The catch of the day red snapper at Azalea in Old San Juan was one of the most overcooked pieces of fish I've ever been served, while still being almost $40, and the chef ultimately refused to remove it from the bill. My girlfriend and I walked in around 6pm and were literally the first guests in the restaurant. The host and staff were friendly, and the experience started off promising. The menu was one of the most expensive we saw in San Juan, with entrées in the mid-to-high $30 range. We didn't mind, but expectations were naturally higher. We ordered the house sushi roll, spicy edamame, coconut curry chicken, and the catch of the day, a red snapper. The appetizers were good, but the snapper was very rubbery and extremely tough instead of flaky. We each took two bites and stopped. When the waiter checked on us, I politely mentioned the fish seemed overcooked and he offered to take it away, for which we apologetically thanked him. We ordered dessert, then the check arrived, and we were told by our waiter that "the chef refused to remove the dish because of a policy about eating more than half", which we absolutely had not. Our bill was $200 for an appetizer, a roll, two entrées and one drink. We had wonderful meals all over San Juan and Old San Juan during this trip, which only made this experience stand out as the worst by far. With so many excellent restaurants in Old San Juan, there is no reason to risk an expensive dinner here. I cannot recommend Azalea.
Asian meets Puerto Rican flavors at the amazing Azalea! We loved our Christmas Eve dinner at this local favorite in Old San Juan. Highlights were the duck gyoza, which came with a really delicious sauce, the pork bao (dip your bao in the gyoza sauce for an awesome combination!), the sushi (we got the guava sushi, and the Azalea, as one of us doesn't eat raw fish), and the incredible apple pie cobbler. Our amazing server, Emmanuel, was so attentive and the atmosphere was so chic yet inviting. Highly recommend making reservations ahead of time on OpenTable or Yelp, they fill up fast!
Highly recommend Azalea!! I stopped in on a whim while walking Old San Juan with a friend on vacation. We had a craving for sushi and this place did not disappoint. It has a beautifully curated menu. You won't find your typical rolls here which definitely drew me to try it out! I had the Geisha cocktail which was well balanced and complimented the meal well. We started off with the ceviche which was refreshing and delicious! We split 3 different rolls, all different and unique but we loved them all! I think my favorites were the Guava Paow and Azalea roll! I thought the rolls were on the smaller side but the ceviche was a good size appetizer for two. The restaurant has a bar in the front then the back is a more intimate quiet ambiance that is beautifully decorated. Service was the a bit slow but overall a great experience and I would definitely recommend!
I've had slower service... I think, but I can't remember where. Food is good, but it's beyond Puerto Rican slow, it's just annoying. Came here for a special occasion dinner and spent the evening staring at empty glasses and plates. Service is politely rude. I'd go somewhere else unless you honestly don't care about time and just want to chill until food arrives. Then you'll be happy.
I was torn about giving this restaurant a perfect score. The truth is that the servers were really nice and the food was great. When we arrived, we walked in and did not have a reservation. A server suggested we sit at the bar. We did and chatted with other guests that were dining at the bar too. We ordered drinks which came quickly and House water. We placed our orders for food a bit later. The food took more than 15 minutes to come out. What was strange? is that the other diners who arrived after us got their food first. The survey explained to me because I ordered two appetizers and I wanted them to come out all at the same time that my food was taking longer. i'm not really sure how that works. But even after he told me that we waited still for about 15 minutes. We ordered the cauliflower to sushi rolls and a shrimp dish. We also had two drinks. The bill came to just $100. As I said, the food was good but the wait for the food at the bar was really long.
My friends and I were walking by and saw how cute this place was. We love Asian food so we wanted to come for dinner later that night. We got some drinks and started off with edamame and duck gyoza. Gyoza was pretty good and edamame is always good anywhere. We then ordered sushi rolls and noticed how small they were compared to the price you pay! My friend got a chicken curry dish she thoroughly enjoyed. We all enjoyed our food but the place is a bit overpriced for what you pay for. Not the best sushi I've had but it hit the spot. This was our more expensive restaurant we ate at on our trip. The staff was attentive and nice.
Good food but not totally impressed! This was our first time in Puerto Rico and this was the first restaurant we ventured to. We had a reservation so we were seated right away which is nice! The restaurant is super cute and the ambiance is perfect for a quaint date night! We started out ordering some cocktails and appetizers. The Geisha cocktail is a must try (don't be deterred by the sesame seeds - they were a great addition). For appetizers we had the Duck Gyoza and the Ceviche! Absolutely no complaints about the appetizers! They were flavorful and delish! For dinner we ordered the Agemono Roll, Avocado Roll and General Tso chicken. The Agemono Roll and the avocado roll were delicious! The General Tso while flavorful was entirely too dry!! The reason I am giving this restaurant experience 3 stars is because the service was not very good. There were people who were seated after us who received their food well before us. The server rarely came and checked in with us either. Overall it took almost 2 hours to get our dinner. Also the restaurant ran out of salmon so a lot of what we wanted to order wasn't available. All in all, not a bad place by any means but we just weren't wowed by our experience.
YUM! This place had such good sushi and everything we ordered was fantastic. We walked in around 9p and got seated at the bar. My only complain is the fish/sashimi wasn't as cold as I would have liked it to be. I think served in a bed of ice would have made it top tier. Everything was so fresh and the favors worked so well together. You have to go before 915p or they will turn you away since the restaurant closes at 10p. Definitely hit up this place if you're craving sushi. read more
We came here, not planning to, and then forgot that this is a place we had eaten in last year and loved it. Food I had this time was very good, but I will say honestly I did prefer it a little more the first time. Service, however, was excellent and the atmosphere very pleasant. Lemon grass crème brûlée was excellent. read more

