The mother-daughter duo met Leon in their hometown of Waterloo. He had opened a Mexican restaurant there, and the food was so good that Metrick urged him to partner with them to open San Miguel. San Miguel quickly became popular, especially among young professionals and Syracuse University students, who would often rave about San Miguel's food, how it's all made in-house, right down to the chips and salsa you're served when you first sit down. The move to Baldwinsville had been in the works for months, and Metrick had hoped to keep open the downtown location. The restaurant at 425 N. State St., however, became part of a state-designated orange zone because of the coronavirus, so all indoor dining had to cease, and Metrick decided to close down and focus solely on the new location, which now occupies the former Muddy Waters Kitchen & Bar, on the banks of the Seneca River at 2 Oswego St. My wife and I were regulars at the original San Miguel on the northside from the time it first opened. Loved it every time we went and we recommended it to all our friends, so we knew we had to try the new location, especially since we live closer to the new location to the old. There's definitely a lot more space. The downtown restaurant seated 91 customers; the Baldwinsville location can accommodate 300, which includes outdoor seating with a waterfront view. The space is decorated nicely. We were sat right away. Chips & salsa immediately on the table as usual. My wife got an order of nachos while I went with the Godzilla Dilla. Everyone was delicious as usual, pricing was what I'd expected, service was fast and friendly. No difference in the quality of food from when they first opened, so we'll be back.

They also have excellent mashed potatoes. The salad bar is a huge bonus. Good way to make sure you get some vegetables in a city not known for healthy food. Most recently, I had a buffalo chicken wrap. It was spicier than I expected. A little too hot for me. Luckily I had the mashed potatoes to balance it out. Service consistently above average. If I would criticize anything, it's that the dining room feels worn. Years ago, this place was a fine dining establishment before it shifted into a tavern concept. It's like the interior hasn't been updated since then, so it feels like a worn fine dining room. But I'm reluctant to mark it down for that. It's clean and it's advertised as a tavern. We were extra excited by what seemed to be their signature dish, steak and mashed potatoes. Well, we had an 8pm reservation, which to me is normal time, but seems to be like a last seating for this restaurant. The place was full upon entering but emptied out quickly during our meal experience. It was just our immediate family of 4. Started with cocktails and proceeded to order the seafood trio app, which was good. Wedge salad, which was also good. Had a nice waitress who had a good sense of humor. The rest went downhill. We all ordered different types of steaks and 3 of 4 medium rare, one NY Strip medium. Ordered a side of Brussel sprouts and some other accompanying sauces. All 3 steaks came out in variations of well done - gross! On an even more disappointing note, we were told there is no more mashed potatoes, which is why we chose this place, and then told only 2 baked potatoes, so we had to decide who gets it and who doesn't. A TERRIBLE thing to happen at a steak restaurant, in addition to ruining what seemed to be quality steaks. The Brussel sprouts came out overly well done drenched in their sauce. Bite into any of them and they were totally deflated and not good. We couldn't even eat it. The waitress came back and asked how things were... my wife's fillet was so over cooked the waitress even agreed and offered to remake. By this time it was almost 9:15 and she lost her appetite. The three of us just didn't mention how ours were because it would have just caused chaos that none of us wanted. We NEVER send back food, but in this case, hers was insanely overcooked. We asked to have it removed from the bill, which they did.
