nachos, and fried chicken and biscuits. While the nachos were good, I didn't see what made them a breakfast item. The toppings were tasty and cheesy as expected. The fried chicken and biscuit was a little underwhelming as I thought I had ordered the chicken and waffles. The sandwich had breaded chicken breast that was coated in some type of hot sauce. It didn't seem like it was made fresh and was quite thin. The best thing I had was the steak and egg melt. The bread was perfectly toasted and the steak and filling was substantial. It was cheesy and had good flavors. Throughout our meal, our waitress did not really come check on us for drinks, but there was another staff that kept bringing us more bottomless refills. We appreciated him bringing us mini carafes each time. I think we each had about 4 drinks and felt decently buzzed. However, after the brunch, 2 of us felt sick with intense stomachaches. Overall, the service and ambiance was good for a nice hangout with friends. I wouldn't recommend the bottomless brunch since I don't know what they mixed their drinks with and it made us feel sick. read more

We went for an early dinner, and the service was poor even though they were at half capacity at most. The drinks we had were very tasty, but the food was awful. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich that was absolutely smothered in sauce. It was impossible to eat without getting it everywhere. The chicken wasn't very good either. Definite GEM in Astoria. Mature crowd, great cocktail lineup and craft beers along with really good bar bites. Before mentioned is the perfect recipe for a great local establishment. I've been to Sweet Afton several times over the last couple of years, and find myself continue to wanting to return. This spot is an Astoria staple, and I really love coming here for brunch and happy hour. The vibe is laid back and rustic. For brunch, I really enjoy the Biscuit & Egg sandwich and Avocado Toast. The Hand Cut Fries with Malt Mayo is also a must-order because their Malt Mayo is so delicious! I've also had a number of cocktails here, and they were all really well crafted. I particularly love the Espresso Martini. The service is always friendly and attentive. There's not much that I can say about Sweet Afton that hasn't already been said. It's a very solid choice in Astoria--gentrified Astoria, that is. I've dined here several times over the years and haven't left with a sour (pun intended) experience since my first--I trashed on them in my first review (and on this place, overall because I was a kid) but they have improved a lot over the years. Probably because I don't go out solely just to go drinking anymore. It's one of those decent places that's just etched into my subconscious since I don't keep up with the dining scene in Astoria as much or don't want to think too hard about looking for a great dining or chill drinking experience. I even had one of my birthday dinners here (because, you guessed it--I was lazy about doing research) and it has proven to be a good setting for both small and mid-sized groups. This goes without saying, but the appetizers are a must--especially their famous fried pickles. Go all out on them and call that your dinner even. Cocktails are great here, too--get the Dirty Pickle Martini (duh!). The really neat thing about this place is that there's not really a waiting list and all tables are up for grabs if you see space, which I personally like since you do wonder what goes on with waitlists at restaurants sometimes. read more

I really like the decor at Sweet Afton. They have exposed brick, velvet curtains, cute little flowers on the tables, and candles, which create a nice intimate vibe. This place is great for a date night or just to hang out with friends. They play music but at a reasonable volume that allows for conversation. Our server was really great! My friend and I were pretty distracted by our conversation, and she had to come back several times to take our order. She answered all of our questions about the menu and explained the various drinks, all with a great cheerful attitude. I ordered the Philly Steak patty melt, and my friend ordered the Sweet Afton burger with fries. I really liked the patty melt. It was very flavorful, and all of the ingredients blended well together. I tried the dirty pickle martini since it was half off, this taste exactly as it sounds, so if you're a fan of pickles, you must order this. read more

Would recommend, I'm never in Astoria visited Sweet Afton on a date. Service was great very attentive, friendly and gave good recommendations. Drinks were made perfectly not too strong or weak, the dirty pickle does have that pickle juice taste but if you're ordering it I'm sure that's what you're into. Fried chicken sandwich was good, the flavors are there but the coleslaw overpowered the chicken and made the breading soggy so the crispiness wasn't there anymore. I wasn't a fan of the bread on the sandwich either tasted too buttery, I ended up removing it. read more

Loooooved sweet afton! My partner and I were in the area and feeling snacky, so we came to have a drink and split a sandwich. Everything on the menu looked incredible, but we ended up getting the afton blossom (it's been so long since I've had a blooming onion!) and the chicken sandwich. The sandwich had a generous portion of chicken on it with perfectly toasted bread and was so filling. It doesn't come with fries, you'd have to order those separately! The In a Jif shot was very unique, so we had to try it.. PB whiskey AND Pistachio! If you like nutty drinks, you'll enjoy this. Great neighborhood place with yummy cocktails and food. I tried the Don't Call Me Shirley and the Impractical Magic drinks. Both were delicious and one had this rim, salty and sweet at the same time. I don't know what it was but I'd go back to find out! The food was perfect for snacking. We got the shishito peppers, kale dip, thanksgiving egg rolls, fries and popcorn chicken. My friend and I came here one night it's a place on my list and I guess I'm glad we got to experience it. It was pretty empty inside when we went and we were able to pick where we wanted to be seated. We chose a booth in the corner and we're comfortable with that. After being handed menus and looking over them once we were ready to place our order, we were then told about a night menu. This means all items on the menu were not available only the menu options they have a moon next to it. I don't eat meat so my options were very slim to none. I begin with one shot of patron & followed up with a Ruby, Bartlett. The drink was all right, but I went back to patron pineapple and cranberry after. For my starter I ordered the fried pickles which were good my friend and I thought that they were all right. For our entrée, I ordered the cauliflower quesadilla and he ordered the burger with fries. I also ordered a side of fries. The cauliflower quesadilla was not my favorite. I literally ate two pieces and left the rest I didn't enjoy it. I would like to come back when they offer a regular menu to be able to try some of the items that I really wanted to be able to try... We'll see if I'm able to circle back around. read more

Honestly I didn't expect to hear from them but I did. Apparently they were in the process of making changes when I heard back and they were apologetic so when they asked me back, I decided to give it another shot. The date I picked happened to be their anniversary party day so it was very lively inside but the back porch area was still quiet enough so I was able to enjoy the meal and drink fully. I wish I would've taken more pictures but I was pretty much taking in the environment and the food which were great. Since I was able to make it there a bit earlier than 11 PM, I got to enjoy a couple of items that are not included in the late night such as mac & cheese on the picture . And the popcorn chicken was as good as I remember from the first visit. I had two waitresses and they were both lovely. I hope they will keep it up when I eventually come back.