Food and drinks were yummy. The Kari Kari roll & duck gyoza were my favorite. We ordered blind on the drinks and they were both great (I can't even remember which ones we ordered). Would recommend! read more

Beautiful venue and fantastic drinks. If you have island time, this is a great spot. When we arrived we booked our reservation for 8:45, we were sat down an hour later and when we ordered our food it took another hour for it to arrive. I'm probably exaggerating.... it was probably longer. Please do better with time. There is limited table space and it still takes that long to make a meal. That's an issue. Im five feet, 120lbs and I had four drinks with no food in my system and I sobered up from waiting so long. The food was delicious but I don't think I would want to wait that long for a meal again. I suggest grabbing a drink from here and walking to the next restaurant for food. read more
Surprisingly very impressive! Walking thru Old San Juan me and my friends wanted a quick bite and one of us was a sushi connoisseur- but ME? I'm a newbie... We decided to stop by here because it had great reviews, and we were in the mood for sushi. I was questioning if it would be good bc we were in the Caribbean.. and sushi is Japanese .. but our server Neomary reassured us and made me feel like i was in for a treat.. WHICH IS TRUE!! i've heard theres famous chefs working here!! VIBE:: Seemed pretty upscale.. super nice.. it was like a alley vibe with white table cloths. Really made me feel like i was eating someone fancy, pretty awesome change of scenery compared to outside. FOOD & DRINK:: *Surf & Turf was pretty good! it had sirlion steak on top with fried shrimp in the middle. I really enjoyed it. tasted really good! the steak was tender and the sauce around it really put everything together *Cubachino Roll- i really liked this one too. it was kinda sweet and had plantains, very nice twist. have not had anything liked that before! *Salmon Skin Roll- it was alright, kinda crunchy.. good but not anything too crazy. Maybe because im not familiar with salmon and salmon skin. *Yellowtail Sashimi- my friend go this (the one whose a sushi connoisseur) she said it wasnt bad!! so i believe her *Fried Bread Budin - VERY GOOD.. table loved it and killed it in a min. was pretty much like bread pudding with ice cream and some sweet sauces.. *Lychee Colada - pretty good! came in a cup that was very different than what i've seen before also, the cream kind floats to the top so be sure to use a straw to mix it up every once in a while SERVICE:: Neomary was AWESOME. loved it . loved the recommendations and she killed it! After reading other reviews I made a point to hold on to my hunger and wait until restaurant opened at 5 pm. It was the best culinary decision of my trip. That bourbon guava sauce blew my mind. The menu looked fantastic and it was difficult deciding. I settled on 2 of the rolls and the lemongrass crème brûlée... spectacular. My server was Lilly and she was incredible, very friendly and attentive. I would eat here again and again if I had more days in San Juan. read more

