Probably the best view I've ever had at a restaurant - if you get the right seats, you can see the Atlantic Ocean right next to you as you eat and it's gorgeous. However, I'd say my experience was below mid. Firstly, there were a lot of flies near my table that were constantly getting into my food throughout the whole meal. I ordered a shrimp curry, which was very solid but not great. The kitchen messed up the order of some of the other people in my group and made them a dish that was much more expensive, but the manager would not agree to serve them that dish at the price that the original dish was. As a result, we had to wait quite a while for the kitchen to make the correct dish. I hope the food wasn't wasted. Disappointed in my experience here even though it's gorgeous. Truly disappointed with our experience here. My boyfriend and I were looking forward to the beautiful experience and views at this establishment. We arrived for a reservation right on time. We were interested in having drinks and a light bite while enjoying the view before heading out to the beach area. We received our drinks and were informed the 2 light bites we were interested in were the exact options that were not available for the day. There were other amazing options in the menu, but unfortunately we weren't hungry enough for a full meal. When we mentioned this to our server, he told us that we need to leave to make room for other customers and promptly handed us our bill without even offering us a spot at the bar! I don't know where to begin. Having spent 3 weeks traveling the entire country and dining out, this location was the obvious draw. I will not post pictures, as the food is not worthy of it. Cod was undercooked. Tenderloin was over cooked. Vegetables? Way over cooked. A side of fries...what could go wrong: barely warm. Soup? Meh. Salad was nice. 90min visit in total. When we arrived, we finally asked to move to another table because 15min in we had not seen a soul. We just sat there. New table: Our next server we finally saw when our order was taken...and again when our bread et al was theatrically spun and delivered (the actual hi-light of the evening)...and then not again (but we did see them entertain others - take pictures, maybe chat up a table), and here we thought things would improve...oh, the pitcher of Sangria...was removed from the bill, as we never saw it. Had our glass of water, ate our meal, expressed our displeasure and will move on from this dismal experience. I arrived at 1:00 and no outside table was available. I said I was willing to wait for an outside table. I waited almost two hours for a 3:00 PM lunch reservation because I wanted to be seated outside on the deck overlooking the sea. They ended up seating me inside by the window but with the sun coming in it was stuffy. So I had a crab appetizer but am going to skip main dish and dessert and return to the outdoor bar below for a burger later. I admit to being peeved because they then gave an outside table to a solo man who was behind me. Yes they are very popular but this is an expensive seafood restaurant charging 9€ for bread and olives (high for Portugal). Im sure the food is good but insist on the outside table with your reservation. The bar below serves burgers, guacamole and good drinks too. Im in town all week so Ill return to Agua e Sal nearby for excellent seafood and the bar below for drinks and sea air. read more

For starters...the food is good there and the view is spectacular. This is why they received a 3 star review. Now onto the reason that this is my last time visiting the restaurant. The service was subpar to say the least. Service was slow and we just stood there for at least 25 minutes Un-acknowledged. The waiter - took forever approaching us when the restaurant was not full. It was 5 o'clock. Then he proceeded to school us on Portuguese etiquette when we asked if he spoke English. Actually 4 of the 5 of us are locals from the Colares area where the restaurant is located. He forgot my vegetable soup as well as the extra bread we requested. To top it off he forgot my daughters order - "after" we were already served. I asked the nice bus boy (who seemed to care) to be our waiter - because we were done with Mr UnCharming. The food is expensive and one should not have to spend one's hard working money on bad service. When paying - I told the front cashier woman about our ordeal. She was apologetic and I told her that it appeared that training was necessary for our first "bad waiter". This was my 3rd and probably last time patronizing this establishment. Hopefully this restaurant will take to heart this review and improve. read more

This beachfront restaurant with a view was simply amazing. The couvert of bread, tapenade, pesto w cheese, and cheese de Azeite was amazing. Fresh orange juice was some of the sweetest we've ever had, and the white sangria was top notch We had the bread soup which reminded us of stuffing with garlic. Soooo good. Oysters were special and had a balsamic with onion condiment. We had the fish Cataplans which was like a seafood stew with clams, mussels, shrimp, and fish. Quite delicious. While on a tour of Sintra our guide dropped us off here around 3:30 pm on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was pretty empty with just a few customers. We were visiting the sites along the coast of Portugal when we discovered Azenhas do Mar. The location could not be more fantastic as it's right on the Atlantic coast with breathtaking views. We did not have reservations but after less than a minute our family of four was seated at a table next to window with a view of the ocean. The menu is a little on the expensive side, but the food was delicious. My wife and I ordered the Lobster and Shrimp Risotto and our children had the steak. The service was very friendly and quick. I strongly suggest stopping by if you're in the area as they have an excellent selection of fresh seafood. We had a great time! read more

