Not great, not terrible, average. The pizza is hot and fresh. They make it when you place your order. It takes about 15 minutes for your order. We ordered an individual and a medium pizza. The pizza crush was very doughy and chewy. There was no crispness to it. (Both individual and medium pizza) The pizza sauce itself was pretty tasty. One of our pizzas had extra cheese (did not order) and the other pizza had barely any cheese. It's better than amusement park pizza, but it is not the greatest. I will say, I blew my diet to eat here, and I am pretty disappointed. Will I return? Not likely. Would I recommend it? If there are no other options and you're starving. The only reason this place did not get a 1 Star is because the team was nice, polite and friendly. BUT the food definitely deserved a 1 star, here's why: The price per slice is $5.10 and each additional price is extra (up to 3 toppings). Although my piece was a bit over cooked, so the crust was dry, hard and dehydrated (like a cracker) and the sauce was almost fully dried up too. That might seem like a cooking error BUT I believe that perhaps the dough is pre-made and that is why it's not coming out correctly as opposed to fresh or in-house made dough. I would compare the Pizza to worse than concession stand food. Even think about this, an entire Little Cesar's pizza is about the price of one slice here and I would pick Little Cesar's over this everytime. read more

Went to Azar's for a late lunch early dinner cause i was craving pizza. Got a small pepperoni with sausage and onion. I was wanting a Antipasto salad and what they had was just as good. The ranch dressing's is awesome and so was the pizza except I couldn't taste the sausage on it because it had a bland no flavor taste. I like my sausage spicy. The service here was very friendly. It is a bit pricey though i spent $30.00 for a pizza, big salad and a large ice tea. read more

Location, location, location! The views are beautiful here, the breeze is unbeatable, and, most of all, the pizza is where it's at! The House Special (mushroom, pepperoni, toasted red and green peppers, thinly sliced red onions drenched in a lovely amount of HOME MADE mozzarella) is BOMB! Sauce wasn't too sweet, nor too spicy. We came here after New York style pizza ( across the street) tried charging us $20 for two slices of pizza. Came to azars and was really surprised!! Their pasta and ravioli is amazing ! why is it 7 dollars for a pepperoni slice that looks and tastes like it is a reheated frozen pizza i bought at walmart. i lookes in the back and it is just one guy doing everything. his equipment looks cheap. the only reason this gets 2 stars is because he is nice. read more

Definitely over charging customers with mediocre pizza and pasta. I ordered fettucine alfredo and a 12inch Maui style pizza. the total came out $28... this better be good... Once I had the dishes, the pasta was bland and it was super basic. It just had the pasta and base sauce.. nothing special.. just warm.. I tried the 12 inch Maui, which they charged me $18... I wasn't too impressed by this small pizza shop in Balboa. A good friend recommended this spot as having "The BEST Pizza on the Peninsula," sadly, I would have to disagree. We decided to stop by Azars while visiting Balboa Beach for a late night bonfire. Between the entire group, we ordered a turkey sandwich, calzone, a salad, and two large pizzas. The food was subpar and a bit on the pricier side, the dining room needed a deep cleaning, and Azar's had also run out of ranch dressing - the perfect storm. While I wouldn't go out of my way to visit again, especially with so many locally owned pizza competitors nearby, I do hope that our experience was due to us visiting late on a Saturday night after a very busy beach day. read more

There were like six pizza places within a few blocks, so we chose this one. While the word "gourmet" may be misleading, it was a solid place with generous slices, lots of cheese but not too greasy, and a good selection of toppings. The crust was thick enough to hold the toppings and had a good dough flavor. For a slice of beach pizza, this was pretty good. read more

Oh my....we came to Newport B. with a visitor from N.Y. to Fun Zone harbor cruise, and were hungry. I was not in favor of going to Azar's because it is a pizza place, as opposed to an Italian restaurant. So...plastic utensils, absolutely no interior charm, but it is near the bay. We had salad, white chicken pizza, lasagna, and chicken parmesan. Also a glass of wine, etc. THE SALAD...fresh, crisp, refreshing. Excellent. THE PIZZA...so good, such fresh goodness, from the shell to the cheese and toppings! THE LASAGNA... flawless. THE CHICKEN PARM. well I opted for this because nothing on the menu appealed. It may well be the best I have ever eaten. Flavorful, moist, crunchy, and a sauce that compliments, rather than overwhelm. Wine and beer are inexpensive, and variety is acceptable. BOTTOM LINE...If plain jane, actually non-decor seating is ok, this place is a gem. Open since 1975, and no accident. We live 30 minutes away and will return. As native New Yorkers, we think we recognize good food and value. Yeah right. Regardless, again, a gem in the rough! read more

Excellent restaurant!!! We ordered a slice of pizza, eggplant Parmesan, buffalo wings and lasagna. The same man who took our order walked out food out to us. It was quick, hot and fresh. The eggplant Parmesan was fabulous. The salad was fresh and the buffalo wings were very good too. My husband had lasagna and said it was good and my little girl loved the pizza. Me: "Oh, awlright, you choose where we're going to eat....." Which led us to Azar's. I'll confess that I was pouting a bit because there were all these cute trendy eateries in the Balboa pier boardwalk area. Hubby loves hole-in-the-wall places. I put aside my diabetic dietary restrictions for this one meal and ordered a turkey sandwich. Bread........lovely lovely bread! It seemed to be made either in a bakery or in-house. This wasn't the usual mass-produced hoagie roll served in most places. Also, it was served warm and toasty. Oh yes, I was a happy gal. Hubby was really hungry and ordered a slice with pepperoni and a pasta salad. That salad was pretty darn good! And much bigger than he expected it to be. So the pizza really is not great but this was the only place open at 7:00 PM on a Tuesday night. The other pizza place up the street said they were open and then we got here only to find they they were closed. Again the pizza wasn't great but it also wasn't bad. Azar's has good quality pizzas at a reasonable price - Medium Pesto Pizza $15.95, individual 2 topping pizzas for $6.95. It meant the niece and nephews could each get their own pizzas and no squabbling! And the adults could have something besides cheese! Woo-hoo! They also have great spaghetti and it all comes with garlic bread, which is loaded with garlic. What we really love here as well are their cold sandwiches. Most subs are not great, but not at Al's. They know how to make them and the small size is perfect. As to their pizza, it is just great. We love their white pizza and always get that to go.

Horrible service, my "7 minute wait" for two pizzas turned into a 30 minute wait, people after us were being served first with fresh WHOLE pizzas and other baked sandwiches, they didn't have simple cheese pizza ready yet they continued to make pepperoni Pizzas.