Azalea was a pleasure. The classic appetizers were fantastic, and the unique assortment of sushi rolls were both surprising and exciting. Let me start out with the service - EVERYONE was very well trained and accommodating, I even had a host drape a shall around my shoulders when I was cold. Incredible staff. The ambiance and decor was beautiful. The food was the best Asian I've had in San Juan, although a the miso was not quite hot enough. The fried rice was not quite "fried" enough. And the goat cheese took away from the overall flavor of the blackened beef roll with asparagus. The shrimp tempura roll (photographed) was absolutely delicious although the tempura could be a bit crispier. This is a new place and there is no doubt that people will continue to enjoy this restaurant! Keep up the good work! read more

Overall Azalea gets a 4 star review the ambiance was nice very clean and beautiful it's what you expect to see in a Victorian Puerto Rican building ... we almost didn't even get in beach use there were all booked up but we called out our self on the wait list and there was a cancellation and the hostess was able to get us a table thanks for going above and beyond .... Our waitress Santana was amazing she made the experience upbeat, fun , exciting probably the best service we've had in San Juan .... She recommended dishes for us to try , we ordered the shrimp , dumplings , Goyza and out of those 3 the shrimp was the best definitely a must try the dumplings and goyza I feel the meat was a bit dry and lacks a bit of flavor I mean it's almost there but not quite.... We also had the coconut curry chicken with rice this dish was delicious the flavor was on point ... I do recommend you try this place. read more

We found out, very quickly, that you need to have reservations to eat, on a weekend, in Old San Jaun! We popped into this place, thankfully they had seating at the bar for 2! The signature cocktails were fabulous (highly recommend Zen and Kona Pop). The spicy edamame was unlike any edamame we ever had! (Caution:super spicy!) the Nepali Momos (spinach dumplings) were very tasty the Tsurai roll was exceptionally delish! read more

Loved the place. Went for my birthday. They had a card on the table wishing me happy birthday which was a special sweet touch. Food was great. And service was great too. We had tuna+avocado tacos, i don't remember the fish but it was raw in jalapeño sauce. Sooooo good. My husband has the noodles and I had the scallop pad thai. Great place! Really loved it and highly recommend it. read more

Simply amazing. I came with a group of friends on a girls trip. They accommodated our every need. The service was excellent. Manuel, the bartender, makes the best drinks. Viviana was so sweet and had great recommendations. Every single dish was delicious. read more

We were lucky enough to get a last minute reservation during the holiday weekend. The food was very delicious and the cocktails are just as good. Our waitress was gorgeous and very informative about the menu. Will definitely be back! read more

ended up at this lovely spot because a 5 course meal a few doors down (hint hint) was just way too much food. so, we bailed as soon as the host mentioned that to the people standing ahead of us. we seated us right away even though we didn't have reservations and our wonderful server came to our table top introduce himself as soon as we sat down. we got the tuna tataki, sashimi platter (which was the best part of the meal because of the spanish mackerel), and the salmon main course. the food in every course was delicious. the service was attentive and friendly. they even checked with the chef if there was a fish purveyor on the west side of the island that provided spanish mackerel ;) read more

We had the spicy edamame and ceviche to start and got two of the rolls. Was my birthday so whatever this was was really good also, however I could only take a couple of bites since I was already so full. Would come here again if I'm ever on PR again. Only thing I'd say would be to make dining area livelier with more decor to make it look prettier and inviting. Bar area is nice but, dining area felt like I was just in a garden room with tables surrounding us. Don't stop that from you visiting, I'm just a visual person that likes pretty surroundings! read more

They just opened yesterday and it was amazing!!! Service was a little slow (but we were also starving so that could have made it seem longer). The service was friendly, the ambience was modern and luxe, and the food tasted AMAZING!!!! read more
