This place absolutely nails the atmosphere. The space is elegant, polished, and has the kind of ambiance that makes you excited to settle in for a long night out. The drinks were well made, the oysters were fresh and enjoyable, and overall the venue itself makes a strong first impression. Unfortunately, the service completely undermined the experience. Our server, Emma, came across as dismissive and visibly uninterested in serving our table from the start. There were long stretches where we couldn't get attention for additional drinks, to the point that we eventually walked up to the bar ourselves just to ask if we could order. Instead of helping, we were met with attitude and told she would "get to us." What made the experience especially frustrating was the contrast in urgency later in the night. When my girlfriend's card was temporarily declined because her bank flagged the location -- something resolved immediately with a quick text confirmation from the bank -- Emma appeared at the table almost instantly, with a tone that felt unnecessarily accusatory and embarrassing, as though we were unable to pay the bill. It was hard not to notice how quickly attention arrived for that situation compared to how difficult it had been to receive basic service throughout the evening. To make matters worse, after we got home, my girlfriend discovered her card had been charged twice for the same bill. It's disappointing because the restaurant itself has so much potential. Beautiful setting, quality drinks, and good seafood should make for an easy recommendation. I found myself at The Last Word the other night for a colleague's going away gathering. I really like Astoria, but don't find myself in the area as often as I would like. Hence, I was looking forward to trying a new place in the neighborhood while also catching up with my friends. I looked up the place before arriving and saw that it was a cocktail bar, so it seemed like a place that was really up my alley. The Last Word is located on Ditmars, among a number of other businesses. Walking in, you're immediately greeted by a smallish vestibule with some seating areas, but the space is actually quite large and as you keep walking you notice how roomy it actually is. There's a large bar to the left that serves as a focal point, and a combination of booths and chairs that fit a variety of party sizes. The aesthetics were typical of a cocktail bar/lounge: low lighting, warm colors, and an almost vintage aesthetic; it all worked really well. The menu had a good variety of cocktails as well as beer and wine. Additionally, they had a variety of small plates and snacks. We had three rounds, and I was able to try their spiked hot cocoa, sidecar, and junglebird. All three drinks were quite good - my favorite was the junglebird for both flavor combination and aesthetic reasons. The spiked hot cocoa was also a standout, stronger than I expected but good nonetheless. We also got a lot of snacks: garlic and white bean dip, two flatbreads, bruschetta, a Belgian warm pretzel, anticuchos (beef skewers), empanadas (combo of beef, pork, and cheese), a charcuterie board, and the TLW party of two which was kind of a sampler tower. All the food was tasty - I wouldn't call anything a destination worthy, but it was all good quality and perfect to nosh on between sips. Service was awesome, and really what pushed this experience into the 5-star tier for me. From the moment I walked in I was greeted by the host (whose name escapes me - I wanna say Lucas but can be totally off) who really set the tone for the entire night. Our server was also really great, on top of everything and made sure that we were always taken care of. Overall, I had a great experience at The Last Word. I have been to the Last Word twice. I would go again. When I walked in the second time, I thought it looked familiar. I then recalled the first time, from before I was as regular about recording everything on Yelp. I had to go there, just as the pandemic was ending, to pick up a bib for a half marathon. I had a beer, and it was a festive place. So I was meeting a friend on the same street. We were having dinner. I was early. I ducked into Last Word. This was on a Monday. It was sedate, a group of three ladies at the bar, and a smattering of other folk. I requested a black and tan (or, at an Irish pub, a half and half, due to the association of the colors). If you know the drink, a stout with an ale, usually Guinness for the former, it requires skill. The reason is if you just pour, everything mixes together. The idea is to float the heavier, darker ingredient atop the lighter, paler partner. You use a special spoon (or the standard Guinness logo utensil). Some places charge extra. The person preparing the concoction needs to be patient. The bartender told me afterward she had never made one. She did great. For that, I tipped extra. I am posting this review as a commendation. Best coffee drink I had hands down. We had the blue ivy oysters which were delicious, the meat and cheese board and the beef skewers. The food was really good but the drinks were better. The only con was the wait time but again it was Saturday night. Our drinks took forever to come. Maybe they need more bartenders for the weekend but idk if that would even be a good idea because the bartender was soooo great idk if they could find someone the same level as him. This is a cute little bar located in Astoria that I had the pleasure of trying on my way to LGA airport the other day! In addition to a bunch of handcrafted cocktails (I was eyeing a few!), they also have some nice snacks you can enjoy with your drink, including oysters and empanadas. I ended up getting the Go Go Time, which tasted just like an iced chai - creamy and sweet but not too heavy. If you check in on Yelp, you can also get free cocktail shot - the server told me nobody had redeemed this in a really long time (do people not use Yelp anymore?!), but I really hope this deal helps more people discover this great bar with delicious drinks :) The day I was here (Sunday) they also had a live band playing - turns out they have live jazz every Sunday at 7 pm! It was on a Wednesday night which they have live Jazz. We tried a few different cocktails and I really like the Corpse Reviver, it's refreshing and I can drink that all night haha. The Junglebird also refreshing if you like pineapple flavor. The Mosquito is a nice drink with a kick of ginger linger in your mouth.