Given the incredible location, it's the overall experience that makes the restaurant memorable. Relax inside the restaurant with a breathtaking view of the cliffs, the ocean, and the natural pool, hear the waves crashing against the rocks or the sounds of the birds or children playing outside, as you nibble on freshly caught fish while drinking green wine (Vinho Verde, Portuguese). You can only think: this is what a vacation should be like... I thought the food was competent, but not ethereal. As it was lunch, we had grilled fish that had been caught the previous day (the boats are back late afternoon with the day's catch). So, freshness was a big factor in the enjoyment. I also really liked the cheese: Queijo de Azeitao that has a buttery, salty taste, and creamy and supple (semi-soft) consistency. It goes very well with the local bread (Pao). I understand the Arroz de Marisco (seafood rice) is the most popular dish in the restaurant and it's very highly recommended. Azenhas do Mar delivers perfectly on its promise, leading to its deserved reputation and popularity. Casually walking into the restaurant on the weekend in the hopes of immediately finding a table is unwise, as is the difficulty of finding one as the sun is going down and the tide is rising. We were in Sintra for the day and found this place. It is on a beautiful beach and the staff was so warm. To start, we had a local butter cheese, toasted bread chips and olives. We also had local crab that was delicious and served in the crab shell. We shared a local whole fish that was deboned at our table. It was cooked perfectly. The best food, the best service, the best view and the best of everything I can think of! Favorite restaurant in all of Portugal!

Our last dinner during our time in Portugal was at Azenhas do Mar. Although I booked a reservation only a couple weeks in advance, getting our preferred time - 7:30 PM (to catch the sun setting) was no issue at all. The main prize for eating here really is the view, which is absolutely gorgeous, even when there is low mist hugging the coastline (as it was when we were there). It is such a perfect view of the ocean, and the fact that there is a seafood restaurant devoted to the Portuguese style of seafood cooking is perfect. Getting seated did take a little while, though; I get the sense that either the servers were a tad shy, or most of them did not speak English. That said, once our waiter did come, he was extremely helpful. His recommendations on wine were spot-on; his help in explaining how to eat barnacles (a first for us) was perfect; and he made sure we had all of our food in a good amount of time. The only disappointment was that we were pitched a fish for 565 grams, and it turned out to be exactly 1 kilogram more...so aside from paying more, we ended up going out far more stuffed given how large the fish was. As for the food itself - there are a few handful of 'land' items, but you are here to partake in seafood...and that is exactly what we did. First up were the aforementioned barnacles. Without an explanation, we would have had zero idea of how to eat them. It's a bit of a challenge slipping off the sheath that covers the meat, but it's pretty tasty, and you get a fragrant taste of the seawater without it being overly salty. Given how hard it was to eat, 600 grams was probably a tad on the high side for the 4 of us. Next up was the stuffed crab, which was effectively a hollowed-out crab body stuffed with leg meat that had been mixed in an aromatic sauce (not unlike spicy mayo, but less heavy). It was quite delicious and juicy to boot; the only thing that would have made it better was having something other than plain, dry wheat crackers to use for serving and eating. The next dish - the lobster risotto - was absolutely excellent, though. The tail meat was a bit dryer than I would have preferred, but the rich flavor of whatever cheese went into this risotto more than made up for it...fantastic dish and perhaps my favorite of the whole meal. We then moved on to the salt-baked sea bass. As noted earlier, it was quite a bit larger than expected, but it was (almost all) deboned and served to us as shredded chunks of meat with vegetables on the side. I really enjoyed dipping the fish meat, which was plenty succulent in its own right with a teasing hint of salt, in olive oil and just enjoying the simplicity of the dish. The veggies were alright but not as remarkable. Last up was the cataplana...it originally looked like it might be similar to paella, but there is no rice in the dish. It's much more of a fish soup than anything else, with a tinge of spiciness to add a little kick. It was quite tasty in its own right, and I really enjoyed how infused with seafood the tomato-based broth was. We ended up skipping dessert because we were stuffed, but I have to say that the seafood here, for the most part, is pretty exemplary. It was a bit more expensive than what we experienced in Sintra, but it did not come out to be too exorbitant. The main thing to be careful of is ordering too much food...we were basically right at the limit of too much for our party. I would love to come back again if I'm in these parts in the future, and you cannot go wrong with a sunset meal here in the summertime. read more
