Azteca is the only authentic Mexican restaurant in Oswego that offers a wide variety of dishes and drinks to choose from. When you go in either for lunch or dinner they ALWAYS have fresh chips & salsa for you to munch on as you look over the menu. There are many appetizer, entree, and dessert items available to choose from at a really low cost. You can have a meal and an alcoholic beverage all for less than $20. I recommend trying out the chimichangas or having a combination platter in order to try out the tacos, quesadillas, etc. Also, they do have plenty of options available for vegetarians on their menu. Azteca's is the place to go whenever its Thirsty Thursday in Oswego. You can't mention Azteca without picturing a giant margarita. They're pretty cheap ($2.75 on Thursdays) and come in a couple of flavors including lime, mango, and strawberry. I've never had a single bad experience when I've gone to Azteca. Before you leave Oswego you should definitely grab a bite to eat at this establishment. read more

There was a plastic green twist tie in my taco de carne, and a hair in the salsa. When we told out waitress she was shocked then told the owner; when she returned, however, she kind of accused us putting it in there as if we would like to chew on green twist ties. My husband and I were in town to drop our daughter off at the college. We stopped here for lunch mid-week. We were seated right away and a waiter came over to give us some chips and salsa and take our drink orders. Once he took our food order it wasn't too long before our hot food arrived. We both ordered lunch specials which were reasonably priced at around $6. The food was good, not great. The atmosphere was good for a lunch time crowd. I'd come back. One of the best parts of the meal was the dessert: a cheesecake stuffed fried chimi sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate and surrounded by whip cream. Yum read more

This was the only Mexican Restaurant in the area. They were pretty decent in all areas; service, food quality, and drinks. I really liked their Piña colada and their Seafood Fajitas. I used to come here with my roommates and a guy friend of mine on a weekend every once in a while. Their rice and beans were superb. It is like eating marinara sauce with tortilla chips, no taste, let alone even a hint, of onion, cilantro, cumin, etc... just sugar. My husband and I have been craving authentic Mexican but couldn't find anything around us... Azteca's is a beautiful entrance, but very cramped when you walked in. We were greeted quickly and asked to wait in the back (more room) with our pager. About 20 min later we were seated with menus and a high chair waiting at the table for us. This was a wonderful surprise, and I'd love to see this more often at other restaurants. You start off with your standard bowl of chips and salsa, and I have to say this was the least impressive part of our meal. The salsa is very heavy on the cilantro and very mild on any other flavor. There was no heat to it at all, which I was a bit disappointed in. We started off with their version of loaded fries (I can't remember the actual name, i'm sorry!). They were hot, very loaded, and absolutely delicious. Exactly how I wanted to start our meal. The rest of our meal was absolutely delicious too! We went at dinner and I ordered a Combo 7 (enchilada, chili relleno, rice and beans) and my husband ordered the Enchiladas Supreme. Plates were over flowing in sauce and everything was so good I didn't want to leave a bite behind! Our waitress was attentive and quick, without being too chatty. Reunited after 5 years and it's still as good as we remembered it. After graduating college, moving out west where we were spoiled with great mexican food, we found ourselves back in Oswego visiting my brother who is a current student. Decided to go back to old stomping grounds and see how the place was doing... The restaurant looks great, the staff are just as nice as they've always been, and the food definitely lived up to memories past. I enjoyed a fajita plate with chicken and shrimp. The meats were cooked perfectly and the corn tortillas were yummy yummy. My wife had the 'Pollo loco', one of her favorites from our earlier experiences at Azteca and she said it was just as delicious as she remembers. We also shared an appetizer of the Chorizo Queso, which was great. All in all, you can't beat a meal at Azteca. It's good mexican food whether you are in Oswego, NY or in California (I haven't been to Mexico), but the food holds up to the competition. read more

Thursday Margaritas at Azteca one of my favorite pastimes. This Mexican restaurant is cheap, with strong drinks, huge portions and endless chips and salsa. What more can you ask for? You can get a margarita on the rocks, frozen, strawberry, lime or mixed. They are so good and the perfect end to a long week. The food here is made so quickly (almost too quick) and is always delicious. You don't always feel too well after eating this food but in the moment it is just right. There queso fundido is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. Simply amazing. The lunch specials are so cheap and just as big and delicious as their dinners. The desserts here are so delicious too. Only thing is that you can't sit unless you're eating and the place gets SO busy. Make you sure you get here early enough to grab a table. read more

I go to Azteca primarily for the atmosphere, and yes we typically end up here on Thursday nights. It's definitely a college hot spot. Their Mexican food is decent, not anything spectacular, but good for the area. The margaritas are really good, but they're definitely a little on the strong side, no complaints from the college crowd. The noise level and wait times can be grueling on a Thursday night (so note ahead of time), also probably not the best night to bring the family. I've also been on a Monday night, and we were given a free second basket of salsa chips :) The atmosphere isn't as exciting, noisy, and vibrant as Thursday nights, but the place still comes out pretty decent. read more

Azteca is a great place in Oswego for something a little different from the regular fare of pizza, burger, and coffee places around town. The food is prepared fairly quickly. I'm usually impressed how fast the food comes out even when they appear to be busy. Also, the menu is very reasonably priced. You can walk away full without spending too much per person. read more

But they say that they have the best margaritas in Central New York too, and that's more of an accomplishment. They might not be the best margaritas you've ever had, but they are pretty f-ing good. They have other drinks on the menu too if you're not in the mood for their staple. They also have food, but I've never eaten it to be honest (what can I say I'm a booze hound). The service is surprisingly quick even when it's crowded and everyone there is polite. The decor is really nice too. You can tell it's a newer place and that helps especially when you look at the other bars in Oz. I adore Azteca - in fact, I was just there for lunch today. I like that they give you free chips and salsa when you sit down, and I especially like that the salsa is very good (the texture is perfect). Even better, they have a respectable vegetarian selection. The vegetarian options I've tried are very tasty, my personal favorite being the Chiles Poblanos. The Mexican sodas are worth a try as well, strawberry and apple are both good. The service is great as well, all of the servers are friendly and attentive. My only disappointment lies with the dessert menu - I've tried most of the desserts and been seriously underwhelmed by all of them. But in all likelihood, you'll be too full from your meal to be thinking about dessert, so that generally doesn't come into play. read more

I love Mexican food, and Azteca's is middle of the road. I dislike that you only get one bowl of chips, and if they're gone you have to pay for them. Their queso fondido is horrible (almost asked for them to take it back--it wasn't touched). Last time I was there, I got a steak and chicken fajita and the meat was extremely well done.
